Alcohol
Have you heard the screeching of a drifting car and the shrill scream of a woman echoing through the alleys? Have you heard the cries of the mother that has to wash the wounds of her beaten child? Have you seen the broken families? Have you seen the broken people or the empty bank account? Drinking and alcoholism is very big problem in our world today. According to the National Health Interview Survey more than 50% of the population of America aged 18 or older uses alcohol as a stimulant/depressant. Many religions believe that it is wrong to drink, so where do we stand in this. What does the Bible actually say about drinking? Although the Bible never directly says that we should never drink alcohol, seeing as during that time, wine was a common drink used during mealtimes (Mark 14:25 – I tell you that truth, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vice until that day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God) it does advice against it and gives some consequences. In Genesis 9:20-26, we see that Noah has drunk the wine from his vineyard and is drunk and sleeping in his tent naked. His son Ham sees him, which brings shame to himself, his father, and his descendants. From this we gather that drunkenness is unwise and brings shame. Romans 14: 20-21 says: Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a man to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall. If we are aware that under the influence of alcohol we are harsh or angry, we should abstain from it. If we know that we have the power to persuade someone to do

something that is bad, or cause them to stumble, and we are also aware that we would use that against them when drinking, we should also abstain from it. Since all food is ok, or clean, according to the Bible, it is ok to drink wine, but we should beware because the consequences for drunkenness are still the same. 1 Corinthians 6:12 says: Everything is permissible for me – but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible for me, but I will not be mastered by anything. Even though drinking is allowed, it may not be to our benefit to drink. We must not be mastered by alcohol or go to it instead of dealing with problems. Another aspect to not indulging ourselves in excessive drinking is the fact that common sense tells us not to. When drunk, we lose the ability to think clearly and therefore do things that we wouldn’t do under normal circumstances. We may say things that we don’t actually mean to say or do things that we don’t want to do. We may hurt people in ways that we would never dream of hurting them, simply because we don’t have the same control over our brains. Proverbs 23:29-30 says: Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot? Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed wine. Many people go to drinking in order to forget certain memories or to throw aside certain situations that they don’t feel like dealing with. We see here, however, that the one who drinks “has sorrow” and “has strife”. Therefore it is better to deal with the problem at hand instead of trying to forget about it because it will still be there when the alcohol wears off. Let us be wise: Listen, my son and be wise, and keep your heart of the right path. Do not join those who drink too much wine or

gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.
