WINNERS
SWAC East, CIAA South, Virginia Union, St. Augustines, Livingstone, Shaw, Nor-
folk State, SC State, Bethune-Cookman, Fort Valley State and Jackson State.
• SWAC EAST DIVISION teams won all three of its games against West Division op-
ponents this week as Alcorn State humbled defending conference champ Southern, 56-16, and
Alabama State unceremoniously kicked Texas Southern from the unbeaten ranks, 38-3.
Jackson State got the other East over West win with a 33-30 win in overtime vs.
Arkansas-Pine Bluf.
One good note from the SWAC West, Grambling State moved to 2-0 and to the top of
the division standings with a 26-20 win over Prairie View A&M.
• CIAA South teams came away with a 4-2 advantage over their North Division coun-
terparts in games played last week. Two of the Souths wins and one from the North were of the
FANTASTIC FINISH variety.
• Te other winners came as a result of the Fantastic Finishes below.
FANTASTIC FINISHES
– Virginia Union - A touchdown pass from QB Kenneth Graham to WR Jussie York
of 37 yards with no time on the clock gave the Panthers a 27-26 win over Johnson C. Smith.
JCSU led 19-9 afere three quarters and 26-15 afer scoring midway thru the fourth period.
VUU scored 18 points in the fnal quarter
– Saint Augustines scored on a 66- yard pass from Cyril Davis to Claytin Lewis with
2:36 lef to pull out a 33-31 win over Chowan giving new head coach Michael Morand and the
Falcons their frst win of the season. Davis threw for 307 yards and 3 TDs in the win. Malik
Legettes interception sealed it for the Falcons with 1:18 to play.
– Livingstone placekicker Leonardo Manzo kicked thru a 38-yard feld goal with no
time lef on the clock to allow the Blue Bears to escape with a 33-31 win over Bowie State and
remain undefeated. Livingstone is now 4-0 while the teams theyve beaten are winless at 0-14.
Livingstone piled up 534 yards of total ofense led by QB Drew Powell who threw for 329 yards
(29-43-2) and four TDs. Wide receiver Jalen Hendricks continued his assault on the record
books by hauling in nine passes for 114 yards and a 6-yard TD. Hendricks also returned a punt
49 yards for a score with 49 seconds lef in the frst period. Hendricks leads all CIAA receivers
with 32 catches for 548 yards (137 ypg.) and 8 TDs.
– Shaw scored the fnal 19 points of the game, coming back from a 14-0 halfime
defcit and 17-6 defcit afer three quarters to knock of UNC-Pembroke, 20-17. Te fnal score
came with 4:56 to lay on a 1-yard run from QB Trey Jolston.
– Norfolk State quarterback Tyler Clark scored on a 1-yard run with 29 seconds lef to
give the Spartans their frst win of the season, 15-14 over Morgan State. Te Spartans drove 49
yards on 14 plays for the winning score.
– South Carolina State running back Jalen Scoot Simmons scored on a one-yard run
with 1:09 to play as the Bulldogs squeaked out a 17-10 win over Hampton. SCSU drove 80
yards on 11 plays for the winning score. Simmons accounted for 35 yards on the ground in the
game-winning drive.
– Bethune-Cookman QB Quentin Williams threw a 67-yard scoring pass to Frank
Brown with 1:25 lef to give the Wildcats a 34-27 lead vs. Florida Tech. But Florida Tech scored
on a 43-yard pass play with just 19 seconds lef. But FT QB Mark Catos PAT pass was inter-
cepted preserving the 34-33 win for the Cats.
– Fort Valley State placekicker Juan Serna sailed a 40-yard feld goal through the up-
rights with no time on the clock to give the Wildcats a thrilling 33-30 win over Benedict. Te
Cats winning drive covered 54 yards in seven plays and came afer Benedict had tied the score
at 30 with 1:32 lef.

– Jackson State scored on its possession of overtime on a 15-yard run by freshman QB
Lamontez Ivy to pull out a 33-30 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluf. UAPB had scored on its pos-
session on a 21-yard Tyler Strickland feld goal. UAPB QB Ben Anderson accounted for 382
yards of ofense in the game, 256 by air and 135 on the ground.

HOMECOMINGS
October is Homecoming month. Tough there are only three of the special dates on
the schedule this week, the bevy of HCs will be in the upcoming weeks.
Ten are scheduled for October 11, another 15 on October 18 and 13 on October 25.
