Letter from our President
Howdy! I just spent about an hour trying to find the perfect inspirational quote to start off the year. I failed. Nothing seemed to fit the incredible variety of emotions that come with another beginning of school. For educators, it’s the excitement and reluctance of returning to work. For parents with young children, it is both relief and exhaustion in getting children ready for that first day of school. For many whose children are grown the only noticeable difference might be increased traffic. But for those with students entering college for the first time (or even a second or third time), it is a time of major adjustment. I am asking each of you to welcome new Aggie Moms and encourage them to join our group and experience the common bond that Aggie Moms share. We are active supporters and proud of our Aggies as students and alumni of the best university in Texas! Whoop! We will kick off our year with our annual Howdy potluck dinner on August 31. Please remind all members and invite new Aggie moms to this fun meeting. The food is always incredible and the fellowship is the best. On the agenda we will outline the upcoming year and hear some Aggie brags.

Thanks for your continued support and let’s make it a great year! Gig’em Marie Landry

Invite New Aggie Moms to Join Us
We all should be aware of prospective members to Aggie Moms. As the high school seniors graduate and decide to go to A&M, we need to be heads-up to these new Aggies. We moms all have one thing in common, our Aggies. Visit with the new Aggie Mom about college experiences as an Aggie Mom and get her excited about joining us. A personal invitation from you would be an added touch and show the friendly atmosphere of our club.

Aggie Brags
Zachary K., class of 2004, returned safely from his tour in Iraq flying a Chinook helicopter. He has orders to report to Arizona to be trained to fly Apache helicopters and will be married to Michelle M. on October 4th. 2

SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
The recipients of the 2009/2010 Austin County Aggie Moms Scholarships were as follows: High School Will C. William S.

Chase Ashorn was accepted into the Honor Society of Landscape Architects. Please send any Aggie brags to: Marianne Paulsen, [email protected],.

Margie Ashorn reported 30 student study kits were sold and we have a remaining balance of $37.55. In new business we discussed ideas to raise money for next year’s boutique. Some of the suggestions were cookbook stands, storage and display for the necklace pieces, ornament and t-shirts. A motion was made by Charlene Koehler and seconded by Brenda Farris to have Peggy Koehn to bring a sample of a wagon that her husband made for the club to see and possibly mass produce. The date for the first meeting for the next school year was incorrect in the newsletter – it is Monday, August 31, 2009. Cindy Marek and Natalie Oaks are still looking for more recipes for the cookbook. They would like to send it to the publisher by June 1 so we will have it to begin the 2009-2010 school years. The student door prize was won by Myles M. and the member door prize was won by Pauline Lapham. We had two Aggie Brags – Peggy Koehn announced her daughter, J. is getting married, and Marie announced K. is graduation on May 15, Cum Laude. Peggy Koehn made the motion to adjourn the meeting and Cindy Marek seconded it. Submitted August 5, 2009 Margie Ashorn Secretary

Trivia & History
♦ Texas A&M University is the state's oldest public institution of higher education. The Eleventh Texas Legislature approved a joint resolution on November 1, 1866, accepting the terms of the federal government's Morrill Land-Grant College Act of July 2, 1862, which provided for the donation of public lands in a quantity equal to

30,000 acres for each senator and representative in Congress to a state for the establishment of at least one college "where the leading object shall be, without excluding other scientific and classical studies and including military tactics, to teach such branches of learning as are related to agriculture and the mechanic arts." Although the Morrill LandGrant College Act provided the immediate impetus for the establishment of Texas A&M University, there were earlier and subsequent land grants from the Republic of Texas and the state of Texas that directly affected the development of the school. ♦ Originally the Agricultural & Mechanical College of Texas, A&M was founded in 1876 as a land grant college under the Morrill Act, and was the first state college to operate in Texas. A&M was an all-male military school until after WWII, when veteran students were allowed to return as "nonregs." Women were admitted in the 1960s. ♦ Temple Lea Houston, son of Texas general, president, and state senator Sam Houston, attended A&M College in 1876. ♦ A&M's first known official football game took place in 1894. 12th Man
The tradition of the Twelfth Man was born on the second of January 1922, when an underdog Aggie team was playing Centre College, the nation's top ranked team at the time. As the hard fought game wore on, the Aggies were forced to dig deep into their limited reserves because of injuries. Coach Dana X. Bible remembered that a former squad member, who was playing basketball at the time, was in the press box helping reporters identify players. His name was E. King Gill. Gill was called from the stands, suited up, and stood ready throughout the rest of the game which A&M finally won 22-14. When the game ended, E. King Gill was the only man left standing on the sidelines for the Aggies. Gill later said, "I wish I could say that I went in and ran for the winning touchdown, but I didn't. I simply got ready and waited--just in case I was needed." This gesture was more than enough for the Aggie Team. Although Gill did not play in the game, he had accepted the call to help his team. He came to be known as the “Twelfth Man” because he stood ready for in case the eleven men on the gridiron needed him. That spirit of readiness for service, desire to support, and enthusiasm helped kindle a flame of devotion among the entire student body; a spirit that has grown vigorously throughout the years. The entire student body at A&M is the Twelfth Man, and they stand during the entire game to show their support. The 12th Man is always in the stands waiting to be called upon if needed.

This tradition took on a new look in the 1980s when Coach Jackie Sherrill started the 12th Man Kick-Off Team, composed of regular students through open tryouts. This 12th Man team performed very well and held opponents to one of the lowest yards per return averages in the league. Later, Head Coach R.C. Slocum changed the team to allow only one representative of the 12th Man on the kick-off team. The 12th Man tradition exists also in musical form; the student body sings “The Twelfth Man” after each game in which the Aggies are outscored.
