Laura Sass

Father and daughter Sass hike the Appalachian Trail
Ottawa County Commissioner Jim Sass and his daughter Laura Sass, a high school science teacher at Garraway Schools in Sugar Creek, hiked 15 miles of the Appalachian Trail in west central Virginia on July 25-27. Jim had never backpacked before. Laura had backpacked while living in Idaho. Along the way Jim and Laura met a hiker who was walking the entire 2100 miles of the Trail, from Georgia to Maine. The first night they also had a close encounter with a curious bear, 10 feet from their tent. Jim reports that the three days and 2 nights up and down the mountains were very physically demanding. “Sometimes the trail was just rocks to climb over,” said Jim.”It was a great experience.”

Harvard professor Putnam brings attention to the plight of Port Clinton and the country
BY DONNA LUEKE On July 10 Port Clinton High graduate (class of 1959, member of the Port Clinton Academic Hall of Fame, sociologist, Harvard professor and author Robert Putnam was awarded the National Medal of Honor at ceremonies in Washington, DC. Among his fellow honorees were filmmaker George Lucas and Sports writer Frank DeFord. On August 3 Putnam’s article entitled “Crumbling American Dreams” appeared in the New York Times Opinionator. The article has gone viral, especially in Ottawa County, and is spurring a national debate on issues of substance. Using the example of Port Clinton, Putnam details the decline of a sense of community and its results. His landmark book “Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community”, written in 2001 and featuring Port Clinton’s Star Lanes, began the discussion that is continued in the Aug. 3 article. Just as in the election of 2012, residents of Port Clinton and Ottawa County find themselves at the center of a national debate. The community has been presented an opportunity to use this visibility to be a part of the complex discussion and innovative changes that will be required. “Don’t Give up the Ship” flags that are flying around the area in honor of the bicentennial of Perry’s Victory in the War of 1812 speak to the spirit of resilience and motivation that can help right the ship of the city, state and nation. Putnam’s article is available at http://opinionator.blogs. nytimes.com/2013/08/03/crumbling-american-dreams.

Tell Tales

Thoughts on Putnam’s article
Wow…the online article that Bob Putnam wrote has caused quite a stir! Bob is, as many of you know, Dean of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, a PCHS grad and a member of the Port Clinton High School Academic Hall of Fame. My family moved to Catawba in 1962, so I am now officially a 50 year native. I would rather he not use the rubble at the old Middle School as a graphic, since that rubble marks a major improvement in local school facilities. He also failed to mention one of the biggest economic events in the history of our area, the closing of the Erie Army Depot in the mid 1960s, that cost well over 1,000 jobs. I think it ironic that his article appeared in The New York Times five days before Mike Rose is scheduled to give his presentation at the Elks Lodge on his plan for Waterworks Park. For years, downtowns across the country have stopped being retail centers. They are now financial centers as well as dining and entertainment centers. He talks about the loss of manufacturing jobs in Ottawa County, and it is very true. Other economic opportunities have sprung up to replace those jobs, but haven’t quite been able to do it. I’m talking about skilled trade jobs (marinas) and construction/building trade jobs. The increase in single-parent households is certainly not exclusive to
n

Port Clinton. There have been many individuals who have come to Port Clinton seeking opportunity, entrepreneurs, developers and the like. They have made their fortune by working hard and responding to the changes in the marketplace that Putnam described. We have written about “job skills deficit” in The Beacon, but the incentive to work or to get training in the new local job market appears lacking in our community. Yes, very sad. I will be interested to learn what Mr. Rose has to say tonight. How about we take the park aspects of Waterworks Park and move them to the block now empty since the demolition of the old Middle School? Develop the
n

waterfront, centralize the park. Keep the access to the waterfront for local residents.

Thank you from the Mackey family
The family of Jacob H. Mackey wishes to thank Catawba Island EMS, Magruder Hospital Staff, Dr. Carl Steele, Neidecker, Leveck and Crosser Funeral Home and Port Clinton Elks Lodge 1718 for their help in our time of need. We also thank all who sent cards, flowers, prayers, food and kind words. God bless! Carolyn Mackey and family is going to come here as long as there are those who work to turn them away. It is again time for City Council and the Mayor to move forward and show our town that we need growth and there are ways to protect the waterfront for those who enjoy it. We need jobs and the businesses downtown need shoppers. Look at what Huron River Basin has done. Even a boardwalk and a marina would be a start. But let’s do something! I hope the marshlands get a new look and have been assured that this is going to happen. Don’t forget, citizens, we turned away a 3M dollar improvement to Waterworks Park by our own Jet Express for new trees, ball fields, park equipment, etc., so that they could lease our Waterworks building and the city turned them away and they moved. Let’s learn from the past and get involved with new development. It may be our last chance. Sincerely, Dr. Thomas M. Brown, Former Mayor of Port Clinton

Waterworks Park
Have you notice the Save the Park signs throughout town? Well, it is another attempt to prevent economic growth on the waterfront. Will Port Clinton make the same mistake twice? What was wrong with a 1,000 new jobs at $25 to $40 an hour, a new transient marina and a water park for our young people? We are mowing grass at Waterworks Park at $4000 a square foot. Is this the way we develop the downtown and the waterfront? I think not. No developer

Wow, What a Chardonnay!
Winemaker Notes
The Hey Mambo 2009 Chardonnay is the epitome of a big, bold, and luscious California Chardonnay. Aromas of rich toasted oak, Madagascar Vanilla, ripe papaya and tropical blooms on a hot summer evening engulf the senses. The palate is full and round with soft oak tannins and an attractive yeasty creaminess reminiscent of baked bread and fresh French butter cream. The finish is balanced yet lingering, leaving you with a hint of Pineapple and citrus ambrosia zing. Enjoy this bold and big-flavored Chardonnay with a zesty Pasta Putanesca, or a creamy mushroom risotto. Or pair with vanilla custard smothered with Amerena Italian Cherries in Liquor, a true crowd pleaser!

The Legacy of Lenny Thom
On Tuesday, two of the legacies of Lenny Thom met for the first time. Mary Ellen Frawley, 81, formerly of Sandusky and now of North Olmsted, was just 14 years old when her big brother Lenny died in a car-train accident. Sandusky-born and OSU-educated Ensign Lenny Thom had been Executive Officer and unsung hero on Jack Kennedy’s PT109 in World War II. The story of Thom and the PT boat that is being restored and dedicated to his honor was featured in last week’s Beacon and is available on www.thebeacon.net. Liberty Aviation Museum’s Jeff Sondles arranged for Frawley to see the boat that is to be christened “Thomcat” in honor of the PT boat Thom captained after the famous PT 109 accident that happened 70 years ago this week . “You mean the one(PT boat) my brother was on was this big?” asked the amazed Frawley. “Actually Lenny’s boat was even 8 feet longer,” explained Sondles. Lenny was the oldest of eight children of a divorced mother. Mary Ellen was the third youngest. Lenny, as the oldest, “kind of took over”, according to Frawley, “taking care of the family as much as he could even from a distance when he was in the service. We had a special bond, since he was my godfather.” “I have some of his most wonderful letters. I cherish them. He was great at writing. When he came home, I really looked forward to it. I always wanted to be like him. He would help anyone and give of himself. He would hitchhike home from OSU to Sandusky, so after that he always made it a point to pick up hitchhikers.” Frawley remembered her big brother as being “very handsome, very intelligent, very loving and giving. Anybody that was lucky enough to be touched by him was fortunate. It was a big shock to family (to lose him). We were all devastated.” Lenny Thom’s legacy lives on brightly in his vibrant baby sister Mary Ellen Frawley. His legacy lives on at the Liberty Aviation Museum in Port Clinton. Frawley has donated several of Thom’s items for display there. Thom’s legacy lives on through his widow Cathryn and his son Lenny Jr., an attorney in Alaska. Frawley says they all stay in touch by email. Thom’s legacy lives on at Sandusky High School, where he is a member of the Sandusky High School Hall of Fame and where the Ensign Leonard J. Thom Scholarship fund was established in his honor. His legacy lives on in Thom’s biography “Unsung Hero” by Michael Bell, and in the movie “PT 109”, though sister Mary Ellen says she was disappointed in the actor’s portrayal of Lenny in the movie. His legacy now will live on in “Thomcat”. Frawley and others in the family “were very excited and thrilled when we found out about the boat.” After meeting “Thomcat” in person, she is even more so. “Lenny would have been proud of this boat and his little sister, “said Frawley. “Thomcat” is scheduled to have her engines installed on Aug. 12, according to her captain Frank Nenodovich. She may be in the water for sea trials in September.

OCDJFS supports PC Kiwanis assists library book sale thousands of children with Child Support division
The Child Support division of the Ottawa County Department of Job and Family Services has a caseload of 2,473 and in 2012 collected $6,655,776 in child support payments. Ohio bases its child support program on the fundamental belief that children deserve financial support. If children truly are our future, then it is imperative that the child support program aid in the healthy development of children, requiring the emotional and financial support of both parents. Aside from public education, the child support program touches the lives of more children and families than any other public program. In fact, the program affects over one million children. The child support program ensures parents financially support their children when they are living apart. The program provides many important services, which include collecting child support for families, establishing the legal relationship between children and their parents, enforcing court orders and health insurance coverage. Ohio establishes paternity for more than 56,700 children born to unmarried parents each year. The state also has the third largest caseload in the nation, with nearly one million cases, and collects more than $2 billion dollars per year on average. Child support is the second largest source of income for single parent families, making up 39 percent of their total income. Employers collect nearly $1.4 Billion in child support payments each year.

On the last day of the Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale, Kiwanis members and volunteers sorted, boxed, and loaded unsold books into two trucks to be moved to Goodwill. Standing: Dick Patterson, Dick Sneary, George Wilber and Russ

Brown. In the truck: Jeff Smith, Bob St.Clair, Kathy Jo Schweitzer and Dick Highfield. This is a community service performed annually by the Kiwanis Club of Port Clinton.

Ottawa County “Home Delivered Meal Program” honored
Ottawa County Senior Resources announces that the Meals On Wheels Association of America has nationally recognized their March For Meals campaign. Ottawa County Home Delivered Meals Program received the Silver Award for $650 for their efforts to engage county seniors and a local business in the fight to end senior hunger. March For Meals is an annual campaign to raise awareness and generate community support around the importance of a nutritious meal and social connection to keeping homebound and hungry seniors more healthy and independent in their own homes. This year, the Meals On Wheels Association singled out 199 programs’ campaigns for their success. “We applaud all of our programs that leveraged this campaign to spotlight the issue of senior hunger in their comm u n i t i e s ,” commented Meals On Wheels Association President and CEO Ellie Hollander. “In these tough times, when so many of our Meals on Wheels programs are facing the loss of federal funds, community support and engagement is vital to ensuring that no senior goes hungry.” Ottawa County Senior Center Site Managers decided to encourage increased awareness of the needs of our home delivered meal recipients of Ottawa County by organizing a gift bag fundraiser. The fundraiser project was based on an idea from Danbury Senior Center site manager, Paula Shenkel. Site managers Tammy Reichert, Mary Jane Happel-Meadows, Candace Pucci along with Ms. Shenkel planned the event whereby seniors from each of the county’s six senior centers collected items to fill a reusable grocery bag. Each bag contained items such as paper towels; hand soap, toothpaste, facial tissues and other basic necessities that home bound seniors are often unable to get without assistance. The gift bags were delivered to each of the nearly 200 home delivered meal clients along with their daily hot meal. Ms. Shenkel suggested the idea to encourage members of the senior centers to help their fellow seniors by giving them practical items that they can really use. Walker Funeral Homes also helped with a monetary donation for the project. The money received from the grant will be used to pay for the reusable grocery bags used in the project.

Mona Rutger special guest at Conservation Day

BY JASMINE CUPP Since the early 1970s the Camp Perry Shooting Club has been a place shooters could go to practice trap and skeet shooting. Young or old, male or female, everyone is welcome at the Camp Perry Shooting Club. “Don’t be intimidated,” says John Bowers, manager of the shooting club. “We welcome all levels of skill here and are more than happy to help anyone out with what they would need. Everyone has to start somewhere.” At the club, which is located on the grounds of Camp Perry just west of Port Clinton, the first left after entering the gates, there are 8 shooting stations for skeet and 25 skeet per round. Ammunition is available to buy at the club, but shooters are encouraged to bring their own due to shortages nationwide. Also available at the

club is coffee and conversation. Bowers said that not only is shooting a confidence building sport, but it is also a way to meet people with the same interests. Terry Schuetz, Karen Anders, Tom Martin, and Bob Geiner were shooting a round on Thursday. Shuetz, Martin, and Geiner all agreed that Karen Anders is the one to beat. They said that she always beats them all, but they keep coming back as the laughs and the camaraderie seem to be worth the beating Karen gives them. Bowers welcomes everyone to come out to the Camp Perry Shooting Club to shoot, grab a cup of coffee, or to shoot the breeze. “Get granddad’s old shot-gun out here and give it a try.” For more information, call 419-635-2682.

Fishing Derby at the Fair
On Sunday, July 20th, at the Ottawa County Fair, the Oak Harbor FFA and Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District sponsored the annual Kids Fishing Derby. One hundred kids participated this year, some fishing for their first time. The Senior Fair Board stocked the racetrack pond with catfish so that the kids would have a pretty good chance of reeling in the big one. The largest catfish pulled in that morning weighed in at 6 ½ pounds. The fishing derby organizers would like to thank the following sponsors for donating to provide prizes for the top fishermen: Sprouse Agency, Bench’s Greenhouse, Ag Credit, Luckey Farmers, Louie and Val Damschroder, The Neiderhouse Family, The Rocket Shop, Fenwick Marina, Tank’s Meats, Friendship Food Stores, Radiant Windows, Marco’s Pizza, Batdorff Real Estate, Commodore Perry Federal Credit Union, Jack Bradley Realty and The Gordon Lumber Company. Ottawa County Fair School Art Exhibit ribbons were issued to the following students throughout Ottawa County. The School Art Exhibit is coordinated through the efforts of B. Jean Fanning and Sandra Butzin of North Point Educational Service Center and with the support of the Ottawa

County Cabinet of Superintendents (Guy Parmigian, Benton-Carroll-Salem Local; Patrick Adkins, Port Clinton City; Daniel Parent, Danbury Local; Dennis Mock, Genoa Area Local; Andrea Smith, North Point E.S.C.; and Linda Bringman, Woodmore Local).

BCS Schools finish fiscal year in black
For the first time in 5 years, the BentonCarroll-Salem Local Schools ended the fiscal year without deficit spending. After many years of using up cash reserves, the board along with administration began the long, painstaking task to reduce expenses. In the span of one year, expenses were reduced by nearly 12%, which played the largest part in ending the deficit spending trend. Treasurer Tim Coffman stated, “While it is certainly great to have eliminated deficit spending this past year, it is a trend we would like to see continued and we will work very hard to try and make that happen.” The past academic year was not without pain and hardship. Deficit spending and dropping enrollment necessitated major changes for the district. The district moved forward in 2012-2013 with 40 fewer positions in certified and classified staff district wide. The changes in personnel affected all areas within the district, including curricular and extracurricular activities. The elementary buildings, Graytown, Carroll and Rocky Ridge, were consolidated into one at RC Waters, which was reconfigured to service kindergarten through third grade students. The fourth grade students found a new home at Oak Harbor Middle School and the eighth graders were placed in their own wing at Oak Harbor High School. Start times for all buildings were changed and bus routes were reconfigured into single routes from double routes in years past. Changes in administration in both the treasurer and superintendent positions were crucial to the district’s success. All of the sacrifices incurred by both the staff and parents of the BCS district contributed to the end of deficit spending. “The strength and resiliency of all B-C-S staff, and putting students first, have made the 2012-2013 transition school year a success for the school district,” commented Superintendent Dr. Guy Parmigian. While 2012-2013 was most definitely a year of change in the BCS district, these changes will not define the district. The board and the administration are committed to making good financial decisions in an effort to ward off massive changes to the educational system as seen last year. Even though revenue streams are relatively stagnant, Coffman remains vigilant when trying to identify possible ways to recoup current expenses. Superintendent Parmigian scrutinizes any additional expense and has adopted a zero-sum approach to finances, meaning that where possible, any additional expense must be balanced by a reduction.

The Port Clinton Community Band gave a concert last Sunday afternoon before an enthusiastic and appreciative crowd at Port Clinton Yacht Club. The group will again be performing again this Monday, Aug. 12, at 7 p.m. at Lakeview Park. I told director Rod Miller that he was my “second favorite local sousaphone player” right behind Jon Waters, director of bands at THE Ohio State University. He reminded me that he has one more “i-dotting” than does the Elmore native. Anyway, bring a blanket or a lawn chair and enjoy the free concert. In case of bad weather, the concert will be moved to the PCHS Performing Arts Center.

Fun and good food will be on the agenda when Ottawa County’s Democrats host a picnic next Thursday, Aug. 15, at the Bay Township Hall on State Route 53 south of Port Clinton. The meal will begin at 6 p.m. with hot dogs, burgers and all the trimmings. Guests are asked to bring a side dish. Table service will be provided so just come and enjoy the fellowship and meal. It is a kid-friendly event. It is free and reservations are not required.

the “Voice of the Redskins” on radio back when this class was winning championships. PCHS has 2 outstanding athletic classes in 1977 and 1978, and the football teams from 1975-77 went 7-3, 9-1 and 8-2 during that golden era. Many of the members of this class have remained extremely close over the intervening 35 years. Have fun, kids!

Sharon Mefferd, longtime member of the board with the Friends of Port Clinton Parks wrote me this week asking me to write an item about their Annual Flea Market/Garage Sale to be held on Saturday, Aug. 17. Crafters and families interested can set up a 12’ x 12’ space for only $15. The sale will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lakeview Park. The Friends will serve a pancake breakfast and a hot dog lunch. For more information or to become a vendor, contact Sharon at 419-734-2954. Walleye and perch fishing still great in the Western Basin
It’s been a strange fishing season this year. Normally we have to chase the nomadic walleye around to different areas of the lake as they follow their forage base, but this season they have been staying in relatively the same areas for a couple of months. The east side of Pelee Island and the weather buoy have been consistently holding walleye for many months. While the size of fish on Northwest Reef or the “Kidney” as it’s referred to, are smaller than earlier in the year, they are still being caught there. Reports of nice size walleye are being caught on the reefs out in front of Port Clinton, too. The perch have been moving around a lot more this season, but can still be found in and around the islands, all Larry Crum Jr., happy with his catch around Pelee Island and over near Vermilion and Huron. Over the season I have written about things like looking at your sonar to locate fish in the water column and determining where the “strike zone” is, how to use line counter reels to get your baits in the strike zone, and how being organized can help you be successful on the water. Here is another little tip to help you put fish in the boat. This will allow you to have all the information you need right at your fingertips. Granted, this tip is for those with a smart phone, so if you don’t have a smart phone you can print out the information from your computer and just keep it on the boat someplace. Do a web search for “Dive Curve Charts for inline weights”, “Dive Curve Charts for Tadpoles” (#1, #2, #3’s), and “Dive Curve Charts for 40 Tru-Trip Jets”. Then save the image of the dive curve chart to your smart phone. Place them in their own photo album, so you don’t have to spend time searching for them in your main photo album. Then, when you want to look up how much line is needed out to get your baits in the strike zone, you can simply click on the picture and get the information you seek. Touchable Creations and more at this year’s Appetite for the Arts
“Look, don’t touch!” doesn’t apply to the work of Dani Herrera, one of the artists participating in the 2013 Appetite for the Arts, Aug. 16-18 at the Erie-Ottawa Regional Airport. Herrera creates art from random scraps and other things she finds, such as buttons, zippers, dryer lint, newspaper and recycled materials. “I encourage people to touch it. I want them to feel what it’s made out of,” said the homegrown Toledo artist. “I use pretty much anything I can get my hands on to create eye catching pieces of art that will make you look twice,” she said. Her art features pop culture icons, historic figures, portraits, still lifes and more. Since the self-taught artist’s debut in 2011, she’s had gallery showings in New York and Chicago and has won awards. She will be sharing a booth with her artist husband, Jose Herrera, who uses polymer clay and found materials to create fantastic creepy-looking creatures. In addition to the Herreras, Appetite for the Arts will feature a variety of artists who work in painting, jewelry, glass, woodworking, fabric, hand-thrown pottery, mixed media, steel and other art forms. In addition to appetizing art available for purchase, visitors will have an opportunity to sample food and drink and listen to music by local entertainers including the Womack Family Band, the Naked Bacon Band, Bob Lawitzke and Steve Hall. Children of all ages will enjoy making their own flight-themed art using recycled materials. No tickets are needed for Saturday and Sunday – the event is free.  Tickets are still available for the Friday night gala, a “Red Carpet Affair,” with a preview of artists’ works, classic and collector cars and music by the Womack Family Band. Patrons can sample culinary delights provided by   The Cakery’s Bakery, Cheesehaven, Ciao Bella, Nagoya, Catawba Island Club, Rosie’s/1812 Food & Spirits, Catawba Island Brewery, Firelands Wine, Mon Ami Winery, Wendy Kromer Confections, McCarthy’s Pub. Mon Ami, Phil’s, Papa Jimmie’s, Bootlegger’s Waterfront Grille and Bar, Red Gables, Tre Sorrelle, Waldo Peppers and Bassett’s Tickets are $35 and are available online through www.PortClintonArts.org, and locally at Mary’s Blossom Shoppe, Bassetts, and Real Living Morgan Realty Group. Sunday’s Fly In/Drive In Pancake Breakfast will offer opportunities for youth to fly in an airplane. For more information about this year’s Appetite for the Arts (sponsored in part by Lake Erie Shores & Islands), check the website www.PortClintonArts.org. The Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council started with a grant from the Ohio Arts Council and has blossomed into an organization that serves and inspires artists and patrons, both big and small. Sandusky Art Walk
On Thursday, Aug. 1, Sandusky hosted its monthly Art Walk downtown. The Sandusky Art Walk takes place the first Thursday of the month, May through December. From Washington Park down Columbus Avenue down to the waterfront and in surrounding areas artists and art lovers wandered the streets. In between visiting vendors and dodging rain, participants visited local businesses along the route of the Art Walk. Photos by Jasmine Cupp. More photos at www.thebeacon.net.

Arts in the Park
BY JASMINE CUPP 2013 was the 57th year for one of the oldest art shows in our area, Arts in the Park. Held on the first weekend of August each year, Arts in the Park draws in artists from all over Ohio and even artists from states as far away as Florida. This year there were 111 vendors, 10 food vendors and eight to ten thousand people were expected to come visit the park overall. The Port Clinton Artists’ Club puts on the Arts in the Park; they have a little over 100 members. The booths for the Port Clinton Artists’ Club were located in the shelter house at Lakeview Park. “This year we expect the wonderful weather to bring out even more people than last year,” said Barb Gaynor, one of three of the show’s co-directors. A jury judges the booths and vendors and awards a top prize to the winner. Spectators can also vote on their favorite booth and artist. The winner of the judging gets a free spot at next year’s Arts in the Park. “It’s a reward to see it all set up and people enjoying art,” said Rosalie Kastelic, a member of the Port Clinton Artists’ Club and show co-director.”The passion people in Port Clinton have for art keeps Arts in the Park going. The passion everyone in the surrounding areas has for art keeps them coming back year after year.” More photos at www.thebeacon.net

National Rifle Matches in full swing
BY DONNA LUEKE The rhythmic pop, pop, pop from the firing of a hundred guns interspersed with the tower’s authoritative commands provide the soundtrack each morning for five weeks in July and August at Camp Perry near Port Clinton. The slightly acrid scent of gunpowder mixes with the fresh, cool air off Lake Erie for a heady aroma that lingers over the country’s largest rifle range at the National Rifle and Pistol Matches. On a breezy and sunny morning last Thursday the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s M1 Carbine Match was held for the eight year since it was reinstated by the Civilian Marksmanship Program. First-time shooters, with their patient coaches, fired side by side with expert marksmen, all cradling the wooden stocks and canvas slings of the classic military semi-automatic weapon used by their fathers and grandfathers from World War II through Vietnam. The M1, known as “the rifle they never let grow up”, now is considered an antique weapon. The five stages and targets of the M1 competition were sighting, prone slow fire (10 shots in 10 minutes), prone rapid fire (10 shots in 60 seconds), sitting rapid fire and standing slow fire, all at 100 yards. The staccato rhythm of rapid fire and the varied tempo of slow fire alternated with the silence of preparation time and waiting for the next tower’s next directive. Targets were retrieved, brass casings were gathered, scores were compiled, and the next wave of competitors took their place on the firing line. There was one disruption to the orderly dance as a disabled boat in the firing range area of the Lake was towed to safety. Boaters need to take seriously the buoys marking the firing range as the shots from high powered rifles and pistols can travel a mile or more. The easy camaraderie of shooters and officials, coaches and volunteers from across the country camouflage the serious competition of the shooter-athletes. Few sports provide such definitive results of the blending of skill, practice and equipment. Ashley Brugnone, writer and editor with CMP, was shooting for the first time, with the coaching of CMP’s Steve Cooper. As to concerns about hitting another person’s targets, known as cross-firing, she said she had heard that, “There are two kinds of shooters-- those who have cross-fired, and those who will.” Bill and Cindy Bailey from Fairview, OH, also competing in the M1 match, inherited rifles from their Dad. They have been shooting high power for four years “just for fun”. They shot as a team in the Vintage Sniper competition this year and took a bronze medal. In the Sniper competition the targets are at 600 yards. The Baileys are both motivated to get more proficient “before our kids start outshooting us.” Bert Fall of Port Clinton was shooting an M1 for the first time, but is an experienced shooter. Christine Elder of CMP was his coach. Though he did not win the coveted trophy or a medal, Fall had no problems handling the M1 and shot a respectable score. AE2 Daniel Hedner of Virginia Beach took vacation time to be part of the Navy team and make the trip to Port Clinton. Safety instructor for M1 Leon Rutherford of Anniston, AL, was one of the hundreds of NRA volunteers who keep the matches running smoothly. Douglas Thompson of California earned medals for service rifle and also for pistol. He was one of the elite 100 of the 1300 competitors to medal in the CMP President’s 100 match. Thompson echoed the opinion of many of the shooters who look forward all year to coming to Camp Perry. He said, “I am not new to the Matches, just new at doing good. As soon as my grandkids are old enough, I

will be bringing them here. This is the mecca, a national treasure.” The National Rifle and Pistol Matches continue at Camp Perry through Aug. 14. D&J Automotive and Freeman’s SureShine
BY JASMINE CUPP With years of experience between them, Jamie Stoops from D&J Automotive and Brett Freeman from Freeman’s SureShine Auto Detail are making a one stop shop for Port Clinton’s automotive needs. D&J Automotive and Freeman’s SureShine are located at 318 Buckeye Blvd., across from Star Lanes at the Harbor bowling alley. Jamie and Brett ensure quality customer service. Both businesses provide pick-up service for detailing and maintenance. “Some people don’t have time when they work all day and have a family to take care of. Let us come pick the car up. We have the time, and we will take good care of your vehicle,” says Stoops. With 12 years experience in the auto repair industry and 4 years of management experience, Stoops decided to go out on his own and start a new business. Also located on the grounds of D&J Automotive are storage facilities for rent. “We are fair and reasonable,” says Stoops. “I just ask that people give us a try.” With 33 years experience under his belt, Freeman was looking to expand his business. “I’m the only detail shop in Port Clinton,” says Freeman. “I want to give the customer the highest grade of service; I want to have the vehicle looking like it came off the showroom floor after I’m done. I would love to rekindle the flame between the car
