Ten years ago, my wife Karrie and I began our quest to open up the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. Armed with the lessons we leamed from our first {ailed theater venture in Bakersfield, Califomia, we came to Austin with a projector,
200 seats, a paltry stash of money borrowed {rom a refinancing o{ Karrie's parents home, and what appeared to many of our family and friends to be a supremely risky plan. For 6 months, we worked non-stop and with some help from friends,

personally buiit from scratch every detail of what is now known as the original Aiamo Drafthouse Cinema at 409 Colorado.

Ten years later, we sland before a new challenge. We ate in the final year oI a ten year lease, and must decide on whether or not there is a future for

the original Alamo. In order to renew the lease, we must {ace economic reality. To conform to downtown market rates, our rent will double;

with sinilar challenges, many downtown businesses (Gilligan! Waterloo Brewing Company, Miguel's La Bodega to name a few) have decided to call it quits. We, however, despite overwheiming odds, have decided to draw a iine in the sand and continue the fight. With your he1p, we will not be closing our doors.

As of June 1, 2006, we have formed a new non-profit corporation, Heroes of the Alarno Foundation, for the puiposes of supporting cutting-edge film in downtown Austin and acquiring and continuing the operations of the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown. We provide arts
and cultural entertainment to the city of Austin that is not being provided by anyone else. I{ you appreciate the programming that the original downtown Alamo Drafthouse Cinema provides, we ask that you become an official patron of the theaier. We have a range of mernber and donor packages both for individuals and corporations. Your contribution will help the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Downtown continue to exist and provide the vast array of programming responsibie for
Entertainment Weekly naming us "The best theater in America doing it right."
To me, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema downtown helps

define what Austin is today, and to let it close would be to let a part of Austin die. I am unwilling to let that happen. I hope that you will help me in this
chailenge.

DOWNTOWN Dir. Vernon Zimmerman 1972,35mm,88 min, R You've seen Raquel do now see Claudia Jennings do it. Jennings was the bad girl supreme who ruled the drive-ins in the'70s. In movies like GATOR BAIT and TRUCK STOP WOMEN she kicked ass with the best of them and looked great doing it. If there was a white Pam Grier, claudia was it. This takes the familiar rags to richei story throws in a lot of sex and violence and everybody has a funky good time.

ARRESTED DEVETOPMENT SEASON 3 DVD RETEASE PARTY

WITH GEORGE-MICHAEI AND MAEBY LIVE IN PERSON! 5AT, SEPT 2,7 PM, ALAMO DOWNTOWN
tlvr INTTRA(TlVt EVENT WITH DVD VlDE0, 100 min It seemed poised to save the modern sitcom single-handedly, but mainstream America didn't know what they had. SHOWTIME was rumored to be saving the show for a while, but then those deals fell apart, too. And so we can't tell you to come to the theater to celebrate the new season ofARRESTED DEVELOPMENI because there won't be one. Ever. That sucks. The show, however, never did. And that's why we're crazy thrilled that we are able to tell you that this summer we're bringing GEORGE MICHAEL and MAEBY to the theater live in person! That's right, Michael Cera and Alia Shawkat are going to be on hand for one night only to walk us through hand-selected clips and give us all the behind-the-scenes stories and secrets that they weren't talking about while the show was on the air.

THEWIRE: SEASON 4 PREMIERE
THURSDAY, SEPT 7,7:30 PM, ALAM0 D0WNTOWN, DVD.60 MIN We haven't found a way to make it happen yet, but there's nothing we'd like better than to have a night of pub crawling with Detective McNulty, our favorite alcoholic/divorced detective on television in re-

cent years. Like everyone else on THE WIRE, his character is almost a stereotype, but then becomes so much more and so much realer than anything else. So sure, his life is a mess, he's kind of an asshole, and he's way too focused on trying to achieve an unwinnable task and would never make a very loyal friend. But damn. The man knows how to put 'em back and bitch about the system. And that's just what we like. Since we can't drink with him (yet), we're thrilled to take what we can get, especially when it's a sneak preview of THE WIRE's muchanticipated season four premiere! (Henri)

6IIMORT GIRTS sEASON PREMIERE
TUESDAY, SEPT

19,7 pm, ALAM0 50UTH LAMAR, HDTV,60 MIN Okay, so we weren't really expecting much when the WB first premiered

THE GILMORE GIRLS. A young mom raising her teen daughter in a small town and then the two of them growing up and learning about life and love together? That's the kind of crap we would expect from a show that made it to broadcast with development money from the Family Friendly Forum's script development fund. But then something unexpected happened - the show didn't suck at all. lt was, shockingly enough.,, good. We found ourselves caring about who was dating who, wondering about how Rory would make it through her first dances, if Lorelai would ever find real and lasting love, and we laughed along

with the fantastically fast-paced dialogue. Simply put, we're glad it
made it onto the CW. (Henri)

VERONICA MARS SEASON PREMIERE TUESDAY, SEPT 19,8 pm AIAM0 S0UTH LAMAR, HDTV,60 MIN It's hard to believe, but there are STILL people out there who think that VERONICA MARS is just "that show with the teen chick detective." Those people, those clueless, pathetic people, have no idea how much they've been missing out on. Fortunately for them, they can pick up the DVDS of seasons one and two and watch as Rob Thomas crafts a noir-styled television show that not only adds new twists to the genre by setting it all in sunny small.town southern California but also develops the best blend of season-long arcs with episodic satisfaction that we've ever seen. Even the episodes that we thought were going to be stand-alone mysteries kept coming back and adding to the final story, and we were wowed by it every time. The season 2 finale wasn't as much of a cliffhanger as season 1 (thankfully!), but we've still missed Veronica terribly and can't wait to welcome her to her new home on the CW by giving her more of the big screen treatment. 1974, Sam Peckinpah directed BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA, a film that is, even for Peckinpah, relentlessly bleak in its portrayal of life. Tellingly, it was one of the last films Peckinpah produced; it was also the fearsome director's personal favorite of the many movies he directed. Wanen Oates stars as Bennie, a piano-player who happens upon two bounty hunters who have been dispatched by a Mexican rancher to collect the head of Alfredo Garcia. lt seems that Garcia had impregnated the ranchers daughter, who wants his head as indisputable proof that this deviant is dead, and he won't be bothering his family again. Penniless and out of luck, Bennie does a little snooping of his own, discovers that his girlfriend knows where the final resting place of Garcia is, and decides to usurp the bounty hunters by severing Garcia's head and collecting the cash for himself. Peckinpah unleashes some ferocious scenes of violence as Bennie attempts to complete his task, while Oates is magnificent as Bennie, who slides into madness as events take a turn for the worse; he even resorts to talking to Garcia's decapitated head, and washing it in the shower.

The more beer you drink, the funnier this picture becomes. That's why we are starting you off right, with a free bottle of limited edition ELSINORE BEER with every ticket, just like Bob and Doug guzzle in the movie. The story follows the McKenzie brothers to the Elsinore
brewery, where they try to get free beer by claiming they found a dead mouse inside a bottle of beer they bought. lnstead, they end up working

at the plant and get stuck in the middle of a plot by the brewmaster to take over the world. Without a doubt, the most retarded version of

Although the term 'yacht rock' generally refers to the highly polished brand of soft rock that emanated from Southern California during the late,70s and early ,g0s - it became a part of the vernacular practically overnight with the Channel 101 premiere of YACHT ROCK in June of 2005. J.D. Ryznar and Hunter Stair,s saga ietailing the unknown mythical origins of a previously obscure genre of music struck th6 audience like a lightning bolt. Ryznar devised the series after noticing several similarities between bands such as Steely Dan, Toto, and The Doobie Br6thers; in particular, their collaborations with each other and with singer-songwriter Kenny lggginr - thus forming the primary cast of YACHT ROCK. Almed only with a few friends, some witty dialogue, and often nothing more than a couple hundred bucks per episode - most of which, Ryznar says, "goes into feeding ihe cast and crew Clearly, it doesn't go into the wigs and mustaches."

A scruffy neighborhood of Boston sprouts a band of naive working-class kids who think they can shake up the world with their personal take on the punk rock experience, Not content, or possibly even competent enough, to be another Jam clone or a Clash clone, Unnatural Axe bash out their own brand of two-chord and three-chord rock, and crank it up extra high. Throughout 1978 and 1979 the Axe were playing regularly in New York and Boston as the opening act for the "big" UK and US new wave acts of the time. The Unnatural Axe discography is small, but what recordings do exist provide the documented proof that the Are were, and shall always remain, the most important punk band Boston will ever call its own. I understand, but try not to think about it, because Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty has been busy producing Burn to Shine, a series of DVDs featuring a bunch of bands playing one song each in a house scheduled for demolition at the end of the day. Since this installment (curated by

Filmed as the sun is setting, the DVD concludes with an incredible fire as we watch the house being burned to the ground by the fire department. This is beautifully shot and accompanied by an experimental spoken word piece by Brendan Canty. (Pitchfork Review)

llN. VlDaO UN RATE0 Canadian musician Dave Cool (his real name) started his own independent record label and found himself stumped when someone looked at his business card and asked, "What does Indie mean?" Think you know the answer? Not so fast. As Cool proves in this documentary, the definition of "Indie" has evolved over the past several years. And even if you froze this moment in time and asked everyone in the music industry to define what Indie means, at this exact moment, you'd get different answers and lots o{ debate. Does "Indie" just mean "unsigned"? If you're an Indie artist signed to an Indie label that is owned by a major label, are you still Indie? In addition to its gripping and long-overdue debate, the film also offers an exciiing look at the bargaining chips many Indie artists don'i realize they're holding.

OPEN SCREEN NIGHT
WEDNESDAYS, AUG 30 & SIPT 27 :: 10:00 pm :: D0WNT0WN DIRE(I0R: Y0U, VARI0US MEDIA, 56.50, 1 10 MIN

Open Screen Night started out with a simple idea: take the same type of open mike night venue that coffeeshops have been providing for crappy poets and whiny singer-songwriters for years except update it to give crappy filmmakers a venue for exposure, too. ln the beginning we imagined it would be a pretty painful night of video, with people bringing in old video projects they'd made for their high school English classes or boring old family home videos: We were wrong. We still get a few bad movies at every month's show, but over the years we've also had the privilege of seeing the world theatrical premieres of several really talented and amazing filmmakers.
Videos that started at Open Screen Night have gone on to Sun. dance or Atomfilms, and filmmakers that honed their craft and learned about audience reactions to their work at OSN have been hired at MTV or been invited to produce and direct music videos for real bands (not just crappy ones their friends are in), others have had their work featured in Spike & Mike's Sick & Twisted Festival ofAnimation, and the list goes on and on and so completely by accident we created the most freeform and truly independent film festival there ever was.

We are extremely excited to be launching a new show at the Alamo Drafthouse: SOUND SEEN, Austin's first VJ competition. ln this context, VJ's are not the Martha Quinns and Nina Blackwoods of the early days of MTV Here we are talking about the cutting edge of turntablism culture, taking the art of the DJ to an unbelievable new frontier. lf you happened to come out to the AT&T sponsored Austin Fuzion show featuring DJ Cut Chemist, you have an idea of what the show is about. VJs are live video performers who manipulate, edit and tweak video live in time to a DJ's music. We are trying to develop this scene in Austin with the launch of SOUND SEEN. We'll have a performance by a local DJ coupled with a competition of some of the region's best video artists and VJs. They will battle it out live, and the audience vote decides who takes home the cash prize and who is stuck with the 2nd place set of steak knives. Check back to the website (www originalalamo.com). We'll have full information about rules, prizes and details on the competition. Sound Seen is sponsored by Llvid Union/Livid lnstruments, an Austin companyJ makers of VJ hardware and software. (Tim)

THE R0AD T0 GUANTANAM0 - AUG 31 - 7:00PM 0lRt(T0R: Ml(HAEt WINTERBOTTOM & MAT Wl{lTECaO5$ 2$06 95MlFI. n ln this compelling docudrama by Michael Winterbottom and Mat Whitecross, the 'Tipton Three' narrate their own experiences in America's controversial offshore detention camp. The film opens with archive footage of George W Bush, flanked by a stern-faced Tony Blair, declaring his certain knowledge that all the detainees held in Guantdnamo are "bad people'i Everything that follows is designed to turn these words inside out, as three young British Muslims tell the story of how they came to be in US custody at Guantdnamo for over two years, and discuss the Kafkaesque horrors that awaited them there, until finally they were released without charge or apology. ROB NEWMAN'S HISTORY0F Olt - SEPT 20,7:00 PM ElRl(TOR: R0BIRT NEl,l,MAN 60MlN. UIDEO ITNRATED Rob Newman (who appeared at the Alamo in 2005 with his bookThe Fountain At The Center Of The World) is a British stand-up comedian, author and political activist who gets to grips with the wars and politics of the last hundred years - but rather than adhering to the history we were fed at school, he places oil centre stage as the cause of all the commotion. This innovative history programme is based around Newman's stand-up act and supported by resourceful archive sequences and stills with satirical impersonations of historical figures from Mayan priests to Archduke Ferdinand. Quirky details such as a bicycle-powered street lamp on the stage brings home the pertinent question of just how we are going to survive when the world's oil supplies are finally exhausted.
