Pastor’s note…

There was a teacher who was helping one of her kindergarten students put his boots on. He asked for help and she could see why. With her pulling and him pushing, the boots still didn't want to go on. When the second boot was finally on, she had worked up a sweat. She almost whimpered when the little boy said, "Teacher, they're on the wrong feet." She looked, and sure enough, they were. It wasn't any easier pulling the boots off than it was putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as together they worked to get the boots back on -- this time on the right feet. He then announced, "These aren't my boots." She bit her tongue rather than get right in his face and scream, "Why didn't you say so?" like she wanted to. Once again, she struggled to help him pull the illfitting boots off. He then said, "They're my brother's boots. My Mom made me wear them." The teacher didn't know if she should laugh or cry. She mustered up the grace to wrestle the boots on his feet again. She said, "Now, where are your mittens?" He said, "I stuffed them in the toes of my boots." I sympathize with this patient saint. With every morning comes new beginnings and possibilities. I often wonder what God has in store today? But the little frustrations of life have a way of gnawing on our gladness. Little things, like boots on the wrong feet, distract us from a joy promised. I remember one of those days where a few of us sat around the table despairing about the state of our world. Bouncing statistics and examples of what was wrong served only to make us aware of how dark our world can appear. Then, a small child saddles up to our table and holds a large glass of 7-Up between his two little hands and with a smile as big as a Montana sky he proclaims to me, “Look God, I’ve got pop!” All at once everything changed. The entire gloomy discussion turned into a belly laugh. Our attention was now focused on this little child and his confusion about my position at the church and his determination to announce to us his elevation (via 7-Up) to the big leagues. God had entered the world as a little child. And we were surprised by joy. Are you surprised by joy? Do you find joy in the midst of a frustrating and demanding day? Can we give Jesus all that stuff that pulls us into those dark places or will we allow Jesus to bring His promises of joy. Could it be that is why Jesus called us to become like children?
God bless your ministry,

Mike

Worship & Music
By Judy Johnson It is only the first week in July and I’m writing my Tidings article early because I’ll be with my new granddaughter when this goes to print. What a precious baby Evelyn is! I am once again in awe of the miracle of birth and the promises found in Psalm 139/ For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. . .When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. My son is sending me photos of Evy as she is adjusting to her new home and making a special place in their hearts. She is perfect in every way and has already brought so much joy. In our family, she is the first of the next generation. My parents are now great grandparents and the cycle of life goes on.

Thanks to Pastor Rauhut for filling in while Pastor Mike was on vacation. Thanks to Amy Williams for filling in for me. We are blessed with talented people at Zion! Hope you are enjoying the sermon series on the book of Daniel. I went to Mo Ranch in June during the Worship & Music Conference to purchase new music and got a choir anthem called, “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel” by Roger Emerson. It’s a faith statement which says, “Didn’t God deliver Daniel from the lion’s den, Jonah from the belly of the whale, and the Hebrew children from the fiery furnace? Then, why not every man?!” Indeed! We have an Awesome God who is able! Blessing as you enjoy the rest of the summer; stay safe and don’t forget to attend worship. We miss you when you’re gone!

Thank You Quilters You have worked hard making so many quilts for needy people. Then you made one more for Pastor Don! Thank you very much for your generous hearts, hands, and minds. I get to share in using the lovely blue cozy quilt too, which is a good thing. We cherish it and say again, “Thank you, thank you.” God Bless Pastor Don & Barbara

Zion Lutheran Children’s Center
Dear Congregation of Zion Lutheran Church, Greetings from the Children’s Center! In July, we beat the summer heat during Water Play Days on Tuesdays. Children enjoy running through the sprinklers and cooling off with popsicles afterward. John Dennis and his crew got a very nice gate built into the back of our playground, which has helped us to have our water play in the security of our privacy fenced area on the playground. It is nice knowing our children are safe and secure behind the fence when they are playing in the water. Also in July, and throughout the summer, we offer a selection of special projects that children can participate in. In July, we tie dyed our own t-shirts. The children got to pick the colors of ink they liked and helped to dye their shirts. We are currently enrolling for the Fall 2013 semester at the Center. I anticipate having at least one opening in each class (except the nursery), please tell your friends and neighbors to think of us if they are in need of quality, loving care for their little ones this school year. Thank you for all you do to support Zion Lutheran Children’s Center! Sincerely, Stephanie Cash, Executive Director and the Board of Directors: Larry Cattran, Wally Freeman, Gus Schill, Beverly Fischer, Dena Theis, Sue Nelms
