Either you )ove thern or you hate them and Benais nnd Butlhead Da America is unlikelv to make ioo many converts to the cause of their inspired lunary but f& those who consider themseives squarely on the side of lowbrow shenanigans, Judge's feature debut is all that and more. Judge and co-witer Joe Stillman keep the iilm moving at roughly the pace of an old Three Stooges two-reeler, and amazingly, 90fl' of the gags hit home. There's very little that falls by the wayside here, and even though the film really doesn't expand our already considerable knor'vledge of these two losers deluxe, it manages to never feel redundant or contrived. cinematic history throughout: Jean Douchet's little {ilm about American girls who get taken for a ride by French playboys perfectly portrays many nuances that had never before bein capfured on film. Documentary master Jean Rouch, one of the god{athers of the New Wave, is represented in a spectacularly authentic and resonant segment that's one long continuous take for about 15 minutes siraight, following its protagonist from the breakiast table argument with her boy{riend into the street where she meets a mysterious man who wants her to go away with him. A wonderfully hilarious 10 minute segment"by Jean Daniel Pollet feahrres Michelline Dax playing the experienced Parisian prostitute to per{ection as she affectionately makes fun o{ her inexperienced john who looks like a French version of Buster Keaton. Rohmer's piece is about a salesman who gets into an altercation with a drunk man on the street and tiinks he might have accidentally killed him; it is very different from anything else Rohmer has ever done and, needless to say, quietlv masterful. In Chabrol's interesting and typically Hitchcockish 'horror-underthe-prim-bourgeois-surface' eipose piece Chabrol himself acts as the 'bourgeois' father of a miichievous boy who starts putting ear-plugs in his ears to keep from hearing his parents' constant arguments.

Screenplay (Robert Riskin), Best Sound Recording, and Best Director (Frank Capra). Mr Deeds Goes to Town is Frank Capra's classic screwball comedv about a village innocent who inherits $20 million, only to discover it's more trouble than it's worth. The screwball in question is Longfellow Deeds (Gary Cooper), a small-town greeting-card poet and tuba player transplanted to the big city to administer his newly inherited wealth, where {astpattering, wised-up cynics, sneering society denizens, and corrupt lawyers lord it over the ingenuous and straightforward. Deeds' idiosyncrasies are amply magnified in the tabloids by journalist "Babe" Bennett (Jean Arthur), dating Deeds as a cover, only to discover she's the sap when she falls irresistibly for him. But the damage has been done, when Babe's column is used by a pack of corrupt lawyers, Cedar, Cedar, Cedar & Budington, to prove Deeds mentally unfit. The miracle o{ this unforgettable comedy is how it embraces dark material, calling into question some common assumptions about capitalism while maintaining. an approachable atmosphere o{ light comedy, and deceptively so. Loosely adapted from the novel by Seishu Hase, Miike's latest but one of thit year (its box-office release in Japan at the tail end of 2000 was rapidly followed up by Dead or .Alite 2) plunges straight into the action in his own inimitable style, a practically wordless ten minute sequence in which our hero Mario (played by the BrazilianJapanese non-actor Teah) is unleashed from jail and sets out
straight away on an airborne mission by helicopter to retrieve his Chinese moll, the beautiful Kei (Michelle Reis) from a busload of illegal aliens on their way to being deported. delights in its own conceptual confusion. Rarely seen since its release in 1973 and never released on video, Wattstax is a hidden treasure among the concert films of the rock and soul era. It's a documentary of an August 1972 concert at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum meant to commemorate the 1965 Watts riots; the concert drew an overwhelmingly A{rican-American crowd of 100,000 and turned into a memorable black-pride event, Director Mel Stuart not only focuses on the big names on the Coirseum's stage but also takes his camera out into the communitl', rvatching and listening to Watts residents talk about everyday life in the inner city. (Look for Ted Lange, later Looe Bont's Isaac the bartenderl) The film's highlights include R&B legend Rufus Thomas wittily corralling the crowd after it abandons the bleachers to dance to his "Do the Funky Chicken"; the Bar-Kays encapsulating eve4'thing that was screamingly excessive about '70s funk with "Son of Sha{t"; and Richard Pryor playing Greek chorusand reminding us how beautiful he was. - Bnltimore City Paper.
