In brief....

Combined schools jerseys arrive
The Blackall Combined Schools Rugby League team has received a brand new team uniform worth over $1300 thanks to sponsorship from Ian Kinsey. The team has received 20 kits made up of jerseys, short and football socks worth around $60 each. In previous years the team has alternated between wearing jerseys from Blackall State School and St Joseph’s Primary School. The new uniforms are blue and black, with blue chosen as a mutual colour of the schools

and black to link in with local rugby league team, the Blackall Magpies. The new uniforms will be used for the first time this weekend when the team travels to Barcaldine to compete in the Development Cup. St Joseph’s principal Timothy Franzmann said the new uniforms would the combined schools team formal recognition and help to maintain it into the future. “This couldn’t have happened without the generosity and vision of Ian Kinsey,” Mr Franzmann said.

Blackall had another wet weekend with 68.6mm falling between Friday and Sunday and resulted in the cancellation of the rescheduled Blackall races and several other local events and meetings. The wet weather caused the Barcoo River to rise once again, with the SES boat put to good use on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday ferrying people across the swollen waterway which was 0.6m above the Kargoolnah Bridge on Tuesday

afternoon. Of the rainfall, 46.8mm fell last Friday, making it the wettest day in March so far for Blackall, with the total rainfall for the month at 114.2 as of Tuesday afternoon. Tambo also received rain, with 63mm falling on Friday, with another 11.4mm falling from Saturday to Monday. The rain brought Tambo’s monthly rainfall to 240.4mm up until Tuesday afternoon.

Flood relief morning tea
Over $1000 was raised last week by 60s and Better at their St Patrick’s Day morning tea to support flood relief. Money raised will be donated to 60s and Better members in flood affected regions. ....Page 5

Correction: An error in last week’s article on the junior cricket team winning the Commonwealth Bank’s cricket memorabilia competition has come to the attention of the Barcoo Independent. Glenn Harvey was mentioned as the Commonwealth Bank president, when he is actually the junior cricket president. Vicky Cavanagh was also mentioned as a Commonwealth Bank representative. She is actually the agency officer for the Commonwealth Bank. Award winning photographer joins Heartland festival program
A winner of one of the world’s most prestigious advertising awards has been confirmed as photography workshop tutor for the Blackall Heartland Festival in May. Sydney photographer David Aderman, who has Emmy and Cannes Golden Lion awards for Schweppes and Toyota to his credit, will be offering three short sessions on creativity and composition. Aimed at photographers with a good working knowledge of their camera, David will run two hour courses after work on May 30 and 31, and a four hour session incorporating sunset photography on June 2. The three-session package will be offered for $120 and class numbers will be limited so that participants can get maximum benefit from such a skilled tutor. Joining photography on the workshop schedule will be lantern making, song writing and drawing in pencil and pen, once again helping Blackall to live up to its reputation as arts and cultural capital of western Queensland. Every year people from around the state make Blackall’s Living Arts Centre, run by the local Cultural Association, their destination for a few days of fun and creativity. Festival organisers want the public to begin thinking about which workshop they want to attend and start planning for their stay. “Lighting up the West” is the festival theme this year and the workshop to do this at is lantern making with Tamara Kirby. Tamara has been an artist in residence for communities as varied as Iceland and Alice Springs and has planned group events such as kite making and shadow puppetry. The lanterns made at the workshops from May 23-27 will be one of the night time highlights at the Heartland Festival’s Food and Music Fiesta on May 28, where an open air lantern parade will take place. People will be able to drop in to the Arts Centre throughout the week to complete their lantern, featuring the animals of the west as well as our night sky. After the fiesta the lanterns will be displayed around Blackall. Karla Ward is also the contact person for all of these workshops and can be contacted on 4657 6624. A $10 material fee will apply.

Fourteen people attended the workshop on tendering for contracts held in Blackall on March 7. The size of projects announced for the Alpha region and the Western Downs means there may well be a range of new opportunities for businesses in Blackall. It may be possible to run this tendering workshop again later in the year if there is interest. There may be opportunities for companies to collaborate on bidding for contracts. Contact Louise Campbell on 4621 6600, or [email protected]. Thinking of something new for the future? There are workshops on in Blackall on April 7 where the various government programs aimed at assisting businesses plan for the future will be outlined. It may be that some businesses could work together on a new idea. There are two separate sessions covering the same topics, from 6:30- 8:30 am and 9am-12pm, at the Acacia Motel. For more details contact Louise Campbell on 4621 6600, or [email protected]. The possibility of a local grazing research and development group similar to the Birchip Cropping Group, see www.bcg.org.au was floated in the last column. The Council had considered getting someone out to talk about the idea. Is no one interested? Contact the EDO John Hine on [email protected]. The Council agreed on a submission to the Qld Government on the Wild Rivers Scheme at the March 9 meeting. This will be on the Council website shortly. The Commonwealth has just released a discussion paper on a National Freight Strategy. A copy can be provided to anyone interested, contact the EDO John Hine on edo@ btrc.qld.gov.au. People may have noticed the price of diesel going up. It seems oil from Libya is especially good for making diesel. There is a lot of interest in growing certain kinds of algae, which make a kind of fat which can be used for diesel. If you Google ‘diesel and algae’ you get 1,950,000 hits. Exxon, one of the biggest oil companies, announced a $650M research project into this a while ago. You may have hard of the term ‘biodiversity’. It’s not just an issue for graziers. It seems there are now more foxes in the UK in cities than in the countryside! A new office block was being built in London and a fox was found living on the 72nd floor. Presumably it was living off the leftovers from the building workers’ lunches. It was caught and let go in a nearby park.

Rugby league boys wow at Regional Shield
Blackall State School rugby league and netball players travelled to Rockhampton over the weekend to play in the Education Queensland Regional Shield, with the rugby league team taking out second place overall. The team, which included eight Blackall State School students, two Alpha State School students and four Rockhampton students, went through the weekend undefeated before going down narrowly 12-6 to Frenchville State School in the grand final on Sunday. Rugby league coach Peter Ward said the team performed well throughout the competition in challenging conditions. “It was very humid, the second two days it was like playing in a quagmire and you could tell they were tired during that last game,” Peter Ward said. “The team that won were very good,” he said. “There was no shame in being beaten by them,” The netball team also put in a strong effort, winning three games out of seven over the course of the weekend, finally placing 15th in the competition. Netball coach Tina Loveday said the players enjoyed themselves and performed well against teams from much larger schools. “They really played exceptionally well and I’m very proud of them,” Tina said.

Blackall bowls players square up to challenge Quilpie
There were no bowls held in Blackall last Sunday due to wet conditions, with the Aramac games also postponed to a date yet to be fixed. Sixteen Quilpie bowlers are coming to Blackall this weekend for the second annual inter-town challenge. The challenge first took place in 2009, with Quilpie taking out the trophy. Wet conditions prevented the challenge from being played in 2010. The Quilpie players will arrive at 12pm on Saturday for start of play at 2pm with more games on Sunday. All members are asked to give a hand either playing or helping out in any way they can, with spectators welcome.

Blackall State School students were given an important message with community members visiting the school last Friday for the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. Ambulance officer Mark Hancock, Constable Brent Gerber, local business owner Ian Kinsey and Reverend Beth O’Neill attended the morning parade to talk to students about the repercussions of bullying. There was a focus on bystander behaviour throughout the speeches, with students also listening to a Kate Miller-Heidke song “Caught in the Crowd” about the consequences of ignoring bullying. Students wore orange clothing for a gold coin donation, and a sausage sizzle was held later in the morning. Blackall State School searches for heroes
Blackall State School is searching for its heroes, whether they be past students, staff members or community representatives. As part of their celebration of State Education week, Blackall State School is again preparing for its annual “Hero Awards”. The school is calling on community members to nominate individuals or groups who are or have been associated with the school. The school is seeking out those people from its extended community who are role models, whether it be that they have been successful in their studies, excelled in business or the work place and those who have worked tirelessly for the school over many years. “Blackall State School is proud of the achievements of its students, staff and community. We know that our past students are spread across the full gambit of the workforce, from scientists with PhDs, to successful businessman, lawyers, doctors, teachers and tradespeople. These awards allow a vehicle for our current students to understand the excellence that Blackall State School produces, and importantly these ‘heroes’ inspire our students to reach for their own broad horizons,” principal Jason Smith. The hero awards are divided into three categories - the Blackall State School Community Hero, the Blackall State School Past Student Award and the Blackall State School Living Treasure Award. The Blackall State School Community Hero Award is awarded to individuals or groups that have contributed to the education of Blackall State School youth over the past year, including through volunteering, training, coaching, work experience and school based

apprenticeships and traineeships. The Blackall State School Past Student Award is awarded to a past student who has demonstrated success in their studies and or work life, providing inspiration for our current students to reach for broad horizons. The Blackall State School Living Treasure Award is awarded to an individual or group that has consistently, persistently and significantly contributed to the education of Blackall youth. Nomination forms are now available at the Blackall State School and community members are encouraged to nominate individuals. All nominations are strictly confidential. Previous winners have included Megan Prow, Marie Messer, Ross Dagan, Monica Bailey and Ian Kinsey.

It was time to get creative last weekend with animal costume making workshops held at the Blackall Living Arts Centre. Experienced costumier Robyn Adams ran the workshops held on Saturday and Sunday, with a small number of participants attending over the course of the two days. The Inland Costumation workshops were an initiative of Red Ridge (Interior Queensland), a recently formed arts and cultural charitable organisation to further

progress arts and cultural activities across Interior Queensland. Workshops are also being held in Longreach and Barcaldine, with participants making a series of animal character costumes which will then be used in performances by local children at the regional shows in May. This project has received financial assistance from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland with locally sourced products such as poly pipe and dyed wool bales used to

make costumes of various animals including sheep, dogs, foxes and cattle. Robyn Adams said the costumes were designed to be easily transported between different regional shows. “The program aims to be able to get kids involved in making their own stories,” Robyn said. “Part of the reasoning is that there’s not as many animals at the show as there used to be and this is bringing them back in a cute story-telling way.”

Alison Mobbs, Blackall Branch Acting Secretary commented, “I think most women out here identify in some way with the QCWA, whether it be through memories or even just acknowledging the longstanding tradition of the group. It would be great to see the community come out and show how well regarded the QCWA is by supporting this event.” Tickets for the evening are $15 for adults and $5 for children, a light bar will also be in operation. New research by Cancer Council Queensland has found that the gap between prostate cancer survival rates for rural and urban men has widened, as rural men continue to experience lower survival. The study, published in the Medical Journal of Australia, found that rates of radical prostatectomy and prostate specific antigen (PSA) screening were lower among rural men. Cancer Council Queensland’s lead researcher, Associate Professor Peter Baade, said the findings would prompt ongoing research to reduce the disparities in prostate cancer survival. “While incidence rates for prostate cancer in both urban

and rural parts of Australia were similar, the gap in survival rates between rural and urban men has widened, and rural men are less likely to survive a prostate cancer diagnosis,” Mr Baade said. “Notably, men living in regional and rural areas of Australia have been shown to use diagnostic and treatment services less than their urban counterparts, which could in part explain why their survival and mortality outcomes are consistently poorer,” he said Mr Baade said rates of radical prostatectomy and PSA screening were lower among rural men, suggesting that rural men are more likely to be diagnosed after experiencing symptoms,

possibly at late stage of disease, when survival prospects are less favourable. “This study suggests that PSA screening has not had an equivalent impact on the diagnosis of prostate cancer in urban and rural areas, and points to the need for further research into any differences in access to treatment options and follow-up care for men living in regional and rural areas and those living in urban areas,” Mr Baade said. “It is urgent that we further explore the reasons for lower survival among regional and rural men so that we can identify strategies to counter this alarming trend,” he said.

Budding radio actors will get their chance to hone their skills with an event to be held in Blackall at the end of July as part of the Queensland Music Festival. A community meeting was held on Tuesday evening to discuss plans for the upcoming event which will see winning plays from the Miles National Radio Play Competition performed live with live music and professional foley sound effects. Radio Plays producer Louisa Gordon and Ted and Ann Gibbons from the Miles National Radio Play Competition visited Blackall and Tambo to explain the event and start looking for participants. The Radio Plays performance is part of this year’s Queensland Music Festival, a state wide live music festival held every two years. Three plays covering a broad range of genres including comedy, drama and romance will be performed on two nights in the Blackall Cultural Centre by local actors, with the plays also being recorded and possibly broadcast. The performances will feature original music by composers Vanessa Tomlinson and Erik Griswold, performed live by a five piece ensemble, with professional production support from QMF. The Radio Plays team will return in early June to conduct rehearsals with a local cast. Ted Gibbons said radio plays focused on the voices of the actors, rather than any physical performance. “The beauty about radio plays is they’re so easy to put on and don’t cost very much,” Ted said. “You don’t have to memorise anything, all you have to do is read a script into a microphone.”
