1. Although the wheel has been used in transportation for more than five thousand years, the first
pratical self-propelled vehicle to use the wheel, the bicycle, was invented only a little more than
one hundred years ago. The modern bicycle is one of the most efficient means of transportation
with respect to the amount of energy needed to carry a given amount of weight.
In order to prevent the frame of a bicycle from wobbling up and down, the hub of each wheel
must be located inthe wheel’s exact centre. This is because the centre of a circle is the only
point in the plane of the circle that is equidistant from every point of it. As a result, the sum of
the lengths of the two segments od each chord through the centre is the same.
