Children’s agencies put the ‘fun’ in ‘fund raising’
BY DONNA LUEKE Ottawa County CASA and Joyful Connections hosted the first annual Amazing Island Raise, Put-In-Bay style, on Saturday. 15 teams raced to be the Amazing Raise champion. The teams solved clues and completed challenges “Amazing Race” style. First place finishers were the FUNraisers team of Chris Galvin, Marcia Jess, Joy Roth and Mary Coffee, who finished seconds ahead of the second place team from  Shrock’s Marina of  Emily Dunfee, Erin Sondvick, Melissa Bonning, Sidsel Halblaub, Brenda Smith and Meggin Weimerskirch. The last place team was E-Raisers:  Carol Gloer, Gary Gloer, Cath Hoogerhyde and Jeff Hoogerhyde.  The winner of the Trivia Challenge was Stealth R Us:  Diane Kurfis, Cheryl Stough, Melissa Malinowski, Alicia Jester and Heather Post. The overall winners were the children served by the two agencies. $4000 was raised by the Raise. The event began at Catawba Inn, where teams gathered, shirted up and received directives. Once aboard the Miller Ferry, they were given a trivia quiz about Put-in-Bay and the sponsoring agencies. Upon arriving on the island, teams secured transportation and had a hula-hoop passing challenge. Then the Raise began in earnest, with teams scattering around the island, finding clues and solving challenges that included singing Irish tunes at Hooligan’s, giving presentations at Perry’s Victory Monument and Visitor’s Center and passing a grape at the winery. When the challenges were completed, all enjoyed pizza and beverages and the rest of the day on the island. As the racers interacted with Put-in-Bay visitors and businesses, they were often asked about their sponsors. Preprinted cards explained the Raise and told about the agencies. Connie Cornett, Executive Director of CASA, and Sheila Powell, Fiscal Operations Manager of Joyful Connections organized the event. Said Cornett: “It was a lot of fun and some people learned about CASA and Joyful Connections. A big thanks to sponsors, racers, businesses and all the people who made it a good day.” Several participants commented on what an ambitious undertaking the Raise was. “There were some detours and blips, things we will figure out for next year,” said Cornett. “We have no date set yet, but there are already some exciting plans for next year’s The FUNraisers, first place finishers, left to right: Joy Roth, Chris Galvin, Marcia Jess, Mary Coffee challenges.” Joyful Connections is a supervised visitation and exchange center in Oak Harbor that provides a healthy, safe and homelike environment where children can interact with family members. To volunteer or contribute to Joyful Connections, located at 8200 West State Route 163, Oak Harbor, phone 567-262-3181 or visit www. joyfulconnections.com. Ottawa County CASA volunteers are appointed by the court to advocate for abused and neglected children. Friends Plaza at Ida Rupp dedicated
The Friends Plaza at Ida Rupp Public Library was dedicated on Tuesday evening. The plaza was made possible by the Friends of the Library. The Phil Wammes Trio from Terra State played for the event. Masonry Construction did the work on the statue. The flower pots are from Mary’s Blossom Shop, and along with the benches and the statue are coordinated to match others in historic downtown Port Clinton.

Tell Tales

The first week of summer
I received a phone call last week from Vietnam era veteran Ted Petersen of Port Clinton. He informed me that there was one more Port Clinton name that was not listed who is on the Moving Wall that is the Vietnam Memorial. His name is Lance Kohanke, who would have graduated from PC in 1965 but moved away a year before graduation when his family was forced to transfer following the closing of the Erie Army Depot. His sister Debbie was in my graduating class, but moved away after her freshman year also. nnn Tonight is the special Wine Tasting Kickoff Party for this weekend’s Catawba/Marblehead Parade of Homes. It will be held at Mon Ami tonight starting at 5:30 p.m. The entire event is a fundraiser for the Salvation Army’s Ottawa County service unit. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at The Beacon or at Salvation Army in the Sutton Center, or just buy them at the door. The Parade itself will be this Saturday and Sunday. We have spent over $10,000 to advertise the event from
n

Columbus to Cleveland to Toledo. The dream of owning a “Place at the Lake” can become a reality and the friendly participants will be happy to show you how! nnn Our “Find Wylie” winner this week is Terri Tooman of Oak Harbor who was one of 111 individuals who found our friendly fish hiding in the ad for Catawba Bay on page 8C in last week’s Beacon. Terri wins our weekly $20 gift card from Friendship Food Stores. We’ll definitely be hiding Wylie again this week. If you find him, drop

off an entry form at our office in the Beacon Place Business Center or click on the Find Wylie Icon at our website, www.thebeacon.net. nnn Congratulations to Tina Burris who was president of Port Clinton Kiwanis in 20112012. She received special recognition at last week’s Kiwanis meeting since the local club received “Distinguished Club” status with Kiwanis International. Tina in turn

Don’t wait.

DEFINITION: Sauvignon Blanc originated in the Loire Valley of France. However, New Zealand has taken this grape to new heights in the cool Marlborough region, producing racy wines with tropical fruit and gooseberry flavors. Sauvignon Blanc is usually a dry white wine with distinctive herbaceous qualities. This wine is widely available as a single varietal or as a blend with Semillon. FLAVOR PROFILE: Typical a light

From herbal taste sensations to veggie, and flavors of grass, hay and mineral tones to a citrus and tropical flavor mix, Sauvignon Blanc displays a very unique wine tasting adventure. FOOD PAIRING: Sauvignon Blanc is a very food-friendly wine and terrific for appetizers such as artichoke dip, veggie dishes or dips, garlic or Italian seasonings in creamy sauces, fragrant salads — like Greek, Caesar or Garden, Thai food, fish (sushi), poultry and the list goes on.

LESI Welcome Center is ten years old
On Thursday Lake Erie Shores and Islands Welcome Center in Port Clinton celebrated their tenth anniversary in grand style. Executive Director Larry Fletcher and his staff welcomed local dignitaries and visitors with fine food and beverages, cello music, presentations, and, of course, an anniversary cake. Ottawa County Commissioner Jim Sass offered his congratulations on the Welcome Center’s success, saying, “It is all because of the people that work here. Keep up the good work. We need the taxes.” His comments were echoed by Pat Barker, Interim Director of the Ohio Office of Tourism, who reminded those gathered of the importance of the $40 billion tourism industry to the state of Ohio. Marblehead man to be ordained
On Saturday, June 22, at 11 a.m., Bishop Leonard P. Blair will ordain four men to the priesthood of the Diocese of Toledo at Our Lady Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral at 2535 Collingwood Boulevard. One of those ordained is Deacon Jeremy Miller, 28, whose home parish is Marblehead St. Joseph. Miller is a graduate of St. Mary Central Catholic High School in Sandusky, has a Bachelor’s in Philosophy from Xavier University in Cincinnati and a Master’s of Divinity from Mount Saint Mary Seminary of the West in Cincinnati. Deacon Miller served his Pastoral Internship Year at Findlay St. Michael the Archangel and summer assignments at Perrysburg St. Rose and Findlay St. Michael. He quotes Pope John Paul II “The world looks to the priest, because it looks to Jesus! No one can see Christ; but everyone sees the priest, and through him they wish to catch a glimpse of the Lord!” He follows this by saying “If I am privileged to be called to this noble vocation, may I respond generously and faithfully.” Once ordained Deacon Miller will celebrate a special weekend Mass of Thanksgiving on Sunday, June 23, at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph, Marblehead.

If you have questions regarding cemetery rules or the removal of decorations, potted plants, or plantings please call the township at 419-797-4131. Perry’s Victory 1812 dress making rescheduled
Perry’s Victory 1812 dress making workshop canceled for June 15-16, will continue for June 29-30. Consultation and custom ordering with historic dress makers will follow same schedule Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial has canceled the two day “War of 1812 Dress Making Workshop” scheduled for the weekend of June 15-16 due to lack of registration. The workshop will continue for the weekend of June 29-30. Those who participate in the June 29-30 workshop will have the chance to collaborate with historical fashion experts Cathy Taylor and Steve Pontious in order to create their dream 1812 garment. The workshop will be held at Put-in-Bay Town Hall 9 a.m.–4 p.m. During the workshop Taylor and Pontious will step you through the process of creating a unique and personalized frock from start to finish with tips to achieve authenticity and information about the style of the time, most notable for the ubiquitously preferred empire waist line. All you need to participate in the free workshop is a basic understanding of garment construction and the supplies for creating your dress. Necessary supplies include; pins, needles, pens/pencils, tissue paper (for tracing), 5 3/8” buttons (plain silver or bronze look), scissors, scotch tape, measuring tape, fabric and matching thread. The fabric should be a solid cotton, linen, muslin or cotton linen blend. Those making size 8 – 14 dresses will require 3 ¼ yds of 45” wide fabric or 2 ½ yds of 60” wide fabric for short sleeves or 3 ¾ yds of 45” wide or 2 ⅜ yds of 60” wide fabric for long sleeves. Those making size 16 – 18 dresses will need 3 ⅜ yds of 45” wide fabric or 2 ¾ yds of 60” wide fabric for short sleeves or 4 yds of 45” wide fabric or 3 ¼ yds of 60” wide fabric for long sleeves. Bringing a sewing machine is strongly encouraged as it will allow for you to complete the major portion of the dress within the two days. Workshop seating is limited and registration is required. There are already several participants registered for spaces in the 29-30th weekend event. Secure your position by contacting Trudy Roth at 419285-2184 or via email at trudy_roth@nps. gov. For those wishing to dress the part at upcoming bicentennial events but who don’t want to make their own garments, experienced seamstresses will be available during the workshops to take custom dress orders. Preregistration is not required for seamstress consultations. For complete details on this workshop visit www.nps.gov/pevi or call 419-285-2184.

Huge weights dominate Cabelas National Walleye Tour in Port Clinton
BY JULIA DAVIS AND DONNA LUEKE Friday, June 14, was to be the first day of the Cabela’s National Walleye Tour in Port Clinton, but day one was cancelled due to a small craft advisory issued that morning. The 260 Professional Anglers and CoAnglers from across the country fished in more enjoyable conditions Saturday. Fishing was cancelled again on Sunday, but there were many happy anglers at the 10 a.m. Father’s Day awards ceremony. Huge weights dominated the stage Saturday, where often times the five fish limit was too big for the scales. They used two large fish bags to divide them. Then both bags were weighed separately and added together for a final weight that both the Pro and the Co-Angler share. Leading at the end of Saturday, and ultimately the tournament winner, with his personal best total was Pro Angler John Gillman. Gillman, along with Co Angler Joe Jordan, had a weight of 51.7 pounds for their five fish total. When asked how it felt to be sitting in the number one spot after day one, Gillman said, “It’s good, obviously. Having a 4 pound lead, it’s great. You know what I mean? That’s a nice cushion here. It’s fun! The Great Lakes are what I love to do. I love to troll. And, I’m due”, he laughed. “I’ve gone too many years of not winning”, he said, shaking his head. When asked how many years he had tournament fished, Gillman said, “I’ve been fishing 12 years now. I started with the MWT (Michigan Walleye Tour). Then I fished the PWT (In Fisherman’s Professional Walleye Trail), and then, obviously, the FLW (FLW Walleye Tour). And now I am fishing the Cabelas’ National Walleye Tour (NWT).” When timidly asked what he was doing to catch his fish (because it’s typical of a Pro to save that information until the tournament is over) surprisingly Gllman was willing to share what he knew: “Believe it or not, I’m pulling Reef Runners, and I hate pulling Reef Runners. They’re great baits, but I’m just not good at them. It was just unbelievable”, he says shrugging his shoulders and grinning widely, remembering. At the very end of the day I did switch to spinners, because it laid flat and I moved off the structure a little more. I caught a 28 and a 30 and another 28, and I just told Joe, ‘I cannot catch anything more than this. Unless I catch a 12 pounder, and that’s like winning the lotto.’ I just said, That weight is so big, we’re out of here.’ ” When asked how fast he was pulling his Reef Runners, he said, “It’s really, really, really weird. There’s a lot of current in the Great Lakes, depending on where you’re at, and down there, I never experienced current like that in my life. One direction I was pulling at 0.4-.0.5 mph and the other I was going 1.7 mph. There’s a difference in the current. You watch that bait in the water, and you see how it reacts to the current, then you’ll know that’s the speed you need to be going, and I adjusted accordingly. Because I knew going with the current, that I would need to adjust my speed to make the action of my baits work the way they’re supposed to. I also had to change my leads to get into the zone where the fish are.” As with many of the Pros, it was Gillman’s first trip to Port Clinton. “I am definitely coming back,” he said. Only four pounds behind Gillman was Pro Chris Gilman and his Co-Angler Cody Lubeley, with a five fish limit of 47.54 pounds. In the number three position was Perry Good and his Co-Angler Dan Kraft, with another heavy weight of 47.16 pounds. Perry echoed what many anglers found: “The pre-fishing was great. The hard thing (on tournament day) was deciding where to go.” The teams fished the western basin as far east as Avon, as far north as Pelee. Another angler said that he had never thrown back so many seven and eight pound fish. The NPAA (National Professional Angler’s Association) held a Children’s Clinic after Saturday’s weigh in where rods, reels, and t-shirts donated by Cabela’s and other sponsors were handed out to the attending kids and their families. For full results go to www.nationalwalleyetour.com/tournaments/results. The Port Clinton tournament will be televised on NBC Sports network and other networks later this year.

“Return of the Mayfly” to be held at Perry’s Victory
On Saturday, June 22nd, at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial on Put-in-Bay, the National Park Service site is hosting its 5th annual “Return of the Mayfly” festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. “ ‘Return of the Mayfly’ is a free event that gives adults and children the opportunity to learn about the mayfly and its role in his ecologically unique home…Lake Erie,” said Memorial Superintendent Blanca Stransky. Events and activities will focus on the Lake Erie ecosystem and some of our favorite critters. “Our annual Mayfly Fest honors those pesky insects we all love to hate. Yet mayflies play such an important role in the local ecology and in determining the health of Lake Erie that they deserve our respect and understanding,” Stransky added. This year’s activities will again include a variety of fun science based activities. Visitors will have the opportunity to study mayflies with some student volunteers using viewing scopes provided by Ohio State University Stone Laboratory. Children may participate in the ever popular “Build-A-Bug” and “Bug Mask” crafts. Ichthyology and Invasive Species Ranger Programs and will provide kids with the opportunity to see and understand some interesting plant and animal species, with help of volunteers from the Lake Erie Islands chapter of the Black Swamp Conservancy. Plus, some of the park rangers will help children discover the effects of pollution using hands-on water quality testing. For more information, call Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial at 419-285-2184 or visit www.nps. gov/pevi.

Dust off your wings and shine up your tap shoes, because the theme of the Thursday, June 27, Art Walk from 5-8 p.m. in Historic Downtown Port Clinton is Dance of the Mayflies.  Dance teachers Carol Clemons and Toni Garrett will give attendees the opportunity to experience some creative dance interpretive movements with a few mayfly touches.  Dancing will commence at 5, 6 and 7 p.m. at Veteran’s Park, Monroe and East 2nd Streets.  Visitors are welcomed at any one of these times to dance for about 30 minutes. The Art Walk, sponsored by the Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council, is free and family friendly.  Businesses will be open and local artists will be demonstrating and selling their original art throughout the historic downtown area, including at the Ida Rupp Library. All are welcome to Port Clinton’s Art Walk where dreams “may fly.” For more information contact Jen Nickel, 419-341-0804.

Captain Juls’ Fishing Report

Rise of the Mayfly

BY CAPTAIN JULIA DAVIS This past week I watched as the clouds of Mayflies rose from the bottom of Lake Erie to the surface of the water on my boat’s sonar. On Sunday morning they were in the 10 foot range of the water column, and by Monday night they were covering the sides of shoreline homes and boats sitting in the marinas in a thick blanket of wings and curved up tails. I have been told that, believe it or not, the Doppler radar system used by the National Weather Service picked up an emerging group of Mayflies on Lake Erie one year. Can you imagine how big that must have been? Immature Mayflies are called “naiads”, and can spend up to a year in the bottom of the lake bed feeding on algae and diatoms. Once they rise to the surface and shed their outer skin, they fly into the air and spend the next 30 minutes to 24 hours trying to mate with another Mayfly before succumbing to their inevitable death. Most of the population will hatch at the same time over a day or two

in the spring and fall. But since there are many different species of fly, it may seem as though they are hatching all summer long. While the presence of this harmless little creature reveals a healthy ecosystem, they do tend to make things very messy in town, and it also makes the walleye fishing a little tougher. Walleye love to gorge themselves on the rising clouds of Mayflies, because it’s an easy meal, which in turn makes trying to get a walleye to bite your lure/bait almost impossible. I’m often asked, “What can I do to catch fish when the hatch is happening?” And, my answer is always the same: “Wait for it to be over, or go to an area that isn’t having a hatch right now.” There really isn’t anything you can do that I know of that will out-produce Mother Nature. Captain Juls can be contacted by email at rngrgal@gmail. com, or by phone at 419-835-7347. Her website address is www.julswalleyefishingadventures.com.

Ragbag Report

Training the next generation of blowboaters
BY JOHN SCHAFFNER One of the best things local clubs like Sandusky Sailing Club and Port Clinton Yacht Club do is train young people how to sail and teach them the nuances of sailboat racing. This Saturday the Sandusky Sailing Club is hosting their Junior Regatta. Close to 100 young men and women will descend upon SSC for the event. Their instructors do an excellent job of not only teaching the basics of sailing, but also the basics of boating safety on the water. It is a learning experience that lasts a lifetime. ----It’s a dirty job but somebody has to do it! I am certain you have heard that time worn phrase before. However, it definitely applies to sailing. That is because every auxiliary boat has that wondrous part of the hull structure known as “the bilge”. The reason I bring it up is because one of my crew members, my bow man Tim Willford, and I were taking a look at the structure at the base of the mast of our S2 9.1 last Saturday. Located just aft of the mast step is the bilge. It was nasty. There was a little water down there, since the float on the automatic bilge pump was not being pushed up and pumped out. So we looked at it as an opportunity to do a little cleaning…certainly not the most pleasant task, but a definite responsibility of owning a boat. While down there (actually Tim did most of the nasty cleaning work), we got to talking about other methods of keeping the cabin of your boat smelling nice. Tim told me that when his old boat was at dock, they installed a small dehumidifier down below. When traveling to other locations, he suggested a pan of kitty litter to help absorb the moisture to avoid mold buildup and keep the inside aromas under control. Neat idea! ----They had a couple of races at Catawba Island Club on Saturday. Congratulations to Mark Sprenger on “Thin Ice” for a couple of victories there. Mark keeps his boat at Port Clinton Yacht Club but is also a member at CIC. ----The next big event on the sailing calendar is the Sandusky Island Race/Stein Hospice Cup event out of Sandusky Sailing Club. This is one of my favorites because of the course, a 36 mile figure 8 course that takes the fleet around Kelleys Island, around South Bass Island, Around Middle Bass Island and back to Sandusky. It is a beautiful trip and a fun race, as SSC has entertainment and a great meal on Friday night during registration. See you out on Lake Erie.

The Big Nut’s OSU Scholarship Common Grounds evolves Fundraisers
BY DONNA LUEKE Last week Common Grounds at the Sutton Center in Port Clinton had a soft opening, continuing its organic evolution. The word has already spread that it is a special place for coffee, breakfast and lunch. The coordinator of the evolution of Common Grounds is Brenda Smith, Executive Director of Riverview Industries Inc. (RVI) of Oak Harbor. RVI’s purpose is “to provide a meaningful work experience and quality of life for the benefit of adults with developmental disabilities.” Five Riverview clients are learning and working at Common Grounds. Smith found out about the availability of the coffee shop shortly after RVI had established their goal for the year. The goal, “to bring the community into RVI and to bring RVI into the community” is being realized in Common Grounds, which already had an ideal name for such a venture. “Chef Cesare (Cesare Avallone, Executive Chef and owner of Sandusky’s Zinc Brasserie and Crush Wine Bar) has been an immense help. I just called him and he met with me. He wants to see us succeed. Likewise Rita Killian, a designer referred by Doug and Toni Garrett, has helped pull it all together,” said Smith. “Pastor Kurt Burows of Resurrection Lutheran on Catawba did a blessing. We have the help of a lot of really talented professional people.” Lynn James, a professional barista, is the manager. Dave Burows is in charge of catering. The art is from RVI’s Imagine Art project. “We are still nailing down the quality and the service,” said Smith. But mostly, she has been humbled by the way things have worked, “the serendipity” of the bringing of the community and resources together. Common Grounds is at 1848 E. Perry Street, Port Clinton. It is open seven days a week. Hours are Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m.-1 p.m. For more information, call 419-732-3777, email [email protected] or visit www.commongroundspc.com. Lakeside Chautauqua,Tree City USA
Lakeside Chautauqua was recognized as a Tree City USA at the Northwest Ohio Awards Ceremony on April 18. This is the second year that Lakeside Chautauqua has been honored with this nationally recognized award. The awards were presented by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry at the Hope United Methodist Church in Whitehouse, Ohio. Bill Smith and Frank O’Dell from the Lakeside Tree Advisory Team represented the Lakeside Chautauqua community at the presentation of the award. The title of ‘Tree City USA’ was bestowed upon the community for its ongoing efforts to maintain and improve the quality of life through a comprehensive street and park tree management program. The program is guided by the Tree Commission and the municipal government. The ODNR Division of Forestry acts as a guiding hand in helping a community to become qualified as a Tree City USA. The Urban Forester recommends a community to the Arbor Day Foundation for this standing. In order to achieve the title and the honors, a community must meet four standards. These standards include a Tree Ordinance, an active Tree Commission or forestry department, a comprehensive urban forestry program supported by a minimum of $2 per capita and an annual Arbor Day proclamation and activity. Communities that earn Tree City USA recognition have taken the time to meet the four standards and know that trees: 1.) promote healthier communities by filtering the air by removing dust and other particles 2.) moderate climate, conserve water and provide a vital habitat for wildlife 3.) reduce the heat island effect in urban areas caused by pavement and buildings 4.) reduce energy use and increase property values The state of Ohio currently boasts the greatest number of Tree Cities in the country, with 235 this year. This marks Ohio’s 32nd year as the top Tree City USA state. Fifty-three of Northwest Ohio’s communities are Tree Cities and Ohio Northern University is a Tree Campus USA. For more information about the Tree City USA program or the Arbor Day Foundation, visit www.arborday.org.

The event will take place at Mulberry Creek, 3312 Bogart Road, Huron, on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year’s Fair features the culture and traditions of India. Over 60 vendors, workshops and demos will be featured throughout the weekend, along with an artesian bakery, catered Indian and American food and beverages. They continue on their mission to change the world, one child and one community at a time. Carl Koebel reports that there was not so much trash to pick up, an indication that people are being more conscientious regarding littering and that “Russ does a good job picking up littler along that roadway as he sees it.” Kiwanis extends a special thank you to Port Clinton Glass for letting the Kiwanis crew use their parking lot.
