BARNEY L. CAPEHART, Ph.D., C.E.M., is a professor emeritus of industrial and systems engineering at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He has broad experience in the commercial/industrial sector having served as director of the University of Florida Industrial Assessment Center from 1990 to 1999. He personally conducted over 100 audits of industrial facilities, and has helped students conduct audits of hundreds of office buildings, small businesses, government facilities, and other commercial facilities. He is the lead author for the Guide to Energy Management textbook, the founding editor of the Encyclopedia of Energy Engineering and Technology, and the co-author or editor of five other energy books. Dr. Capehart is the creator of AEE’s Five-day Training Program for Energy Managers, and has trained over 10,000 energy managers in that program.

Those wishing to earn the CEM credential must meet specific educational and professional experience requirements, complete an AEE-approved training seminar, and in addition must pass a written examination. This fiveday training course is an excellent “refresher” program for those preparing to take the CEM exam. AEE will administer the CEM exam on the afternoon of the final day of the five-day seminar program. WARREN M. HEFFINGTON, Ph.D., P.E., C.E.M., is the founding director of the Industrial Assessment Center at Texas A&M University, which has provided over 450 industrial assessments. The U.S. DOE has contracted with this center to provide national training on the industrial assessment process. Dr. Heffington personally has directed about 200 industrial assessments and has supervised the review of over 300 energy audit reports for commercial and institutional buildings. He has been active in research on industrial demand and duty factors, and on the energy audit process. Comprehensive 5-Day CEM Training Program for Energy Managers Helps Meet ANSI/MSE 2000 Management System for Energy Standard

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has adopted the Management System for Energy (ANSI/MSE 2000) as a national standard. Developed by the Georgia Tech Enterprise Innovation Institute’s Energy and Environmental Management Center, ANSI/MSE 2000 is the first nationally recognized management system that practically addresses how industries can positively impact the country’s energy resources through their energy usage. It applies to all organizations including manufacturing, commercial, government, and institutional. Companies implementing MSE 2000 must employ professionals who are knowledgeable in energy planning, monitoring, analysis, project development, and implementation. Completion of the Comprehensive 5-Day Training Program for Energy Managers meets this requirement. MSE 2000 targets cost savings, and can substantiate an organization’s commitment to continuous improvement. Proactive energy management based on MSE 2000 principles will improve organizational energy efficiency, enhance sustainability, and help increase operational energy security by reducing energy resource consumption.
