Press Release – February 20, 2014
Albany County Sheriff enrolling hundreds of inmates into the Health Plan Marketplace In 2013 65 Albany County inmates were admitted to local hospitals. Of the 65 inmates, 56 were not sentenced making them eligible to be covered under the Affordable Health Care Act (AHCA). Once a person is enrolled, and if admitted to a hospital all costs are passed onto the federal government. The Albany County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the Capital District Black Chamber of Commerce and the University at Albany School of Social Welfare are working in earnest to enroll qualified individuals at the Correctional Facility in the New York State Department of Health, Health Plan Marketplace. Enrolling individuals into a health plan under the ACA has two purposes; The possible savings of several hundreds of thousands of dollars for Albany County taxpayers and ensuring these individuals have health care coverage once they reenter society. As of today over 50 inmates have been registered and roughly 400 more are eligible. By working with our two partners who are providing the Navigators the enrollment should be completed by the middle of March, at which point it will just be the new arrivals being added as needed. Corey Ellis, Vice President of the Capital District Black Chamber of Commerce thanks Sheriff Apple for taking the lead role in this project as health care for all in our community is a major concern for the Chamber. Mr. Ellis’s contact number is 339-1568.
