Design of small Solar Concentrators for Solar Powered Green Buildings
The Work proposed for the NRE fellowship is the design, construction and analysis of mini solar concentrators for solar powered Green Buildings. The study focuses on the design of Solar Photovoltaic System with 110 Wp SPV Panel to produce D.C. power for the domestic applications. The design of Green Buildings can either to pertain to the building architecture or the usage of renewable energy. The building Architecture refers to the roof design to allow sunlight during winter alone, to use civil passive architecture design so as to reduce the incoming heat radiation inside the buildings during summer. The application of renewable energy for buildings can be used to power up LED Lights, heating up of buildings. A Building’s power requirement is analyzed and the possibility of using solar power for the building is studied and designed. Also, the usage of concentrators for the solar panels will be analyzed. The main advantage of using this arrangement is to increase the power output by using the same number of solar panels. A single 110 W panel operating in clear sky conditions with an insolation of 800 W/m2 will give an output of only 90 Watts. This is mainly due to the low Insolation level for the given place. Also, the amount of sunlight reaching the solar cell surface will be low due to factors like reflection of light on the top glass layer, shadowing of the solar panels and so on. Thus, in order to increase the incoming radiation, a concentrator design is used. In the case of using the mini concentrator arrangement, the green building requires less number of panels than the original value which is designed. Thus, the cost of powering the green building is reduced. The concentrator arrangement is designed for geometric 4 X concentration level. The concentrator is supported by using 4 booster mirrors attached to solar panel. The booster mirror setup is either made of glass or well shined aluminium sheets. A silver coating will also be given to the Aluminium sheet to increase its reflectivity. A polymer coating will be given on the top layer of the reflector to protect the system from dust formation and fog. Also, in order to lower the heat produced in PV module due to concentration, the usage of plexi glass coating will be analyzed. This layer will absorb the IR Radiation and will reflect the visible radiation alone. The system has to be attached to a tracker arrangement so as to get maximum power from the setup to the green building. Solar Thermal study will also be done on the model by using pipe cooling technique. This method is a substitute to the usage of plexi glass. The heat produced due to concentration will be removed through forced convection by using a cooling fin model which is attached to the bottom of the panel. A pump attached to the system will aid in the forced convection. This heat conduction rate, transfer rate, flow rate of the fluid and other parameters will be studied in this research The study will be done on a 110 Watt panel. The total cost of this booster mirror concentrator, Silver-polymer layer, for the system and cooling model can be estimated to Rs.50, 000 for the chosen panel. Assuming 6 hours of bright sun conditions, the 110 Watt solar panel without the concentrator arrangement will give a yield of approximately 550 watt hour per day. On using the proposed 4 X concentrator arrangement, the yield and thus the output energy is increased. The payback period of the system is reduced since the net power output of the system is increased. The project can be perfected in design aspects and can be implemented in industrial level for the applications of Green Building Designs. The project will initially be implemented for just testing the quality of the output power. A data logger which is available will be attached to the power output to continuously monitor its performance. Then, suitable loads will be connected to check its load performance. Finally, the setup will be connected to a building’s grid to continuously supply power to the unit.
