E

When I worked in the finance team at XYZorganisation for 3 years, I was responsible for the
monthly payroll for 50 staff, using the commercial “FakePayroll” package.
Throughout each month I processed changes to staff pay and pensions as advised by the
personnel department, created new pay records for starters and processed P45s for leavers.
Each month I prepared pay and pension payment schedules for input to the banking package for
authorisation by my manager; submitted monthly returns to HMRC for tax and NI; and prepared
summary statements for the accounts. I managed staff loans and childcare voucher deductions. I
was also responsible for year-end processing and tax returns.
Before that, when I worked for BigBuildingCo for 18 months, I was part of the payroll team, where
I was responsible for processing weekly timesheets and calculating overtime payments for
hourly-paid staff.

Please use as much space as required.
Please add extra rows if necessary.
Before completing the rest of the form, can you briefly tell us why you would like this job?

I am a human rights activist currently based in Manchester and I’ve dedicated the past three
years of my life raising awareness on the social issues we face in the city; in the nation and
globally. It’s ironic really, because you have a photo of one of the events I help organise on your
job description which shows Darren Nesbitt singing at ‘Wake Up Manchester’ which we host on
Market Street on the last Saturday of the month. A collective of all of the activists in the area and
beyond collaborating with an open mic; inspirational music; speakers; debates; campaigning
and so much more. Each month the event grows and we’re now working alongside many of the
groups in the region. I have led a life of injustice and want to use my experiences to create a
society here in the UK that offers justice for its citizens.

I’m currently self-employed but I have spent a considerable amount of time on activism and
your role would allow me to continue with my passion whilst simultaneously being paid to do
so. Allowing me to be able to fund my projects and network with likeminded people. This role
would certainly mobile me and would aid our campaigns, allowing me to concentrate on
activism instead of self-employment.

I am doing many of the tasks that you require for free at the moment and currently operating my
projects has cost me a considerable amount of money over the past few years. I want to
concentrate my efforts on activism solely and this position would give me the flexibility to help
you with your campaigns as well as progress with my own.

As I’m already orchestrating several active organisations in Manchester, I genuinely believe that
it’s the most logical role for me to continue with my work for justice and having the support
from a national organisation such as yourselves would be overwhelming. Global Justice is
exactly what I’m fighting for and seeing this position was ‘meant to be’.

Here’s a brief background of me… You’ll see why I want this role because I have lived a life of
injustice.
As I child I was always questioning everything, always on a computer and constantly learning
from the platform that never judged me, the internet. I was obsessed with my amigos deluxe
paint and regularly dialled in to B.B.S.’ to download e-zines which detailed information which I
thrived. I displayed a keen enthusiastic approach to electronics; coding; design; art and music.

Home life became problematic when my mum met her new partner and he was extremely
abusive. He used to beat my mother and me constantly when he was drunk and at the age of 15 I
left home, asking the local council for help. I was sent to a hostel, which had a bar inside and
was full of people with mental health issues and addiction problems. After three horrific nights
in that place, I left and my life spiralled downhill from there onwards. I was preyed on by gangs
as I was homeless and they offered me a place to live in exchange for becoming a part of their
illegal organisation.

Over the years I lived in a cycle of homelessness; poverty; addiction; imprisonment and became
a slave to the judicial system. When I first went to prison at a young age, there was a chance of
rehabilitation as the prisons offered vocational courses; open university degrees; training and
other employment opportunities for release. Now, when you enter a prison such as Forest Bank
in Manchester, you’re working 40 hours a week for £12.50 for a corporate like Sodexo which is
lobbying central government for further legislation to criminalise the poor. Out of that £12.50
you have to purchase writing materials; envelopes; toiletries; food; phone credit; stamps;
underwear; tobacco; drinks etc. If you have read a tabloid newspaper trying to glamourise
prisons, it’s nonsense. If anyone’s bought a Playstation 2 or the old xbox, they have purchased
it for an overpriced amount such as £200 and they’ve saved up 16 weeks to buy it. That’s 640
hours work to buy a console which the prison is actually profiting from in several ways. Upon
release there’s no housing advice; intervention or support and the current system is failing
society. There’s hardly any chance of rehabilitation and reoffending rates are the highest they’ve
ever been. Homeless people are now seen as revenue for corporate prisons when we should be
offering these people ‘wrap around’ support and tangible housing.

I have been campaigning for the rights of homeless people both locally and nationally for a few
years now and have been involved with local organisations for several years.

I genuinely believe that we can create justice if we pressurise those who oppress us.

Social media and the internet in general is our greatest tool to do that.

EXPERIENCE
1

Experience of organising successful public
events

Essential

Desirable

E

Over the past four years I have organised many events throughout Lancashire and Manchester which
address the social issues and oppression created by our oppressive government; banksters and
corporations which have enslaved the population.

I orchestrate far too many events to list them all here but here’s a few:

Frack Free Pendle - Anti-Fracking Awareness Campaign

Help The Homeless: North West / Help The Homeless: East Lancashire Homeless Outreach - Weekly
event

Wake Up Manchester - A monthly event which projects the truth and amalgamates activists throughout
the country

Tech Tools For Activism - A quarterly workshop

Manchester Angels - Street Kitchens; Demonstrations; Protests; Social Events

Manchester Love Kitchen - A weekly outreach providing food to the homeless with live artists

Manchester Peace Party / The Party Protest - An Anti-Racism Music Event Which Has Seen The EDL &
NWI Evacuate Manchester

Manchester People’s Assembly Against Austerity - Protest The Tory Conference - #TakeBackMCR

2

Experience of starting up and/or working with
local activist groups

E

I have setup many activist campaigns over the past few years and network with a huge proportion of
activists throughout the North West of England who are active. I am a regular on various online forums
and engage with activist groups that operate both online and offline. I am also active on an international
level with some inspirational mentors such as Birgitta Jonsdottir, who produced the ‘collateral murder’
film whilst at wikileaks and is now an Icelandic parliamentarian with the Pirate Party who helped jail the
banisters and is campaigning for international democracy and justice. I have arranged for her to be
present at the events we have organised during the Tory party conference next month in Manchester
along with many others like Jeremy Corbyn, Owen Jones, Artist Taxi Driver - Mark McGowan, Frankie
Boyle and many more. I’m currently organising the weeks activities and events which can be found
here: http://www.thepeoplesassembly.org.uk/manctimetable

My involvement with the People’s Assembly has given me a great platform to connect with other local
activist groups that I haven’t yet worked with and I’m networking each and every day.

I help organise ‘Wake Up Manchester’ which hosts an array of activist campaigns on the last Saturday
of each month on Market Street in Manchester outside Barclays.

I have setup ‘Manchester Angels’ which is a huge movement addressing many social issues in the city,
this page has around 20,000 pro-active altruistic types just on Facebook. With all of the various
campaigns I operate, there’s around 200,000 people in the north which are following on various
platforms such as Google+; Twitter; Nationbuilder; YouTube; Wordpress etc.

I have also setup several grassroots initiatives in Lancashire and Manchester that concentrate on nonviolent direct action operations.

I also manage the website & social media for The People’s Assembly Against Austerity here in
Manchester and Lancashire.

In April, following a ‘March For The Homeless’ I organised in Manchester, I setup a ‘Homeless Camp’
outside Manchester Town Hall and was arrested shortly after for two spurious charges in a poor attempt
to disassemble the protest. From that day to this present day we have developed homeless camps in
the city centre and the camps have been evicted several times with the council now imposing an
inhumane injunction that stops homeless people from using a tent. This is a clear infringement on our
human rights and we’re currently opposing that decision with a petition, please feel free to read the full
details here: https://www.change.org/p/manchester-city-council-greater-manchester-police-davidcameron-mp-district-judge-ranj-matharu-richard-leese-please-revoke-the-decision-to-criminalise-thehomeless-of-manchester-for-using-a-tent-offer-them-tangible-housing-options-and-intervention-in?
just_created=true
The information on there is rather long winded but it details everything that has happened since the
start of the campaign. Please read the entire petition.

We have contacted every single media corporation in the country as well as various alternative media
platforms in order to raise awareness on the matter and we have had many people show support.
Natalie Bennet from the Green Party; Jody Latham from the TV show ‘Shameless’; Terry Christian;
Frankie Boyle and many more who have now come together to oppose many other problems that the
welfare reform is creating. I am in contact with many predominant activism media channels which
project information online and will be willing to utilise all of these with your campaigns. I have contacts
in many media organisations and have managed to attend and take part in a whole array of political TV
and radio programmes in the past two years.

The Tory party conference event in Manchester between the 2nd and 10th of October will create a huge
platform to inspire a huge proportion of the north to get involved in activism. I’ve even managed to get
Birgitta Jonsdottir to attend, to give an inspiring speech and also a ‘Q&A’ after Miguel Marques shows
his documentary film called ‘Pots, Pan & Other Solutions’ which details the Icelandic revolution
following the 2008 financial crash. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=GtzbWxb9nuQ and also see one of Birgittas inspiring speeches here called ‘We the people, are the
system’: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eq0mRyq8wlE

3

Experience of working in a campaigning
organisation

E

I am currently handling the People’s Assembly Against Austerity media and have spent the past few
years working on the Manchester Angels and Help The Homeless campaigns. My entire professional
background has been online marketing and event planning so I’m adopting that approach to the
activism and it seems to be working perfectly. I have helped many organisations with their social media
marketing and have used this experience to maximise their return on investment using marketing skills
and analysing demographics and metadata to target specific audiences and form strategy. This is my
passion now and I’ve been doing this for the past 3 years.

4

Experience of public speaking and/or
facilitating workshops

E

I regularly speak at various events throughout the North West and host several workshops for activists
in Lancashire and Manchester. I’m regularly in the media and am confident addressing a crowd.

uCLAN (University of Central Lancashire) held an event called ‘Inspirations’ and I did a public speech
there detailing my pathway to activism after leading a criminogenic lifestyle in my youth. I have been
asked to speak at the University of Edinburgh next month for another speech and workshop.

We host a monthly ‘Tech Tools For Activism’ workshop in Manchester which teaches activism how to
protect themselves online and offline using technology that everyone should have access to.

I have just recently held a workshop at the International Reclaim The Fields Camp where activist from
all over the world came to engage in skill sharing workshops. I hosted a social media marketing & ’tech
tools’ workshop, teaching activists how to organise campaigns online; how to use technology creatively
to target specific audiences and how to protect themselves from the malicious online dangers they face
whilst engaging in activism.

5

Experience of producing
materials (e.g. leaflets, briefings,
websites)

D

With over 20 years experience in graphic design, I have knowledge of promotional materials such as
vinyl banners; large format printing; screen printing; direct to garment print; 3D modelling; augmented
reality and photography.

I regularly develop websites and am familiar with many platforms such as Wordpress; Joomla; Drupas
and Nationbuilder. I was asked by Nationbuilder to become an architect for their software and met with
the company last year to discuss the potential for my involvement in the project. I’m using the package
for my own campaigns and also The People’s Assembly Against Austerity site.

I’m familiar with all of the Adobe CS packages for print and design as well as various other industry
standard packages like Final Cut Pro; Corel; 3D Studio Max; Blender and many more other graphics
software packages.

I’m constantly evolving with the sector and find it easy to learn new software.

6

Experience of using social media
to promote activism

D

Over the past two years I have created a movement online challenging the problems surrounding
homelessness; addiction; austerity; poverty in general; injustice and the lack of democracy, primarily in
the North West of England, but inevitably worldwide.

Using a combination of various skill-sets that I have acquired during my professional career, I now use
a whole range of methods to reach a wide audience online and inspire them to get involved in activism
such as film; graphics; apps; blogs and websites. My forte is in sales & marketing and I’m now using
over 16 years of experience within that sector and applying it to activism. I have setup several
campaigns using Facebook; Google+; Twitter; Youtube; Hootsuite; Sprout Social; Nationbuilder and
others to reach the desired audience in order to transition them from viewers to activists. The results
have been amazing.

7

8

9

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND UNDERSTANDING
1

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
in both verbal and written forms

Essential

Desirable

E

I believe that I am able to communicate articulately and effectively whilst talking to people and also in
written format. I take time to think about my response before I take action and apply a professional
attitude to campaigning. I think it’s extremely important whilst being scrutinised by so many people if
you’re involved in activism.
2

Proven organisational and administrative skills

When given tasks, I prioritise instantly and work within the desired timescale. I’m compute literate and
find it easy to organise myself; a team and my work. I multi-task constantly and use analytic skills to
create logical solutions to the task in hand whilst applying a firm decision making process. I’m selfdisciplined; focussed and set goals in order to maintain a healthy planning and implementing process
that creates the desired result. Time management and regular breaks are key to a healthy professional
positive lifestyle.

3

Proven ability to prioritise work effectively and
meet deadlines

I always work effectively and meet deadlines that are required of me. The most memorable example
has to be a ‘dream wedding’ that I organised and raised funds for. A local man was dying of a rare form
of throat cancer and all he wanted to do before he died was to marry his partner. I had 10 days to
organise their wedding and was told by every wedding planner I contacted that I couldn’t do it in that
timescale. I defied their logic and raised £30,000 to do so.

Please watch the short video here: http://www.itv.com/news/2012-04-05/dream-wedding-for-coupleafter-facebook-fundraiser/

4

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to
work well in a team, with staff, activists and
volunteers

Confident people skills allow me to interact with the general public; clients; higher authorities; peers;
vulnerable people and subordinates with integrity; passion and enthusiasm. I tend to build confidence in
others too whilst conversing which is a great tool when team building as it highlights the traits we can
amalgamate and use together in order to create positive social change. I can adapt and function as part
of a team as well as working under my own initiative. I believe that it’s important to be able to put your
point across as well as listen to and understand other peoples points of view. Whether I’m speaking to
members of an organisations team; my volunteers; public/private staff or activists, I try to show the
upmost respect at all times.

5

Ability to motivate and enthuse others

I believe that I’m capable of motivating many people within the North into activism and seem to be a
catalyst for social change in the north. Many people pay attention to the campaigns I operate and I
have a natural gift which allows me to transition debate into action. This is evidential with the amount of
people following the campaigns online and offline. Hundreds of thousands of people now follow my
campaigns intended for positive social change. We need to harness that and direct it towards issues
that need addressing immediately like T.T.I.P.

6

Local knowledge of the activist and
campaigning environment in Manchester

E

As I’m currently in the heart of the activist community in Manchester, it seems logical that I should apply
for this job because I have been involved in the grassroots and direct action activities for over three
years now and have a good network of the campaigning groups that operate within the city and beyond.

We currently help and network with activists from all over the UK, but more prominently around
Manchester, Cheshire, Liverpool, Lancashire and Yorkshire. I have contacts all over the world and
regularly take part in actions internationally.

7

Awareness of the political and
economic structures which make
people poor and of issues of
exploitation and oppression,
especially in a global context

D

I feel that I’m aware of the current economical/political climate and this can be demonstrated in a short
paragraph.

We’re currently living in a country that offers a false sense of democracy and hardly any justice. Every 5
years the electorate chooses a primary colour and we are enslaved by that particular parties policies.
The judicial system is about to collapse and we’re seeing corporate entities like G4S, Sodexo & Serco
etc lobbying government for further legislation to criminalise the poorest and most vulnerable in society.
The austerity measures imposed by government are stripping vital resources and support for these
people and they have a really poor chance of rehabilitation. Our government is facilitating fiat currency
and is currently £1.5 trillion in debt with the I.M.F. The more money we print, the greater the gap
between the elites and the poor. Austerity is a confidence trick which oppresses the poorest and most
vulnerable in society. Especially when we’re portraying to the world that we’re the 5th richest economy
whilst simultaneously homelessness has risen 50% under Cameron; there’s over 1,000,000 people
dependent on food banks and 90,000 children expected to be homeless this Christmas. A rapid
expansion in the prison population in England and Wales over the past 20 years is placing a growing
burden on the taxpayer while reoffending rates have remained extremely high. In 2014 the cost of
holding the increased population at today’s costs was an extra £1.22 billion compares with 20 years
ago - a cost of over £40 per year for every UK taxpayer. This extra funding of prison places is
equivalent to employing an additional 56,000 newly qualified nurses. On 3rd July 2015 the prison
population in England and Wales was 84,930. Between 1993 and 2014 the population increased more
than 40,000 people - a 91% increase. Simply returning to the incarceration rate of the mid 1990’s would
put £1.22 billion back into the public purse - a fraction of that amount re-invested in constructive prison
regimes could transform performance, reducing the number of future victims. We need to make sure
that transatlantic deals such as T.T.I.P. aren’t pursued as these give corporates more power than they
already have. Otherwise, we’re doomed.

8

Creative skills (such as design,
craft, music or theatre) which
can be applied to activism

D

I am rather creative and have a wide range of skills that are applied to activism. Whether it’s digital
projections; painting banners; graphic design; music producing; film editing; writing; poetry or drawing, I
always use the talents I have to inspire others to get involved in activism and apply them to my own
campaigns and others I have worked on. Peaceful creative rebellion is the greatest form of rebellion.
We need to harness the potential of social media and use images; film; apps and other new
technologies such as 3D printing.

I’m a huge fan of social media marketing for non-profits and see this as my forte. We are living in a
world where everyone's interconnected and has the technical capabilities to do just as I do. I want to
use my creative skills and teach others how to utilise their own skill sets which they can they implement
into activism. Whether it’s elderly women who want to knit items for the homeless or privacy bloc masks
or graphic designers projecting 3D images on to a building, if there’s someone out there with a skill
who’s altruistic, I’ll find them and empower them to get involved in activism.

9

10

PERSONAL QUALITIES
1

Commitment to accuracy, efficiency and a
high standard of work

Essential

Desirable

E

I often find that I’m ‘policing’ myself with regards to work standards . I like to adapt a robust work ethic
to my campaigns and believe that the greatest results come from determination, motivation and
attention to detail. I often find myself constantly proof reading my work before it’s published online and
via print. I’m a confident positive social communicator and self-motivated problem solver with diverse
experience. I thrive on innovation, challenges and targets. In three words; adaptable, professional,
creative.

2

A strong commitment to Global Justice Now’s
campaigning aims and democratic structures

I have followed Global Justice’s campaigns for some time now and I seriously commend the work you
guys and girls do there. To be a part of such an organisation would not only be an achievement, but it
will allow me to open so many more doors for positive changes in our society. I have a good network of
people around me and by amalgamating with your organisation, I genuinely think we can utilise the
energy here in the north and direct it towards important issues that we face in order to tackle them. If I
was given the opportunity to get this position, I’d utilise the facilities around me to inspire the masses to
challenge more people in authority in order to create more equal opportunities for the whole of society.

Respect for the organisation’s equal

I have been entirely honest with everyone that I have come into contact with over the past 5 years and I
have a horrendous criminal record from when I was younger. Many of the convictions are acts of injustice
and I’d like the opportunity to show how my past can help organisations like yourselves and other people
in society. I’ve reverse engineered every aspect of my life and am now using my experiences to deter
others from making similar mistakes. Instead I’m now steering people towards activism by directing their
justifiable anger at the people who are oppressing us.

Asylum and Immigration Act 1996

applicants providing evidence of their eligibility to work in the UK at the offer stage.
Please confirm whether you are Yes, I am. I’m a British National.
eligible to work within the UK

Do you have any unspent or pending criminal convictions?

If the answer below is yes, please provide full details in a separate sealed envelope addressed to the
head of resources and marked ‘Confidential’.
The fact that you have a criminal record does not automatically prevent you from being
considered for a job. We will take into account the nature of the offence, when it happened and
if it is relevant to the job. If you are shortlisted, this will be discussed with you at the interview.
Yes / No :

Yes. I don’t mind disclosing this publicly because it’s relevant to my campaigning and
your organisation.

Following the ‘March For The Homeless’ in April which I organised in Manchester, we
attempted to occupy Manchester Town Hall peacefully and several protestors were
assaulted by Greater Manchester Police and G4S. We setup a ‘Homeless Camp’ outside
the town hall and I was told that we’d have a meeting with the council to discuss
intervention. The following morning, I was isolated and arrested for two spurious charges
of assault on G4S staff and possession of ‘an offensive weapon’ which was a pirate flag.
The case is ongoing, I’ve managed to source an extremely good barrister from garden
Court chambers who represents many of the anti-fracking protestors and have CCTV to
corroborate that I haven’t assaulted anyone. My solicitor said that the case “isn’t criminal,
it’s political” and they’re just using it to keep me on bail conditions which states I can’t go
anywhere near Manchester Town Hall. I’m willing to discuss this matter in full detail with
anyone who would like to know more information.
