United Way in Ottawa County launches campaign with Day of Caring
BY DONNA LUEKE The United Way in Ottawa County held the kickoff of their 2013 campaign with a breakfast meeting and a Day of Caring. Live United tshirts and jeans were the appropriate attire, as many of those in attendance went from the meeting to work on projects at the Conestoga West End park. Karen Mathison, CEO of United Way of Greater Toledo, emphasized that this is the 95th anniversary of United Way. “More than 2000 times last year the phone rang in Ottawa County from people asking for help. The idea of community is no small thing,” said Mathison.” When all kids and families have the benefits of United Way, we all win.” To the dozens of caring attendees, Mathison said, “The world is run by people that show up. Thank you all for showing up.” Chip Carstensen, President of Block Communications, United Way of Greater Toledo Campaign Chair for 2013, emphasized that “this campaign is all about kids. We are paying it forward. When we were kids, somebody paid it forward for our benefit.” Carstensen put out a call for the 80% of working people that don’t give to United Way. Christine Galvin, Area Director of United Way in Ottawa County, asked the question, “What is it that our kids need? How can we, right here, make sure that every kid in Ottawa County has the chance to be the wonderful people that you are? We are funding great programs right now. We need to fund more.” The volunteers then adjourned to the First Official Day of Caring in Ottawa County, upgrading the West End play- USG team spreads mulch at the West End playground on the first Day of Caring in Ottawa County. grounds.

First reports on Bicentennial weekend
There has been much positive feedback from visitors, organizers, and participants at the Bicentennial celebration last weekend. What can we quantify, ahead of the final numbers and economic impact estimates? • “over 50,000—the number of visitors at Put-in-Bay on the four day weekend,” said Julene Market of Miller Ferry, who compiled numbers from their passenger ticket sales, estimate of the Jet Express sales, and from the marinas. • Complete sell out—the red t-shirts sold by the Perry Group with the bicentennial logo on the front and an OSU Buckeye emblem on the back with “We have met the Wolverines and they are ours”. • “Many businesses in Port Clinton report their best weekend of sales ever,” Bill Yuhaz of the PORTS committee. • “3000 tickets were sold to tour the Port Clinton tallships,” Debbie Hymore-Tester, co-chair of the PORTS committee. • “Last year Labor Day weekend we had 516 visitors. This year the number was 1700,” said Larry Fletcher of the Lake Erie Shores and Islands Welcome Center. • “On South Bass lodging was sold out Saturday and Sunday, and occupancy in Port Clinton was strong on the same days,” said Fletcher. “We are communicating with the businesses in the area and will be generating an economic impact report that we hope to have at the end of the month.” The general consensus was that the weekend’s crowds of visitors and locals alike were on good behavior and peacefully enjoyed the festivities of a once-in-a-lifetime celebration.

Tell Tales

Don’t give up the flags, replace them with PC power
Now that all of the celebration of the Battle of Lake Erie Bicentennial is finally over, somebody gave me a thought. Many certainly noticed the proliferation of “DON’T GIVE UP THE SHIP” flags flying throughout Port Clinton. How about we replace those flags with the red “PC” flags and fly them in the windows of all of the businesses in town! Cindy Bolte of Bolte Real Estate and Insurance told me that she would buy them. The idea is that when visitors come through town, they will see a lot of PC flags flying indicating a significant amount of community pride. Good idea???

I received a lot of comments about the photos of the Battle reenactment on the front page of last week’s Beacon. As you know, we are limited by space in the paper. We have unlimited space on our website, www.thebeacon.net. Our editor Donna Lueke indicated that the photo galleries online will remain up for a while. If you would like keep the Battle of Lake Erie in your memory forever and want to purchase copies of any of the photographs, just call the office at 419-732-2154. We will be selling 8’ x 10” prints for $8 each. Donna and Jasmine Cupp were on different boats taking pictures of the battle, and did an absolutely tremendous job.

End of Summer Landscape Sale!!! Public invited to view Port Clinton Lighthouse restoration
4967 East Muggy Road, Port Clinton www.TNTHortPro.com
The Port Clinton Lighthouse Conservancy will host an open house at Brand’s Marina this coming weekend to afford the public an opportunity to view the progress of their effort to restore the Port Clinton lighthouse. The public showing will run from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Brand’s indoor facility located at the end of West Second Street. The security gate will be open for public access during those times. This will be the first official public showing of the 117-year-old lighthouse since the historic structure was removed from the Portage River West Pier in 1952 and placed on private property at what was then Jeremy’s Marina. Volunteers with the Conservancy, a local non-profit organization, began restoring the old lighthouse about two years ago. The Conservancy received tentative approval from the city last week to place the restored lighthouse in the Water Works Park north of the Derby

Pond. “We hope to complete the restoration work this winter and move the lighthouse to the park sometime in the spring,” says Conservancy president Rich Norgard. “We are pleased to give the public an opportunity to view the lighthouse while it is being restored. Our restoration team, led by Bill Moon and Dr. John Smothers, has devoted hundreds of man-hours to see this project through to completion.” The lighthouse was erected in 1896 at the end of the west pier that juts out into the Portage River and for over 30 years guided ships safely into the river. The light was decommissioned in about 1927 and an automated electric light installed on the pier. In November 1952 the lighthouse structure was removed from the pier and taken to present day Brands’ Marina, where it has stood for over sixty years, a familiar sight to boaters moving up and down the Portage River.

Since this program was completely funded by donations, the overwhelming success was due to our local residents, businesses and organizations that donated funds such as: The Ottawa County Community Foundation Grant, Stensen Grant, Ottawa County Republican Women’s Club, Huntington Bank and the community donations. The Salvation Army Port Clinton Service Unit thanks those who have contributed funds, supplies and volunteer hours to this program. They have additional supplies and book bags available to anyone who is still in need of these items. For more information call 419-732-2769 and speak with Director Maureen Saponari.

Ohio Veterans Bonus for those who served
Ohio has a unique way of thanking these recent veterans and those who serve. It’s the Ohio Veterans Bonus, for service given during the times of the Persian Gulf War and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. But the Ohio Veterans Bonus won’t be around forever. The deadline for Persian Gulf War era veterans to apply is Dec. 31, 2013. Veterans of the Iraq War era have until Dec. 31, 2014, to apply. No deadline has been announced for veterans of the Afghanistan War era. The Ohio Veterans Bonus is open to veterans of the Persian Gulf War era as well as the eras of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, regardless of where they served. However, the amount available is higher to those who served directly in the war zones. It is also open to the next of kin of those who were killed in action or died of disease as a result of in-theater service. The Bonus is not subject to federal or state taxes, and can be used for any purpose. Specific criteria or award of the Ohio Veterans Bonus is service in the Armed Forces of more than 90 days active duty, not for training, during the periods of the Persian Gulf War and the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. For the Persian Gulf, the eligible period is from Aug. 2, 1990, through March 3, 1991; for Afghanistan, from Oct.

7, 2001, through a date to be determined by the President, and for Iraq, from March 19, 2003, through Dec. 31, 2011. Eligible veterans must have been Ohio residents at the time of their entry into the service, and must be Ohio residents currently. The bonus pays $100 a month to veterans who served in the Persian Gulf theater, or in the countries of Afghanistan or Iraq, up to a maximum of $1,000. For veterans who served elsewhere, the payment is $50 a month up to a $500 maximum. Veterans medically discharged due to injuries sustained in combat can receive $1,000, plus up to $500 for months of service elsewhere. Family members of those killed in action or who died from disease as a result of their in-theater service can receive a bonus of $5,000 plus whatever the service member was eligible for, up to a total of $6,500. Veterans needing more information or who want to apply can call the Ottawa County Veterans Service Office at 419-898-2089 or toll-free 800-610-8872, or visit the office at 8444 W State Route 163, Oak Harbor. The Ohio Veterans Bonus continues a tradition of bonuses to reward Ohio veterans that dates back to the Civil War; however, these other war bonuses are now closed.

‘Building Doctors’ will be making rounds in PC Sept. 26-27
Main Street Port Clinton and the Ohio Historic Preservation Office of the Ohio Historical Society will sponsor a Building Doctor Clinic for old-building owners in the  Port Clinton area on  Sept. 26-27.   The clinic features Building Doctors  Justin Cook and Scott McIntosh of the Ohio Historic Preservation Office. It begins with a free seminar on Thursday evening, Sept. 26, from 7-9 p.m. at the Commodore Perry Inn, 255 Lakeshore Dr., Port Clinton. Open to all old-building owners in the area, the seminar will feature guidelines for renovation projects and ways to solve some of the most common problems of buildings dating from 1800 to 1955. On Friday, Sept. 27, from  9 a.m.-2 p.m., the Building Doctors will visit pre-1955 buildings within five miles of Port Clinton, advising owners on specific technical or design problems by appointment. The ‘doctors’ examine all kinds of older buildings. Some of the things that typically call for an on-site examination include persistent peeling paint or flaking plaster, a wet basement, deteriorating masonry, and plans for remodeling, additions, or demolitions. Cook, history reviews manager for the Ohio Historic Preservation Office, has a bachelor’s degree in classics from the University of Pittsburgh and a master’s degree in historic preservation from the University of Vermont, with post-baccalaureate studies in history at the University of North Florida and urban and regional planning at the University of Florida. He reviews federally-assisted projects for effects on historic properties. McIntosh, technical preservation services coordinator for the preservation office, holds a bachelor’s degree in history and master’s degree in historic preservation from the University of Kentucky. He reviews applications for federal and state rehabilitation tax credits.   The seminar and on-site consultations are free with advance registration by  Sept. 19. To register, visit www. building-doctor.org or call 1-800-499-2470 or 614298-2000. For more information, contact  Main Street Port Clinton, 419734-5503 or [email protected]

Prescriptions from the Building Doctors:
1. Check your roof and attic or upper stories for leaks at least every six months. Look for separations, bulges, cracks, and signs of moisture. It’s important to check your roof regularly. A sound roof is the key to preventing many problems which can occur below. 2. Inspect your gutters and downspouts during a hard rain to see that they’re working properly. Keep them clean and free of leaves and obstructions which may clog them. Make sure water from downspouts is directed away from the foundation. 3. Open your basement windows in the dry season to let air circulate. Feel basement walls for dampness. A musty odor indicates a high moisture level in the basement. Check for proper ventilation and dehumidification. Be certain that air circulates freely and isn’t blocked by materials stored against the wall. 4. Look for loose or damaged siding. Note any areas of paint failure. Check gaps between boards. Gaps smaller than a quarter-inch will help ventilate the wall cavity; larger gaps may admit rainwater. 5. Caulk gaps where window and door frames meet masonry or wood openings to prevent water from entering wall cavities of frame buildings or masonry of bearing-wall structures. 6. Examine painted surfaces for signs of peeling, cracking and alligatoring. Look for clues to original painting techniques and colors. A common way to examine hidden layers of paint is to carefully sand a small area in a location where it would not have weathered or been in direct sunlight, exposing the individual layers. 7. Assess the condition of all exterior features, particularly those of significance, such as porches, brackets and other decorative trim.

The Toledo Symphony Brass Quintet fills Meadowbrook Marsh with music
In continuation with the Simple Gifts: Celebrating our Musical and Natural Roots project, the Toledo Symphony Brass Quintet performed at Meadowbrook Marsh in Marblehead Sunday Sep. 8, at 2 p.m. Before the performance, there was a guided nature walk by the Black Swamp Conservancy. The walk started at 1 p.m. and ended at 2 p.m. with the start of the Brass Quintet. During the walk guides educated guests about plants, birds and butterfly species that were found along the path at Meadowbrook Marsh. At the end of the trail the guides led the guests to the awaiting Brass Quintet. Blankets and chairs filled in the lawn as the quintet played in the beautiful, serene surroundings of Meadowbrook Marsh. For more information on the Toledo Symphony or the Toledo Symphony Brass Quintet visit www.toledosymphony.com. Art Gallery at Magruder Hospital to feature local artists
The Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council has partnered with Magruder Hospital to create an art gallery within the hospital which will display the creative pieces of various local artists. The “Healing Arts Gallery” was created with the intent of sharing the talents of local artists while giving patients, visitors and employees at Magruder a visual experience. “A hospital visit can be stressful, which is why hospitals nationwide have recognized the healing power of art and embraced the idea of a gallery to add comfort and beauty to the hospital experience,” said Elisabeth Brand, Director of Marketing and PR at Magruder. The mission of the Arts Council is to provide art and art related events to the community and to promote local artists. When the Arts Council approached the hospital about the gallery concept, it was a natural fit. “We are really excited to give local artists another place to display their pieces. I am not sure people realize how much talent we have here in the area,” said Carol Morgan, President of the Arts Council. “The majority of the art on display in the exhibits will be for sale,” she added. “The Healing Arts Gallery” will display artists for approximately 12 weeks in the hallway in front of the hospital’s imaging department, an area frequented by patients and visitors that provides lots of natural light. The first gallery exhibit features Marblehead Artist Patricia Rose. Her favorite subject, horses, is featured in a series of pastel drawings. “While we are starting with a smaller area of the hospital for the displays, it is something Magruder is willing to build upon in the future,” said Brand. There are two ways for local artists interested in applying for future gallery exhibits to get more information. Visit the Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council website at www.portclintonarts.org or stop by the local business and design shop, Keith A. Fleming, located at 132 E. 2nd Street in Port Clinton.

Little Free Library comes to Marblehead
In a “petite” opening, the Marblehead peninsula celebrates it’s first Little Free Library.  In a quiet little corner by a green swing with a peek of the lake sits a creation by Dave Follman.  For the love of his wife, Dave created this quiet place after his wife Sheila saw the website www.littlefreelibrary.org and fell in love with the concept of a series of little free libraries. “Transitions: The End of Life Sessions”
“The Elephant in the Room” is how the subject of dying is sometimes described. We all know that it’s there, but we don’t know how to talk about it. And, when it happens in our families, we struggle, sometimes more than we would need to if we had taken the time to prepare. By settling the matters of our world and making decisions ahead of time, we can create an opportunity to enter the end of our lives with greater awareness and freedom. To help start these important conversations, Firelands Presbyterian Church is offering a series of seven sessions on a variety of topics having to do with end-of-life issues. All sessions are free, open to the public, and feature outside speakers. They are scheduled from September 12th through October 24th, each Thursday evening at 7 p.m.in the church fellowship hall. “Plan to come to as many of them as you can,” says Pastor Jeanne Gay. “You’ll be glad that you did.” Firelands Presbyterian Church is located at 2626 East Harbor Road, (1/2 mile west of Wal-Mart). Please call the church office at 419.734.6211 for more information. The topic for this week is Making Legal and Medical Preparations

Waterworks Park
Such an amazing weekend with the Tall Ships coming to our area.  I give gratitude for the organizers and volunteers who helped make it a success. It was nice seeing out of town visitors walking through Waterworks Park.  I saw a couple looking at the Erie Dearie memorial sign, which is the former transom of Erie Dearie Dan’s boat. He was the developer of the Erie Dearie fishing lure and one of the captains responsible for bringing many people to our area for fishing in the 1970’s.   It was great to view people sitting on the benches in the park and beside the water fountain this weekend.   Children were playing on the play-ground and adults walking here and there.   Saturday morning I walked on the waterfront down near the pier and beach.  And from a positive perspective I thought how awesome it was that anyone, no matter economic stature, had the opportunity to see the ships.  Viewing the Lake near the pier I recognized native plants, that some may called “weeds” and I watched the sunrise in contemplation.  It came to me that if the development goes through, I may not be able to walk this beach again in solitude, and neither will the average citizen of Port Clinton.   It is obvious that our beautiful lakefront attracts many to our area.   That is why people are here.   Lake Erie is the reason that people came to this region so many years ago.   It is the most valuable asset of Port Clinton. If we could be intelligent and not linear thinkers we would consider enhancing its beauty in a natural way.  We would understand that positive change is the key and it is for the good of all people.   It is not for the few who tell us that this development will bring economic stability. These people may be blinded by the glitter of their own possible economic growth, under the pure guise of aiding our community.   I think the speculated development that is now being negotiated needs to be re-evaluated before it is too late. Look at the results of one event on our lakeshore with nothing but a tent, and how it benefited everyone!    We can do this as a community and we don’t need condos or a hotel on the  waterfront park.  This park was donated to the people of Port Clinton as a whole for their usage.     I question why a developer is not interested in helping restore downtown buildings if unable to build on our waterfront?    There are alternative ideas that do not include a building directly on the lake obstructing our view and public access.   I do not feel that the speculated Conference Hotel and Condo development on our waterfront is the answer, especially when there are many suitable alternative and vacant locations in the area for these types of buildings.   Our families only have a short season to glean the benefits of our beautiful lake and the tourism it promotes.   If we utilize it to its fullest we can change the direction.   Look what happened this past weekend?  Events are one of the keys to economic growth of the downtown area.   It would be wise to have more events.  More of us need to become involved and not orchestrate from a couch or a bar stool. And it is important that we are totally honest.  Telling half truths or flip flopping is still a lie.   We have the power to rally as a community and become an example to all.  We have the ability to make our community beautiful, sustainable and  economically  successful   without destroying Waterworks Park.   Lets begin to become aware and talk to one another.   Become informed and involved in our community.   It could move us forward as a community and save our city and our Waterworks Park from lakefront development. Thank you,  Linda Green How soon we forget. We now see a replay of 2007 on the Waterworks Park issue. The people who oppose any development and insist that the citizens should decide were already accommodated 6 years ago.  The issue of rezoning the park to permit the development was on the ballot November 6, 2007.   Those in favor had their say and, among many others, were supported by the opinion of three former mayors: myself, John Fritz, and Jeanne Huskey. The opposition was organized by the same C.O.R.D. group that continues to oppose it as if they have forgotten that the people spoke to them that November and supported the change to allow the development.  Three sentences concluding the former mayors’ letter of support at that time still ring true: “We also share a concern that a large number of our citizens do not realize how critical Port Clinton’s situation is.  Things absolutely must be turned around very soon or we will continue to be a dying community. When we pass the point where investors and developers no longer feel there is opportunity in Port Clinton, we will have reached the point of no return, and the hopes for our City to thrive again will be extinguished.” The people spoke then and said “Yes”, so now it is time to support our city leaders. Let’s move on! Lockwood Zeis Mayor, 1968-1971

Rossford pulls away from Port Clinton, 45-21
BY YANEEK SMITH At halftime, things were looking pretty good for the Port Clinton Redskins. Port Clinton was leading Rossford by two and wide receiver Nathan Stubblefield was the best player on the field, giving the Bulldogs fits. But in the third quarter, Rossford (2-0) took control, outscoring the ‘Skins by 16 points to win, 45-28. The Bulldogs took the lead for good early in the period when quarterback Kyle Sherman scored on a four-yard run to make it 20-14. Running back Eric Davis later scored on a five-yard run and Dylan Losiewicz caught a 31-yard touchdown from Sherman. In the third quarter, Rossford outscored Port Clinton, 23-7, after trailing 14-12 at the half. “We didn’t play well tonight,” said Rossford head coach Todd Drusback, “but we found a way to win. We’ll need to play better in our next game.” With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 2-0 and the ‘Skins fall to 0-2. Despite being on the losing side, Stubblefield was magnificent, catching 10 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown and returning a kickoff 92 yards for a score. He also converted on all four of his extrapoint attempts. Quarterback Brandon Moore had the other two touchdowns for the ‘Skins, scoring on two runs (1, 5). Port Clinton took a 7-0 lead on a oneyard run by Moore in the first quarter. The score was set up by a muffed Rossford punt that was recovered by Tristan Mallory. Moore connected with wide receiver Noah Cross to convert a third down to keep the drive alive. Following a 10-yard touchdown by Davis that cut the deficit to 7-6, Stubblefield ran the kickoff back 92 yards to push the lead to 14-6. Davis would later score on a one-yard run to cut the deficit to 14-12 going into the half. Moore finished the night with 193 yards passing and had 37 yards rushing. Despite losing their second game, there is reason for the ‘Skins to be optimistic. They played much better this time around and showed some signs of promise after losing to Woodmore, 55-7, in Week 1. This Friday, the ‘Skins host Genoa (20), which defeated Oak Harbor, 63-7, last week. The Comets have made it to the postseason in each of the last six years, going 9-6 during that span as they’ve established themselves as one of the state’s premiere programs. Though it’s early, there’s good reason to believe that this will be one of Genoa’s best teams. Last season, the Comets beat Port Clinton, 49-7. In fact, Genoa has won the last eight meetings in the series, all by convincing margins.

WARNING

SPORTS
BY YANEEK SMITH Casey Gose was a one-man wrecking crew for the Genoa Comets in their win over the Oak Harbor Rockets last Friday. The senior scored four touchdowns on the night, one rushing, one receiving, one on a punt return and the other on a kickoff return to lead Genoa to a 63-7 victory over Oak Harbor to improve to 2-0 on the season. In all Gose was responsible for 247 yards of total offense. He returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown on the game’s fifth play to give the Comets a 7-0 lead with 9:51 remaining in the first quarter. Gose also returned a kickoff 78 yards for a score, caught a 48-yard touchdown pass from Logan Scott and ran another one in from 12 yards out to account for his four scores. “Casey Gose is a special talent,” Genoa head coach Tim Spiess said. “He’s the best return man I’ve coached. I’ve coached some great ones, but he’s No. 1. Our special teams have always been the difference maker. We spend 30 minutes each day on nothing but special teams.” Kicker Cody Pickard was instrumental in helping to set up the Genoa defense, often pinning the Rockets (1-0) deep in their own territory and actually notching a few touchbacks. And when Gose got his hands on the ball, either on punts or kick returns, his blockers set him up nicely.

SPECIAL FIRING NOTICE 2013

Gose’s 4 TDs lead Genoa to big win
“Our blocks were phenomenal (tonight),” Gose said. “Our blocking is great.” He was also glad to be part of the first group of Comets to win six straight in the Celestial Bowl series. “It feels great because it’s the first time Genoa has even done that,” he said. “It’s great to make some history.” Genoa controlled the game throughout, taking a 7-0 lead on Gose’s punt return and then pushing the lead to 14-0 at the 7:15 mark when Scott ran it in from two yards out. Ryan Espinoza scored from 14 yards out with 3:07 to play and Gose scored on a 12-yard run with 21 seconds remaining to make it 28-0 after one quarter. On the ground, senior David Nutter led the way, rushing 23 times for 154 yards and a touchdown and Jake Wojciechowski had five carries for 91 yards and two scores. Scott did a nice job throwing the ball, connecting on all five of his passes for 108 yards and a touchdown. Oak Harbor’s lone touchdown came midway thru the fourth quarter when Kalob Vargas ran it in from three yards out. Andrew Heberling had nine carries for 50 yards and Cobi Brough carried the ball seven times for 41 yards to help pace the Rockets. This Friday, Oak Harbor travels to Pemberville to face Eastwood. The Eagles, who are 1-1 on the year, lost a hardfought contest to Clyde, 17-13, last week, but defeated powerhouse Patrick Henry, 40-21, in Week 1.

Danbury loses in heartbreaking fashion to Holgate
BY YANEEK SMITH Photos (see captions on photo file) Murphy’s Law states that, “Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.” Had Murphy’s Law not gone into effect during the second half of their game against the Holgate Tigers last Friday, the Danbury Lakers would be 2-0. After losing to Holgate last season, Danbury appeared to be on its way to extracting revenge on their opponent, scoring three touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 15-point lead into the half. However, things took a turn for the worse in the second half as the Tigers scored 20 points to steal the victory, 32-27. “It was a perfect storm against us,” said Danbury head coach Bryan Dudash. “They converted four fourth downs, two of which were over 13 yards. We could never make a play on defense. They definitely scared us out in space.” In the third quarter, Holgate running back Brock Thiesen scored two touchdowns before adding another with 6:06 remaining in the final period to put the Tigers ahead for good. In addition to struggling on defense in the second half, the Lakers failed to score any points, something that ultimately did them in. “We felt good at halftime about us being able to run our offensive game plan,” Dudash said. “We were in complete control offensively in the first half. We made mistakes on about every offensive play in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.” Jimmy Chamberlain led the Lakers (1-1), catching six passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns and carrying the ball four times for 26 yards and a score. Running back Cody

Jim Chamberlin tackling Holgate’s Chance Gray. Photo by John Kozak German had 14 carries for 116 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 19 yards. Quarterback Seth Vargo had another good game, connecting on 10-of-17 passes for 178, two touchdowns and an interception. This week, the Lakers host St. Mary CC out of the Sandusky Bay Conference. The Panthers, who went 2-8 last year, trounced Danbury, 56-0, last season. Their record is somewhat deceiving considering that they play in a league with schools that are much bigger than them. With a win, the Lakers could set themselves up nicely heading into conference play. The Toledo Area Athletic Conference, normally a league that features two or three elite teams, might be experiencing a bit of a down year, something that could give Danbury a chance to make a run this season.

Captain Juls’ Fishing Report

Even though the first day of fall doesn’t officially start until Sept. 22, the weather we are experiencing this week makes it feel like it has already arrived. The reports of walleye in certain areas of the lake right now would confirm that it is indeed an early fall. I just hope that winter delays itself long enough for an extraordinary extended fall bite. Typically, the nomadic fish will start moving from the east back to the western basin for the cold season, where they will feed and fatten up for the winter months below the ice before they begin staging up for the spawn in late March to mid-April. This is the time of year when people flock to the area from all over the country to sample what Lake Erie fishing has to offer. Many an angler’s dream has come true with a trophy sized walleye that they have always dreamed of catching one day. They might fish for a lifetime on other bodies of water throughout the country and never get one over ten pounds, but fishing in the fall on Lake Erie, those dreams can become a reality multiple times over. Reports of walleye are still being taken on the Canadian line, both above and below it, and east of Middle Island. Crawler har-

Fall is in the Air

nesses, spoons, and crankbaits are all working effectively. Choose your weapon and go catch some fish! Recently, what surprised me the most were reports of quick limits of walleye being taken in the shallows (24-30’ of water) between the Huron River and Cedar Point, or to the Vermilion River. These are usually very good fall spots to fish for quick limits of decent sized “eater” walleye, but it’s usually a little later in the month when they show up. I usually run the harnesses program until the water temps hit 50 degrees, and then I switch over to my favorite crankbaits, Reef Runners, Deep Husky Jerks, Tail Dancers and Rogues. Looks like with this weather forecast it won’t’ be too long before I can switch over to just crankbaits for the rest of the season. That’s always something I look forward to, because I get tired of the white perch, white bass, and sheephead stealing my expensive crawlers over and over again, something I’m sure many of you can relate to. Captain Juls can be contacted by email at [email protected], or by phone at 419835-7347. Her website address is www.julswalleyefishingadventures.com.

Oak Harbor’s new docks
The newly installed docks in downtown Oak Harbor on the Portage River are already being put to good use. There were two boats docked up this past weekend visiting downtown. The floating docks are just one piece of the recent improvements in downtown Oak Harbor that have been accomplished through the Downtown Revitalization Committee. Future downtown and riverfront developments are being planned during the committees’ bi-weekly meetings. The goal is to complete the projects without using taxpayer dollars, and donations have funded the projects thus far. The committee is conducting a survey of the community and those will be available at various locations throughout Oak Harbor in the coming weeks. For more information, contact committee chairman Mike Shadoan at 419-7066034.

“Take Local Home” campaign at Bassett’s Market
BY DONNA LUEKE When you walk into Bassett’s Market in Port Clinton, the first displays are of local produce. For 80 years Bassett’s Markets have been partnering with Moore’s Orchards near Oak Harbor to bring their customers “the best peaches in the world”, according to owner Mike Bassett. Quinstock Farms of Catawba provide apricots and strawberry delicious apples, and a new line of fresh salsa. Rimelsbach Farms of Fremont provide sweet corn, peppers and fresh melons. Thompson from Catawba supplies tomatoes and flowers. The commitment to using local suppliers is something that Bassett’s has been doing for decades. “We try to be as local as possible, “said Bassett. “Homegrown is what our customers want.” Produce manager Terry Galway agreed, “We use signs as much as possible” to let customers know that they are buying fresh and local. Locavores are those who try as much as possible to buy and consume food from no further than 100 miles away, believing that fresh and local is not only a benefit from a taste and nutritional standpoint, but also benefits the local economy and the environment in less fuel consumption. Moving through the store, Bassett pointed out items in each section from local sources. In the deli, salads, soups and other prepared items are made in the store. There are deli meats from Tank’s Meats in Elmore, and other specialty deli items from Tiger Bakery in Toledo. In the bakery, in addition to breads and cakes baked in the store, on Saturdays bagels are brought in from Barry’s Bagels in Toledo. In the cheese department, Ohiomade Walnut Creek cheeses are featured. The meat department has Ohio-raised turkeys from Cooper Farms and Daisyfield Pork from Sandusky and Gerber chicken from Hebron. There is premium chicken paprikash from Amherst and local eggs from Cindy Jacoby. The dairy department showcases Toft’s milk products from Sandusky and glass bottled milk from Hartzler. Toft’s ice cream is prominently marketed in the frozen food department. Bassett’s extensive wine department features Lonz and Heineman wines and a broad selection of beer comes from Great Lakes Brewery in Cleveland. Bassett’s Market is the number one ice seller in Ohio for Luc Ice of Sandusky. In the grocery aisles are featured Catawba Bob’s sauces and mixes, Tony Packo’s pickles, Pure Ohio maple syrup, and a new item, Sinful Toffee from Perrysburg, all local products. Using local suppliers, whether from a business or nutritional standpoint, seems to be a benefit for all concerned, and is a long-term and an ongoing commitment at Bassett’s Market.
