Benguet State University College of Teacher Education SECONDARY LABORATORY SCHOOL La Trinidad, Benguet COURSE SYLLABUS School Year 2012-2013 Course Code: ENGLISH I Course Title: Basic Grammar for English Learners Course Description: The course is specifically designed for High School Freshmen students to enhance their knowledge on English Grammar and develop their proficiency on content application to real-life language situations. Materials to be utilized are arranged to maximize growth and development of students for oral and written communication. Lecture: 5 hours per week Time Duration: 206 hours Credit: 1.5 units Pre-requisite: Students should have passed the school’s Entrance Examination. I.COURSE OBJECTIVES A. General Objectives At the end of the school year, the students shall be able to: 1) Outline the English Language System based on the Eight Parts of Speech with definition and enumeration of functions. 2) Organize thoughts and ideas in oral and written language exercises using the English Language System. 3) Appreciate the importance of using correct grammar in English communication. B. Specific Objectives At the end of the school year, the students shall be able to: 1) Identify grammatical structures of English based on learned concepts and language exercises with 95% accuracy. 2) Enumerate functions of these identified grammatical structures of English using oral and written language exercises. 3) Construct diagrams on the development sentences from words, words from letters based on grammatical rules in forming words and sentences. 4) Compose effective essays, short stories, and speeches with 95% correct grammar. 5) Discuss in class comments and judgments on grammatical structures learned. 6) Values the content of lesson by applying learned schema in oral and written exercises. II.COURSE REQUIREMENTS A. Attends class regularly. B. Participates in class discussion. C. Recites in class. D. Submits written exercises and projects. E. Takes required Unit Exams and Periodical Exams. F. Reports assigned topics to class.

The materials to be utilized are arranged to develop the students’ interest in reading and enhance comprehension abilities. Lecture: 5 hours per week Time Duration: 206 hours Credit: 1.5 units Pre-requisite: Students should have passed the school’s Entrance Examination. I.COURSE OBJECTIVES A. General Objectives At the end of the school year, the students shall be able to: 1) Identify the epics learned and its country of origin. 2) Summarize the epics learned through diagrams and semantic designs. 3) Relate personal experiences to values learned from each epic. B. Specific Objectives At the end of the school year, the students shall be able to: 1) Paraphrase a chapter of an epic with 95% accuracy in its meaning and plot substance for easier understanding. 2) Compare independently the learning insights and plot of two or more epics in relevance to culture differences, philosophy and values. 3) Adapt to epic roles effectively in role plays or dramatization of characters. 4) Produce plays based on epic plots in contemporary manner with 95% accuracy and 100% creativity given limited time for practice and preparation. 5) Evaluate independently the values and learning insights of epics based on personal perceptions and experiences through essays and oral recitations. 6) Value the lessons learned from the epics in relation to own actions, philosophy and words spoken or written.
