THE POSITION Under general supervision, to perform safety tests, and preventative maintenance, and install, inspect, calibrate, perform minor repairs on electronic, diagnostic and therapeutic biomedical equipment. TYPICAL TASKS Performs preventive maintenance and electrical safety inspections; Makes electronic, electrical and mechanical repairs, modifications and calibrations on all classes of electronic and biomedical equipment including ECG, respiration monitors, defibrillators, IV pumps, electrosurgical units, ventilators, infant incubators, radiant warmers, patient monitoring system, non-invasive blood pressure units and other electronic equipment such as surveillance and card access systems; Initiates purchase requests for repair parts and accessories; Receives parts, accessories, and maintains repair parts inventory; Maintains accurate maintenance history records; May make recommendations on the purchase and disposition of medical equipment;

May assist in training nurses, therapists, and doctors on subjects such as electrical safety, proper use of electronic and computerized medical equipment; Performs related duties as required. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Any combination of education, training, and experience, which could produce the following knowledge and abilities. Experience Note: The knowledge and abilities required to perform this function are typically acquired through training and experience equivalent to the following: Possession of an Associate’s degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology from an accredited college, OR Two (2) years of full time or equivalent experience in the installation, repair and maintenance or manufacturing of electronic equipment, one (1) of which must have been in a health care environment. Knowledge of: Basic electrical and electronic theory including discreet components, integrated circuits, micro-processors, and medical equipment; General knowledge of pneumatics and hydraulics; Hazards and applicable safety standards and performance requirements related to biomedical instrumentation; Calibration, adjustments, and proper grounding of equipment; Basic databases and software languages; Basic concepts of electronic computer systems; General knowledge of hospital procedures as related to electronic and biomedical equipment. Ability to: Interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, operational specifications and illustrative drawings; Analyze and correct malfunctions in electronic instrumentation; Keep accurate maintenance and inventory records; Lift and/or move moderately heavy and/or bulky equipment and objects; Establish effective working relationships with other medical technicians, nursing and medical staff, hospital management, sales and vendor service representatives. INFORMATION ON PERS CONTRIBUTION: For new members, salaries above a limitation imposed by federal law (that limit per IRS is $113,700 for 2013): (1) neither the County nor the employee makes contributions to PERS on the portion of salary that exceeds the limit, and (2) the portion of the salary that exceeds the limit is not used by PERS to calculate the retirement benefit.
