Table of contents Abstract Purpose Limitations/implications Practical implications Introduction Objective Research methodology Data analysis & findings Conclusion Suggestions Bibliography

Abstract This survey was conducted on 100 Auto rickshaw drivers where we found what is their average monthly income, from which state they belon g, about their alternate income, about their family, their daily routine problems , do they have any savings and what type of savings do they prefer, their expectations from the Auto Unions and the government.

Purpose The main purpose to conduct this study was to understand the economic status and the personal life of auto rickshaw drivers. To know about their daily routine problems. To know about their average monthly income and how they survive by the income they earn. One of th e main purposes of this study was to understand the role of the auto driver union and what do auto drivers expect from the government or the union for their welfare in the society.

Limitations of the study
There are plenty of auto rickshaw drivers, so it is not easy to catch everyone and ask about questions related to survey. It is difficult to communicate with auto rickshaw drivers as they are always in hurry and they are not much interested to talk about themselves.Because of recent political events they are afraid to reveal much about themselves. It is not necessary that they will always speak the truth about themselves and their income. There are rarely updates about auto rickshaw on internet. There are hardly information available in literatures about auto rickshaw drivers.

Practical Implications After doing this survey we came across many facts which could be used by different NGO¶s, Auto unions or Government for the welfare of the auto drivers. As far as the impact on students is concerned, analysis of this survey will also help them in understanding the socio economic structure and the personal life of the auto rickshaw drivers in detail.

Introduction The very first thing that pops up in our mind when we hear the name Auto-rickshaw is that a black & yellow colour three wheeler vehicle containin g a smirk looking guy wearing a khaki dress, popularly called as µRickshawa lla¶.

Basically Rickshaw is nothing but a means of transport, preferably used in urban areas. In a city like Mumbai where common man lives a hectic life auto rickshaw plays an important role. Majority of Mumbaikars are working class people, hence they use rickshaw, as it is the cheapest mean of public transport.

Rickshaw plays a vital role in social, economic and political aspects of Mumbai. There are three unions which helps and protects the rights of rickshawalas viz. BJP, Shivsena, and CPI. Though being such a petty profession it has a vital impact on the economic structure of the society. It generates a massive source of employment.

Many major nationalized banks in India of fer loans to self-employed individuals seeking to buy auto rickshaws. Auto rickshaw manufacturers in India include Bajaj Auto, Kerala Auto Limited, Piaggio and Force Motors (previously Bajaj Tempo), Mahindra & Mahindra and TVS Motors. Auto rickshaws are found in cities, villages and in the countryside.

There are total 246,458 auto rickshaws in Mumbai MMR as of 2008,Auto Rickshaws are three-wheeler scooters, which can accommodate three people. Apart from Buses, Trains and Taxis, Auto rickshaws play an important role of public transport in Mumbai. As per the new ruling of the Bombay High Court, all auto rickshaws use CNG as the fuel.

Auto rickshaws are not permitted to enter Mumbai city. The southmost points accessible to them are Bandra Fire Station in Weste rn Mumbai and Sion Bus Depot in Central Mumbai.

Auto rickshaws registered in Mumbai are not allowed travel beyond the municipal limits of Mumbai. They have been allowed to ply between Sion to Mulund in the Central Suburbs and up to Mankhurd on the Harbour line. People who wish to travel beyond Mumbai to suburbs like Vashi, Airoli have to catch another rickshaw. In the western suburbs they are allowed to ply between Bandra and Bhayandar only.

Recently the police revealed that the law require s the driver of an unengaged taxi to take you to wherever you want to go, regardless of distance or time. If the driver does not comply, one simply needs to call the police (dial 100) and mention the cab's license number and the driver's name. The act of c alling the police on your cell phone usually makes the driver comply with your request to be taken to your destination.

A mechanical meter decides the fare and is proportional to distance travelled.

uggestions Based on discussions with drivers , some recommendations of potential reforms that could be targeted in the sector to improve the socio-economic condition of drivers as well as quality of service include the following:

Raise the Minimum Fare Rate: This might help auto rickshaw drivers make ends meet, and they would have less of an incentive to fabricate fares. However, this is a short-term solution, as auto rickshaw drivers are already spending too much time looking for customers. Improve Benefits to Auto Rickshaw Drivers: The government could consider offering benefits to registered drivers, such as health and vehicle insurance. This would help improve auto rickshaw driver¶s day-to-day experience, reduce costs and also create incentives for vehicle registration and the use of valid permit s. Establish an Auto Rickshaw Driver Academy: This initiative would start as a pilot program to educate auto rickshaw drivers in a certain area, not just on safety issues, but also on customer service. It would be voluntary to attend, but drivers who participated in this program could receive uniforms, a badge, or some other item to wear or attach to their auto. This signal could potentially help them attract new customers. Drivers who took the course could also receive other incentives, such as insurance, coupons for fuel, a free tune-up, etc. A similar initiative has been implemented in New Delhi by the Autorickshaw Star Club. Develop Direct Purchasing Opportunities with Manufacturers: Approach and encourage manufacturers to sell directly to rickshaw dri vers. Manufacturers could provide financing through a micro -payment system administered through existing financing arms. (In fact, Mahindra & Mahindra already has a similar scheme in place for some of its agriculture machinery.) This new relationship could force out the financier middleman and provide better financing terms for drivers.
Conclusion In our survey of 100 people we come to a conclusion that 54% of people owning auto rickshaw and 46% of people works on shifts. The income earned by them is around 3000 -4000 where 31% of people earned above 5000Rs. Due to low income earned by them they do not meet their basic requirement, medical facilities and additional demand. Their savings are low due to the low income earned by them and they preferred to deposit their money in Banks and Post offices there is no further investment made by them. Their expectation from the Govt. is to provide Loan facility with low interest rates. RTO benefits, reduction in Permit charges and availability of easy finance .
