GPRS/EDGE Network Monitoring
Analysis Suite for GPRS/EDGE Networks Application Note
Technology overview Mobile data services such as e-mail, video clips and video blogging, multimedia messaging and high-speed Internet access are quickly gaining popularity amongst end users. As a result, service providers across the globe are seeking ways to enhance their access networks to offer these new bandwidth-intensive IP-based services. For GSM-based operators, the advent of GPRS and EDGE has provided exactly this type of IP-savvy access platform. There are several advantages of GPRS and EDGE, including: • Extensive coverage – as GSM (2G) has been deployed widely and enjoys a near-ubiquitous footprint • It is a lower risk investment than other market alternatives, such as a forklift upgrade to UMTS
There are many technical challenges in a GPRS/EDGE implementation, however. Arguably the toughest challenge lies in maintaining high levels of service quality as the transport mechanism is now based on TCP/IP. For service providers who want to offer quality mobile data services, detailed GPRS/EDGE network monitoring and troubleshooting is essential.

SUNRISE TELECOM

Sunrise Telecom GPRS/EDGE Monitoring Platform Solutions

3GMaster

The Sunrise Telecom solution Sunrise Telecom has developed a comprehensive set of non-intrusive analysis and monitoring suites for GPRS/EDGE and other advanced networks such as UMTS, CDMA, GSM and IMS/MMD. This application note focuses on the GPRS/ EDGE Monitoring and Analysis suite, which is currently supported by the Sunrise Telecom 3GMaster® family.

GPRS/EDGE Analysis Suite The GPRS/EDGE Analysis suite covers all the protocol interfaces in the GPRS/EDGE network. It is a complete monitoring solution and, in combination with the GSM suite, offers full coverage for GSM phase 2+ systems. The GPRS/EDGE architecture presents new challenges to Service Providers, because they not only have to guarantee a correct signaling traffic flow among a variety of Network Elements, but also Quality of Service for user traffic such as TCP/IP. The GPRS/EDGE Analysis suite allows full troubleshooting of both the signaling and user data protocols while simultaneously supporting decoding of all the main GPRS interfaces along with the TCP/IP protocols. Trace features like filtering make it easy to investigate problems involving Network Elements or User Traffic and extensive statistical reports provide real-time information about network performance and loading. The Call Detail Record (CDR) feature allows central collection of all data about user traffic so that users can generate statistics on network use and troubleshoot recurring problems. The GPRS/EDGE Analysis suite handles all aspects of GPRS/ EDGE network management: • Performance analysis • Troubleshooting of both signaling and data (TCP/IP) protocols • Network surveillance for immediate reaction upon detection of anomalies • Network planning for control of traffic loading among Network Elements • Service reporting to generate off-line statistics on network usage

GPRS/EDGE Network Monitoring

GPRS/EDGE Analysis results The GPRS/EDGE Analysis suite provides a unique set of results in real time, including: • Protocol Trace with full message decoding and presentation in compact, expanded, user-designed and graphical (arrow diagram) formats • Upper layer PDU reassembly • Filtering system based on a tree view of all major fields in the protocols for easy, intuitive analysis • Call Tracing over the Gb interface, based on the IP address (PDP Context Call Tracing), IMSI or P-TMSI • Full statistics counters in tabular and graphic formats on all protocol layers. • TCP/IP side: integrated TCP/IP monitoring package for the A-bis, Gb and Gn/Gp/Ga interfaces. Decoding of the IP/UDP/TCP layers and the main IP services like RADIUS, DNS, HTTP, WAP, SMPP, SMTP • Proprietary protocols support over A-bis interface. Special features
CDR, CDR-to-frames and Frame-to-CDR functions, and arrow diagrams

Multi-Interface Correlation

Automatic Multi Interface CDR/TDR Correlation and Call Tracing: CDR/TDR from up to 7 different interfaces protocol stacks can be correlated in real-time. The algorithms are based on combinations of matching keys from the following fields: IMSI, IMEI and IMEISV, Called/Calling numbers and MSISDN Numbers.

GPRS-Gb Signaling Deciphering

Deciphering is performed in real time and in post-analysis mode. Kc values are retrieved from the Gr interfaces and used to decipher the encrypted Gb interfaces. Retrieved IMSI and Kc keys are only stored in volatile RAM for privacy reasons. Deciphering is supported even when only P-TMSI addresses are detected (i.e. no IMSI is carried over the Gb interface) and even when a 3G mobile is roaming in a 2.5G network. GEA1 and GEA2 (GPRS Encryption Algorithms) are also fully supported.
Triggers

Call Detail Records show the complete call summary and highlight the main call information such as addressing, duration, and cause of disconnection. CDRs are generated over all the different GPRS/EDGE interfaces supported (see Supported Protocols section). The CDR-to-frame function automatically recovers all the related signaling frames and shows the entire call flow in graphical format (arrow diagrams). The Frame-to-CDR function automatically recover the CDR related to a selected signaling message.
CDRs for Distributed Monitoring

This feature allows the creation of an advanced ‘trap’ system that combines protocol events, counters and timers. Possible custom applications include: • Alarming • Filters • Call Traces • Statistics and other actions
Triggers - example of a script

CDRs collected from the 3GMaster portable protocol analyzer can also be forwarded to the Telecom Network Management System (TAMS) system for more detailed postanalysis, reporting and trending. This is a powerful addition to the service providers GPRS/EDGE toolset, as the same 3GMaster that is used in the field for troubleshooting and maintenance can also be used as a high-powered remote probe in a sophisticated distributed monitoring system.
