Summer of ‘42 Celebration

August 2010

The Mendocino County Film Office is organizing a special festival weekend, on August 28 and 29, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the filming of the classic coming-of-age movie, Summer of ‘42. The movie’s still photographer Dave Friedman will showcase his photos in a three-week exhibit at the Mendocino Art Center, sign copies of his new 70-page photo book, Summer of ’42 – Then and Now, and attend a special screening of the movie. The film – directed by the late Robert Mulligan – was shot in Mendocino, involving 70’s stars such as Jennifer O’Neill, Gary Grimes and Jerry Houser, as well as hundreds of extras and locally-hired crew members. Movie Screening On Saturday, August 28, the movie will be screened at 8:00 pm in Crown Hall in Mendocino. Doors will open at 7:00 p.m., with a special presentation at 7:30p.m. Mendocino County Wine and Beer and an appearance by one of the movie’s stars is planned for the screening. Tickets will be $10, call 961-6300. On Sunday, August 29, there will be a special guided tour with Dave Friedman for a “Summer of ‘42 Locations Walk” with a map highlighting all the interior and exterior locations used in the movie. Photo Exhibit and Book Signing Details Friedman’s exhibit of still photography from the iconic “Summer of ‘42”, will be August 5 through August 29, in the Mendocino Art Center’s Main Gallery. He will be at the Art Center from 5pm-8pm August 14 for an artist reception and book signing. The book features black and white as well as color photography capturing actual scenes from “Summer of ‘42” and behind-the-scenes shots of the cast The Summer of 42 and crew, as well as some of the sites used in the Then and Now film, both then and now. He found his old production images at the Warner Bros. Archives in Burbank, CA. He said the goal of the book and the exhibit was to select as many of the never before seen photographs as possible, while carefully selecting some of the more widely published images to provide context and to tell the story of the making of the classic movie. “The ‘Summer of ‘42’ was one of the highlights of my long film career,” said Dave Friedman.” It was a Dave Friedman beautifully done film and I was working in an incredible place with wonderful people, both in front and behind the camera. I owe a lot to this film because it was a real springboard for me to launch my very successful career as a Still Photographer.” About Friedman Friedman is the only Still Photographer to be voted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Academy is a professional honorary organization of over 6,500 filmmakers whose achievements have placed them at the top of their craft. Membership is by invitation only. In addition to the “Summer of ‘42,” Dave has served as Still Photographer for a number of well-known films, including “The Hunter,” “Tom Horn,” “Enter the Dragon,” “Grease,” “Rambo,” “Rocky IV,” and many others.

Page 4 • August 2010 CALSTAR is a nonprofit air ambulance company with 10 helicopter bases and 1 airplane base. We staff with Two very experienced critical care registered nurses, and a very experienced pilot. The Ukiah Base (CALSTAR IV) is located at the Ukiah Airport and serves Mendocino and Lake Counties, both via the 911 system and with interfacility transfers from local hospitals to larger specialty hospitals as far away as Santa Rosa, St. Helena, UCSF, UC Davis, and Stanford Medical Center. Air Ambulance transportation can be very expensive, sometimes costing thousands of dollars, depending on the distance flown and the care required. Many health insurance companies do not cover ambulance transportation, or they don’t cover it very well. CALSTAR’s Membership Program was developed many years ago to address the high cost of air ambulance transfers, and to avoid the patient or their family ending up with a huge bill on top of a potentially devastating illness or injury. The way it works is, each family or individual within your group pays the annual fee of membership costs $35.00 per year (yes that’s per year not per month), in return for being a CALSTAR member, if you are flown by CALSTAR or one of our reciprocal partners we will bill your insurance and accept what they pay as payment in full, even if the insurance payment is $0. If you have no insurance as a CALSTAR Member your balance is waived. It only takes 15 members to form a group, so if you are a Mendocino Coast Chamber Members you qualify for this group rate. Call 1-888-207-5433 today.
