BLOOD CELLS
NEUTROPHILS
 50 – 70%

 stains pale lilac

 highly phagocytic and motile

 active during the initial stage of infection

 can leave the blood & enter the infected area ----- destroy
the foreign particle.
EOSINOPHIL
 5%

 stains red/orange

 phagocytic

 can leave the blood

 major function ----- produce toxic proteins against parasites
BASOPHIL
 < 1%

 stain blue-purple

 role --- not clear, but release histamine ---- inflammation &
allergic
responses


MONOCYTE
 25 – 35%

 are not phagocytic until maturation

 during infection --- enlarge & develop into active phagocytic
macrophage

 leave circulating blood and enter body tissue & mature into
macrophage.

 the maturation of monocyte activates the swelling of lymph
node during infection
LYMHOCYTES
 3 – 9%

 not phagocytic

 important in specific immunity
