FROM THE DIRECTOR
The Friends of the Library hosted a special Member Appreciation Day on May 16th. Since it was catered, Friends were able to relax and just enjoy the event. Thanks are extended to Elizabeth Babine, Mary Vaeth, Sara Carroll, and Lou Harry for planning and setting up and to Dale Moates for providing musical entertainment. On June 1st beginning at 10:00 the Friends will host a Mini Book Sale. It will continue until 1:00 and will be “Buy One, Get One Free.” They have many books that are priced just right for you. All proceeds go to the Library. At the same time we will introduce two local authors. Kimi Bivins, author of Overcoming a Broken Heart, and Chantel Bennett, author of Pillow Talk, will be here to sign their books. On Wednesday, June 5th at 2:00 we will kick off our Summer Reading Program (SRP) with “Dig Into Reading.” Each child will be given a free T-shirt with logo made possible by donations from Wiregrass United Way, Chuck Auman, People’s Bank, and Commercial Bank. Be sure to bring your children, grandchildren, or even great-grandchildren for a great time. Judge Val McGee continues to host his Writers’ Forum the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 2:30. If you’re interested in writing and learning some of the basics, join us. We already have two published authors in the group and would love to have even more. June 1st marks the beginning of the 2013 Hurricane Season. Make sure you are prepared and are ready. Even though we are some distance from the coast, we do experience some of the effects such as tornadoes, wind, and heavy rain. Just as a reminder, E-Books are now available. You can log on by going to http://camellia.lib.overdrive.com to browse, check out, and download. Have your library card available and enter all 13 digits. Thanks to everyone for the good turnout we had for the membership appreciation mixer that was held on May 16th. Thanks also goes out to the Program committee for the hard work to pull it together. Thanks also to J&W Enterprises for the good food and to Dale Moates for the great entertainment There is a mini book sale scheduled for June 1, 2013 from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm. Some figures from the last sales are as follows: plant sales, $710.00; bake sales $416.50; and book sales $736.50 --a grand total of

$1,863.00. Help us make the June book sale a record breaker. Help get the word out, show up, and bring a friend or a neighbor along. Look to the monthly Library calendar for upcoming special events that will benefit you and the community. Again, the Friends of the Library meets the second Wednesday of each month at 10:30 am. If you can take time out of your busy schedule, come join us and bring a friend. THE FOL DEPENDS ON OUR MEMBERS’ SUPPORT TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE LIBRARY. Sincerely. Mo Armstrong, President

Veteran’s Memorial Bridge of Ariton, Alabama by Jocelyn Rayford It is said that the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge, built over the Pea River in 1920-1921, was the first concrete reinforced bridge built in Alabama. It cost $92,109.97. In his book Claybank Memories, Val McGee states that on August 3, 1921, the “Pea River Bridge…was dedicated in a huge ceremony to the 57 men from Dale County who lost their lives in WWI. There were speeches by Mrs. Thomas Owens, Director of Alabama Archives and History and by the State Highway Engineer…” The following were engineers who worked on the bridge during the year of 1920-21: Mitcham, Keller, Smith and Land. Dale County officials who took part in supporting its construction were: Windham, Sessions, Roberts, Ziglar, Mullins and Archer. During the year 1970, this bridge was chosen to be one of two highway bridges opened for Highway 231. In 1977, the Dale County Historical Society was able to get the Alabama Register of Landmarks to accept this bridge as part of Alabama Heritage. So, in 1979, they joined with the Historic Chattahoochee Commission to erect a marker that indicated the importance of this bridge to the state of Alabama and to the Chattahoochee area. They placed their historic marker on the north side of the bridge. Unfortunately by February 2011 this marker became unreadable due to time and exposure. So on this date, the members of the Brundidge VFW Post 7055 held a rededication ceremony to replace the marker with a new one. They did this to express their pride that the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge near Ariton, is built on the midpoint between Brundidge and Ozark, thus, it is a vital part of the Brundidge community and heritage, as well.
