• BCSP No. 4 Virginia State - After trailing 17-14 at the half, CIAA
champion Virginia State pitched a second half shutout while scoring twice
to pull out a 28-17 win over LIU Post in a first round NCAA Div. II Super
Region I playoff home game. Both second-half scores came on 1-yard runs by
RB Kavon Bellamy who carried 29 times for 131 yards. The first came in the
third quarter at the end of a 10-play, 50-yard drive. The final score followed an
82-yard pass from QB Tarrian Ayres to Javon Smallwood that carried to the
LIU 1. Ayres opened the scoring in the first quarter with an 11-yard run following the Trojans taking over at the LIU 25 after an 18-yard punt. After LIU
tied the game at 7, VSU went up 14-7 on an 83-yard interception return TD
by Andre Rawls. VSU (10-2), seeded third in the region, won its tenth straight
game and will now travel to second-seed Bloomsburg next week in a second
round game.

• BCSP No. 10 MORGAN STATE - Morgan State gained a share of the
MEAC regular season title and later found itself with the league‘s automatic
berth to the FCS playoffs with a record-breaking 69-7 win over Delaware
State. QB Moses Skillon (16-24-0, 261 yards) set a new school record with
five TD passes and also rushed for a score in the rout. Andrew King (8 receptions, 116 yards) grabbed three scoring tosses of 10, 28 and 36 yards. RB Herb
Walker Jr. added 128 yards on 17 carries and scored on a 19-yard secondquarter run.
The Bears (7-5, 6-2) are one of five teams that share the MEAC regular season
title and get the playoff bid by virtue of having the best record (2-1) vs. the tied
teams. They will open the playoffs at Richmond (8-4) Saturday at 1 p.m.
• BCSP No. 10 NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL - The biggest
game in the MEAC Saturday matched first-place and co-BCSP No. 1 North
Carolina A&T at 6-1 in the conference against North Carolina Central, one
of four teams tied for second at 5-2, with the league title and automatic FCS
playoff berth hanging in the balance. NCCU and new head coach Jerry Mack,
pulled off the upset, keeping the Aggies from clinching the title outright or
grabbing the playoff bid, grabbing a piece of the title themselves and bringing
the other three teams into the picture with a hard-fought 21-14 win.
The Eagles surrendered an early touchdown on a 35-yard run by
A&T RB Tarik Cohen but came back to tie the game late in the second quarter on a 10-yard pass from QB Malcolm Bell to Jazz King. Taking the second
NC Central DE
half kickoff, the Eagles (7-5, 6-2), running a hurry-up offense, went 84 yards
Ty Brown
in six plays and scored on Andre Clarke‘s 3-yard TD run to go up 14-7. They
increased that lead to 21-7 after they recovered an A&T punt in Aggie territory. On the first play following the recovery, Bell ran 37 yards to paydirt giving the Eagles a 21-7 lead with 6:45 left in the third.
Cohen came back to cover 74 yards in three carries, one a big 67-yarder, and scored on a 3-yard run to
pull A&T within 21-14 late in the quarter
Midway thru the final quarter, A&T drove to the NCCU 20 where Cohen carried to the 3 but
fumbled when hit by Ty Brown with NCCUs Ryan Smith recovering at the 1. A&T also shares in the
MEAC title. In addition to the forced fumble, Brown had six tackles, four of them tackles for losses
including three sacks for -23 yards.
• BCSP No. 7 SOUTH CAROLINA STATE - QB Adrian Kollock ran for one score and
passed for another and RB Jalen Simmons ran for two scores as the Bulldogs (8-4, 6-2) claimed a
share of the MEAC title with a 30-20 home win vs. Norfolk State.
• BCSP No. 8 BETHUNE-COOKMAN - Back-up QB Larry Brihm
ran in a surprise two-point conversion from an unusual formation in overtime
allowing the Wildcats to knock off Florida A&M 18-17 and claim a share of
the MEAC regular season title. B-CU scored on Danny Dillards 1-yard run in
overtime to pull within 17-16 before the PAT. Lining up in a split formation,
the ball was hiked to Brihm who ran behind three blockers into the end zone
for the 2-pointer. FAMU had scored on its OT possession on a 13-yard pass
from Damien Fleming to Kareem Smith and a Chase Vanadore PAT kick. The
game ended in regulation with the teams tied at 10. B-CU PK Haden Hoggarth
tied it at 10 on a 32-yard field goal with 39 seconds left.

TUSKEGEE COMES UP SHORT
- SIAC champion Tuskegee fell behind 13-0 at the half and its second-half rally fell short in
falling at home to West Georgia, 20-17 in a first-round NCAA Div. II playoff game. The Tigers (9-3),
seeded third in Super Region II, got on the board in the third quarter on Michael Thorntons 2-yard
TD run and pulled within 13-10 when Troy Wylie kicked thru a 45-yard field goal early in the fourth
quarter. UWG went up 20-10 later in the period before Thornton scored on another 2-yard run with
2:37 to play. Tuskegee would get the ball one last time but could only advance to its own 30.
HOW DID MORGAN STATE WIN THE MEAC AUTOMATIC BID
- Five teams will serve as 2014 MEAC co-champions – North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, Morgan State, South Carolina State and Bethune-Cookman - but only Morgan State
will advance to the FCS postseason.
By virtue of its 2-1 record vs. the tied teams, Morgan State received the league‘s automatic
bid to the playoffs. Records of the others vs. the tied teams: NC Central 2-2, SC State 2-2, B-CU 1-1,
NC A&T 1-2. No other MEAC team was chosen for the 24-team playoff field announced Sunday
morning.
WHO‘S NUMBER ONE?
- This year might be the hardest in some time when it comes to picking the final black college football No. 1. There has been no consistently dominant team throughout the 2014 season.
Tennessee State was the preseason No. 1 but faltered early, losing to Alabama State in the
second week of the season en route to a disappointing 6-6 finish.
Bethune-Cookman moved up from No. 2 to the top spot and held it for a couple of weeks
before falling to Div. I Central Florida.
North Carolina A&T was next up with only a one-point loss to FCS No. 2 Coastal Carolina
on its ledger. After just one week however, A&T was blanked by South Carolina State, knocking the
Aggies from the top spot.
Alcorn State, with only a close to Div. I Southern Miss, supplanted the Aggies at No. 1. In
the following week, Grambling State stunned Alcorn State and B-CU retook the top spot.
The Wildcats stay this time was for only a week before they fell to South Carolina State
boosting CIAA power Winston-Salem State to the top spot.
The Rams tenuous stat at No. 1 ended when they fell to Virginia State in the CIAA title
game two weeks ago. And over the last two weeks, all the previous No. 1s lost. SC State fell to Morgan
State, A&T lost to NC Central, Grambling lost to Alabama State, Hampton beat Bethune-Cookman
and Jackson State beat Alcorn State.
So, as the commercial says, What‘s in your wallet?? Wrong question. Who‘s your No. 1?
GRAMBLING, SOUTHERN SWAC WEST SHOWDOW - SWAC
Southern and Grambling State, both 7-1 in the SWAC, meet at the New Orleans Super
Dome Saturday with the winner taking the West Division title and spot opposite Alcorn State in the
Dec. 6 SWAC Championship Game.
