A Timeline of Game Consoles
Now a multi-million pound industry, the business of game and console production is relatively new. One of the fastest exploding market places, its highly competitive and requires great skill in finding a niche to exploit.

This PowerPoint presentation serves to outline the past products, and the evolution of ‘entertainment’ consoles, machines and devices.

Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Device
January 25th 1947 saw the invention of the first electronic hardware, designed to amuse and allow interaction from humans. This could loosely be said to be the first ever games console. All that could be done is the movement of the little ‘Light’ dot over the barrier in a tennis style game. Undoubtedly this paved the way for more imaginative and engaging pieces of technology.

Magnavox Odyssey
• The next big development came on May 24, 1972 with the introduction of the Magnavox Odyssey. Simply a large box attaching to your new television. This is a noticeable improvement from the Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Device, as it could be interacted with by two people, and came with a variety of game choices. Most famously, Pong.

Color TV Game Series
• These machines introduced some conventions still employed in today's consoles. The controllers were now on cables, allowing for a more comfortable style of play. Also, the world begins to see companies specialising in game console manufacture, a major player being the Japanese based ‘Nintendo’. Now however, the conglomerate companies. Like ‘Sony’, dominate the market.

Nintendo Entertainment System
• Nintendo are still a major presence in the game industry in the early 1980’s releasing the NES on July 15th 1983. This is part of the 3rd generation of game consoles, known as the 8bit era. As the technology advances, the games complexity develop. Companies start releasing game franchises such as ‘Super Mario Brothers’

Sega Mega Drive and Mega CD
• Previous to this new console, (From a new company Sega). The actual games have been distributed on cartridges, (Actual pieces of hardware slotted into the machines) Whilst initially it used cartridges, an ‘add-on’ was released for the use of CD’s on the console.

Fifth Generation Rivalry
• 1994 saw the release of Sony’s Play Station. This prompted a rapid response from the current giant Nintendo, who produced the Nintendo 64, in 1996. (personally, the best console ever made, would rather keep my N64 than swap it for a PS3) Here a competitive market forces companies to be more inventive, offer a wider variety of games, and price units comparably.

Seventh Generation
• The sixth generation didn’t see much development in games or consoles, however the seventh generation, consists of only 3 consoles, The PS3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. • Sony and Nintendo still producing the latest consoles, however Microsoft are the new manufactures, moving into consoles from software manufacture.

Everything The New Generation Do
• More than a games console, these new machines incorporate many aspects of media within one unit.
