Leap into the future with the Friends of the Library

Quote of the Month
The best of a book is not the thought which it contains, but the thought which it suggests; just as the charm of music dwells not in the tones but in the echoes of our hearts. --Oliver Wendell Holmes

FROM THE DIRECTOR
On Monday, January 30, the Friends of the Library held their annual Membership Luncheon in the Alice Doughtie Wing of the Library. President Elizabeth Babine welcomed members and guests and reviewed Friends’ accomplishments this past year. Musical entertainment was provided by Josh Williams and the Carroll High School Jazz Band. As usual we enjoyed delicious food, good company, and excellent entertainment. Thanks to everyone who got off to a great start by mailing in your membership dues. If you haven’t, you may still mail them to the Library. Our income tax forms are in! We have both federal and state forms and we can make copies of various supplemental forms you may need. Our supply is limited so we ask that you take only what you need. The Internal Revenue Service is encouraging everyone to think about filing via the Internet. You can visit the IRS website at www.irs.gov to get help finding an online service to file your taxes. In many cases filing is free but it often depends upon your income. Next time you visit the Library be sure to notice our lovely landscaping. The Claybank Master Gardeners is responsible for maintaining our gardens and they do an outstanding job of keeping things looking great. They also maintain a bulletin board just inside our foyer to list special programs and events. If you’re interested in becoming a Master Gardener, contact Carol Ball at 774-5353.

FROM THE CREEL RICHARDSON ROOM By Jocelyn Rayford
Georgia was a major starting and stop-over place for persons who settled in Alabama, especially the Wiregrass area. Since cemeteries are a rich source of genealogical data, this room has an assortment of survey books of Georgia cemeteries. They include: Graves of Montgomery, Treutlen and Wheeler Counties, compiled by Moses M. Coleman, Jr. & Lavon Stone Palmer, and Cemeteries of Telfair County Georgia, Cemeteries of Tattnall County Georgia, and Cemeteries of Candler & Evans Counties Georgia, each compiled by Moses M. Coleman, Jr. and Emilie K. Hartz. Additionally, we have Cemeteries of Emanuel County Georgia and Cemeteries of Toombs County Georgia, compiled by Moses M. Coleman, Jr. Leroy Lewis and the Jefferson County Historical Society compiled the book, Cemeteries of Jefferson County Georgia 1794-2000. For those who might have had relatives who served in the American Revolution, the book Georgia Citizens and Soldiers of the American Revolution, by Robert S. Davis, Jr. provides a great deal of information about those Georgians. Gone to Georgia, Jackson and Gwinnett Counties and their Neighbors in the Western Migration, compiled by William C. Stewart, tells of those who followed the Great Road from Virginia to North Carolina, South Carolina, then on to Georgia. The Second or 1807 Land Lottery of Georgia, compiled by Rev. Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr. lists the names of those settlers who received land lots ceded by the Creek Nation of Indians to the United States. This area, between the Oconee and Ocmulgee Rivers, is an area which later became an important part of the state of Georgia.
