GettinG around
As little as an hour away from the capital tucked up close to the Austrian
border, get ti ng to Bl ed by trai n, bus or car i s a rel ati vel y pai nl ess
experience.
By Plane
Jože Pučnik Airport is located approximately half way between Ljubljana and
Bled, and you can expect to pay around €45 for a taxi into town. Buses are
considerably cheaper (€5.40, with up to 19 connections on weekdays, but
virtually none on weekends) although you have to transfer in Kranj. There are
also up to six direct shuttles per day (€13). You can see the full schedules on
the airport’s website.
By bus
Buses leave every hour on the hour from the main bus station in Ljubljana
and take about 80 minutes to make the journey. Close to the town centre
at the northeastern tip of the lake, Bled’s dinky little bus station (avtobusno
postajališče) doesn’t offer much in the way of excitement beyond a kiosk
outside selling chocolate, soft drinks and cigarettes. Inside there’s a ticket
office and free toilets. To get the city centre, walk south along Svobode until
you hit the water.
By train
Bl ed has two train stations, but unfortunatel y nei ther is l ocated in the
centre of town. Over 20 trains a day from Lj ubl jana call at Lesce-Bl ed
station whi ch is on the main line but is several kil ometres away, mean-
ing you will ei ther have a l engthy hike or short bus ri de into town. The
other station is Bl ed-Jezero a coupl e kil ometres to the east, whi ch sees
up to fi ve trains a day from the capi tal, however you have to transfer at
Jeseni ce whi ch can l ead to a total j ourney time of al most 3 hours. Check
out Sl ovenia Rail ways’ incredi bl y user-fri endl y websi te for a compl ete

Arriving by car
Take the A2 highway northwest out of the city and follow the signs for Kranj.
Bled is well signposted once you’re out in the countryside. Journey time is
around 40 minuntes and it may get very crowded on Sundays in season at the
end of highway.

Church, Vila Bl ed and Radovlji ca’s magni fi centl y Baroque Hall. In addi tion to

important of i ts type in central Europe.
radovljiCa
Radovljica, or Radol’ca as it is more affectionately known, may not be as well-
known as nearby Bled, but it boasts a wide range of sights and activities, and
also offers something that its more famous neighbour simply can’t: peace,
quiet and a relaxing medieval town atmosphere. An administrative centre
since the 16th century, today the municipality of Radovljica comprises some
four dozen individual settlements and nearly 20,000 people. At the centre of
it all, and of most interest to tourists, is the picturesque old town situated on
a hilltop overlooking the Dežela plain to the east and the Sava river valley to
the west, with perfect views of the Julian Alps dominating the background in
seemingly all directions.
The compact city centre is a veritable open air museum of beautifully restored
buildings, narrow sloping streets and pleasant sidewalk cafés. The wider
area is home to countless hiking and cycling paths, some great accommoda-
tion options (including an award-winning campsite, a newly built tourist farm
and several old town guest houses), an airport offering scenic flights and the
Bled-Lesce train station. All of this, plus the genuinely welcoming spirit of its
residents, should lead many visitors to consider choosing Radol’ca as their
base for the region and making Bled a day trip, rather than vice versa.

historian and Radovljica’s most famous son, who among other achievements
penned the first Slovene comedy, the square is lined with historic buildings
dating from the 15th to 19th centuries and is a veritable open air museum of

Churches
Church of the Assumption B-3, Bled island. Sticking out of the island in
the middle of the lake, the Church of the Assumption has been much battered by
earthquakes and lightning over the centuries. Several churches have occupied this
prime location since one was first buil t here in the 12th century. The current incar-
nation is from the 17th century. Inside, the impressive al tar and the last surviving
frescoes from an earlier Gothic church are worth a look.
St. Martin’s Church D-2, A white neo-Gothic beauty erected in 1905, St.
Martin’s was designed by same architect who designed Vienna’s town hall, and
it shows in the sheer verticality of the building. The church is surrounded by the
walls which had to protect the earlier church from Ottoman incursions. The interior
has frescoes from the late 1930s.

on a cliff overlooking the lake and town, Bled Castle is the stuff of children’s
dreams. First mentioned in the year 1011, it is the officially the oldest castle in
Slovenia and will be celebrating its one thousand year anniversary with a series
of events throughout 2011. Built and added to haphazardly over the centuries,
nowadays the castle is a photogenic mash of styles. Of the many sights located
on the castle’s premises, you can visit a small but informative museum of the
region’s history from the first human settlements till the present day, a 16th
century chapel, the wine cellar, an herbal gallery, a recreated Gutenberg printing
press (that still sees heavy work printing souvenirs for visitors) and of course
a restaurant with breathtaking views of the lake below and mountains beyond.

areas hidden gems. Running for 1.6km along the river Radovna, the gorge

Cycling trips
Bled - Bohinj
Length: 55km/2hours
Difficulty: medium
Surface: asphal t
An old favourite, Bled to Bohinj, starts at the main road in Bled. Proceed with cau-
tion (Bled’s main thoroughfare can get pretty busy). The road is mostl y flat until
you are greeted with a 2km long slope (10% gradient) at the hamlet of Bitnje. You
will ride through several small sleepy villages (Jereka, Bohinjska Češnica, Srednja
Vas, Stara Fužina) - then you’ll arrive at the panoramic delight that is lake Bohinj.
Ride a bit further to take in the idyllic Savica waterfall - then head back through
the town of Bohinjska Bistrica.
Bled - Zgornja Radovna The route: Bled - Radovna Valley - Zgornja Radovna
Length: 37km/4hours
Difficulty: medium/hard
Surface: asphal t/gravel track
This trip takes you first to the little village of Gorje,
where you’ll see a picturesque church (St. George’s). From Gorje you can also
turn right to visit Vintgar gorge (a short distance away). After a well-earned rest
at a pub, you will pass through Zgornje Gorje (Upper Gorje), Krnica then Radovna.
The Radovna valley, one of the most beautiful in Gorenjska, runs for 16km and
is surrounded breathtaking mountains and green hills. Along the way watch out
for ‘Napoleon’s stone’ - engraved with the signature of the old emperor himself.
Note that onl y the first two and half kilometres is tarmac, the rest of the way to
Zgornja Radovna being gravel.
The trip back is a more adrenaline-filled downhill drag - taking onl y about a third
of the time it takes to get there.
Blejski Grad - Kamen Grad The route: ‘Bled Castle to Rock Castle’
Length: 11.5km/45mins
Difficulty: easy
Surface: asphal t
Altitude: 225m
One for fans of castles and all things medieval. From Bled’s cliff top beauty, you’ll
ride along the banks of the lake itself, cruise on a well appointed bicycle lane to
Lesce, pass the airport and arrive in the village of Begunje. From there you will
see Kamen Grad, half in ruins, where you can freel y explore the old fortifications
(oldest part - 13th Century).

si. Home to the annual FIS ski fl ying world cup event, the backdrop of the
Plani ca vall ey is magni fi cent. Awesome rugged peaks tower all around;
formed by the Plani ca glacier some 20,000 years ago. The jump i tsel f
comprises a fearsomel y large and heart stoppingl y steep slope, stuff onl y
for professional ski fliers, or the clini call y insane. The current world record
(239m) is held by one of the former, Norwegian Bjørn Einar Romøren, and
was contested by a Finn, Janne Ahonen, whose 240m fli ght ended wi th a
fall - 2005 was apparentl y a great year for breaking records here. Every
year Plani ca is prepared for the onslaught of thousands spectators in
March. Being amongst 2000 metre alpine peaks, i t is the onl y kind of
setting worthy of such an internationall y presti gious ski event.
Of course i t’s not all about the ski jumpers, in fact, for many of the over
50,000 attendees each year the weekend is synonymous wi th parties,
performances and all-ni ght drinking. You can take a look at our now infa-
mous ‘party bus’ video - taken in 2010 - for some idea of what goes on
after the athl etes have finished for the day.

As a permanent fixture on pretty much every Top Ten list that has anything
to do with lakes, churches, castles or mountain towns, it’s no surprise that
Bled is Slovenia’s most popular tourist attraction for locals as well as foreign
visitors. During the chilly wintertime months the town and lake are relatively
peaceful compared with the peak tourist season, but there is still a full slate
of events to keep everyone entertained. While the island-bound church and
cliff-top castle are undoubtedly the two biggest contributors to the town’s
fame, they are far fromall that it has to offer. With over 1,000 years of history
under its belt, Bled is a bustling alpine town with a wide selection of hotels,
restaurants, enough nightlife to keep you occupied and even one of Europe’s
most prestigious business schools. In this issue we’ve also included nearby
Radovljica, a quaint medieval hilltop town that offers either a pleasant day
trip fromBled or more peaceful base for exploring the wider region. As always
we welcome any and all feedback, be it on Facebook, Foursquare, Twitter
or even old-fashioned email.

Cream cakes, known in Bled for decades,
are in fact the town’s symbol. Altrough
you can buy them elsewhere, those from
Bled are simply the best. Ištvan Lukačevič,
the former manager of the Hotel Park
patisserie, tested recipes for many years
before he finally succeeded. His cream
cakes, which are prepared at this patis-
serie and sold in the café opposite the
hotel, are famous. What is the secret?
In fact, there is no secret - only experience matters, and the cooks from Bled
have plenty of that. Since 1953 they have been serving up ‘Kremšnitr’ here,
October 2009 seeing the 10 millionth slice, unveiled in a whirl of glory at the
annual carnival in its honour.
Let us tempt you with the recipe: a golden crispy crust made frombutter dough
(mixed with butter, not margarine), a delicious vanilla cream of exactly the
right consistency (with exactly the right amount of flour - if there is too much
the cakes are no good, if too little, they collapse after cutting), topped with
whipped creamand a crispy layer of butter dough and finally, last but not least,
a good dusting of icing sugar. You see? Your mouth is watering already.
