TIP FROM MOM My favorite is one that I have repeated to my daughter often. You can spend a penny only once. In other words, think about what you are buying before you buy it to make sure you really want it because there is no such thing as making that same money later. You can, perhaps, make more money, but you can’t make that money again. -Pamala

MCKEAN COUNTY LIVESTOCK CLUB On April 1st the McKean County LiveStock Club met at the 4-H Center located at the McKean County Fairgrounds. There were four guests: Kelly & Mark Davis, Larry McFall, Marcia Lamar. The meeting was called to order by Ryan Davis, the secretary’s report was given by Stephanie McFall, News Report was given by John Post. They had a guest speaker, Jim Clark of the McKean County Cooperative Extension Office. Jim gave the club a talk and demonstration on dog training. For more information on dog classes, call the McKean County Cooperative Extension Office at 814-887-5613. fb NO FABRIC SOFTENER SHEETS FOR ME I really hate fabric softeners because of my allergies, not to mention the expense. Much to my chagrin, most baby clothing is very clingy if I don’t use fabric softener. My solution is to dampen a washcloth or small rag and add a tiny bit of liquid fabric softener. The smell doesn’t permeate the garments (or the house) and sweet Caroline’s clothes don’t cling. -Darla

FRESH VEGGIES IN THE WINTER When gardening in zone 3, on or about July 1st, plant carrots in a block of space. They will be full grown by the time of the first frost. Cover the patch of carrots with hay bales after the first frost. During the winter, remove the bails and dig out as many carrots as you want. The ground will be soft, and the carrots will taste fresh and then return the bales. - BP HOPE FULL GOSPEL ST. DOLLAR STRETCHERS SAVING ADVICE When I got married, my husband and I learned pretty quickly that money was the root of most disagreements. Since he liked to buy a new computer every two years and I preferred to watch savings grow, we started separate savings accounts to satisfy each of us. We each put aside 10% of our net paycheck. We combined our income first to come up with the 10%, so we wouldn’t be arguing

about who made more money. In our case, we each put aside $135 from our biweekly paychecks. Because I have mine transferred automatically and I don’t enjoy shopping, I was able to save $10,000! I bought a piano for $6,000 and continued to save. Since then, two years ago, I have again brought my balance up to $10,000! My husband likes to spend more frequently on computers, games, and such, but he has nearly $3,000. I imagine it must be time for another computer. Maybe this tip will help other families to save and avoid money arguments. As for other arguments, we decided long ago that Saturdays are his turn to be right and Sundays are mine. PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta Cat-Proofing Your House DEAR PAW'S CORNER: A friend of mine recently commented that when she brought her new cat home last year, she immediately had to put protective caps on all the electrical outlets because the cat kept trying to stick her claws into them. Do cats really do that? Mine doesn't. -- Sarah in Burlington, Vt. DEAR SARAH: It's not unheard of, as cats are curious, like to explore and often find certain things fascinating (while being totally uninterested in other things, like the expensive catnip-infused designer mouse I bought for my cat last Christmas. Not that I'm bitter about that). Because of this, and because no one is ever totally sure what a cat will take a keen interest in, cat-proofing the areas in which your cat roams is essential. Make sure it can't access the places where you store cleaning supplies or human food (some of which can be poisonous to cats). Put houseplants, particularly those from the lily family, out of reach -- or even better, out of the house -- as they can be deadly to cats when ingested. Don't let the cat access areas like the garage, workshop or the utility room. Be aware of where your cat is before you open the front door, so that it doesn't slip outside. Because cats tend to be much more low-maintenance than dogs, most pet owners don't think much about taking precautions keep their cats away from dangerous areas. Do what's necessary to keep them safe from potential hazards. Send your questions or tips to [email protected], or write to Paw's Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. What difference will you make today? When you fly these days, you get to undress with your fellow travelers to pass through Security. Recently I flew to do a Work Positive conference. The Security personnel asked me to remove my jacket, belt, and shoes, empty my pockets, put them in a crate, and pass through the metal detector. Of course I did. And then I thought about why I had to take off my shoes. I remembered the guy who tried to blow up a plane by lighting his shoes. One guy. One incident. And now we all remove our shoes and pray our feet don’t smell bad or our socks don’t have holes in them as we fly. Today you’ll encounter a situation where you ask yourself, “Will what I do make a difference in anyone’s life? Will anybody notice or care?” The answer is a resounding, “Yes, you will make a difference!” If a random traveler can change how we all travel with one act, then “Yes!” One person, namely you, can not only make a difference, you can make a significant difference. So it’s not “if” but “what” what you choose to do to make a difference. Choose wisely as you Live Positive. A public service message brought to you by

The presentation was sponsored by a Water Resources Education Network Grant that was secured by the Triple Divide Watershed Association. The students were taught about the different sources of drinking water and how they could play an active part in protecting drinking water. Clark is working with the public water supplies that are members of the Triple Divide Watershed Association to help them share what they know about drinking water with high school students. RECIPE ORGANIZATION I had a problem keeping my recipes organized. I even tried cookbook software. I finally settled on a simple three-ring binder and a packet of page protectors. I slip all of my recipes into a page protector (one recipe for the front and another for the back) and then put them in a three-ring binder. You can tape one or several index cards to a piece of paper and slip them in the page protectors. Slip magazine articles in them as well. The pages don’t tear out of the binder, and your recipes are protected from any spills or splashes while you’re in the kitchen. -Melissa *** (NAPSA)—Crohn’sAdvocate is a free, quarterly magazine for those living with Crohn’s disease, caregivers and healthcare professionals. I've noticed that some of the radiators heat only halfway: The bottom part heats, but the top part doesn't. Any reason for this? -- Jerry in Randolph, Mass. A: Radiators that don't heat up completely or that feel cooler toward the top may have air trapped in them, a problem that can be resolved pretty quickly by bleeding the air out. First turn off the thermostat (you don't want the system running while you do this) and let the system cool down for a few minutes. Then start with the radiator that's closest to the boiler. Locate the air vent near the top of the radiator. Being careful to protect your hands from the hot water, open the air vent just one turn using a screwdriver or a radiator key. You should hear air hissing out. As soon as water starts to appear at the vent, close it up. Move to the next affected radiator and repeat the process. Because so many radiators are showing trapped-air problems, you may have a bigger issue with the heating system. If the problem returns after you bleed the radiators, contact a professional to check out the entire system. Trapped air can cause corrosion inside the pipes, leading to other problems. HOME TIP: Is your older heating system's pump and motor self-lubricating? Find out -- if not, you'll need to add a little oil where the manufacturer's guide indicates. Do this twice a year, in the fall and spring. Send your questions or tips to [email protected], or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. would like to find a collector so I can sell it. -- John, Springfield, Pa. A: There are several excellent price guides that document the values of prewar and postwar Lionel, American Flyer, Buddy “L,” Marx, Ives, Kusan and AMT model trains. One of the better references is “O’Brien’s Collecting Toy Trains: Identification and Price Guide” edited by David Doyle and published by Krause. This book features more than 1,200 photos in full color and more than 6,000 listings and up-to-date prices. This should help you determine the values of your train set. The American Flyer Collectors Club also might be helpful. The address is P.O. Box 13269, Pittsburgh, PA 15243. *** Q: I have a broadsheet of “Abraham Lincoln’s Saloon License,” which has been in my family for a number of years. I am enclosing a picture of it and wonder what it might be worth. -Linda, Flagler Beach, Fla. A: Your poster was a premium, published and distributed by the Minnesota Beer Wholesalers Association, probably during the 1930s or ‘40s. Although it is interesting, it is, of course, a reprint and not an original, but nevertheless a beer collectible. I suggest you contact Ritchie Dubreuil at the Florida chapter of the Beer Collectors Club of America, 5550 Vanderipe Road, Sarasota, FL 34241. *** Q: I have a paperback booklet titled “Republican Text Book for the Campaign of 1902,” published by authority of the Republican Congressional Committee, Dunlap Printing Company, Philadelphia. Is it worth anything? -- Dolores, Platteville, Wisc. A: Your booklet is worth about $25. Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. BOOKS -- Recommended Reading "Skyjack: The Hunt for D.B. Cooper" by Geoffrey Gray Reviewed by Larry Cox The D.B. Cooper caper is one of the most baffling mysteries in American history. A man calling himself D.B. Cooper purchased a $20 one-way ticket from Portland, Ore., to Seattle in November 1971. Shortly after takeoff, he settled back in Seat 18C, lit a Raleigh cigarette and passed a note to the stewardess that he had a bomb in his briefcase. He showed the flight attendant a tangle of wires and what could have been a bomb, then demanded $200,000 and several parachutes. Later, the man leaped from the jet with more than 20 pounds of cash strapped to his body and was never seen again --- alive or dead. D.B. Cooper has become the stuff of folklore. Bars throughout the Pacific Northwest mark the anniversary with lookalike contests, and treasure hunters scour the woods in Washington in attempts to find some of the elusive cash or an important clue. Seasoned crime writer Geoffrey Gray has written a riveting account of the case. Based on extensive interviews, an examination of public records and even the confidential FBI file on Cooper, Gray details for the first time what actually happened in the air on that cold November night and the epic manhunt that followed. This is a wonderfully crafted story by a journalist who surprised himself when he discovered he had become obsessed to unmask the identity of D.B. Cooper. As he tracks down new leads and reviews previous information, several possible suspects emerge. This was a crime that occurred in another America, when not only was there smoking on domestic flights, but each seat had a little built-in ashtray, flight attendants were called stewardesses, flights were possible for just a few bucks and security was lax at best. This is an exceptional piece of true-crime reporting featuring a narrative that is as gripping as an edge-of-your-seat suspense novel. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Combining Errands to Save Gas Many people put things that are ready to go somewhere by the front door. For me, things kept by the front door are easily passed by and forgotten, and the errand doesn't get done. It also adds to the clutter in my house. So I've come up with another plan. When I have something that needs to be returned or taken somewhere, maybe library books or Goodwill donations, I put it in my car, either in the trunk or backseat. I keep a nice-looking basket in the backseat to hold such things. That way, when I'm going somewhere and pass by the library or Goodwill, I have the item ready and can take care of that errand! -Anne DUSTING LAMPSHADES I use a lint roller for dusting lampshades and removing pet hair from upholstery. However, if the area is very large, I use a “press and seal” type plastic wrap. I spread a large piece over the area, and the hair, etc. sticks to it and comes up easily. This is a much faster way to cover more territory! -DG

Don't Let Milk Go Bad Next time you have milk that is about to expire, here are two ways to make it last longer: 1. You can freeze milk. Just thaw it out in the refrigerator when you're ready to use it. 2. Pour a few grains of salt in the milk to keep it from souring too soon. -Lynn NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • To fix a hole in drywall that requires a healthy helping of joint compound, cut a piece of screen slightly bigger than the hole and tack it to the inside of the drywall. You also can wad up a piece of aluminum foil and shove it in the hole, pressing it in a bit to create a recess for the compound. The foil will keep the compound at the site of the hole, allowing it to set up instead of fall down. • “I recently did a little work on my car, and afterward I washed and waxed it. My tools got pretty grimy, so I cleaned them too. Since I had the wax out, I used it on several of them to keep them from rusting in storage.” -- A Reader, via email • Add a fabric-softener sheet to your vacuum bag when you change it. While you clean, you will distribute the good smell throughout your home. You also can use a cotton ball scented with your favorite essential oil or even perfume. • If you have trouble threading needles, try spritzing some hairspray on your finger, and twist the end of the thread. It will keep the fibers together and stiffen it enough to be easily threaded. • It's still possible to save a bit of money on car maintenance if you can’t change your own oil. Learn common add-ons that you will be offered at oil-and-lube places. Air filters are surprisingly easy to replace on your own, and so are windshield wipers. Very often, the staff of auto-supply chains will lend you tools or even assist you right in the parking lot. • Got bug bites? Try these for some relief from the itching of insect bites: apple-cider vinegar; a paste of baking soda and water, allowed to dry on the bite; a similar paste of meat tenderizer and water; or antiperspirant. Send your tips to Now Here's a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475 or e-mail JoAnn at [email protected]. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

WOODS WALK & TRAIL RUN It’s time again to get out into the surrounding countryside and sign up for the Pfeiffer Nature Center’s annual Woods Walk and Trail Run on June 2, 2012, National Trails Day. As always, the Nature Center has made improvements in response to feedback, continuing to offer a variety of activities, for people of all fitness levels. There are three different walks for those who like a slower pace, including a guided nature walk of less than a mile, a 4K (2.5 mile) walk rated at moderate difficulty, and a 10K (6.4) mile which is really challenging but very scenic. There are three timed runs also: a 5K (3.1 mile) run of moderate difficulty, a 10K (6.4) mile run rated really difficult and challenging, and a 10.5 mile timed run which is for serious runners only. The 10.5 mile run is again part of the Eastern Grip Trail Running Series, so runners can earn points at eight races throughout the season and build toward prizes at the end. “All six of our events take advantage of the differing elevations and flora and fauna to offer a unique experience in the woods and meadows of Pfeiffer Nature Center,” said Peg Cherre, Executive Director. “This is the only opportunity all year to travel through the woods between our two properties, thanks to our gracious neighbors.”

SIMPLE WAYS TO TEACH KIDS ABOUT MONEY Growing up in a time of economic struggle, today’s kids might be inadvertently learning lessons about money. If Mom and Dad have been forced to cut back or even lost their jobs, chances are kids have noticed and learned something as a result. Even if parents have managed to weather the economic storm of the last several years without making too many sacrifices, they can still start teaching kids about money, even if kids have just entered kindergarten. It’s never too early to teach kids lessons about money. The following tips are a few ways parents can do just that. * Give kids an allowance. Many parents give their kids an allowance so they can have some spending money when out with friends. But giving an allowance is also a great way to teach kids about managing their money. Start with an amount that is small but large enough for kids to make purchases. In so doing, kids will learn that things they want cost money and that properly managing their money will enable them to purchase the things they want. If kids spend all their money by Monday and don’t get their allowance until Friday, resist the temptation to give them more money if the kids ask for it. This, too, will help kids learn the value of managing money. * Open a savings account in your child’s name. Another way to teach kids about money is to open savings accounts in their names. Once the account is opened, take your child to the bank once a week to deposit a predetermined amount of money. This shows the child the importance of steadily saving money. It might be difficult at the outset to get kids into this habit, but once they make savings deposits part of their routines and their balances start to grow, they will likely grow more enthusiastic about their weekly trips to the bank. * Encourage kids to document their finances. Encouraging kids to document their finances, including deposits, withdrawals and expenditures, is an effective way to teach them basic financial analysis. If the bank supplies savings books, make sure kids use them. But go one step further and give kids a financial journal where they can document all of their purchases in addition to their deposits and withdrawals. Such documentation enables kids to analyze how they spend their money. Periodically go over these expenditures with children, and if they’re frustrated about their saving and spending habits, work with the children to develop more effective strategies. Kids may appreciate these small lessons in analysis down the road when it’s time to purchase their first vehicles or finance a larger expense, such as their educations or even their first homes. * Help kids make larger purchases. Helping kids make larger purchases, be it a new bicycle or a video game console, is another way to teach them about money. Such purchases teach kids about longterm financial goals, and how it’s necessary to stay diligent with savings in order to meet those goals. Paying for half is a good way to reward kids for meeting these longterm goals. It’s never too early to start teaching kids about money, and parents can do just that in a number of ways. *** DID YOU KNOW? If you are snacking on an apple, be sure to eat the skin. THE BEST VEHICLES TO FIT YOUR NEEDS (NAPS)-The next time you’re in the market for a new car or truck, you may wonder what’s hot and what’s not. What seals the deal for many buyers is the ability to individualize and personalize a vehicle. While the $28 billion annual automotive customization market offers thousands of products to transform any car or truck, some models offer more options for personalization than others. One way to learn which cars and trucks are the most accessory friendly is to check out the SEMA Award winners, presented annually by the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA). Whether you want to create a highperfor_mance sports car or a rugged truck worthy of offroading, these awards can help you identify which vehicles have the greatest potential for customization. “Each year, manufacturers from the specialty and perfor_mance industry come to the SEMA Show with an array of new products and new styling trends displayed on the cars and trucks they view as the most popular trend-setting models,” said Chris Kersting, SEMA’s president and CEO. “The SEMA Award taps into the exhibitors’ unique ability to identify what’s hot, just as the trends are gaining momentum.” This year’s awards were presented to the Chevrolet Camaro for the Hottest Car, the Fiat 500 for the Hottest Sport Compact, the Ford F-Series for the Hottest Truck and the Jeep Wrangler for the Hottest 4x4-SUV.

specialty-equipment manufacturers. New F-Series designs have spurred even more parts and accessories for blue-oval fans, and all indications are that the trend will continue with the latest models.

Ford F-Series

Fiat 500
Hottest Sport Compact The Fiat 500 was named the Hottest Sport Compact at the 2011 SEMA Show, making it the first vehicle to take home the honor in the newest category and beating out a dozen competitors. After arriving in U.S. showrooms earlier last year, the Fiat 500 quickly became a favorite of auto enthusiasts, specialty manufacturers and customizers nation-wide. With beautiful Italian styling, timeless functionality, fuel efficiency and innovative technology-the same attributes that made the original version an iconthe 2012 Fiat 500 is relevant for an entirely new generation of drivers. Hottest Car Named the Hottest Car for the second consecutive year, the Camaro remains one of the most accessorized vehicles on the planet, and the list of available performance parts and accessories grows daily as its popularity increases. The SEMA Award program provides valuable guidance to those looking for a top-quality vehicle that can be personalized. Before purchasing your next vehicle, visit www.sema.org to learn more about the program and see how you can customize your new ride.

Hottest 4x4-SUV The Jeep Wrangler was named the Hottest 4x4-SUV for the second consecutive year. Custom parts and accessories for the Jeep Wrangler remain in high demand as owners look for ways to make their Wranglers more their own. Enthusiasm for the Wrangler has lead to its winning of multiple industry awards, including the SEMA Most Accessory-Friendly SUV in 2007. THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta Termite Troubles Q: What do I need to look for when checking around my house for termites? -- Jason in Tampa, Fla. A: Inspecting your home for termite infestation on a regular basis can make a big difference in the amount you'd have to pay to eradicate them, should there be a problem. Most homeowners aren't able to decisively confirm that a termite infestation exists, but there are telltale signs to watch for: --Dirt tunnels on the house's masonry foundation and on pipes traveling through the foundation. --Crumbly areas inside masonry cracks or holes. --Small dirt-like formations inside cracks or holes. These could be termite nests. --In wooden areas of the house, especially those close to the ground, look for rotten or decayed spots. Use a pocketknife to poke into the spot; if it penetrates a halfinch or more, you might have a termite problem. If you notice any of these suspicious signs, contact an exterminator to do a more thorough inspection of your house and start treating for termites. Be sure to get a written estimate of the work to be done before allowing the exterminator to start treatment. How do you prevent termites? In addition to scheduling a professional inspection and preventive treatment once per year, keep moisture from affecting the house -- particularly at the foundation. Don't allow standing water near the foundation. If that's a problem after rains, improve drainage away from the area. Trim back hedges and plants to about 1 foot from the foundation so pests can't work their way into the house from them. Fill and seal cracks in outside masonry. HOME TIP: If termites are a big problem in your area, talk to a contractor about installing a sand barrier around your home's foundation, a method that will discourage the pests from getting into your house. Send your questions or tips to [email protected], or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

AUTO INSURANCE SETTLEMENTS A couple weeks ago, a kid pulled out in front of my brother who was driving my car. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but my dependable, 210,000 mile, completely paid for, great gas mileage Honda was deemed a total loss by the other insurance company’s adjuster. They originally offered me something that was much lower than any sort of replacement cost. I called the junkyard that had towed it, explained that I was out of town, and asked if she could fax his insurance company the receipts for the tires and brakes I had in the glove box. She did, and the insurance company then offered me 44% more than the original offer, all for just a little bit of extra effort. I would suggest to readers that if they are offered a settlement for an insurance claim, they should see if there are improvements or other things with receipts that they could use to increase their compensation. -David M.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver • It was American ventriloquist and comedian Willie Tyler who made the following sage observation: "The reason lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place is that the same place isn't there the second time." • Even flight attendants have their own patron saint, as declared by Pope Paul XXIII in 1962: Saint Bona of Pisa. • Many people believe that the Gutenberg Bible, which came from the presses of Johannes Gutenberg in the 1450s, is the first example of a printed book, but that's not true; it's the first book printed using movable type. The oldest known printed book is actually the "Diamond Sutra," which was printed in China more than 550 years before the Gutenberg Bible.

VINEGAR CLEANS WALLS! We bought an old house. I tried everything I could think of to clean the walls and woodwork. The cleaners just moved the dirt around on the walls. One day, I was grinding green tomatoes for mincemeat and the juice got on some woodwork. When I wiped it off, the dirt was gone. I reasoned it had to be the acid in the tomatoes and got out the vinegar. I got the same result! I now have clean walls and woodwork! -Rose ***

TIP FROM MOM I have a favorite money-saving tip. The ftip is from my mother, a divorced mom of two, who received no child support and didn’t make much money. She repeated this often when I was a child in the 60s. The less you spend on necessities, the more you can spend on luxuries. (In other words, turn off the lights!)

Visit <http:// www.stretcher.com/index.cfm?TipsSyn > to find hundreds of articles to help you stretch your day and your dollar! Copyright 2012 Dollar Stretcher, Inc. - Dollar Stretcher Tips HEALTHIER DINNERS My husband and I are trying to eat healthier and save money at the same time, which is not an easy task. So, we bought an electric wok. For the past several nights, we have chosen a type of protein (chicken, pork, or shrimp) plus a huge selection of veggies (snap peas, green peppers, green onions, broccoli, etc.) and cooked a small amount of rice to go with the dinner. We are eating better and having fun cooking the meal together. Also, our kids are actually eating tons of veggies, and we have considerably lowered our food bill. By using the meats and veggies bought on sale, and going a little lighter on the meat portions, we are saving quite a bit on our food budget. And, the cleanup is easy and fast. -Mary R. WHY I LOVE MY HAIRDRYER If you put a self-adhesive postal stamp on an envelope and then change your mind about mailing it, it is easy to remove and reuse. Simply hold a hair dryer on it until it warms up enough to peel off, and it will stick to another envelope. If you wish to reuse manila or padded envelopes that you have received in the mail, the hair dryer works very well to remove the labels without tearing the envelope itself. I also use a hair dryer to “dust” my silk or dried floral arrangements. -Sylvia S. E. in Huntsville, Alabama
