***CELEBRATING ONE HUNDRED YEARS***

Fleischmanns First
Highlights of the Fleischmanns First Monthly MeetingApril 11, 2015

Maple Festival Report-Lynne Collins reported that the
Maple Breakfast was very successful; approx. 70 people
attended. Michelle reported that the Maple Bake Off was
well attended and the auction was very lively. There was
a good deal of interest in the Sap House 5K, 12 people
registered in advance. Although the race was cancelled
due to weather, we have a good base for next year. Tshirts are available for purchase. Congratulations to the
2015 Maple Princesses!
Memorial Day event-plans are underway. Renewals of
vendors have been good. New this year will be a return
to the “Out of the Attic” theme, vendor table sharing and
lower table prices. Country Express will play in the
morning and a DJ will be on hand for the afternoon.
Pumpkin Patch-Michelle reported that the DEP has approved the patch to be located behind the Community
Garden.

Memorial Day Street Fair, May 23rd
Come and be part of the biggest event of the year in Fleischmanns,
our annual Memorial Day Street Fair. In the past years, over 40
vendors have participated and lined Main Street with tables selling
wares from crafts, antiques and collectibles to food and ice cream.
This year we are bringing back the “Out of the Attic” theme, lowering our vendor prices per space, and encouraging table sharing.
Please consider a little early spring cleaning and come sell your
nearly new treasures.
The Margaretville hospital mobile unit will be on hand for free
blood pressure and blood “ticker tests’ along with updated new
health information.
This event is also Skene Memorial Library’s biggest fundraiser of
the year, its annual book and plant sale and in conjunction the
Greater Fleischmanns Museum of Memories opens its doors for
their 2015 Summer season.
A food court will be set up in front of the Gazebo. Tables and
chairs will be in place so visitors can take in the all-day entertainment provided by Country Express & Top Dog DJ spinner…

Congratulations to our 2015 Maple Princesses and
Marge Miller and Larry Reilly for performing the
Crowning ceremony!

Fleischmanns First is looking for good condition furniture, artwork, lamps and collectibles for its fund raising table too. Please
call Yvonne Reuter at 254-3030 to discuss your donations.
All our fundraising goes right back into our immediate community!
See you at the Fair!

Fleischmanns Then

Making a Living in Fleischmanns…
For many decades, providing local hotels and restaurants with their food to be prepared for guests was
much more of a local affair than it is today. Although the growth of the ‘locovore’, farm to table, movement is creating renewed interest in locally-sourced food again, regional and national food service companies such as Sysco and Ginsbergs have dominated the market for decades. From the turn of the 20th century, local vendors provided meat, vegetables, and other food products to the many hotels in the Fleischmanns area. This post card, printed in Griffin Corners and postmarked 1909, shows how it was done before the advent of the automobile and truck. In later years, local firms still delivered foodstuffs to the hotels. Roy Todd tells of working summers in the 1960’s for Clausen’s Farm Stand and delivering food to a
number of Fleischmanns hotels, including the St Regis. His route extended as far as Oliverea. The ad is
from the Catskill Mountain News in 1964.

Skene Library to Participate .in
Seed Swap
Skene Memorial Library is participating in
the Delaware Countywide Seed Swap program, beginning in April and running until
the end of May. Those with extra seeds are
encouraged to bring them to the Library,
where they will be filed alphabetically.
Bring in your left over seeds from last year,
or earlier this year. Folks are then encouraged to come and help themselves to some
of the seeds, to discover new flowers and
vegetables for the garden. By sharing with
fellow gardeners, all
will benefit; encouraging people to cultivate their gardens
will help to spruce
up our community.

Maple Fest 2015
Despite the brisk and snowy weather on March 21, the Maple
Pancake Breakfast and Maple Bake Off Café brought more than
100 people to Main Street to eat maple inspired pancakes and
confections.
The Fleischmanns Community Church Maple Pancake Breakfast started serving breakfast at 8am and continued until noon.
Over 80 breakfasts were served throughout the morning.
Congratulations to the Blue Ribbon winners of the Maple Bake Off; Laurie Merwin in the traditional category
for her Maple Pecan Cheese Cake, Beth Caspar for her Maple Walnut Crostata in the Gluten Free category and
Christel Buckholz and Laurie Merwin for their Maple Cream Puffs in the Inter-generational category. The
judges, Devon Mills of Peekamoose, Mike Cioffi of Phoenicia Dinner and Mark Birman of Tennis Everyone,
were so impressed with Aida Perez’s Maple and Pecan Impossible Cake that they awarded her second prize in
the traditional category. Everyone in attendance at the Maple Bake Off had an opportunity to sample all the
entries and select their own favorite for which they could bid at the auction. The event was a Fleischmanns
First fundraiser, the proceeds from which will go to support future events and programs.
Thank you to everyone who volunteered for and participated in these events. A special thanks to La Cabana for
hosting the Maple Bake Off!
