BIG DATA & CLOUD
Big data is a general term used to describe the voluminous amount of unstructured and semistructured data a company creates -- data that would take too much time and cost too much money to load into a relational database for analysis. Although Big data doesn't refer to any specific quantity, it is often used when speaking about petabytes and exabytes of data. A primary goal for looking at big data is to discover repeatable business patterns. It’s generally accepted that unstructured data, most of it located in text files, accounts for at least 80% of an organization’s data. If left unmanaged, the sheer volume of unstructured data that’s generated each year within an enterprise can be costly in terms of storage. Unmanaged data can also pose a liability if information cannot be located in the event of compliance audit or lawsuit. Big data analytics is often associated with “cloud computing” because the analysis of large data sets in real time requires a framework to distribute the work among tens, hundreds or even thousands of computers. Big Data spans three dimensions: Volume, Velocity and Variety
  

Volume – Big data comes in one size: large. Enterprises are awash with data, easily amassing terabytes and even petabytes of information. Velocity – Often time-sensitive, big data must be used as it is streaming in to the enterprise in order to maximize its value to the business. Variety – Big data extends beyond structured data, including unstructured data of all varieties: text, audio, video, click streams, log files and more. Big data is an opportunity to find insight in new and emerging types of data, to make your business more agile, and to answer questions that, in the past, were beyond reach. Until now, there was no practical way to harvest this opportunity. Today, IBM’s platform for big data uses technologies like “Hadoop” to open the door to a world of possibilities. Thus, taking “Big Data” & “Cloud Computing" out of the “buzz” realm and placing it firmly in the “evolutionary technology” realm, we created this meet-up to help, educate and de-mystify these technologies to businesses, professionals and individuals.
