The ACC Mission
Alamance Community College promotes an

ACCF

open door to high quality education and learning. Central to this mission is the belief in the unique worth, value and dignity of each human being. Accordingly, Alamance Community College strives to help people realize their potential and attain an education that is personally meaningful, relevant to the needs of the community and state, and responsible to significant global trends.

We

We’ve all read the discouraging headlines: “Economic Growth at a Standstill,” “Unemployment Rate Continues to Climb,” and “Possibility of a Double Dip Recession Looms.” Yet these tough economic times did not deter those of you who believe in higher education and helping students in financial need from making this year’s Alamance Community College Foundation fund drive one of the most successful ever!

Our Pledge
The Alamance Community College Foundation guarantees that tuition

assistance will be provided to any qualified ACC student with a documented financial need.

As an alumnus of ACC, I have never been as proud of my alma mater, and the people in our community who believe in and support it with their hard-earned dollars, than I am at this moment. With the decline in textile and manufacturing jobs in Alamance County, many of our neighbors formerly employed in these industries have turned to ACC to prepare for new careers or obtain new skills. It would be impossible for some of these individuals to attend ACC without the financial support provided by the ACC Foundation. Our faculty and staff have risen to the occasion to meet this demand, offering more classes at nontraditional times—some starting as early as 7 AM—to meet the needs of our growing student enrollment. What an asset ACC is to our community! We are blessed beyond measure to have quality administrators, highly capable instructors, and committed support personnel who strive to create and maintain an environment conducive to learning. We are also blessed to have generous and caring contributors like you, whose financial support of the Foundation and its mission remains strong despite the difficult economic times. With all this going for us, it is easy to see why ACC now ranks among the top 15 community colleges, in North Carolina, based on enrollment.. Thanks for everything you do for ACC, the Foundation, and for helping to make the dreams of many students come true.

Chandler Concrete Named 2009 ACC Business Partner of the Year
Chandler Concrete Company was presented with the 2009 Business Partner of the Year Award by the Alamance Community College Foundation at the Leadership Breakfast in December 2009. The award recognizes area businesses that provide outstanding support to ACC students and employees. Chandler Concrete Company has shown great support of the College, the ACC Foundation, and the ACC Residential Carpentry program. Chandler Concrete’s contributions to ACC include: • Ted Chandler, President of Chandler Concrete, has been a member of the ACC Foundation Board of Directors since 2000. He served as president of the ACCF Board from 2003–2005, and has acted as Planned Giving Committee Chair and Investment Committee Chair. • Chandler Concrete has been a faithful donor to the ACC Foundation since 1983, with cash gifts totaling more than $70,000. In 2008, the company donated $50,000 for the Anniversary Campaign and earned recognition with the naming of the Business Technologies/Industrial and Graphics Technologies Division Suite in its honor. • As a major benefactor of ACC’s Residential Carpentry program, Chandler has contributed more than $20,000 in materials for use in construction projects. Chandler has further supported ACC by utilizing the educational services to train its staff. All Chandler employees have been trained in team building; selected staff received special computer keyboard training; and Chandler has utilized business specialists as lecturers at staff retreats through ACC’s Business and Industry Services. Chandler Concrete utilized the services of ACC’s Business and Industry Services for CDL Driving School to train its concrete truck drivers. Ten students went through a 35-hour program on ACC’s Graham campus in 2005.

Donor

With local unemployment rates remaining at historically high levels for the entire 2009–10 college year, students continued to pour into ACC classes looking to find new skills to make reentry into the local workforce a possibility. Alamance Community College, the last safety net for those destined to stand in the unemployment line, met the challenge to find classes and faculty to assist the record number of students attending. Without the generous financial support of the ACC Foundation, it would have been virtually impossible to meet many students’ needs for financial assistance. With tuition increases and enrollment growth, the task of helping more students find more funds to attend ACC has been daunting. Without the overwhelming positive financial support shown by local businesses/industries and individuals, we simply could not have done what we did. When times got tough, our base of support for the College and Foundation came through strongly. Unfortunately, conditions have not improved to the extent we can see an end to double digit unemployment. The dedicated members of the ACC Foundation Board of Directors continue to seek funds to meet student demands. And, for this diligence, we are so very thankful. Our faculty and staff also understand the struggle to assist students, and they, too, have increased their giving during these difficult times. With more than 95% of all full-time employees contributing to the Foundation this past year, I know they comprehend the importance of the Foundation’s support for students. Again, we are indebted to so many people who give so freely of their financial resources and energies to help make Alamance Community College and the Foundation the jewels they are. Thank you seems so trivial at times, but it is meant sincerely.

Chandler Concrete presentation included (l-r) Wally Shearin, Associate Dean of Industrial and Graphics Technologies; ACC Foundation 2009 President Jerry Bailey; Chandler Concrete President Ted Chandler; Tom Chandler; and Bob Chandler.

2009–2010

Crystal Graves is a lifelong resident of Burlington and a Williams High School alumna. Crystal has been inspired through her volunteer work with autistic children. When she transfers to UNC-Greensboro, she plans to blend the majors of special education and information systems. Vicky James-Jones is a wife and busy mother of four children. She plans to transfer to UNC-Greensboro to complete her elementary education degree. At ACC Vicky has been recognized as a Dean’s List student, an ACC Marshal, and is a member of the Spanish Club. Vicky chose ACC because many of her family members have preceded her at ACC and she saw the quality of education each of them received. Before entering the ACC Culinary program, James Kimrey worked as a land surveyor before his job was eliminated. It was then he decided to study something he loved. He chose ACC because after researching culinary schools, he learned ACC had one of the best programs in the state. Eventually James plans to open a fine dining restaurant.

He is currently a shift manager at Bojangles in Mebane. When Andrew graduates from ACC, he plans to be an HVAC technician with the goal of owning his own business. Jamie Seals started her ACC experience at 16 as a dual-enrolled, home-schooled high school student. At ACC, Jamie was a member of Phi Theta Kappa and served as president of the Spanish Club. Jamie will transfer to a four-year university in 2010 to study biology. Her plan is to become a physician’s assistant. Heather Seifert joined the 2009–2010 Ambassadors in January 2010. Heather holds a masters degree from Valdosta State. Heather has served as executive director of several non-profit preservation foundations in Oklahoma City, Greensboro and Atlanta. She graduated from the Horticulture Technology program in July 2010. Steve Smith retired from the US Army after serving in Iraq. He subsequently enrolled at ACC after learning about its high quality Horticulture Technology program. He has served as the Flora Club president, as a Student Government Association representative and as a student worker in the Horticulture Technology program. He is currently building a home in Caswell County. Acie Vanhooke is the proud father of a 12-year old daughter. He received an Associate in Arts degree from ACC in July 2009 and now is seeking an Associate in Science degree. Acie plans to transfer to Greensboro College. Acie has been recognized on the President’s List and graduated from the Minority Male Mentoring Program.

The Alamance Community College Ambassadors are a group of exemplary students who serve as representatives of the College at events both on and off campus. This program began 23 years ago in 1987.
For more than two decades, ACC Ambassadors have: • Helped welcome guests and new students to campus • Served as spokespersons for the Foundation and the College • Reached out to past students through the Alumni Phonathon • Developed enhanced leadership skills through their service.

The 2009–2010 Ambassadors class:
Sara Ambriz, originally from Mexico, now lives in Alamance County. She is employed as a support professional for a home health care company. Sara chose healthcare with the goal of becoming a traveling nurse. She enjoys making a difference in the lives of others. Sara is a member of Sigma Psi, was a Dean’s List student and served as an ACC Marshal. Sara graduated in July 2010. Brian Gallagher is a graduate of Western Alamance High School. After working for several years in machining, he decided to work toward his associate’s degree at ACC. Brian is considering transferring to UNC-Chapel Hill to study bioengineering or NC State to study engineering. Brian feels ACC will prepare him for whichever road he chooses. Brian will graduate in Summer 2011.

The ACC Retiree Campaign provides an opportunity for retirees and former employees of Alamance Community College to support current and future ACC students as they achieve their educational goals.

Retiree’s Campaign

ACC

Sharon Thompson earned an Associate in Applied Science degree in Criminal Justice Technology from ACC in 1978, later adding a Bachelor of Science from Shaw University and a Master of Education from NC State University. Thompson spent 11 years in law enforcement with the Town of Chapel Hill and City of Durham. Over the years, she increased her responsibilities and challenges: Director of the BLET (Basic Law Enforcement Training) program at Durham Technical Community College; Assistant Director, Community Policing with the Governor’s Crime Commission; Deputy Director of Public Safety at NC State University; and Training & Evaluation Coordinator with the NC Partnership for Children. From 1999–2006, she worked for the NC Community College System Office as a consultant and program auditor, where she wrote statewide policies and developed numerous education and training programs at the local, regional, and state level. Today, Thompson serves as Vice President for Academic Services at Brunswick Community College. There, she has initiated new academic programs in Biotechnology, Accounting, Surveying Technology and Lateral Entry Teacher Education. Under her leadership, the Brunswick Community College Tech Prep Program partnership with Brunswick County Schools won four state and two national awards for excellence. Thompson also volunteers with Relay for Life, the local food bank and her church. ———————————————————————————

We are seeking 20 retirees and former employees to make commitments of $1,000, payable over four years. Those 20 (or more) donors will create an endowed fund that will generate an estimated $1,000 or more annually to help support ACC students.

In April 2010, the Horticulture Department held an alumni reunion, inviting graduates from as far back as 1991.

2010 Inspiration Award
Fern Perkins was a high school drop-out who earned her GED from ACC, going on to make education her career choice. Her journey began while taking several university transfer classes at ACC, particularly inspired by instructor Gail Galbraith’s biology lab. That ultimately led her to a Bachelor of Science degree (magna cum laude) at Appalachian State University, doublemajoring in ecology/environmental biology and Spanish. She was the first in her family to earn a bachelor’s degree, and later added a Master of Science in Biology from ASU. Currently teaching at Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute and ASU, Perkins also volunteers with a Latino outreach organization and at the Boone area local foods chapter. Perkins says her experience at ACC taught her that education is the best tool for making the world a better place. ——————————————————————————— Other nominees for the Distinguished Alumni Award were: Renee Ward, Deputy Clerk for the City of Burlington Jacqueline Cobb, Certified Medical Assistant at UNC Healthcare Systems Angela Qualls, Assistant Register of Deeds for Alamance County, and Dawn Shamp, North Carolina novelist.

The ACC Foundation thanks these former employees who continue to help students reach their educational dreams.

Patsy Tingen, Long-Time Instructor of Business Administration
In the early 1990s, Patsy Tingen purchased an insurance policy with a payout to ACCF of $10,000 upon her demise. In the documents establishing the planned giving arrangement, Patsy states, “I am proud to be a graduate of ACC and would like others to have the same opportunity. She directed the ACC Foundation to use the net proceeds to establish an endowment, to be known as: The Patricia B. Tingen Memorial Alumni Scholarship Fund for Business Students The scholarship is to go to a fulltime student in the Business Technologies division. Sadly, Patsy passed away on September 1, 2010. Dr. Nadelman notes, "Patsy may have been one of our smallest, in stature, cheerleaders, but she was also one of our biggest. A graduate of TIA's Business Administration program, she went on to obtain her bachelor and master degrees and had a 34-year teaching career at ACC. She will be missed by students and staff alike." In her obituary, the family requested memorials to The Patricia B. Tingen Memorial Alumni Scholarship Fund for Business Students c/o The ACC Foundation, PO Box 8000, Graham, NC 27253.
