STAT CORNER
WHO ARE THE BEST PERFORMERS IN BLACK COLLEGE SPORTS

Here's how the black college football conference races are shaping up in as we head down the home stretch. SIAC Perhaps the most surprising team in black college football so far this season is Stillman. After a 2-8 2010 campaign, the Tigers from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, under new head coach Teddy Keaton, got a win over defending CIAA champ Shaw to open the season, came back to get key wins over SIAC West Division members Kentucky State and Tuskegee, before knocking off another West counterpart, Lane (28-17) this past Saturday to go 3-0 in the West, 4-1 overall. Only Miles (2-3, 0-0), who has yet to play a division game, has a chance to catch Keaton's Tigers and prevent them from clinching the division title and a spot in the new Nov. 12 SIAC conference championship game in Atlanta. Miles plays all its division games over the last four weeks of the regular season including an October 27th date at Stillman. But there is one big scheduling problem for Stillman making the Nov. 12 championship game. The Tigers have a Nov. 12 homecoming date vs. Concordia-Selma on their schedule. Keaton said before the season that the Tigers would not play in the championship game because of that game. The conference office said Tuesday it is considering its options but has not made a decision yet. Stay tuned. In the SIAC East, preseason favorite Albany State (4-1) also plays its four division games in the last four weeks of the regular season. James "Mike" White's Rams are 12th in the latest AFCA Div. II coaches poll. Morehouse (4-1, 2-0 E) meanwhile, currently leads the East after a dominating win over Clark Atlanta (2-3, 1-1) Thursday. A series of non-division conference games are on the schedule this week. Miles is at Clark Atlanta, Stillman hosts Benedict, Albany State is at Lane, Kentucky State hosts Fort Valley State and Tuskegee and Morehouse meet in Columbus, Ga. in the 76th Morehouse-Skegee Classic. CIAA The Winston-Salem State Rams under second-year head coach Connell Maynor are currently setting the pace in the CIAA. At 5-0 overall and atop the CIAA South at 4-0, the Rams are the only undefeated team in black college football and are up to 16th in the latest AFCA Div. II poll. The Rams are riding the powerful legs of 6-foot, 245-pound running back Nicholas Cooper who is averaging a black-college best 161.6 rushing yards per game. He has topped

the 100-yard mark in each of his five games and has gone over 200 yards in the last two. Quarterback Kameron Smith is also playing well completing 58.2% of his passes while throwing for 1,079 yards with 14 touchdown passes and only four interceptions. The Rams are averaging 45.6 points per game, sixth among Div. II programs, though they were held far below that number in their 28-10 homecoming win Saturday vs. division rival Johnson C. Smith (2-3, 1-1 S). This time a year ago, the Rams were undefeated at 6-0 and hosted Saint Augustine's. Maynor said his troops were a little too cocky after that great start and laid an egg, turning the ball over seven times in a 40-35 loss that knocked them from the unbeaten ranks. The Rams travel to Raleigh to face St. Aug's (2-3, 1-2 CIAA S) Saturday in a 1:30 p.m. start. For the last four years, Virginia State (2010), Bowie State (2009), Elizabeth City State (2008), Virginia Union (2007) have taken turns winning the CIAA North and this year it looks like the four will again duke it out for that division's spot in the Nov. 12 championship game. Thru games Saturday, Virginia Union (42, 2-1 N) and Virginia State (3-2, 2-1 N) and Elizabeth City State (3-2, 1-1 N) all have one loss while Bowie State (3-2, 2-2 N) has two close division losses over the last two weeks to VUU (32-29) and VSU (28-21, OT). Virginia Union hosts Elizabeth City State Saturday (1:30 p.m.) for the Panthers' homecoming. Virginia State is at Fayetteville State. Bowie State has an out-of-conference date at Fairmont State on Thursday. MEAC The new eight-game conference schedule to determine the MEAC champ could come back to haunt the league's higher-ups. Norfolk State's 17-14 win over three-time champ South Carolina State Saturday put Pete Adrian's Spartans (4-1, 2-0) in the driver's seat but it's early. North Carolina A&T (2-2, 1-0) is also undefeated in its only conference game but seven others have just one defeat including conference favorites SC State (2-1), BethuneCookman (1-1), Hampton (1-1) and Florida A&M (1-1), who've taken turns beating up on each other. Norfolk State is at Delaware State Saturday. Hampton is hosting Princeton out of the Ivy League. Bethune-Cookman is at NC A&T, SC State has homecoming vs. North Carolina Central, Florida A&M hosts Howard for homecoming and Morgan State hosts Savannah State for homecoming.
SWAC Alabama State (4-1, 4-0) is the hot team in

Alabama State senior wide receiver Nick Andrews became his school's all-time leader in touchdown receptions with the two he hauled in Saturday in a 31-23 win over Alcorn State. Andrews, who leads all black college receivers (See STAT CORNER) in receptions per game (8.2), and receiving yards per game (115.6), had TD receptions of 16 and 39 yards Saturday to bring his total this season to seven, and his career mark to 24, surpassing both Reggie Brown and Horace Brooks on the ASU all-time list who both had 23. Andrews is fourth in the nation among FCS players in receptions per game, receiving yards per game and total receiving yards. Lincoln of Pa. junior wideout Phillip Jean-Juste, right behind Andrews among black college players at 7.4 catches per game, is tied for seventh in Div. II. Kentucky State senior wideout Raphael Amey is tied for seventh in Div. II in receiving yards per game at 113.8 yards per contest and is third in punt returns (26.4). In addition to leading the black college ranks in rushing, Winston-Salem

State running back Nicholas Cooper's 161.6 yards per game is third best among all Div. II rushers. Cooper's nine touchdowns top the black college ranks and is tied for fifth in Div. II and his 180.8 all-purpose yards is tenth. Morehouse junior RB David Carter trails only Cooper in black college stats and is seventh in Div. II in rushing at 137.6 yards per game. Jackson State senior QB Casey Therriault leads the black college ranks passing for 305.2 yards per game, a number that's seventh nationally in the FCS. Jackson State junior DE Joseph Lebeau leads the FCS in sacks with 8 (1.6 per game) and is second in tackles for loss with 2.5 per game. Virginia State linebacker Jeremy Pruitt is fourth in Div. II on the total tackles list at 12.6 per game. Lincoln defensive lineman Tim Green is third in the nation in sacks at 1.7 per game and is fourth in tackles for loss at 2.4 per game.
