INTRODUCTION
Employee crimes and workplace violence happen everywhere, from small and medium enterprises (SMEs)
to large corporations. In fact, they remain global problems that bear direct impact in an organization’s
investment and workplace security. In a survey conducted by the National Safe Workplace Institute, the
cost of workplace violence to employers in the United States amounted to more than 4 billion in 1992. 1
Another study revealed that 13% of the 400 surveyed small businesses became victims of crimes
committed by employees and outsiders.
Some factors that may contribute to workplace violence and employee crime include the work
environment, the conditions of work, the way co-workers interact and treat each other, and the lack of
sound hiring practices, such as employee background check. While counseling can be an effective way to
handle a disgruntled employee, it still makes a lot of difference if you know beforehand the potential
behavior of your staff members.
