First major snowstorm of 2012 sends cars spinning
By Judy Benson Day Staff Writer The first major storm of the year brought up to 8 inches of snow to New London County Saturday and a reminder of how treacherous winter driving can be. Snow totals ranged from a high of 8 inches in Ledyard to 6½ inches in Groton, according to David Stark, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Upton, N.Y. Police and emergency crews throughout the region responded to numerous traffic accidents throughout the day and evening, including rollovers and car-versus-tree collisions, but no major injuries were reported. Saturday night, police in Groton and Ledyard responded to separate single-car rollovers, likely due to the slippery conditions. The Groton crash was on Long Hill Road, and the Ledyard crash, off Mathewson Mill Road. Earlier Saturday, just before noon, Bank Street in New London at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Colman Street was closed following a series of accidents there. It was reopened after city public works crews replowed and sanded the area. Other accidents included cars hitting utility poles on Redden Avenue in New London, Town Hill Road in Norwich and Town Farm Road in Ledyard. On Society Road in East Lyme, a car struck a tree. On Route 12 in Gales Ferry near the Preston town line, emergency crews responded to a two-car accident involving a state Department of Transportation vehicle. Minor injuries were reported. One lane of Route 12 was closed while the accident was cleared. Just past noontime Saturday, a flight headed to Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington returned to Bradley International Airport for an emergency landing. The flight, an ExpressJet operated by Delta Connection, returned to the Windsor Locks airport shortly after it departed at 12:12 p.m. when the plane's left-wing caution message activated. The jet landed safely and the 14 passengers on board were booked on later flights, officials said. On state roadways, the DOT reported three accidents. A tractor-trailer truck jackknifed on Interstate 95 southbound between exits 44 and 43 in West Haven at around 10 a.m., closing the right lane. The DOT said it expected the roadway would be closed for about an hour. The DOT also reported a three-vehicle accident on Interstate 91 north in Hartford that closed the left lane at around 9:45 a.m., and a tanker-truck accident in Wethersfield on I-91 southbound that closed the left lane just before 9 a.m. The snowstorm put the region in line with its normal average January accumulation of 6 inches, Stark of the National Weather Service said. "But we're still running behind" the average total for the months of December, January and February of 18.6 inches, he said. While snowfall had been scarce this winter until Saturday, the state did see an unusual October snowstorm this year that left 1½ inches in Groton and much higher accumulations in other parts of the state. Stark said today is expected to be sunny, and there is a slight chance of sleet or light freezing rain overnight that is forecast to turn to rain by Monday morning as warmer air moves into the area. Day Staff Writer JC Reindl contributed to this report.
