The History of the Moldova State University . The Moldova State University was founded on October 1, 1946 as the State University of Chisinau. Its creation was a milestone for the development, strengthening and consolidation of the higher education of the country. The MSU is a classic type of institution and its noble mission is to offer qualitative education and training of highly skilled specialists. 5 faculties were opened initially at the State University of Chisinau (Physics and Mathematics, Geology and Soil Science, Biology, Chemistry, History and Philology). During the first year 320 people were enrolled in 12 departments; the educational process was guided by the academic staff of 35. In 1958, department of part-time and correspondence education was opened at the State University of Chisinau; and, this form of education is still used at some faculties. In order to facilitate the training of young professionals the evening section had been providing training for many years (1958-1981). During 1946-1988, the institution, as a part of the Soviet system of education was under the management of Moscow. Beginning from 1969, the State University of Chisinau is a member of the International Association of Universities. The MSU soon became a recognized leader of the national system of higher education in the country. It has always been responsive to the society demands; thus, the new departments and faculties were created: the Faculty of Economics (1953-1991, 2002), the Faculty of Law (1959), the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (1959), the Faculty of Foreign Languages (1964), the Faculty for Training Foreign Students (1967), the Faculty of Journalism (1980), the Faculty of Philosophy and Psychology (1994), the Faculty of Political Science (1995), Computer Centre (1973), Central University Library (1994). On the basis of some engineering and economics specialties of the Moldova State University, new higher educational institutions were established such as Technical University of Moldova (1964), the Academy of Economic Studies (1991) and the Academy of Theology (1993). With the breakup of the Soviet Union significant changes were introduced in the system of higher education. During 1988-1996 the State University is characterized by improvement of traditional forms of scientific-methodological work and implementation of new technologies. Curricular and organizational forms previously used were modified. On January 19, 1990, the institution was renamed into the Moldova State University. The contract system has been applied since 1994 in the University.

The Moldova State University in present
The Moldova State University is the first higher education institution accredited by the Government of the Republic of Moldova, certificate no. 001, signed on February 22, 2001, with subsequent re-accreditation on September 28, 2006. In May, 2005 Moldova State University adhered to the Bologna Process and Lisbon Convention. It has facilitated the mobility of students, graduates and academic staff, has prepared students for their future carriers and the life of active citizens in a democratic society, has supported their personal development, has offered wide access to the higher education of the superior quality, based on democratic principles and academic freedom. Thereby, the MSU became the first student-centered institution in the country. Since July 20, 2006, the Moldova State University has become a profile member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. Today, the University has over 100 000 graduates of various faculties and specialties. During all these years the MSU has prepared the biggest part of the intellectual elite of the Republic of Moldova. At present, the Moldova State University is one of the most important higher education institutions in the country. It has around 17 000 students who study at over 100 specialties and specializations at 14 faculties:

and corresponding members, 90 professors / doctors habilitatus, 364 associate professors /doctors of science. Currently, MSU has highly qualified technical staff and a well-equipped material base, which provides a friendly atmosphere and qualitative studies.

Nowadays MSU has a well-equipped technical and material base, which supplies all areas of university activity, including 11 buildings for studies, 16 dormitories, 6 research centres with 26 laboratories, MSU Library, Centre for Information Technology, Publishing Centre, 12 culture and language centers, Cultural Center, Sports Center, four gyms, 3 student cafeterias, 6 practice training stations, and 3 holiday camps. The Moldova State University is known worldwide in the area of higher education and is integrated into a strengthened international cooperation network, having concluded about 110 bilateral cooperation agreements with institutions of higher education from 28 countries. At the present time the Moldova State University is a member of the International Association of Universities (IAU), Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), and the Eurasian Association of Universities (AEU). MSU is highly reform-oriented and dedicated to the Bologna-Process, concerning Bachelor- and Master Degrees as well as the ECTS system. The university is involved in different education and research projects within TEMPUS and other international programmes, so the project counts on a well-experienced partner. Besides the Rector, the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Sciences and the Faculty of Social Work, Sociology and Philosophy are highly motivated to be active partners in the project and to contribute their competence and manpower

The mission
As many other universities from our country, Moldova State University has his its mission and objectives. It is responsible preparing specialist according to the new society’s standards. For instance the noble mission is:   training of highly qualified professionals for the national economy, able to work effectively in changing conditions of life and market economy; organization and development of basic and applied scientific research aimed at solving current socio-economic problems and implementing of the technology transfer of the university research results . The main objectives of the university are: 


Academic training in various fields, development of necessary skills for socioprofessional integration.. Promotion of human and national axiological values/principles; educating ethic and civil profile of studious youth.

Quality assurance in higher education and in provided educational services.. Participation in elaboration of educational strategies and policies and their implementation in higher education.



Integration into European higher education and research.

The Senate
The Senate is the supreme governing body of the university administration, which is elected for five years. Senate members are chosen as a representative share of every faculty, subdivision, taking into account the following ratio: academic-scientific staff – 75%; students, doctoral students – 15%, support staff – 10%. Rector, vice-rectors, deans, head of Syndicate Committee, director of the Library, director of Information Technology Center, heads of allied institutions are the members of the Senate in virtue of their functions. The number of the Senate members shall not exceed 101 people. The Senate is entitled to consider any issue related to educational and research processes, as well as managerial, socio-economic, financial activities of the MSU.

The faculties
Faculties are basic functional units of the Moldova State Univerisity and comprise one or more fields of professional development.

The Faculty of Biology and Soil Science DEAN: Assoc. Prof., Dr. Mihai LEŞANU The Faculty of Biology and Soil Science was founded in 1946, at the same time as the Moldova State University. Its foundation is connected to the names of the famous scientists – academician N. Dimo and professors V. Andreev and I. Vul. This faculty trains professionals in natural sciences, who will efficiently contribute to solving problems of utmost importance in this branch. The training process is fulfilled according to international standards. One of the priorities of the Faculty of Biology and Soil Science is student involvement in research. A real treasure of the faculty is the Museum of Natural Sciences that consists of Geology, Soil Science, Botany and Zoology divisions with the impressive number of samples from all over the world. The mission of the Faculty of Biology and Soil Science consists of training highly qualified specialists for pre-university and university education, research, science, culture, social-economic activities, as well as continuing education coordination of the graduates and specialists in the domain, development of the prestigious scientific-didactic school.

The Faculty of Law DEAN: Dr. Hab. Gheorghe AVORNIC Law comprises a system of legal rules that settle the legal framework of the society, and these principles underlie the curricula of the Faculty of Law. The Faculty of Law was founded in 1959. It is one of the largest faculties of the Moldova State University. The teaching-learning activity is focused on building skills to understand and interpret correctly a normative act on the basis of internal and international jurisprudence. Thus, the main objectives are achieved through formation of professional competences based on theoretical and practical training in law, developing research skills in the field of jurisprudence, training specialists to investigate controversial issues, developing methodological background, assuring conditions of multilateral development of future specialists, training a civic position and ethical dimensions of the personality. Furthermore, students who have a high level of French and English can study jurisprudence at Francophone and Anglophone branches.

The Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology DEAN: Assoc. Prof., Dr Viorica GLADCHI The Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology is a unique institution in the country that prepares students to become chemists. The training process stipulates the study of composition, structure and compound properties, elaboration of special methods for obtaining new substances with directed properties, advanced technologies for production of final materials with advanced competitiveness and reduction of negative impact on the environment. To provide an excellent training from both practical and theoretical points of view most of the disciplines comprise all forms of instruction: courses, seminars, laboratory woks/workshops, writing theses and annual project. That allows the graduates to accumulate thorough experimental skills required for successful functioning at any scientific laboratory or industry. The faculty has necessary resources to achieve the major objective – training of young chemists. Therefore, by virtue of its didactic, scientific and methodical activities the faculty provides an efficient continuity of education – secondary, university and post-university professional education: Chemistry, Chemical Technology and Environment Protection. Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature DEAN: Dr. Hab. Ludmila ZBANT The Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature was founded in 1964, it trains high qualified specialists who will be able to activate in such spheres as: education, science, culture and other domains of national economy. Nowadays, the faculty includes about 1300 students,

140 specialists including 6 doctors habilitatus and 40 doctors of science(associate professors).The faculty cooperates with many embassies and international institutions: Alience Francaise de la Moldavie, Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie, Peace Corps, Latin Union, Soros Fondation, Goethe Institute, Servantes Institute etc. The mission of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature consists of training highly qualified specialists in modern languages, professors, translators, interpreters and researchers. Faculty of Economic Sciences DEAN: Dr. Hab., Assoc. Prof. Galina ULIAN The Faculty of Economic Sciences is one of the most prestigious higher education institution from the Republic of Moldova. It is one of the youngest faculty of the Moldova State University, it is modern and up-to-date. The study program consists of 3 levels: bachelor studies, master’s degree and doctoral studies in finance, business, marketing and logistics, that are necessary for the national economy. The mission of the Faculty of Economic Sciences consist of training highly qualified specialists in economics, strengthening of the academic and scientific prestige. The personalities There a many personalities that graduated the Moldova State University:          Marian Lupu – speaker of the Parliament, Faculty of Economic Sciences Mihai Ghimpu – politician, Law Faculty Vlad Plahotniuc – business man and politician, Law Faculty Gheorghe Duca - President of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, The Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology Petru Lucinschi – ex-president of the Republic of Moldova, Faculty of History and Philosophy Zinaida Greceanii – politician, Faculty of Economic Sciences Mark Tcaciuk – politician, Faculty of History and Philosophy Dumitru Diacov – politician, Faculty of Journalism Oleg Efrim – minister of Justice, Law Faculty.

Moldova State University remains one of the most prestigious universities from our country. It continues to provide high education and it keeps to train the best specialists.
