PT-728 reborn as “Thomcat”
BY DONNA LUEKE In dry dock near Port Clinton, PT-728 is being rebuilt, refurbished and improved. By next summer she will be the only PT boat that will be licensed by the US Coast Guard and approved for passengers. According to Jeff Sondles, Administrator of the Liberty Aviation Museum, the experience of going aboard their PT-728 “will be like the crew just left it and we are invading their privacy.” In addition to having 85% of her 72foot wooden hull replaced, PT-728 will have new engines to provide the original feel of the PT boat. PT boats were known by the Japanese navy in the South Pacific as “mosquito boats” and “devil boats” for their speed, heavy armament and quickstrike capabilities. She will achieve speeds of 40-45 mph. Depth charges and torpedoes will not be operational, but the guns will be capable of firing blank rounds. “The delicate dance” between accuracy and safety will feature a modern helm and wiring with the presentation as close to the original as possible. The Coast Guard has been working very closely with the museum throughout the restoration to ensure a re-certification to carry 49 passengers. PT-728 is painted green, the color of the boats that were in service in the South Pacific. Another difference for PT-728 will be her name. With the blessing of the family of Sandusky native and Lenny Thom, PT728 will be named after Thom’s PT boat, “Thomcat”. The story of Thom and his experiences with John Kennedy aboard PT-109 are told by Sondles in the following article. Last summer PT-728 was acquired by the museum and transported through the Erie Canal to Lake Erie and to its new home in Port Clinton. Half a dozen volunteers of the museum transported her on the historic journey. “Once the AP published a story about us traveling though the Canal, we were treated like rock stars,” remembers Captain Frank Nenodovich. “People were standing along the canal waving the American Flag, WWII Vets would stand and salute, they would bring us dinner … it was all very patriotic and humbling.” After arriving in Port Clinton, PT 728 was put in dry dock for complete refurbishing when the extent of the structural damage was discovered. Once the bilges were emptied, and she was dry-docked, according to Capt. Nenodovich, “she dripped water for two weeks”. PT 728 was built in 1945 at the Annapolis Yacht yard, and was scheduled for the British or Russian navy as part of the lend-lease act. Once the atomic bomb was dropped, the PT boats in the Pacific were burned and scrapped, and those still stateside, like PT-728, were sold for use as cabin cruisers or by the Navy as training boats. What exactly is an aviation museum doing with a PT boat? That is a question often directed to museum President and CEO Ed Patrick. “Well… first of all, we are located in the ‘Lake Erie Shores and Islands Region’ popular with many Midwesterners who like to boat and fish on

Why a PT boat?

When we had an opportunity to get this PT boat for the museum, I jumped at the chance” states Patrick. “To have such a unique local connection in the form of a local Sandusky boy playing a significant role in the future of our country, it was a logical step that we honor Lenny’s legacy by naming PT-728 the ‘Thomcat’.” Once the restoration and sea trials are completed, possibly yet this fall, “Thomcat” looks forward to conducting dockside

tours and “torpedo runs” for the general public on weekends next summer. During the weekdays it will be available for “executive torpedo runs” for businesses. The museum has already been receiving inquiries about booking trips. Considering all the work that needed to be done, Capt. Nenodovich is thrilled that they have achieved “quite a goal in one year.” For more information contact Liberty Aviation Museum, 3515 E. State Road, Port Clinton, 419 734-0234, and [email protected]. Lenny Thom and PT 109
BY JEFF SONDLES LIBERTY AVIATION MUSEUM Aug. 2, 2013, will mark the 70th anniversary of what was initially filed away in the U.S Navy history as a seemingly minor incident. Instead, the story later helped propel a rather obscure son of a well-known American diplomat into that of war hero and household name, to senator, and finally president of the United States in 1960. U.S. Navy Lt. Junior Grade John Fitzgerald Kennedy was about to become famous, and join the ranks of our nation’s Greatest Generation. The incident involved Kennedy’s command of patrol boat PT-109 during WWII, and its harrowing run-in with a Japanese destroyer in a war-ravaged corner of the Pacific. It is also a story of courage, determination and charismatic strength of character that revealed leadership qualities that would serve Kennedy well as president. After Kennedy became president the incident became a cultural phenomenon. A full size replica of PT-109 was even created for his inaugural parade. ABC produced a TV situation comedy series,“McHale’s Navy”, showing the lighter moments of PT Boat service in WWII. A Hollywood movie “PT-109”, starring Cliff Roberson, was released in 1963. Had it not been for the actions of San-

tion Thom was offered a contract by the Chicago Bears, but instead joined the US Navy in June 1942 under an accelerated midshipman program. He became enamdusky native Leonard Jay Thom, this inci- ored with the excitement of the fast boats dent would have been known only to the of the PT Service, and while attending PT grieving families of the lost crew of the PT- Boat training school in Rhode Island, met 109. During the early morning hours of Aug. 2, 1943, PT-109 was in position off the Ferguson Passage and the Blackett Strait, idling on one engine so it would not kick up any wake activity which could give away its position. Suddenly, out of the moonless night, the Japanese destroyer Amagiri appeared, leading its escort of transports. The Captain of the Amagiri had no time to alter course chose to ram the other object. The destroyer sliced through the wooden boat and set off an explosion which could be seen from another PT boat some five miles away. The size of this explosion led the other PT boats to assume there were no survivors. For six days the crew was lost and presumed dead somewhere in a series of islands, many still occupied by the enemy. During the early hours of that first day the surviving crew managed to swim to a small island, but unfortunately it provided no source of water or food. The survivors then swam to yet another island on the second day. In constant fear of being spotted by enemy patrols the survivors stayed concealed during the day and moved around at dusk. Kennedy was their best swimmer so he would swim out into the channel in hopes of signaling a passing PT Boat. On that second island they found some water, and coconuts, but no food. On one such coconut Lt. Kennedy carved a message and gave to some passing native

PORTS funds floating two Tall Ships
Last week we told you about the PORTS Committee and their activity preparing the way for the arrival of two Tall Ships on Aug. 29 and the following Labor Day Weekend. It has been my honor to work on this committee planning Port Clinton’s activities for that very special weekend. We had another planning meeting on Monday and the committee’s treasurer, Dave Mehl, announced that, through sponsorships and donations, the Committee has now raised nearly $42,000 for the effort. They just completed the Tall Ships weekend in Duluth, MN, and nearly 100,000 people showed up to view the boats. It is all part of the bi-centennial celebration of the naval victory of the American Fleet led by Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry in September of 1813, and 16 tall ships will be visiting a number of ports around the western basin of Lake Erie over Labor Day weekend.

American Red Cross thanks Gala attendees and supporters
The American Red Cross of Ottawa County hosted the Boogie Woogie Bugle Girls of Company Red Friday, July 19, at the Liberty Aviation Museum in Port Clinton. The 6th annual Club Red fundraising gala was a benefit for local Red Cross disaster relief and recovery. This year’s theme encouraged guests to wear World War II or USO apparel as they were transported to the 40’s for the evening. Guests to the sold-out affair enjoyed hors d’oeuvres with dinner provided by Zinc Brasserie. Honored guests were Dr. Harold Brown and his wife, Dr. Marsha Bordner, as well as Dorothy “Dottie” Patrick. Retired Lt. Col. Brown served as a Tuskegee Airman and flew a Red Tail P-51 Mustang during World War II. He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in March 2007 for his brave service and dedication to our country. Dottie, an accomplished pilot, is a past member of the women aviators group, ‘Ninety-Nines, Inc.’, and an active member of the Erie-Ottawa County Airport Authority. Gala chair Danis Putzbach shared her personal memory of Patrick building a plane in the Patrick family room and then flying it. Members of The Ohio State University Traveling Band, under the direction of Jon Waters, energized the crowd by playing Big Band era music and OSU standards. Waters also opened the live auction portion of the evening by offering the first item up for bid -a day with the OSU band for two people, including passes to Skull Session and sitting with the band at a home game. “We would like to especially thank everyone who volunteered for and sponsored this year’s event. Their contributions are so important to its success,” said Beth Leggett, director of American Red Cross in Ottawa County. “Our volunteers exemplify our mission every day, whether responding to disaster calls in the middle of the night or spending hours coordinating events like this. We couldn’t support our community without their dedication and I can’t thank them enough. We would also like to thank the local businesses and individuals who supported us with donations for our auctions and sideboard prizes.” Crown Battery Manufacturing, Co. and Janotta & Herner shared the B-17 Flying Fortress sponsor level. B-25 Mitchell level sponsors were Carbo Forge, Inc.; Magruder Hospital; O.E. Meyer, Co.; red, white, & brew of Elmore; The Bank of America Charitable Foundation; Anthony and Myrna Pastore; Richard and Michelle Schultz; and Kim and Liz Skrinak. IT’S TIME TO GET YOUR

AUGUST BACK
BY JASMINE CUPP On Thursday, July 25, Winous Point hosted the fourth annual Day on the Wild Side. Winous Point is a private hunt and shooting club that also houses students and researchers on its 5000 acres on Sandusky Bay south of Port Clinton. In operation since 1856, Winous Point is the oldest hunt club in the United States. On Thursday it was open to the public for children grades 5-9 to attend a day at the marsh. Day on the Wild Side is an all day camp where students can learn and participate in all things wild. There were four stations at the camp: bird banding and bird house building, navigating a duck hunt punt boat, shooting weaponry, and fishing. This year 60 students attended. At the bird station the students identified song birds with the help of Kaufman’s Bird Guide and volunteers from Black Swamp Bird Observatory. Birds were banded and studied before being released. Students also built bluebird houses with wood that had been pre-cut by Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District personnel. The Division of Wildlife provided poles and worms for students and then took them to a designated area where they fished. The students were then shown how to fillet their fish. Jacob Wukie, a silver medalist at the London Olympic Games, was there to help the students with archery. Students lined up and took their shots at the target as Wukie and volunteers looked on. At another station students learned how to paddle out to a duck blind in a punt boat. Each guide took a small group of children to a blind. At this station students also planted a native tree and learned about the importance of trees and their habitats. Before lunch Mona Rutger and her assistant Sammy from Back to the Wild gave a presentation about their Castalia-based

coastal watchers that lead to their rescue. It simply stated: “Naru Isl Native knows posit He can pilot 11 alive need small boat Kennedy” This coconut is now a historic treasure. It accomplished its purpose and lead to their rescue. It was returned to Kennedy and was a prized procession in Oval Office during his term. It currently resides in the JKF Library. Lost in the details of history and legend can be found the story of Lenny Thom, whose actions and message preceded, and in military circles overshadows, Kennedy’s coconut. It was Lenny Thom who first met and communicated with the native coastal watchers while Kennedy had been swimming to another island in search of help and food. The natives had previously spotted Kennedy and another crewmember on a nearby island, but fled thinking they were Japanese. To the native coast watchers disheveled lighter skinned people all looked the same. These same native coastal watchers then came near enough to the island where the remainder of the PT-109 crew were now marooned. Not sure if these natives were scouts for the Japanese or not, Lenny Thom made a bold choice and hailed them. There was absolutely no way of confusing the big, strapping, blond haired Ensign Lenny Thom for a Japanese. While not able to converse in the same language, Lenny knew the names of some of the other native coastal watchers, and repeated “White Star” and pointed to the sky. The natives knew that people who parachuted out of airplanes with the “White Star” were the good guys, and they were to be treated well and assisted to get back to their bases safely. This was that game-changing moment. Thom knew these two native coastal watchers were their ticket home. Finding a scrap piece of paper and the stub of a pencil in the islander’s canoe, Lenny Thom scribed: “To: Commanding Officer--Oak O From: Crew P.T. 109 (Oak 14) Subject:  Rescue of 11(eleven) men lost since Sunday, August 1 in enemy action. Native knows our position & will bring P.T. Boat back to small islands of Ferguson Passage off NURU IS. A small boat (outboard or oars) is needed to take men off as some are seriously burned. or a PBY could set down. Please work out a suitable plan & act immediately Help is urgent & in sore need. Rely on native boys to any extent   Thom   Ens. U.S.N.R   Exec. 109.” This is a very methodical note written in military tone and formality to ensure that the message could not be misconstrued or perceived as an enemy ruse to ambush a possible rescue. Kennedy, upon returning to the island, OH LIC #32728 thought of carving out the message on the now famous coconut. Perhaps he felt that if they natives ran into a Japanese patrol, a paper message could easily be discovered where an inconspicuous coconut included in with their food supply would not be discovered. The coconut was destined to become an iconic relic of what would become a part of the legend of Camelot. The paper message, perhaps less dramatic than the shell, nonetheless made it to the PT Boat’s home base, and the Serving Ottawa County for 98 Years! survivors were rescued. Lenny Thom would receive a promotion and his own PT Boat, which his crew named “Thomcat”. Thom and Kennedy would remain close friends. When they were rotated back states side in 1944, Thom married www.oandh1915.com his college sweetheart, Catherine J. Holway, and was as signed to the PT Boat training school in Melville, RI. The newlyweds were guests of the Kennedy family at their Hyannis Port compound on two occasions that summer. Unfortunately, life is not fair. After surviving the PT109 event and the war, Lenny Thom died of injuries sustained in an automobile/ train accident in October, 1946. He was only 29 years old. Senator Jack Kennedy served as one of Lenny’s pallbearers. Lenny Thom’s photo and mementos provided by his family are exhibited in the Liberty Aviation Museum. Captain Juls’ Fishing Report

How to save money and make a crawler harness at home
A popular bait to troll with on Lake Erie from late spring to early fall is the crawler harness. You’ll pay upwards of $3-$5for some pre-tied crawler harnesses in the local sporting good stores and bait shops, but you can make them yourself for pennies on the dollar right in your own home. All that is needed are some beads, hooks, line, clevises, and little baggies. I’m going to share with you how I build my harnesses, so you can easily build them too. are in line with each other. This will ensure better hook ups when a fish bites. Wrap the line around the shank 7-10 when the white bass, white perch and sheephead are in competition for your baits. Speeding up the presentation helps to eliminate some of those junk fish bites. Blades come in different sizes too. The most common size for this lake is the #5 and #6 blade. Size is reflected in the number. Unlike hooks, the smaller the number is, the larger the hook is, and the larger the number is, the smaller the hook is; blades are logical. The #5 blade will be a little smaller than #6. Sometimes switching from one size to the other is all that it takes to get fish to start biting, so experimenting while you’re on the water is a wise practice. When you are satisfied with your work, the tag end of the line needs to be finished off with a loop/knot or by attaching a barrel swivel. I like to use the loop/knot since it’s free, and that means one less thing to buy. Take the tag end of the line and fold it back on itself one time, so there is about 3-4 inches of doubled up line. Holding the double line in your left hand, make an over hand loop. Pinch the connecting point with a thumb and index finger. You now have one big loop with the tag end being a smaller loop now too. With the opposite hand, slide your index finger through the big loop (just at the tip) and turn the loop around one time, so that the connecting point forms a second twist in

This illustration shows how to tie a snell knot. Start by cutting a 5 foot piece of 17-20 pound test monofilament or fluorocarbon line from the spool. I usually cut a dozen at a time, so the line doesn’t end up all over the house from a playful cat. When it comes to hooks, they are not all created equal. Buy a good quality hook known for its sharpness. Your bait shop dealer can help you with that. I like to use a size 2 hook for my harnesses. Start by putting the tag end of the line through the eye of the hook, so that the line is headed down the shank of the hook about ½ inch long. Then tightly wrap the line around the shank, covering that tag end, anywhere from 7-10 turns. Bring the end of the line back through the eye from the bottom, out through the top, and pull tight. You can stop at this point if you want to use it as a one hook casting harness, like a “Weapon”, or you can add another hook to make a two hook trolling harness.

times and send the tag end of the line through the eye the same direction; from the bottom out through the top. It’s time to add the colored beads to your harness. This is the fun part. Most often you’ll find an 8 mm bead used. You can find these in different colors, and in bulk, in many of the local bait shops around town, or you can go to a craft store to buy them. Some tried and true colors that you should have in your box are orange, purple, chartreuse, green, red, blue, silver, gold, pink and white. There are several other colors available to use, but this basic 10 will get you started. Creating color patterns is fun and easy. For instance, purple and chartreuse, purple and orange, purple and white, green and orange, pink and white, pink and chartreuse, red and gold, green and gold, green and chartreuse, are all great color combinations that work on Lake Erie and other bodies of water. But it’s not the only color patterns that work. Use your imagination and just create something you think might work. But make sure to make at least 4 of them, because if it does work,

For the two hook harness, add the second hook by putting the tag end of the line through the eye from the bottom and out through the top of the hook. Slide the hook down the line until it’s about 4 inches from the other hook. Try to make sure the hooks are facing the same way and

and you only made one, then you can’t put more out to put more fish in your boat at a faster pace. Adding a quick change clevis will make it easy for changing to different blades that you want to experiment with. Blades are created differently. Colorado blades, which are round in shape, are for slower moving harnesses and give a loud “thump, thump, thump” as they spin through the water. Indiana blades are more of a tear drop shaped blade that allows the spinner to move at a faster pace through the water, giving the noise a different vibration. Willow blades, which are pointy on both ends and allow you to go even faster, are most often used in the heat of summer

the line. Grab the tag end loop with the finger that is already through the big loop, and pull it through. Then, pull it tight. You now have a finished crawler harness ready to use or to store for use at a later date. Storing finished harnesses, without the blades attached, can be done easily in small Ziploc bags and kept in a deep waterproof box with many slots to keep them organized by color patterns. Catching fish on a crawler harness that you created is very satisfying, so enjoy making your own harnesses and good luck fishing! Joyful Connections seeking teams to play “Family Frenzy”
Joyful Connections is hosting its signature event, “Family Frenzy” on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 6 p.m. at the Catawba Island Township Hall on NW Catawba Road. Family Frenzy is played in a similar fashion to the game show “Family Feud”. Joyful Connections is seeking six teams of five players to compete in this fun-filled event. The questions are designed to raise a laugh from the audience, so teams must be prepared to have some fun. Answers for the questions are based on what “the survey says.” Prizes will be awarded to the winning team along with bragging rights for next year’s event. The team registration fee is $125 and includes a Chicken BBQ and Rib Dinner and soft drinks for all five team members. A cash bar will be available. Deadline to register is August 15. Only six teams are eligible for this event. Entry will be on a first come, first served basis. For more information or to register your team, contact Sheila Powell at 567-262-3181 or [email protected]. All proceeds benefit Joyful Connections. Joyful Connections mission is to provide a child-focused, healthy, safe, and home-like environment where children can interact with family members in a non-judgmental setting. The event is sponsored by the Family Frenzy Fanatics, St. Boniface Catholic Church, St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Oak Harbor, and the Survey Smarties National Bank of Ohio.

Lakeside Symphony Orchestra in concert with Pointe of Departure Ballet August 3
The Lakeside Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will perform its 13th concert with the Pointe of Departure Ballet Company in the Annual Iva M. Clark Memorial Concert at 8:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, in Hoover Auditorium. This exciting group of dancers, led by Karen Gabay and Raymond Rodriguez, will perform a delightful program including some of the most colorful dances in the ballet repertoire. The program will open with the Polovetsian Dances from Alexander Borodin’s opera “Prince Igor.”  Written for a full orchestra, the dances contain the exotic colors of Polovetsians, descendants from central Asia. Borodin borrowed much of the thematic material from dance melodies and choruses of these indigenous tribes. The audience will recognize this music, as some of the melodies have been used in several movies. The equally famous Pas de Quatre (dance for four) by Cesare Pugni and the pas de deux (dance for two) by Ludwig Minkus will complete the first half of the program. Both dances are elegant in nature and are in complete contrast to the rhythmic dynamism of Borodin’s dances. Music from Georges Bizet’s popular opera “Carmen” will open the second half of the program.  These Spanish dances are very colorful and full of passion, conveying the flavor and spirit of this southern European country. The “Flower Festival at Lenzano” is a delightful Danish ballet by Gustaf Hellsted and Holger Paulli. The scene

takes place in a fictional location, probably similar to many festivals in Northern Europe. It is a piece scored for a smaller orchestra. The program will close with the finale to Alexandre Glazouov’s “Raymonda,” an energetic whirling dance for the whole company.

Pointe of Departure Ballet is composed of nine dancers. The dancers include, Ramon Moreno (Cuba), Maykel Solas (Cuba), Jing Zhang (China), Junna Ige (Japan) Akira Takahashi (Japan), Damir Emric (Bosnia), and American dancers Amy Marie Briones, Gabay and Rodriguez.

Abby Paskvan coming to Oak Harbor this October
17-year old recording artist Abby Paskvan will be presenting a concert on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 4p.m. at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Oak Harbor. Paskvan, who released her first CD in 2010, has recently been voted top five for “New Soloist of the Year” by fans of the Singing News Magazine and has been named top ten “Christian Country Female Artist of the Year” by SGN Scoops Digital Magazine. A Southern Gospel artist with Chapel Valley Recording Studios, Abby is also a student at Bowling Green High School. She is a fan favorite and regular National Anthem Headliner at Bowling Green State University, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians and Toledo Mud Hens sporting events and more. Abby also regularly performs at Christmas in the Smokies in Pigeon Forge, TN, and has performed at Dollywood, Gatlinburg Gathering, on a Carnival Cruise to Alaska and has earned her way to the main stage at the 2012 National Quartet Convention. Tickets for the concert are $10 each. Following the concert, a special “Eat-andGreet” dinner with Abby will be available for $20 (includes ticket to concert, 1/2 chicken meal with sides and beverages). There will only be 75 tickets available for the meal. Additional carry-out tickets will be available for $8 to anyone who would like to purchase a meal. Meals will be available to be picked up from 5 to 6 p.m. at the church. Tickets are available at St. Paul United Church of Christ (165 Toussaint Street) between the hours of 9 a.m.-noon Monday Fridays, by emailing pastorkyletimmons@ live.com or by calling 419-898-0852 during the hours listed.

Johnson’s Island Wine Tasting
On Saturday, Aug. 31, Johnson’s Island is hosting their annual Wine-Tasting event at the Johnson’s Island Clubhouse in Marblehead. The Wine Tasting, from 7-9 p.m., is open to the public. The $30 tickets are limited in number due to the clubhouse size, so advance reservations are recommended. The ticket price includes a beautiful wine glass, samples of wines and beers from around the world, many great appetizers and music. Proceeds go for Johnson’s Island Clubhouse improvements. For reservations and information, contact Jerry at 419-702-7011. To get to the Johnson’s Island clubhouse, follow Bayshore Road to Gaydos drive. Turn south onto Gaydos and to the tollgate and causeway to the island. Once on the island, proceed straight after stopping at the four-way intersection. The clubhouse is a short distance on the left (east) side, just before the Confederate Cemetery. There is a $2.00 toll (payable by either dollars or quarters) to get onto the island.

First Annual Lenny Appelhans Open
The Friends of Riverview Nursing Home Levy Committee announces the first annual Lenny Appelhans Open Golf Scramble. The event will take place on Saturday August 17, at the Oak Harbor Golf Club. The morning begins with a shot gun start at 8 a.m., includes lunch and other activities throughout the morning. The event is in memory of Lenny Appelhans (also known as the Voice of the Oak Harbor Rockets). Lenny was the Staff Accountant at Ottawa County Riverview Nursing Home at the time of his passing on July 3, 2011. Lenny loved working at Riverview as well as spending time on the Golf Course with his friends. The committee is combining Lenny’s loves and planning this special event, with all proceeds benefiting the Friends of Riverview Nursing Home Levy Committee. The scramble is a 4 person scramble. The cost is $60 per person and will include golf, dinner and two drink tickets. The winning team of the scramble will enjoy a four person round of golf and lunch at the Catawba Island Club Golf Course. Hole sponsorships of varying levels are still available. The Committee will also be looking for door prizes for the participants on the day of the event. The Gold Sponsor is Red, White & Brew of Elmore. For more information call Kendra German at 419-967-0219.
