Rudolf Steiner College

A Center for Biodynamic Education
Now in its 33rd year, Rudolf Steiner College is one of America’s leading centers for Waldorf Teacher training and the study of anthroposophy, a path of human development initiated by Rudolf Steiner. An important part of the College’s mission is bringing Rudolf Steiner’s healing impulses to individuals, communities, and the earth. Located in Fair Oaks, California, near Sacramento, Rudolf Steiner College offers a wide range of educational options, all held on a beautiful campus with anthroposophically designed classrooms, dorm housing, a bookstore, and a biodynamic farm and ornamental gardens.

Biodynamic Education at Rudolf Steiner College

Biodynamics
Biodynamics is an agricultural method developed from indications given in 1924 by Rudolf Steiner in a series of lectures. These indications laid the foundation for a new way of thinking about the relationship of the Earth and the formative forces of Nature. Biodynamics became the first organized organic approach to farming. The ideal is for a Biodynamic farm to be a self-sufficient organism, enlivened by the biodynamic practitioner through the use of compost and spray preparations in cooperation with natural rhythms.

At Rudolf Steiner College, biodynamics is practiced and taught, bringing health and wholeness to the land and the community. It offers participants a spiritual path that takes them beyond physical labor into a deeper, more intimate connection with the earth, the cosmos, and ultimately themselves. Rudolf Steiner College, a center of Biodynamic Education, proudly offers a comprehensive selection of biodynamic workshops, events, evening study groups, a farm apprenticeship program, farm visits for school children, garden tours, and volunteer days. Details and a registration form are included in this brochure. Registration is also available online at www.steinercollege.edu (click on Programs/ Biodynamics).

The Farm and Gardens

At the heart of Rudolf Steiner College sits Raphael Garden, our 3-acre, Demeter-certified biodynamic farm. Founded in 1987, the farm supports seasonal fruit, year-round vegetables, a large seed saving operation, farm animals and natural beekeeping, in a beautiful, serene, and very productive setting. A model of biodynamics in action, the farm provides for most of its needs from within the farm individuality. Soil fertility is maintained by composted garden and kitchen waste, animal manure, cover crops and crop rotations. Biodynamic compost and spray preparations, made on the farm or in cooperation with other local farms, are used rhythmically throughout the seasons to enhance life forces. Most seeds for next season’s crops are grown right on the farm. Enough seeds are produced to sell nationwide, and they are in particular demand by local growers due to their enhanced adaptability to the area. The farm is supported by the 40+ shareholders of the Raphael Garden CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). The 13-acre College landscape is also maintained as a unique individuality through the use of biodynamic preparations and principles. Ornamental gardens and the flow form garden, which sits like a jewel at the heart of the farm, offer sanctuary for pollinators and an atmosphere conducive to the College mission of transformative education and artistic renewal.

Learn about cosmic influences that affect plants and how planting calendars help you see plants in relationship to cosmic events, increasing awareness of the land’s cosmic surroundings. with Harald Hoven

Workshop Fees
Saturday Sessions 9:00am-5:00pm Regular: $95 Students/Seniors: $75 Advanced Intensive Regular: $390 Students/Seniors: $305 Entire Series (including Advanced Intensive) Regular: $895 Students/Seniors: $710

Session 7: Spring! Plant Propagation, Weed Management
April 17, 2010

Session 1: Soil: The Foundation of Life

September 12, 2009

We begin the series with an introduction to Biodynamics and the philosophy out of which it arose. We’ll explore soil as the foundation of all garden and farm work, including in-depth observations of different soil types and conditions, and end with preparation of a bed for planting. (Bring samples of your own soil!) with Harald Hoven, Cynthia Hoven, Laura Liska

Session 2: Biodynamic Preparations

October 17, 2009

The BD preps are Rudolf Steiner’s special contribution to agriculture. Fermented herbs create rich compost to enliven the soil. Fermented cow manure and crystals are sprayed on soil and plants to stimulate root growth and aid plant maturation. We will make and apply “horn manure” preparation (BD #500) in the garden and learn about the balancing action of the spray preps. with Harald Hoven

Techniques for preparing soil to plant or transplant summer crops will be demonstrated. Methods of propagating annuals and perennials will also be demonstrated, including direct sowing, use of greenhouses or cold frames, pricking out, and propagation through cuttings, layering and divisions. We’ll explore strategies and biodynamic methods for dealing with another Spring feature: quicklyappearing weeds. Additionally, last year’s preparations will be dug up. with Harald Hoven and David Basile

Session 8: Pests, Insects, Beneficials, and Beekeeping
May 8, 2010
The garden and farm can’t exist without insects, but when the natural balance is disturbed, pests of all sorts creep in. From managing pests to attracting beneficials, this workshop looks at insect identification, biodynamic methods of pest control, pollinator habitat, and care of the honeybee. with Harald Hoven and David Basile

Session 3: Compost

November 14, 2009

Compost is the ideal recycler of all organic wastes, acquainting us with the mysteries of death, transformation and new life. Biodynamic preparations, used homeopathically in the compost pile, are important healing medicines for the depleted earth. Compost becomes the bearer of new life, improves any soil, and provides the highest quality fertility. You will learn the theory behind composting and practical skills for building compost piles for both large- and small-scale operations. with Harald Hoven

Session 4: Seed Saving

January 16, 2010

Weeklong Advanced Intensive
June 9-13, 2010
Culminating the year’s sessions, this week recapitulates and deepens the entire series’ experiences. It includes presentations on the self-enclosed farm organism, plant observations, theoretical discussions, hands on activities, and lectures and eurythmy based on the four kingdoms of nature. (The advanced intensive can be taken separately, with permission, by those who have some experience with biodynamics.) with Harald Hoven and Cynthia Hoven

The miracle of the seed is the form of the future it carries within. Instead of importing seeds, learn to save your own seed, a crucial part of creating a self-contained farm organism by encouraging varieties best suited for your environment. with Harald Hoven

Session 5: Tree Care and Animal Husbandry

February 13, 2010

Fruit trees and animals complete a farm or large garden. The tree is a special bearer of life, and provides bird and insect habitat, and shade. Learn to select appropriate fruit trees for your locale and how pruning helps trees respond with an abundance of fruit. Animals ensoul a farm or garden, bringing additional joy. Gain an understanding of their role in the “farm individuality” through their capacity to process plant matter, produce manure, and give us meat and other products. with Dan Crebbin

Natural Beekeeping: A Biodynamic Workshop Series
Workshop Fees
Saturday Sessions 9:00am-5:00pm Regular: $95 Students/Seniors: $75 Entire Series Regular: $225 Students/Seniors: $165 With David Basile. Sessions may be taken individually or as a series. Beginners and experts welcome. In 1923, Rudolf Steiner warned that if beekeepers manipulated the natural rhythms of the honeybee, she would face extinction within 80 to 100 years. As predicted, we are becoming aware of the problems facing the honeybee and the consequences of losing her. But while conventional beekeepers have faced loss and despair, biodynamic beekeepers have found their hives thriving and their practices succeeding. In this series, we study the honeybee from a biodynamic perspective, learning to keep bees naturally and respectfully.

Backyard Biodynamic Gardening Workshop Series
With David Basile. Sessions may be taken individually or as a series. Beginners and experts welcome. In this series we explore our relationship to nature, to ourselves, and to the spiritual world, as we learn the practical aspects of growing intensive, small-scale biodynamic gardens in the backyard or schoolyard.

Workshop Fees
Saturday Sessions 9:00am-5:00pm Regular: $95 Students/Seniors: $75 Entire Series Regular: $300 Students/Seniors: $220

Session 1: The Ground We Share
October 10, 2009
Out of the earth, living soils develop which nourish us with food and flowers. This class deepens our understanding of the soil and how to enliven it. We’ll learn bed preparation, techniques of doubleand single-digging, aspects of permaculture design, and biodynamic compost making.

Session 1: The Honeybee
March 20, 2010
By understanding the instinctual wisdom of the honeybee, we discover how to work with her. You’ll be introduced to the respectful ways of biodynamic beekeeping and get hands-on experience by assembling a hive, housing or catching a swarm, and inspecting a hive (weather depending). By day’s end you’ll be able to begin natural beekeeping in your school or garden.

Session 2: Plants: Our Daily Bread
November 7, 2009
Plants sustain life. Grains—wheat, rice, corn in particular—are the foundations of civilizations. We’ll study the significance of the plant kingdom within the whole of nature, as we learn the arts of sowing seeds, and growing, harvesting, preparing, and baking staple grains, our daily bread.

Session 2: Care of the Hive
May 22, 2010
The second workshop deepens our understanding of the honeybee and our skills in hive management according to Biodynamic standards. We’ll explore what the bees are doing and what we need to do in response. We might even harvest some goods of the hive (honey, pollen, wax).

Session 3: Soul of the Garden: Flowers and Animals January 30, 2010

Session 3: The Harvest
September 25, 2010
This final workshop prepares us to care for the honeybee year round. We’ll discuss what is required before and during winter, including hive size, ventilation, overwinter feeding, and preventing mites. We’ll finish by enjoying gifts of the hive as we taste the year’s honey and dip beeswax candles. Don’t miss our Alternative Hive Building workshop November 20-22. See details under Special Events.

Within the lure of a flower and the sting of the bee, the soul of the garden is expressed. This workshop introduces methods of meeting and working with this soul. Our studies grant us insight into raising healthy chickens, bees, and flowers in the landscape.

Session 4: The Role of Man in Nature February 27, 2010
As conscious stewards and designers, we overcome the destructive forces of materialism and rejuvenate our planet and ourselves. As we find our place in the world, nature adores us. In this final workshop, we’ll discuss garden design and planning and learn to apply the artistic, living technologies of biodynamics—the spray preparations.
