The present study is designed to explore in detail the cost structure and returns ofShawl industry of Handicraft sector in district Srinagar which is the major producerof handicraft goods in Kashmir Valley. The main focus of the study is whether theindustry can help to raise the income levels of people associated with it and offermore employment opportunities to the people of the State. The results of the studyreveal that Gross returns per rupee of investment in shawl industry on an averageaccounts to Rs 2.47. The study further reveals that Net returns per rupee of investmentare high accounting to Rs 1.47, which implies that every one rupee of investmentfetches a profit of one and a half rupee. Besides, the study also throws some light onsocio-economic profile of the handloom unit owners.
