Volume 1, Issue 1
Newsletter Date

Happy August to you all! I am very excited to bring you the August issue of Shield Magazine. A lot has happened over the last couple of months. We took a break during June and July due to vacations and summer jobs, but we are back in full force ready to bring you exciting news happening in the law enforcement community. In case you didn’t hear, Wives Behind the Badge, Inc. Celebrated its seventh birthday in July. This organization has come a long way since its start in 2006. It has brought together law enforcement families from across the globe and we are moving forward to reach more families and fulfill our mission on an even broader scale going into year eight. On Facebook, you see a lot of people post about “Thankful Thursday”, well, today, Thursday, August 1st, I am thankful for our new content writer Noelle Butler. Noelle is a member of the WBTB media team and the New Jersey Auxiliary, and most recently has become my right hand here at Shield. She has worked so diligently helping to get this publication finished for this month, and it is an honor to have her at my side.

On a final note, I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to join the support forums at Wives Behind the Badge, Inc. There is a place for everyone and is not just exclusive to wives. Are you the
sibling to an officer, aunt, uncle or parent or other relation? Then FBTB welcomes you with open arms to connect with other family members. Is your child a LEO kid 9-17? We would love to have them connect with other kids in our BLK forms that is a safe and secure place for them to hang out and connect. There is a place within WBTB for every family member. May you have a wonderful August, and we hope that you enjoy reading this issue of Shield Magazine. Melisa Cross Secretary and Editor

27 Miles by Lisbeth Mackall

To most people, a knock on the door means that a child has come over to play, the UPS man has bought you a package, or someone is there to sell you a great deal on a car wash plan. But for families living along the thin blue line of law enforcement, a knock on the door means something else completely. On January 2, 2012, I received the dreaded knock on my door, informing me that my husband, Officer Frank Mackall, had been in a car crash, and had been airlifted to North Memorial Hospital. My arrival at the hospital, with the Chief of Police, was met with Frank’s brothers in blue waiting for me. That night began a vigil, with law enforcement in force, waiting to see if my husband would live. When it appeared he would survive that crash, the thin blue line support continued, through each scary moment, each rejoice, and each step forward. Our family journey through this devastating accident was chronicled on our Caring Bridge page, and through journals that I kept throughout the hospitalization. Today, we have combined all of that information together in a story that rivals the day to day ordeal that we lived through, including the wonderful supportive notes from the Caring Bridge site. After much encouragement from my friends and family, 27 Miles: The Tank’s Journey Home has been published. The goal of this book is to let others walk through our journey, and to understand how our families, both blood and blue, walked us through this storm, so that we could get to the other side, and bring Frank home.

Lisbeth Mackall is the Assistant Director of the Wives Behind the Badge Minnesota Axuiliary and has upcoming book signings, including August 18th in Lake City, MN and September 1st in Outing, MN. To order 27 miles visit Lisbeth’s website, www.lisbethmackall.com or amazon.com.

When I found WBTB, It was January of 2011 and I was relatively new to the LEO life & was just "adjusting" to my first grave yard shift. I was a single mother, working full time , and completely head over heals in love with a man who wore Kevlar under his neatly pressed uniform. I was overwhelmed, honestly a little scared; but, beyond relieved that I had found the love of my life, and willing to support him in every way I could. But I knew I needed a little support for me as well. A Google search changed my life that January night & led me straight to a place I'm not sure how I survived the preceding months with out: Wives Behind The Badge. With welcoming words, I instantly felt a sense of security. Other women who actually understood my new found life, joys and, frustrations. An amazing group of ladies who very quickly welcomed me into a sisterhood. WBTB has a closeness of home for me. I know I will always be able to turn to the forum if I have an issue, a question, need help with an idea, or even just company on a late night. I know that my expressions are safe in the WBTB forums & that my friends will always be there to lend an ear. WBTB has taught me so much in the LEO life that I would not have been able to gain on my own or from a printed page of a book. But the reality of life experiences from those more seasoned than I. I've learned better ways of handling the "I'm not going to make it home in time," call and To the reality of breath holding "I am okay....but...." when the phone rings. The uniqueness of our life requires us the need of similar support to that of the dedication that our LEO's provide for the community that they protect. I love that this not only can be found in WBTB but, that my ladies will understand & be there to stand with me. Submitted by Forums Member: MelZig

Beauty Behind the Badge

Did you know that the key to healthy, blemish-free skin could be in a small jar of moisturizer? And even better news – you don’t have to spend a lot of money to reap the benefits! To prove this theory, I set out on a personal journey to confirm whether my oily, acne-prone skin could look better with this one little change in my daily routine. I started selling Avon in 2012, but refused to recommend products that I hadn’t tried for myself. Last year, Avon started launching several products within their Anew line categorized by age – skincare for women in their 30s, 40s, 50s and 60+. At the ripe ol’ age of 32, I purchased the Anew Rejuvenate day, night and eye creams. I began a routine of washing my face thoroughly, using a natural toner (witch hazel and grain alcohol – it’s AWESOME!...and can be found at CVS), followed by the eye cream and appropriate moisturizer. Within five days, I noticed a big change in the appearance of new acne and with the help of some oil-control lotions, was surprised that my face was no more oily using a moisturizer than it had been before. After several weeks, I truly did start to see a small change in the fine lines around my eyes and my skin was incredibly smooth – just as the product line promised. Avon recently launched a new line – Avon Elements. I was so pleased to see they specialized this line for normal and oily skin-types. I started using this product and again, I’m blown away by the quality for such a low cost. It has been worth the investment – and a small one at that – to see a total transformation in my skin. For more information on Avon skincare lines and other products, to ask questions or to discuss your interest in selling Avon, please email me at [email protected] or visit my website at www.youravon.com/julimccoy. My Dad is a Hero.... Not the kind that wears spandex tights and a bright cape for his uniform,... his uniform has a badge on his chest and a gun on his belt.
My dad has enemies... His enemies don't want to rule the world or be fairest of them all. His enemies are people who have no heart and EVIL. He only has one power... My dad can't fly or control minds, his power is BRAVERY because he leaves every night, unsure if he will ever come back home, to protect strangers.... My dad is a HERO

Blue Line Kids Are Heroes Too!
Austynn is just a regular second grade student whose favorite subjects in school are reading and art. She loves attending dance class, and can’t wait to go to the water park this summer! She aspires to be a veterinarian and admires horses. She even has as a comforter that is covered in majestic horses.

Austynn has a big sister, Bailee, and little brother, Gunner. Her grandfather, Joseph Nicolle, was a state trooper, and she has many uncles and cousins in California who are also police officers like her dad. Her brother Gunner aspires to be a police officer someday too!
On May 20, 2013, Austynn became a hero. Austynn’s father, Officer James Nicolle, El Reno Police Department, taught her “it is good to help people,” and when the tornado in Moore Oklahoma devastated her school, Briarwood Elementary, Austynn sprung into action to help her classmates. She described the day starting with her teacher, Mrs. Jenzen, taking her and her classmates into the bathroom, telling them all to cover their ears and eyes, and pretend a train was coming, while Mrs. Jenzen prayed as loud as she could. Austynn had a brick hit her, and the bathroom door was trapping her and her classmates. After the storm passed, Austynn’s initial reaction was to get up and started pulling her classmates out of the debris.

Austynn was greatful that her big sister Bailee and little brother Gunner were not in an area close to the tornado. Her dad was also at the school to help rescue students and staff after the storm.
Right now, Austynn and her family are staying with her grandparents. It is a tight squeeze with eight people in one house, but she looks forward to being able to have her first very own room when they get a new house.

Austynn—May 20, 2013— immediately after the tornado

Thank you Mom, Brandi Nicolle, for letting WBTB interview your daughter, and thank you Officer Nicolle for your services.

Safety Tips from the National Safety Council
www.nsc.org

Transportation Safety
Whether children walk, ride their bicycle or take the bus to school, it is extremely important that they take proper safety precautions. Here are some tips to make sure your child safely travels to school. Walking to school Review your family’s walking safety rules. Walk on the sidewalk, if one is available. When on a street with no sidewalk, walk facing the traffic. Before you cross the street, stop and look all ways to see if cars are coming. Never dart out in front of a parked car. Practice walking to school with your child. Riding a bicycle to school Make sure your child always wears his helmet when leaving the house. Teach your children the rules of the road they need to know to ride their bicycles. Ride on the right side of the road and in a single file. Come to a complete stop before crossing the street. Riding the bus to school Go to the bus stop with your child to teach them the proper way to get on and off the bus. Make sure your children stand six feet away from the curb. If your child and you need to cross the street in front of the bus, walk on the side of the road until you are at least 12 feet ahead of the bus. You always should be able to see the bus driver, and the bus driver always should be able to see you. School Safety Many school-related injuries are completely preventable. Follow these steps to ensure your child’s safety at school . Preventing backpack-related injuries Chose a backpack for your child carefully. It should have ergonomically designed features to enhance safety and comfort. Don’t overstuff a backpack; it should weigh no more than 10 to 20 percent of your child’s body weight. For example, a child that weighs 60 pounds should carry a backpack no heavier than 12 pounds. Ask your children to use both straps when wearing their backpack to evenly distribute the weight. Preventing playground-related injuries Encourage your child only to use playgrounds with a soft surface. Avoid playgrounds with concrete, grass and dirt surfaces, as they are too hard. Children under the age of four should not use climbing equipment and watch older children when they’re climbing. Do not let your children use monkey bars. They are unsafe and should not be used by children of any age.

A Spotlight on Police Family Health & Wellness
Shelbi Potter, Independent Ambassador with Plexus Worldwide and one of the original members of Wives Behind the Badge (WBTB), has intimate knowledge of the health and wellness challenges that plague law enforcement families due to the intense stress that police work puts on the body and day to day family life. As a result of searching for a solution to combat years and years of poor health conditions and choices in her own police family, Shelbi’s doctor recommended several allnatural quality products through Plexus Worldwide which focuses more on solving the problem and offering ways to use preventative measures rather than treating symptoms like a Band-Aid. The results have been astounding! Shelbi and her LEO husband have lost a combined total of 50+ lbs. in two months without restrictive diets or intense exercise; and within their own family and social circle, they’ve been blessed to share results that issues related to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Fatigue, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), Insomnia, Fibromyalgia, Depression, Candida, willpower over hunger and cravings are ALL under control or have been eliminated since taking Plexus. They feel better than ever and the renewed energy along with the countless positive changes has impacted their quality of life far beyond anything they could have expected. Here’s EVEN BETTER NEWS! Plexus Worldwide’s core beliefs are simple: Be Trustworthy, Be Honest, Be Reliable, and Be Responsible. Shelbi has always felt that Wives Behind the Badge is like home and found comfort within our extended family. As a way to give back and perpetuating the Plexus values by paying it forward, during the month of August 2013, Shelbi has committed to donate 100% of profit to WBTB of every 3-day or 7-day Plexus Slim/Accelerator trial pack purchased by our members and/or their family members. You are invited to visit www.ShelbiPotter.com, join her on facebook at http://facebook.com/PlexusPalooza, or reach out to Shelbi directly at [email protected] for additional information. If you are interested, please be sure you confirm your affiliation to Wives Behind the Badge so that your purchase is credited appropriately.

The Police Wife Life, LLC, is dedicated to the support of Law Enforcement Officers and focused on bringing awareness to the need for the support of our Law Enforcement Officers as well as bringing back the respect for our Officers from the general public. My mission is legislative change through my Bill, “One Strike You’re Out, Protective Measures for Law Enforcement Officers”, which if adopted Nationally would change the sentencing laws to require long term, fully served sentences with no parole options or plea agreements for repeat offenders who assault or attempt to injure an Officer. It would require mandatory life sentences with no parole option for those who murder an Officer, with no option of plea deals for lesser charges (for those states with no death penalty). My goal is to keep repeat offenders off our streets and to instill fear back into the minds of criminals who currently have no regard for the lives of our Officers due to the lack of current consequences from our Government. TPWL is a National online community which offers support to those in Law Enforcement, spouses, family or loved ones. http://www.thepolicewifelife.com
