MESSAGE FROM MRS. KENNAUGH
Thank you to everyone who came in for parent-teacher
conferences! We appreciate you partnering with us to
ensure your child’s success.
Rather than have a concert in the high school auditorium
in December, we are moving the event to February 25th
and 26th. As in the past, we will split our second through
sixth graders up into two groups, with half performing on
the 25th and the other half performing on the 26th. Look
for further information to come at a later date, but here are
the planned performance nights for each second through
sixth grade classroom:

2/26/15 (Thursday)

Our state has seen some changes with regards to
assessment procedures. What was once referred to
as MEAP (Michigan Education Assessment
Program) is now being called M-STEP (Michigan
Student Test of Educational Progress). Unlike the
MEAP that was a paper-pencil assessment given in
the fall, the new M-STEP is a computerized
assessment that will be given in the spring of each
year for students in third through eighth grade. All
students will continue to be tested in reading and
mathematics, with some grades also being tested in
science or social studies. Look for further
information about M-STEP as the testing window
approaches.
With the state’s assessment changes, GLPS is also
changing some of our assessment practices. So that
students are not overwhelmed with testing in the
spring, our schools will be administering the
NWEA assessment in the fall and winter; we are
discontinuing the spring NWEA assessment.
As always, if you have any questions or would like
to discuss any concerns, please contact me.

NO NEWSLETTER NEXT WEEK!
Due to the shortened holiday week, we will not
have a newsletter. The Beagle staff wishes all
of our students and families a very safe and
Happy Thanksgiving recess.

Teaching your Kids to be Thankful
Thanksgiving is the perfect time to teach your kids
about being thankful. Here are some ideas to teach your
children how to appreciate the blessings in their lives.
Thankful Paper Chain
One way to remind your children of their blessings is to
create a paper chain. This is similar to a regular paper
chain – where you cut strips of paper and connect them
together as loops, but there’s one difference. You write on
the strips of paper before you connect them. Write the
things you are thankful for with your children. For
instance, “Grandma plays games with me” or “My teacher
is nice.” The fun part of this activity is to make the chain
as long as possible – showing all your blessings. If you’d
like to keep this up during Christmas, just use red, green
and white paper.
Thanksgiving Tree
This is another take on the idea
above and works really well if you
have several kids in the family.
Have each child trace their hand
on yellow, red, or brown
construction paper. Cut out the
hand shapes and write (or have the
child write) what they are thankful
for on the hand shape. Cut a tree
trunk shape out of brown
construction paper. Glue it on a large piece of poster
board. Let the kids add their hand shapes as leaves above
the tree trunk, turning it into a beautiful fall colored tree.
Thankful Book
This idea is similar to the others, except it’s more of a
keepsake. Purchase a photo album or scrapbook kit and
make a “blessings” theme. Add photos of loved ones,
including stories about why they are special to you.
Also, include pages of your favorite foods, favorite
stories, favorite movies and all the other things that
make you happy. Any time your kids feel down, you can
open your blessing book to see all the reasons you have
to be happy – and thankful for the blessings in your life.

classroom that collects the most Box Tops will
win hot chocolate and cookies!
Look in Friday Folders for “Five Below” flyers.

will be donated to our PTO.
SHOPPING TOUR TOY COLLECTION
There are many young children in Grand Ledge
who do not know the joy of
receiving presents at the holidays.
Beagle would like to bring some
joy to these girls and boys by
collecting toys for the Grand
Ledge Shopping Tour to distribute at their annual
Holiday Party. Needy children in grades K-5th will
each receive a new toy from Santa at the party.
This would be a wonderful opportunity for the
whole family to get involved in the spirit of giving
to those less fortunate. You and/or your children
may bring NEW UN-WRAPPED toys to school
and place them in the tub in the office through
December 9. Thank You!
