WOULD YOUR CHAPTERBE MISSED?
With you through LIFE®

Where were you?
“Where were you when the World stopped Turning” Alan Jackson I was sitting in a computer lab at Iowa State working on a paper, waiting for class to start. I received a text from my friend. He told me to turn on the TV in the lab. I said, ‘What channel?” he said, “...it doesn't matter. The World Trade Centers have been hit by a plane.” We turned the TV on just in time to see the second plane crash into tower #2.. At that instance, I was speechless and shocked. I had to go to class so I walked the short distance over to the other building to class. The Professor told us class was canceled and to go call our families! Every emotion went through my body in about a second. Every time I attend an In Honor and Remembrance Ceremony, all those emotions come back. You are part of an organization that will never let the victims and their families be forgotten. Every generation has an event that they will remember forever, such as Lincoln’s assassination, D-Day, the Kennedy assassination, Watergate, Vietnam and 9/11/01. There have been moments that change a life and moments that change a lifetime. I asked you: “Where were you on that day in 2001?” Now I ask you, “Where are you going to be on 9/11/12, eleven years later?” Virginia Chapters have plenty of events you can attend even if your chapter is not carrying out an In Honor and Remembrance Project. Go out and honor your local heroes and the 2,977 individuals and their families by attending a remembrance event. “...Faith, hope and love are some good things he gave us and the greatest is love...” Alan Jackson

From the desk of …
We had a very successful Youth and Sr. Camp (we would have loved more campers in both) and I am now back to helping and visiting chapters. We are getting into a very busy season for Woodmen chapters and in our own personal lives as the holidays are approaching. I want to continue to thank the chapter members and field force for all the amazing accomplishments that took place over the last few months.

vegetable oil and when I arrived at the local Kroger’s, I got very excited! As I walked up to the door, I noticed that they had started to put out the fall displays, including PUMPKINS. When I got home, I told Kelly all about it and then went downstairs to pull out my pumpkin carving tool box. I might even carve one this weekend for 9/11. It is hard to believe that my little man is 10 months on the 7th. He is now mobile. Put up the gates!

As I think about the holiday season, I can’t help but think of all the communities and families our Woodmen chapters are going to help with monetary donations, gifts, volunteer hours, love and support. Please know that Woodmen has always been there to be our brothers’ keeper, and this season there are many that will need our help. I was sent out to the store the other day for some

Attached to the Community Connection, you will find a registration packet for the Virginia Fraternal Alliance and Virginia Fraternal Insurance Counselors Annul Golf Tournament and Convention. This year’s convention will be held in Roanoke, VA at the Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center. The Golf Tournament will be held on October 18th, and the convention on October 19th. I encourage every Chapter to send at least one delegate to this convention. The Board of Directors have been working very hard to make this an event that you will not want to miss. The registration cost for the convention (not to include golf or overnight rooms) is ONLY $40. That includes all the sessions, luncheon banquet and keynote speaker. Please see registration packets attached to the Community Connection email.
It is important that at least once a year we update our email communication list. So on page 10 please fill out the Chapter communication UPDATE and return to the State office via email to [email protected], [email protected] or the mailing address listed on the Communication Update Sheet.

On page 7 of the connection you will see the description of the new Chapter Auditor position and it’s responsibilities. The Chapter Auditor will be replacing the Chapter Trustee position. Only one Chapter Auditor will be required for the slate of officers. The creation of the new position will free up two chapter members to fill other important roles in your local Chapter’s slate of officers. Please see page 6 for the defined Auditor duties and start thinking of who in your local chapter will fit this role the best. As always, if you have any question please do not hesitate to call Sheri or me for help.

We need your help. As of 9/4/13 at 3:50 PM, the State of Virginia has 100 events still to be reported. 77 of these events are past due. Reporting your events within 30 days is required by the Woodmen of the World. This will also help you with your 5 star fraternal challenge points and extra matching funds. Every chapter has a person that is assigned to complete the reporting. Please encourage your chapter reporter to go onto My Fraternal Web and get these completed. If you need some assistance you can always ask your field representative, Sheri Anderson or myself to help you catch up your reporting. Also keep in mind that you will receive an additional 10 points ($10 of additional matching funds) if you have your reporting up to date at the end of each quarter. To complete your Chapter reporting go to www.myfraternalweb.org November *Calendar Deadline
