A Journey By boat
Life always demands for more and to meet life’s needs people move to different places. It is then when people realize the importance of transport. There has been a time in my life when I faced a situation of life and death depending on a “successful” boat ride. My sister gave birth to her first baby in a journey by boat – a journey that kept her life on the line. I heard a sudden shriek and jumping off from my bed I rushed to Bella’s room. I found her howling with pain. Before I could realize what was wrong, Mom shouted, “Call the doctor! Call the doctor! It’s the baby.” Father rushed to call the doctor who lived next to us. I waited impatiently outside as the doctor went in to see her. The doctor informed she had to be taken to the hospital. I carried her seemingly weightless body to the boat that had been there since the first of this month, expecting this day. The boat left for town as soon as we boarded it. As we traveled, all I could hear was her yells and see my mother panic with terror at her shrieks and cries. Father was reciting all the ‘suras’ he could come up with and I was praying that we made it on time as we both sat outside the shade of the small boat. The lady doctor at times was begging the driver to hurry. The driver kept on rowing amidst all the chaos. “I think she’s getting tired. It’ll be too late if we wait till we get to the hospital,” Doctor exclaimed. She asked for some hot water and the driver’s son brought it to her immediately. I could not hear Bella anymore. She was too exhausted even to say a word. I could hear mother sob. She was following everything the doctor ordered her to. Father still continued to pray and I longed to see my sister’s lovely smile again! After a long silence I heard what sounded like a baby crying. A few minutes later Mother came out of the shade with a little doll in her arms and a broad grin on her face. Father took her grand-daughter from her and I saw his eyes glisten with tear in the dim light of the lamp. Bella was alright and so was her little doll. Now her mother’s task was taken over by the baby. She cried and yelled letting everyone know she was as fit as a fiddle. The boat floated in the middle of the river with a family crying with joy and some outsiders participating in their glory!
