From the Desk of Rep. Dovilla At the Statehouse Around the 7th Upcoming Events

Dear 7th District Resident: November is a month for giving thanks, both for the many blessings we have received as Americans and for those citizens among us who have served the Nation, earning the venerable title of veteran. As the fall continues, we have remained busy at the Statehouse, working on a variety of bills related to economic development, government accountability, and senior citizens – three of my primary areas of focus in the legislature. More information on these measures can be found in this month’s “At the Statehouse” segment and online at www.ohiohouse.gov/mike-dovilla under the heading “Legislation.” It has also been another active month in our southwest Cuyahoga County district, with events focused on small business, health care, manufacturing, higher education, and energy. These and other recent appointments on my official calendar are detailed below in the “Around the 7th” section of this newsletter. With the holidays fast approaching, the communities of Berea, North Royalton, Olmsted Falls, Olmsted Township, and Strongsville have full calendars of activities for families. We have provided a robust list of these opportunities in our monthly “Upcoming Events” segment. If you would like us to include information on other events of which you are aware in a future newsletter, please send those details to our office. I remain incredibly thankful for the opportunity to be of service to you in the Ohio legislature and hope you and your family have a happy Thanksgiving. As always, if I may be of assistance, please feel free to contact my office at 614-466-4895 or [email protected]. Sincerely,

State Representative Mike Dovilla At the Statehouse Our work continues this fall in Columbus. The Policy and Legislative Oversight Committee, on which I serve as chairman, has had

a full docket of bills, which have received hearings and continued to advance through the legislative process. Among other measures which have moved to the full House have been bills that improve our election administration procedures, crack down on money laundering, and protect Ohioans’ rights under the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. We have also reported favorably resolutions calling for a convention to consider proposing a federal balanced budget amendment and encouraging the administration in Washington to expand its scheduled listening sessions on coal-fired power generation to include Ohio or other states that are disproportionately reliant upon coal for affordable electricity. On my own legislative agenda, we have realized progress on House Bill 218, our legislation to establish an entrepreneur-in-residence pilot program in state agencies. The bill was reported out this week by the House Committee on Economic Development and Regulatory Reform and will now be considered by the full House. We are also continuing to advance through the committee process House Bill 259, bipartisan legislation to create an economic gardening pilot program to assist small businesses; House Bill 162, a measure to increase penalties for public corruption; and House Bill 49, legislation to strength state law regarding protective services for Ohio’s senior citizens. Around the 7th It has been another busy few weeks in our legislative district. Here are a few of the key meetings and events in which I’ve participated recently: On October 22, I attended the Baldwin Wallace University Founders’ Day luncheon, where I presented a House commendation to President Bob Helmer in recognition of the centennial of the 1913 merger of Baldwin University and German Wallace College. On October 22, I presented House commendations to Head Over Heels Gymnastics and Old Carolina Barbeque Company in Strongsville, congratulating these small businesses for their job creation efforts in our district. On October 22, I participated in a healthcare roundtable on the invitation of local physicians. We had a wide-ranging discussion, and I appreciated the opportunity to hear directly from medical professionals during this time of dramatic change. On October 23, I joined students and administrators from Polaris Career Center and representatives of the Manufacturing Advocacy & Growth Network (MAGNET) at Swagelok in Strongsville for a celebration of Ohio Manufacturing Month, which was designated by House Bill 77, bipartisan legislation I authored that was enacted earlier this year.

On October 26, I held district office hours at the Strongsville library, where I had the opportunity to visit with several constituents on a variety of issues. On October 31, I visited with pharmacists and other staff at the North Royalton Discount Drug Mart to learn more about the healthcare and economic issues that are important to the company, which has stores throughout our region. On November 7, I participated in a special presentation by the Milken Family Foundation, which presented a major award to Sarah Franko, a science teacher at North Royalton Middle School. The award recognized Ms. Franko as one of the top teachers in the Nation. I had the opportunity at the next school board meeting on November 18 to present a House commendation to Ms. Franko and to express my gratitude for her excellent work. On November 11, I spoke at a Veterans Day ceremony at the Academy of St. Adalbert in Berea. It was great to have so many fellow veterans come out to share their stories with the children. I am grateful to the teachers and staff for their kind invitation to return to the school. On November 18, I met with representatives of the National Tooling and Machining Association at Exact Tool and Die in Brook Park. We had a good discussion on the importance of manufacturing, STEM education, and workforce development. On November 20, I met with Rev. Robert Niehoff, President of John Carroll University, for a conversation on higher education and related public policy issues.
