25 Years of Growth: Leadership From e Ground Up

October 4th - October 5th 2008
Doral Desert Princess Resort

Welcome
Welcome to beautiful Palm Springs and UCI’s 25th Annual Randy B. Lewis All-University Leadership Conference! Each year, a select group of UCI students has the opportunity to spend a weekend away from campus for the purpose of enhancing their leadership skills, discussing issues facing the campus community, and forging relationships among administrators and other student leaders. As conferees, you join an “All-U” alumni of over 4,420 students that have participated in this program since its establishment in 1984. To this day, the All-University Leadership Conference remains the only event of its kind among the University of California campuses. Our conference theme, 25 Years of Growth: Leadership From The Ground Up, hopes to inspire students to examine what makes up a leader today. We welcome our new Law School Dean, Erwin Chemerinsky to the conference to deliver the opening keynote addressing his vision for UCI’s Law School while sharing his perspective on free speech in an academic environment. Our conference planning committee is excited that Dean Chemerinsky accepted our invitation to kick-off this year’s program and we are looking forward to introducing him to our UCI student leadership. As the conference chair, I would like to express my deep appreciation to the dedicated group of students and administrators who served on the conference planning committee. This resourceful group met every other week throughout the summer to plan every nuance of this program. Thanks also to those campus administrators, student leaders, and alumni that contributed their valuable time to facilitate our conference workshops and discussion groups. Above all, thank you, UCI student leaders, for being a part of this conference and for your many contributions on behalf of the campus community. The planning committee trusts that you will find much in the next two days which challenges you, causes you to think, and provides you with insights into your roles as campus leaders. Our hope is that this conference will better prepare you for leadership in a changing world. Sincerely,

Rameen Talesh

The “Head Shot” Syndrome: Understanding Your World View, Comfort Zone, and Cultural Lens
Presenter: Kevin Huie, Director / Cross-Cultural Center Part of becoming an effective student leader is learning to manage, communicate, and work with your diverse constituency. In order to do this, one must understand how his or her world view, comfort zone and cultural lens can have an effect on actions, interactions and reactions with and among one another. This interactive workshop allows participants the opportunity to analyze the ways in which they see and interpret others, to assess their comfort levels with difference, and to increase their awareness of one’s ability to make presumptions based on appearance. Participants will also be able to set an action plan in developing their own intercultural effectiveness.

Zot Groups
The Issues of Free Speech: How can we better appreciate different opinions and points of view?

Facilitator: Leya Worcester, Public Health Association

We live in a country that has its historical roots in free speech: the First Amendment prohibits the United States Congress from making laws that infringe on freedom of speech, but there are limitations on this freedom. How can we, a group of leaders at UCI, continue to appreciate the diverse set of opinions and points of view? In this Zotgroup, our goal is to act with compassion and sensitivity as we accept the opinions of others. We will strive to learn from each other in an atmosphere of positive interaction and mutual respect.

Anteater Pride: Zot-Style

Facilitator: Tiffany Go, ASUCI, Alpha Chi Omega

A common complaint about UC Irvine is that it is an apathetic commuter school. Ask leaders on this campus how they feel about UCI and apathetic is not one of the words you hear. Our goal is to spread that love and pride to every Anteater. Come discuss what can be done to ensure that all students reap the benefits of a more unified campus. Expect laughs, interesting facts about UCI, and spirit freebies. Doing it ZOT-STYLE will never go out of fashion!

Political Engagement

Facilitator: Neysa Nankervis, Administrative Intern, Pi Beta Phi

Political engagement is the combination of political awareness and participation. With such a significant election fast approaching it is important that students have a clear understanding of the various ways to get involved and actively participate on campus and in the community. This Zot Group will be an opportunity to openly ask questions, state concerns and discuss amongst fellow students the many branches of political engagement.

Student Space on Campus

Facilitator: Sarah Bana, Student Center Board, Circle K

Everyday, thousands of students use the Student Center, the Bren Events Center, and the Anteater Recreation Center. All three of these entities are integral parts of student life, and in turn, are at least partially funded by student fees. Come discuss the future of these facilities as well as the possible changes that can be made to enhance the AntLeader experience.

Making the Grade: How do we score in diversity and inclusivity at UCI?

This discussion will include topics related to race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, disabilities, safety, student health, and more.

Managing Your Most Valuable Resource: Time
Presenter: Sally Peterson, Dean of Students Did you ever wonder why some students seem to have more time than others? The fact is, that when it comes to one of our most valuable resources, time, everyone has an equal share of it, each of us are forced to spend it at the same rate, and each of us has all there is of it - that is the paradox of time. Attend this workshop on one of your most valuable resources and learn how you can manage yourself with respect to the “clock.” You will identify your own “time wasters,” learn techniques to eliminate them, and emerge as a more organized student leader for the year to come.

Catching Your Breath - Stress Management for the Active Student Leader

Presenter: Leigh Porier-Ball, Associate Director / Health Education Center Are you stressed? Do you find yourself skipping meals? Do you sacrifice sleep due to your busy schedule? Does ‘working out’ for you mean running from class to meetings to study groups? Unfortunately, some student leaders are willing to sacrifice their own well being in order to help their organizations. However, your own personal health contributes to the success of your organization. Relaxation is a key part of maintaining physical, mental and emotional wellness. Relaxation and healthy stress management quiets your mind, calms your body and allows you to perform at your personal best. This workshop explores techniques and resources available to manage stress and enhance personal wellness. It is designed to be active in nature with time for personal reflection.
