PART II | ISSUES OF INTEREST Please review the mission statement of the Stonewall Democratic Club of Greater Sacramento. Mission Statement Advance equal rights for all people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity Support public policies that advance lesbian, gay, bisexual, & transgender (LGBT) equality at all

 

levels of government

Elect qualified, openly LGBT people to public office as well as other Democratic Party candidates

who support LGBT equality
  

Work within the Democratic Party to advance LGBT equality and full recognition of LGBT families Educate the public at large about LGBT issues and concerns Promote the Democratic Party’s message of economic justice and social equality for all

1. Do you support the goals and purposes of Sacramento Stonewall Democratic Club, as outlined above? ( x) Yes ( ) No 2. Identify one of the goals of the mission statement and elaborate how you have helped to achieve one of the objectives. Educate the public at large about LGBT issues and concerns – I work at a Non-Public School (NPS) for special education students who are emotionally disturbed and live in group homes. Many of the boys at this school are Gay or Bisexual but few admit to this. We have had several boys who attempt suicide upon realizing that they are attracted to a member of the same sex. I believe that part of my job, as a teacher, is to dispel myths and lies that take on the ring of truth because they are repeated so often. Among the myths I regularly hear and attempt to dispel are that all gays want to be girls, lesbians are all “hot”, LGBT people cannot be faithful to one person, and gays are not interested in sports. I do not allow the term, “that’s gay” to be used in my class when the student means, “that’s stupid”. I point this out and tell them that denigrating a group of people because you don’t want to do an assignment is wrong. My hope is that these students will have the information to educate the public as they leave school and continue with their lives. Are you a member of the Sacramento Stonewall Democratic Club? If yes, how long have you been a member? ( x) Yes ( ) No 2 + years 3. Are you registered as a member of the Democratic Party? ( ) No ( x) Yes

4. Have you ever endorsed a Republican over a Democrat for elected partisan race, and if so, when and why? ( ) Yes ( x) No 5. Will you be using a campaign consultant or campaign manager, and if so, who? I am in discussions with Capitol Campaigns. (x ) Yes 6. Are you or any of your staff or key volunteers openly LGBT? I have many LGBT friends who will be volunteering on my campaign. (x ) Yes ( ) No ( ) No

7. Do you support project labor agreements? Would you require project labor agreements in capital improvement projects? ( x) Yes ( ) No I support project labor agreements and would work with the district facilities department to put PLAs in place. 8. Do you support the right of workers to collectively bargain? ( x) Yes Collective bargaining has helped equalize pay and form a middle class. 9. Do you support the right for a woman to access reproductive healthcare? (x ) Yes 10. Do you support comprehensive immigration reform, including a path to citizenship? ( x) Yes ( ) No We are allowing too many talented people to not reach their potential due to fear mongering. It is time to look at the opportunities that immigrants bring to this country. 11. Do you believe that entities receiving public funds or resources should be allowed to violate nondiscrimination policies (for example, the Boy Scouts allowed rent-free facilities at the public expense)? ( ) Yes ( x) No The use of public facilities means that the group using those facilities must comply with nondiscrimination policies. I was both a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader and was appalled at the differences in the attitudes of the two groups. I now have two young foster sons and will not even consider having them join the boy scouts because of the bullying I witnessed at Boy Scout events. 12. Would you support mandatory diversity training that includes LGBTQ issues for public employees? ( x) Yes ( ) No ( ) No ( ) No

I have attended optional diversity training and would support this being mandatory. 13. In your current professional capacity, have you advocated for mandatory diversity training? If your place of employment has diversity of training, did you advocate for the inclusion of LGBTQ issues? Why or why not? ( x) Yes ( ) No I currently work at a non public school for special education boys that live in group homes. Sexual orientation is an on-going issue. We meet regularly with the therapists and some of the therapists reach out to the gay and bi teens. Sex education is offered and I have joined the conversations to try to dispel many of the myths that the students have about LBGT and women. I will continue to work to broaden understanding of diversity, especially LGBT issues. 14. Would you support mandatory diversity training for all law enforcement personnel, including correctional peace officers, that includes LGBTQ issues? Why or why not? ( x) Yes ( ) No

There is a definite need in this area, especially since correctional officers are one of the few employment areas in the state with growth potential. Law enforcement needs to understand hate crimes rather than dismissing as pranks. We need all people, especially LGBT teens, to trust law enforcement to keep them safe. 15. Would you support the inclusion of domestic partner benefits in all employee contracts within the jurisdiction of the office you are seeking? ( x) Yes ( ) No

I actually advocated for this the first time I was elected to the Grant school board in 1998. I felt that domestic partner benefits would be a wonderful tool for attracting diverse staff. 16. Do you support marriage equality (equal marriage laws, permitting same-sex couples to marry under state law, just as opposite-sex couples do)? (x ) Yes ( ) No

I participated in 7 straight nights at the State Capitol – a rally of support for same-sex marriage. I have publically supported same sex marriage as a means to strengthen all families. 17. Did you publicly oppose Proposition 8? Are you active in the campaign to repeal Proposition 8?If so, what activities did you engage in (i.e. fundraising, rallies, etc.)? (x ) Yes ( ) No

I volunteered for phone banking and precinct walking along with donating money. I have volunteered with Equality California to collect signature and educate the public on marriage equality. I even got my son to volunteer with me as a mother/son straight supporters of marriage equality. 18. Do you support local funding for HIV/AIDS services, including, but not limited to, needleexchange programs? Why do you think needle-exchange programs are important to the LGBT community?

STONEWALL DEMOCRATIC CLUB OF GREATER SACRAMENTO Candidate’s Questionnaire
( x) Yes ( ) No I remember when HIV/AIDS first appeared and the fear and misinformation that surrounded the disease. Since that awful time, (my husband lost two brothers to AIDS in the early ‘90s) HIV/AIDS is still around but much of the misinformation still exists. I know a young woman with HIV who thinks nothing of using a common needle when she gets her tattoos. Drug users can’t be choosy when trying to appease their addiction and will use whatever needle is available. People will continue their unsafe habits – we, as a community, need to step in with education and clean needles to try to contain bad situations from becoming worse. 19. Do you support an age-appropriate public school curriculum that teaches awareness and sensitivity regarding sexual orientation and gender identity? ( x) Yes ( ) No My church, the Unitarian-Universalist Community Church of Sacramento, offers Our Whole Lives (OWL) education from age kindergarten through high school. Each of the sessions is geared towards the appropriate age. The children taking the OWL courses are able to understand sexuality and sexual orientation without having to experiment to find the answers. I would encourage a similar curriculum (minus any religious identification) in the schools. 20. Do you support the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) of 1996 which prohibits federal recognition of same-sex couples in the United States? ( x) Yes ( ) No Marriage is a state issue. The federal government has no constitutional right to prohibit the recognition of same sex couples. 21. Under DOMA, Gay and Lesbian foreign partners of legal U.S. citizens are not recognized for immigration purposes. Would you support federal legislation to allow Gay nationals to bring their partners into the United States under the same criteria as heterosexual nationals? ( x) Yes ( ) No

22. Do you support requiring insurance companies, including HMOs, to cover medically necessary sex reassignment surgeries and treatments for insured individuals diagnosed by a physician with Gender Identity Disorder or Gender Dysphoria? ( x) Yes ( ) No Health insurance needs to be focused on the overall health of an individual, including sex reassignment surgery. 23. Do you support requiring public employers to cover sex reassignment surgeries and treatments deemed medically necessary if a person diagnosed with Gender Identity Disorder or Gender Dysphoria? ( x) Yes ( ) No 24. Do you support allowing openly LGBT Americans to serve in the U.S. military? ( x) Yes ( ) No

STONEWALL DEMOCRATIC CLUB OF GREATER SACRAMENTO Candidate’s Questionnaire
Sexual orientation has nothing to do with serving in the military. The military should be more concerned about the overweight youth and undereducated youth in this country that are not qualified to serve rather than qualified LGBT service members. 25. Please describe how you will eliminate prejudice and/or discrimination in your own office if elected. When I served in the Grant School Board, I had staff amend policies on bullying to make it stronger and include perceived differences such as the student who is perceived to be gay or perceived to be dangerous because they wear black. Students need to feel safe in school and be allowed to express themselves as long as it is not a distraction or dangerous to others. School board policies that are enforced and staff training can help develop a culture of acceptance for all students and staff. 26. Please describe how your election to this office would be a benefit to the LGBT community. Schools are an area where students interact with a variety of peers and adults. It is imperative that schools be safe places for all students, especially LGBT students. As a school board member, I will bring my experience with encouraging understanding and acceptance of diversity for all students and staff. Please describe (briefly) what your top goals will be if elected to this office. Twin Rivers School District was formed in November 2007 when voters voted for merging four school districts in the North area to form one unified school district. Since that time, Twin Rivers has ignored the will of the voters and has made decisions that are compromising the education of students in the North area. Among the decisions include having adults and children share a campus, using private transportation services to support a charter school, selecting a superintendent with limited experience with secondary education and facilities, spending around $60 million to stop construction of a school in a high growth area, and paying an outside legal office over $1 million annually to supply legal services. California is in a dire financial situation however, Twin Rivers is receiving at least $4 million more annually than the previous four districts; getting the district on firm financial footing will be a top priority. I am also concerned about how the district is allocating resources; the perception of the overall community is that schools in the southern part of the district are receiving fewer services than schools in the former Rio Linda district. Gaining the public trust will be one of the top goals when I am elected. Please list other endorsements you have received. 27. If you receive endorsement, will you list and disclose Stonewall as an endorsing organization? Yes. 28. Sacramento County candidates only: Have you signed the county’s “Code of Fair Campaigning Practices”?

STOP Continue only if you are a school board candidate.
PART III | SUPPLEMENTAL 29. Why are you running for school board? What is your background in education? I served on the Grant School Board from 1998 to 2007. I have volunteered at schools while my children were growing up and currently serve on the School Site Council for my foster children’s school. I retired from Caltrans and went back to school to become a special education teacher where I currently teach various social studies courses (yes, I do bring in LGBT issues while studying history), pre-algebra and gardening. 30. Are you in support of creationism or intelligent design? ( ) Yes ( x) No 31. Does your district have an LGBT Task Force to address the needs and challenges facing LGBTQ students and employees in your district? If not, why not and what do you plan to do to change this? I do not know. When I served on the Grant board, we worked with a group (I don’t remember the name) on LGBT issues to be in compliance with state law. ( ) Yes 32. Does your district have a specific anti-bullying policy that includes LGBTQ students? I don’t know if Twin Rivers has any specific anti-bullying policies. ( ) Yes ( ) No ( ) No

33. What have you done to help make schools safer for LGBTQ students and staff, both classified and non-classified? Getting to know staff and the schools, being available so that staff and students feel safe talking to a board member is an important part of keeping schools safe. During my previous experience as a board member, I would work with administrative staff when I heard about bullying and make sure that the problem was not ignored. 34. Have you been a member of the Bond Oversight Committee? What experiences from the Bond Oversight Committee do you bring to your candidacy as a school board member?
