EATS, DRINKS & ENTERTAINMENT
BEST ASIAN RESTAURANT Chey Thuy
2655 28th St., Boulder, 303.442.1700, www.chezthuy.com
Since 1993, perennial favorite Chez Thuy has brought the lively flavors of Vietnamese,
Chinese, Thai and Indonesian cooking to hungry Boulder diners. Chez Thuy’s chefs use
fresh cilantro, basil, lemongrass, tamarind, ginger, coconut, pineapple and mango to create
an exciting menu that is perfect for sharing in a group. Order up a hot, spicy soup and some
crunchy spring rolls to get started. Many appetizers are served traditional-style with rice
papers to wrap your own ingredients at your table and enjoy with nuoc mam, the house
dipping sauce. Vegetarians like the great selection of entrees, fromthe spicy Buddha Delight
(Malai Chay) to more mellow Lo Mein with tofu and vegetables. Order a Thai Iced Tea or
Coffee, or go crazy and order Fried Bananas Flambee for the perfect finish to your evening.
Thank you to “Twee” and her staff for bringing us the best in Asian cooking, seven days a
week (holidays, too!).

BEST BAKERY Breadworks Café
2644 Broadway, Boulder, 303.444.5667, www.breadworks.net
Connoisseurs of crust, fans of the flakiest dough and supporters of stone-ground organic baking count on Breadworks Café for their
morning croissant, their lunchtime Panini and a loaf of artisan bread to go. And it’s been that way since Breadworks first opened its
doors on Valentine’s Day, 1995. North Boulder neighbors drop by to enjoy the scene from one of the outdoor tables or share a tabletop
inside. “We have never lost our focus on providing quality baked goods at affordable prices,” says Larry Domnitz, who owns and operates
the popular bakery with his wife Colleen, a classically trained executive chef whose resume includes a stint at Chez Panisse. “Colleen use
to come in and buy bread from me,” Larry recalls. Destiny took its course, and since then the duo has grown the business to four times
its original size, with a wood-burning pizza oven, daily specialty sandwiches, soups and salads. Got Cupcake Fever? Choose yours from
the daily assortment, or custom order a dozen for a special occasion. We could go on, but that would just be icing on the cake.

BEST BAR AND BEST ITALIAN RESTAURANT
Carelli’s of Boulder Ristorante Italiano
645 30th St., Boulder, 303.938.9300, www.carellis.com
If you’re looking for la dolce vita served on a plate, set your GPS for Carelli’s, where the traditions of hospitality
and delicious Italian food are alive and well, with a contemporary twist. Trained as a chef by trade, your host
Greg Carelli claims there’s “no secret” to the restaurant’s success. “We’ve been family owned and operated for 19
years, and it really just comes down to hard work and perseverance,” he says. “We keep our menu interesting.
Every night our chef does a fresh fish special. One night it might be Crab and Lobster Cakes, or it could be Pan
Seared Sea Bass fromour special fresh seafood provider in Hawaii. We have also added a newGluten-Free menu,”
that features Build-Your-Own-Pizzas, Grilled Salmon, and chicken or steak entrees. A carefully selected wine list
focuses on wines that deliver great value, whether you choose a high-reputation appellation or moderately priced
label. The perfect dinner deserves a stellar selection of drinks to go with it, and Boulder County voters also
designated Carelli’s as home to the Best Bar. The new Osteria bar has quickly established its reputation for
dramatic but comfortable ambiance, tasty cocktails and live music on Thursdays and Saturdays. Share an end-
of-day toast and appetizers with friends by the gorgeous outdoor fire pit surrounded with pillows and cushions.
“Cin Cin to Carelli’s!” we say.

What’s the secret ingredient behind an unforgettable event? A Spice of Life! Since 1987, co-owners David Rubin and Dan Bruckner have wowed us with their special approach to catering, bringing
together exquisite culinary treats, spectacular presentation and a dedicated staff that exceed your expectations, every time. “We bring passion and enthusiasm to every event,” Rubin says, from
intimate get-togethers for 30 to the ultimate street party of 3,000 people celebrating the grand opening of the Twenty Ninth Street Mall. Three certified chefs do a lot of their magic on site, so the
food is served at its best. Budgets are a little tighter this year, Rubin explains, but Spice of Life’s team can work with you to put on a party people won’t forget. We like their community spirit and
commitment to “Zero Waste” practices, too. Is there anything they don’t do well? “We’re not very good at cutting back on our quality,” Rubin says with a laugh.

BEST BARBECUE The Rib House
1801 13th St., Boulder, 303.442.RIBS; 1920 S. Coffman St., Longmont, 303.485.6988;
www.theribhouse.com
Saucy, sweet and spicy! That’s the way we like our barbecue, and The Rib House is your favorite
place for authentic, Kansas City-style ribs, sausage, brisket and succulent sides, with the kind of
friendly service that makes you come back. Kansas City natives Merry Ann and Tracy Webb came
to Colorado in 1989 and immediately started missing the classic barbecue restaurants they left
behind. They opened their first Rib House in July 2001 and Colorado barbecue has never been
the same since. “There’s nothing baby-sized about our Baby Back Ribs,” Tracy says. “They’re so
tender, you grab the rib and the meat falls off the bone. Honestly, they’re so good, our ribs have
turned vegetarians into meat eaters,” he says with a laugh. Your order is served with your choice
of four warm sauces on the side, from mild to fire to match your taste buds. “The hotter sauces
aren’t just about burning your mouth,” Tracy explains, “they deliver lots of flavor.” Side orders
make it a meal, and you can choose from BBQ beans, red-skinned mashers, coleslaw, chipotle
potato salad, and the famous Cheesy Corn Bake. Finish with an order of cobbler, key lime pie or
a fudgy brownie, just because you deserve it!

BEST HAPPY HOUR AND BEST OUTDOOR DINING AND BEST APPETIZERS
Mediterranean Restaurant (The Med)
1002 Walnut St., Boulder, 303.444.5335, www.themedboulder.com
Hats off to The Mediterranean Restaurant for achieving the hat trick of three “Bests” this year! Locals just call it “The Med”
but the short moniker is deceptive for a restaurant that delivers so much. The Med is a longtime favorite destination for
Happy Hour aficionados who enjoy the extensive menu of tasty appetizers, tapas and pizzas. Order up a frosty microbrew, a
sangria or handmade Martini so your other hand has something to do. Unwind, chat up a new friend. There’s no need to
hurry; this “hour” lasts from 3 to 6:30 p.m., seven days a week. The cheery patio, festooned with flowers, a fountain and
colorful tiles, is a special getaway retreat with a hint of the Côte d’Azur, just steps from the bustle of downtown. “We’ve spent
a lot of effort on the aesthetics of our outdoor dining,” says manager Mike Gleason. “It’s a comfortable space; people are
willing to wait a bit longer to enjoy the ambiance of our patio.” Eating light, or just want to experiment with some new
dishes? The Med’s appetizer menu awaits! Taste the sunny influences of Italian, Spanish, French and Greek cuisine, brought
together in the form of crisp Calamari, Gambas (Catalan-style shrimp), Polenta Fritti, Prosciutto and Melon or Caprese salad.
Order a selection, share, compare – and order again!

BEST ICE CREAM/FROZEN YOGURT
Glacier Home Made Ice Cream & Gelato
3133 28th St., Boulder, 303.440.6542; 4760 Baseline Road, Boulder, 303.499.4760; 1350 College Ave., Boulder, 303.442.4400; 1749 Main St.,
Longmont, 303.485.883; www.glacierhomemadeicecream.com
For even the most dedicated ice cream maven, Glacier presents quite a challenge: 800 flavors! A top seller is fresh Colorado peach, about which
owner Mark Mallen says, “We’ll process over 1,000 pounds of peaches a year from the Western Slope to make ice cream, gelato and sorbet.”
In business only since 2001, Glacier was recently chosen one of the 10 best ice cream stores in America by forbestraveler.com. “We’re very
grateful to the Boulder County community,” says Mallen. “They recognize quality products and have given us great support. We put quality
ahead of profit; the profit comes later.” He credits his employees: “We employ great people – the ice cream makers and the counter people. We
look for employees who are personable, because customers come in who are, 1., already in a good mood or, 2., want to be in a better mood.”
Mallen works with other local companies and chefs to create unique culinary experiences – like honey peanut butter ice cream made from
Justin’s nut butter, a dinner at Restaurant 4580, pairing each course with a different ice cream, and an “ultimate chocolate” dessert for Radda.
“Boulder is such a great community, with locally owned, independent businesses. I hope they continue; we need to keep supporting the locals.”

1397 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.545.6800
1107 13th St., Boulder, 303.448.1200
No matter how you stack them, Salvaggio’s sandwiches are
a true culinary achievement. Start with fresh bread, baked
from scratch daily. Add your choice of cheese and a
generous portion of meat, garnish with crisp veggies and
top it all with your favorite dressing. “We don’t skimp on
the portions here,” says general manager Maria Gonzales,
“and our staff works hard to keep it fun and friendly while
building you a great sandwich.” All side orders are made in
house as well, from the macaroni and potato salads to the
tasty coleslaw. The most popular orders include the Prime
Rib, the Italian and Turkey sandwiches, or order your very
own custom masterpiece with your choice of ingredients.
Oddest order? “I think that would be the Chicken Salad
with Italian Sausage sauce,” Gonzales says. And don’t forget
to add a homemade brownie or cookie to top off your
order. Whether they’re creating one single sandwich or 700
sandwiches for a CU football event, you know you’re in for
fresh taste, generous portions and a bit of friendly ’tude,
served up Salvaggio’s style.

BEST COFFEEHOUSE
Vic’s
2680 Broadway, Boulder, 303.440.8209
3305 30th St., Boulder, 303.440.2918
801 Main St., Louisville, 303.666.1402
700 Tenacity, Suite 101, Prospect New Town,
Longmont, 303.485.6791
At Vic’s, first and foremost it’s about the
coffee. Good coffee, dark roasted and
served pretty much anyway you want it.
The baristas are friendly in a non-
corporate way and keep things moving.
Locally baked scones, pastries and
muffins go great with your cuppa Joe.
Did we mention there’s free Wi-Fi? Every
great coffeehouse has its scene, and Vic’s
version is hustle, bustle and laid-back
cool, all at once. The tables out front are
popular for meeting friends or taking a
caffeine break while you’re out walking
your canine friends. Inside, great
American novels and business plans are
being written on a medley of laptops,
two chic ladies are catching up on
neighborhood news, and one young man
in a fedora is scrutinizing the local
artwork on the walls. Owner Mike
Hilliker says that Vic’s success is all about
“good product, good service, good
customers and a good staff.” Good
enough to be the best.

BEST VEGETARIAN RESTAURANT
Leaf Vegetarian Restaurant
2010 16th St., Boulder, 303.442.1485, www.leafvegetarianrestaurant.com
When Lenny Martinelli was a vegetarian about 20 years ago, the
standard restaurant offering for non-meat eaters was roasted vegetables
and potatoes. He opened Leaf Vegetarian Restaurant a couple years ago
to do something more distinctive and interesting. “It’s our fifth
restaurant,” he notes, “and they all have a vegetarian component.” His
other eateries are well known to locals: Aji, the Boulder Dushanbe Tea
House, the Huckleberry Restaurant in Louisville, and the Naropa Café.
“We are the only vegetarian restaurant in Boulder. I think enough
people know about us, know that the food is really good, and different.
Fifty percent of our customers are not vegetarians; they come because
our food is good. Omnivores come in and eat our food and walk out
saying ‘Wow.’” Some favorites are stuffed poblano pepper with
chocolate mole, jerk tempeh with coconut plaintain sauce, and for
dessert, vegan carrot cake and green tea creme brulee. “We always have
homemade pie with a vegan crust, and we offer a flourless chocolate
cake for the non-wheat eaters. We provide for people with allergies. We
really try to please.” Besides chef Steven Dustin and managing partner
Gerry Manning, who puts together the list of organic, biodynamic and
sustainably grown wines, wife Sara Martinelli is “the tea queen” for the
restaurants. You can enjoy organic beer and smoothies, too, and a good
selection of vegan food. “We are introducing at least one course that’s
raw,” Martinelli says. Leaf and its four sister restaurants share in the
ownership of a local organic farm. “At the 63rd Street Farm, our
produce is grown organically and biodynamically, and we are able to be
involved in the agricultural process every step of the way. We can ensure
the quality of our produce by working hand-in-hand with our farmers
to determine which crops to plant, and we carefully craft our menus to
coincide with the natural harvest periods.”

With all the pizza places around, what makes Abo’s stand out? “Quality ingredients – special
dough and special sauce made daily just for Abo’s,” according to manager Ben Bishop. “Also,
our professional pie makers, professional because of the quality they assure and the pride they
take in their work.” It’s true, the dough is made fresh daily and hand tossed according to
Neopolitan New York tradition, and, oh, that genuine Neopolitan crust – benissimo! It is
classically thin with a bumpy texture, bubbly, pliable but firm to fold over. Abo’s Pizza still
adheres to the original quality ingredients of its first pie, which hit Boulder in 1977. The
sauce is a proprietary blend fashioned after the legendary Rocky Graziano family sauce recipe.
Founder Steve Abo was trained in New York pizza restaurants owned by the once-famous
boxer. Abo’s continues to use high quality tomatoes from the same supplier year after year.
The freshest vegetables are delivered and chopped daily. They use mozzarella cheese that won’t
slide off the crust. A slice of Abo’s pizza is only $3, and the restaurant offers lunch specials.
Bishop says, “Thanks to all our fans,” and notes, “We have quite a few regulars who come in
three to five days a week. We know them by their names and their slices!”

BEST SEAFOOD RESTAURANT
Jax Fish House
928 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.444.1811, www.jaxfishhouseboulder.com
Once again Jax takes top honors for the best seafood in this land-locked county. Much of the
credit goes to world-class, award-winning chef Hosea Rosenberg, who believes that flavor is
paramount. With that in mind he creates innovative dishes that capture the essence of fresh fish
and fresh produce – whenever possible using produce from local farmers as well as organic and
natural products. “Another important reason for our success is our loyal staff of 8, 10, and even
15 years, when the restaurant opened,” says manager Lee Sandoval. “They’ve helped build a
clientele and atmosphere; everyone here provides service. And the food is very fresh and healthy,
with deliveries every day.” Jax’s famous Raw Bar features a variety of fresh oysters, clams, chilled
crabs and lobsters, all flown in daily. Favorite dishes are Colorado striped bass and Nicoise olive-
dusted Alaskan halibut. Blue plate specials are popular: jambalaya on Sunday, old school tuna
on Monday, New Zealand bluenose on Tuesday and paella on Wednesday. Uniquely Jax is the
brick wall where well over a thousand customers have written their names (some over other
customers’ names), and the “Wall of Fame'” lining the bar that is covered with photos from
alumni, employees and regulars showcasing their catch of the day.

BEST TAKE-OUT FOOD
Jimmy & Drew’s
Delicatessen
2855 28th St., Boulder, 303.447.3354
This is a real-deal deli: they cook
everything from scratch. And they deliver
anywhere in Boulder County. Jimmy
Eggers, who created the eponymous deli
with Drew Marx, says customers recognize
and appreciate “the quality of the food.
There are so many sandwich shops around
Boulder, but we are a true deli. We smoke
our salmon, roast our prime ribs, make our
cole slaw and potato salad ourselves. It’s all
about the food.” They offer favorites from
around the country, like Philly cheese
steaks and New York-style pastrami and
corned beef sandwiches. Every night a
different homestyle dinner is featured –
priced at a mere $10. And you have to try
“Jimmy’s Favorite” – a Reuben
(traditionally made with corned beef,
Swiss cheese and sauerkraut on rye bread)
that shuns the bread in favor of two
oversized potato latkes (pancakes, for the
uninitiated). It was dubbed one of the
“Best Sandwiches in America” by Esquire
magazine. Watch for a new book by David
Sax coming out in November, called “Save
the Deli,” which lauds Jimmy & Drew’s.
Pretty much everything is on the take-out
menu, and you can come in and pick up
your order, or avail yourself of the county-
wide delivery service.

BEST INDIAN RESTAURANT The Taj
2630 Baseline Road, Boulder, 303.494.5216, www.tajcolorado.com
Serving the freshest and healthiest food – that is what motivates Taj owners and husband-and-wife team, Vhim Rai and Kamala Ghimire,
to work 16 to 18 hours a day. “We have many long-time customers,” Ghimire says, “some who have been coming since we opened The Taj
in February 1996.” Rai does the cooking, along with several chefs he trained. “I, too, do some cooking and put in seasonal vegetables
myself,” says Ghimire. Her husband supervises the abundant, popular buffet. “To make the food healthier,” says Rai, “we use less fat and
heavy cream, just the bare minimum. Some people come every day for lunch, because the food is light. And we use absolutely no MSG at
all.” They are introducing gluten-free and dairy-free Indian food. At their year-old restaurant, Mantra Indian Cuisine (1630B 30th St.,
Boulder, 303.444.1809, www.mantracolorado.com), you can sample masala dosa, a popular south Indian gluten-free crepe. While featuring
a popular buffet at lunch and dinner, Mantra is also a “sit-down and be served” kind of place – at affordable prices. Try “thali,” platters of
little samplers of tasty Indian specialties. The favorite dishes of Taj customers are chicken masala, tandoori chicken, and saag paneer
(homemade cheese cubes cooked with Indian creamed spinach). “For the Tandoori, we cook our meat fresh, so it is moist and tender,”
Ghimire says. She also notes that they use healthy options such as brown rice and steamed rice with no oil, steamed vegetables, and salad
with fresh-cut vegetables. Another customer favorite is the homemade chai. “Customers come even from Evergreen for it,” she says. “It’s

After less than two years in business, The Empire Lounge & Restaurant has already become a Louisville
fixture. “What we tried to create was a neighborhood restaurant filled with regulars,” says co-owner and
general manager Brendan McManus. “And that’s what we’ve accomplished.” Indeed, locals have been
flocking to The Empire since it opened, clamoring for its simultaneously accessible and sophisticated fare,
impressive wine selection, classic cocktails and lounge atmosphere. Whether you’re looking for the most
sublime deviled eggs you’ve ever eaten, melt-in-your-mouth gourmet delights like the Colorado lamb and
onion brochette, fresh and unique salads, or a berry crumble that would make Granny blush, The Empire
Lounge & Restaurant is your ideal destination. And you can feel good about what you’re eating. “Food-wise,
we have as much local and organic product as we can,” explains McManus. The menu changes frequently
and there are daily specials to highlight the seasonality of the food.

Ask Rose Fuller which menu item is the customer favorite, and she answers
without hesitation: Eggs New Orleans (fried eggplant slices with creole sauce,
poached eggs and hollandaise). “Though our eggs Benedict will give any other
eggs Benedict in town a run for their money,” the Boulder Lucile’s principal host
adds with a laugh, and then pauses for a moment. “You know, there are lots of
great dishes, but people come to us for our biscuits and jam, our beignets and
coffee.” The truth of the matter is you can’t go wrong. If any of you reading this
haven’t yet experienced Lucile’s, there’s nothing left to say. You simply must go
to understand the distinctively decadent, immediately addictive creole cuisine.
For the rest of us who regularly go out of our way for the chicory coffee, Eggs
Sardou and the best grits this side of the Mississippi, here’s something else to love
about Lucile’s: The restaurant started a farm in Niwot to grow its own food.
“Our daily and weekend specials have been fresh from the farm,” enthuses
Fuller. “We’re on our way to being more organic and self-sustainable.” And I’m
on my way to Lucile’s. See you there.

BEST PLACE FOR A ROMANTIC DINNER Flagstaff House Restaurant
1138 Flagstaff Road, Boulder, 303.442.4640, www.flagstaffhouse.com
The stars twinkling over the foothills, the breathtaking views of Boulder, the slightly thinner air – the Flagstaff House’s
mountainside location is cause enough to get weak in the knees. Add that special someone as well as exquisite food, drinks and
service to the mix and forget about it; you’re Cupid fodder. Romance is part of the package at the Flagstaff House. “A lot of
proposals happen here,” says general manager Scott Monette, who recommends popping the question during the first course
instead of waiting until dessert. “We find people enjoy the experience much more that way,” he adds with a knowing smile. Truly,
it would be a shame to spend a night at this premier dining establishment distracted by nerves when you could be looking deep
into your loved one’s eyes, drinking in the ambiance and a delectable Cabernet Sauvignon, savoring a stolen kiss and butter
poached Maine lobster. The Flagstaff House’s seasoned staff goes out of its way to make every night remarkable for its customers,
whether the moment calls for crystal glasses or party hats. “We’re a family-run operation and have been around for 37 years,” says
Monette. “It’s great to be a part of Boulder and part of the environment for so many people’s special occasions.”

Our readers aren’t the only ones who have noticed
the fine offerings from Oskar Blues Cajun Grill &

the top 50 Colorado companies to watch by the
Colorado Office of Economic Development and
International Trade, and its quaffables and edibles
have been praised by Food & Wine, Men’s Health,

summer’s set of accolades. All this national
attention is fantastic, but keeping things down-
home is what Oskar Blues does best. Here you’ll
find hearty comfort food and plenty of it. Start
with a pile of Cajun Catfish Bites then tuck into a
Heatseeker Burger or a Big Ol’ Phatty Pepperoni

summer in Boulder. There’s something for everyone among the 10 different event areas and 500 vendors in attendance, from
holistic health to hip hop dance, bluegrass music to brew appreciation, children’s play to fine art. And let’s not forget the Great
Duck Race, which provides endless excitement for participants, a visual feast as 5,000 rubber ducks go barreling down the
creek, and money for the city of Boulder Parks & Recreation department’s EXPAND program. Next year promises to be
another community celebration to remember. Mark your calendar now for Saturday, May 29 through Monday, May 31, 2010.

Boulder Theater is a landmark – it opened in 1906 and has

has been renovated several times to fit the needs of its
audiences over the years, the most recent changes having to
do with sound quality and expanding the theater’s

venue’s overarching appeal, with its hand-painted murals
and fresco ceilings. And diversity of talent is still the name of
the game. In October, Boulder Theater will play host to
national recording artists Aimee Mann and Dinosaur, Jr.,
local favorite DeVotchka, the highly anticipated Dancing

Just what exactly is American cuisine, and what’s cooking in our melting pot these days? “Our focus is on locally produced,
seasonal ingredients, prepared simply so that the expression of the food comes through,” explains Kate Kaufman, manager
at community bistro The Kitchen. “Our produce and our meat come from local farmers and ranchers, who are our friends
as well.” Chefs Hugo Matheson and Kimbal Musk have created a menu that skillfully moves from starter plates of Poached
Salmon Salad or Pork Terrine to enticing entrees like Roasted Pork Loin or Pan Seared Lamb Sirloin. Weekend brunch
(you can even order a Full English Breakfast!) is served until 2 p.m. – the perfect way to slow-start your day. Not a morning
person? If the nighttime is the right time for your socializing, join friends for dinner under the chandeliers in the dining
room. Or cozy up to the counter with a special friend and share a couple of yummy desserts and a tawny port. The vibe
is tastefully mellow, a happy mashup of visual palette and “flavor” palate that makes The Kitchen your choice for Best

Despite these tough economic times, this new restaurant, which opened Feb. 13,
is thriving. “It’s the right concept at the right time,” says general manager John-
Mark Larter. “It’s also the right price point. You can come in for dinner, tax, tip
and beer for $16.” Expect fresh, unique and affordable Asian-inspired cuisine
paired with attentive and friendly service and classic, “old-school” handcrafted
cocktails. The signature dish is a big bowl of ramen noodles, with the chef ’s own
chicken broth, and chicken or pork and veggies. And there are lots of other
wholesome and creative dishes to try. Larter encourages families to come and feel
right at home at Happy Noodle: “The food comes quickly, in less than 10
minutes, and with the openness of the space and community seating, it’s a
rambunctious restaurant on some nights – filled with families, serious diners, and
cocktail drinkers.” Once the kitchen closes for the day, the bar takes center stage
and the place is transformed into a kind of Prohibition-era speakeasy.

Boulder’s Dinner Theatre has been wowing us with live, Broadway-quality performances paired with

Some have been with Boulder’s Dinner Theatre for 20 years, and some are new to the group. Some
have Academy Award nominations and some are just getting their feet wet in the industry. But
veterans and fresh talent alike pour their hearts into every performance. Come see for yourself; the

BEST DESSERT Cheesecake Factory
1401 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.546.0222, www.thecheesecakefactory.com
Evelyn Overton was a lot of things – a wonderful wife and mother, an active member of her community, an organizer and
a doer – but she is best known for her contribution to the advancement of dessert. She created the recipe around which
The Cheesecake Factory was built, the cheesecake to end all cheesecakes. In the late 1940s, Evelyn’s cheesecakes were so
popular with friends, her husband Oscar’s business associates and local bake sales that she and Oscar opened a small bakery.
Through persistence and hard work, the Overton family’s business grew from one singularly lip-smacking recipe at one
small Detroit location to today’s Cheesecake Factory, with 50 different desserts at each of its 150 locations nationwide. If
you’re not in the mood for cheesecake, try one of the decadent chocolate cakes or ice cream sundaes. But with a name like
The Cheesecake Factory, it’s hard not to be in the mood. There are more than 30 legendary cheesecakes from which to
choose, including lemon raspberry cream, white chocolate caramel macadamia nut, tiramisu, Key lime and, of course, the
original. Thanks Evelyn.

Hoshi Motors owner Laurie Farmen got her first
under-the-hood experience while attending a
vocational technical school in New Mexico. “I
found out, I really liked it,” she says. “We opened 22
years ago and in that time we have developed
personal relationships with many of our customers.
Confidence is so important in deciding where to
take your car for service. We pride ourselves on
our honesty and our competence.” Customers
appreciate the continuity they find at Hoshi Motors;
some of Farmen’s technicians have been with her for
more than 20 years and know customers by their
name and their car model. “We don’t blow our own
whistle much. We rely on our reputation and word-
of-mouth recommendations from our customers.
Anything else we need to know? “Oh yes, we also

What drives an auto dealer to be its best? A dedication to stellar
service and long-term customer relationships, says Lynn Rickman,
vice president of Fisher Chevrolet Honda in Boulder. “We place a
high importance on service, from helping you find the right car,
through the sale and throughout the lifetime of your vehicle.
People are more discerning right now, and value conscious. That’s
where our knowledgeable sales staff can help. Some of them have
been with us for over 25 years.” Honda and GM have repeatedly

technicians by name, they’ve been coming here so long,” Rickman
says. “We have great customers, and we appreciate their support.

Seems like everyone’s keeping a closer eye on their money now. After all the
bankruptcies, market bottoms and bailouts, you get to wondering how secure your
money is. “Consumers today have a basic distrust of the financial industry,” says
Rich Jones, vice president of marketing for Elevations Credit Union. “They’ve seen
the bailouts and TARP, and they’ve seen the rate on their credit cards skyrocket. Now
what they want is a safe, local community organization that can take care of all their
financial service needs.” Members like the fact that the money that they deposit with
Elevations stays right here, Jones explains, and these funds are in turned loaned out
locally, which helps keep our economy on its feet. But Elevations is more than just a
place to put your money. What are the most popular services? “Checking account
with debit cards – we even have one option that really is free. All our lending
products are in high demand, because so many banks have stopped doing loans. And
mortgages, which rode a wave of refis when rates were historically low but now are
equally powered by new home sales” as buyers return to the market.

Bartlett Interiors

Bartlett Interiors has been decorating and furnishing
Boulder homes for nearly 50 years. Started by a
Boulder family in 1960, Jane Bartlett joined the
business in 1975 and bought it in 1984, the same year
her sister, Nancy, joined her in the enterprise. “We are
a small, but full-service interior design firm – just two
people,” Jane Bartlett says. “We deal with all aspects
of residential and commercial design.” They have a
large library of fabrics, tile, carpeting and more. “We
also have a showroom of furniture and accessories,
with hand-picked pieces of nice quality, collectible
things, not throw-away things. They have a homier
feel than you find in other stores. We’d love to have
them in our own homes.” And the Bartletts have a
consulting service – from small to large assignments.
It can be one pillow, reupholstering a chair, or
consulting on remodeling one or more rooms in a
home. The secrets of their success: “We try to be good
listeners and hear what people want, so they’re not
intimidated by the process. We have years of
experience that we love passing on to people, teaching
them and working with things they already own,
making it their home, not ours.”

you and your belongings.” For 15 years, savvy
Colorado individuals, businesses and non-

Taylor Moving, which has earned a
reputation for trustworthiness, superior
service and satisfied customers. The company
transports as many as 1,200 households and
businesses each year. It specializes in moves
within Boulder County, but regularly conveys
people all over Colorado. Always looking to
be good community citizens, Taylor works
with Eco-Cycle to help the environment and
create a model for zero waste – for example,
they keep moving materials from the landfill

customers and reselling them at a reduced

Cottonwood Kennels has won the Boulder
County Gold Award since 2003. “Our staff
does a fantastic job,” says Tom Bonfili, co-
owner of the kennel with Penny Vardell.
“They work very hard and have to be very
dedicated. They really have to love animals.”
The staff provide Boulder County’s pets with
tender, loving, play-and-stay care in an
idyllic setting. Located on a small farm that
also houses sheep, alpaca, ducks, chickens
and peacocks, the facility features spacious,
stimulating outdoor and indoor
environments for dogs, cats, birds, bunnies,
ferrets and most other small animals.
Special-needs pets are welcomed, and the
kennel has a toll-free number that owners
may call any time for a progress report. But
year after year, what sets Cottonwood apart
are the pet-to-person connections, the high-
quality interactions between the staff and
every one of its boarders, every day. “The
bottom line is you have to really care, you
have to want to do the best job possible –
and we do,” Bonfili emphasizes.

Paul Roach, RE/MAX of Boulder
2425 Canyon Blvd, Suite 110, Boulder, 303.441.5693, www.pauljroach.com
For his entire 32-year career, Paul Roach has lived, worked and invested in Boulder. He has an
intimacy with the people, neighborhoods and the market that few real estate brokers share. He
is an expert in local regulations, processes and properties, and has strong relationships with
mortgage brokers, title companies, appraisers, insurance companies, contractors and
inspectors, so transactions go smoothly. “The primary thing is trust,” he says. “If a client asks
me, ‘Should I buy this house?’ and I don’t think so, I say so. And I look at the resale value of
the home they’re considering, and whether it’s a good value, and I advise them. For sellers, there
are four things that determine if a house sells: price, condition, location and terms. I work with
the owner to prepare the property properly, and to stage the house. It takes negotiating ability
and finesse to deal with another agent, and it’s important to have a good reputation with one’s
peers.” Roach is proud that in 2007 and 2008 the RE/MAX office in Boulder was the No. 1
producing single office in terms of commissions.” Roach’s volume in sales is $150 million in
the last 20 years. “A real estate agent is a psychologist, lawyer, financier, decorator, social worker
and engineer,” he quips.

the World, a network of independent, privately held companies with 5,000 offices in
the United States and in 25 countries. “We’re fortunate; our success is directly related

live here and the people who work here who make it special. We have only 60 to 70
residents and 60 employees – we’re like a family. Everybody in collaboration makes
it a special place.” The Academy’s mission statement tells it all: To be a community
of excellence that fosters meaningful living in an intimate environment of grace and
beauty. “We – all employees – always try to go the extra mile for everyone here,”
McMurray says. “Because we’re small, everyone knows everyone. The staff gives so

BEST PET GROOMING SERVICE
The Hydrant
2900 Valmont Road, Boulder, 303.442.7550
The Hydrant stands out with its canine and human customers for its excellent
customer service, the smiling faces that greet the pooches and, points out
manager Elisha Martinez, “everything is included at one price, with no add-ons.
Other grooming shops may be cheaper, but we include with the haircut: bath,
nail clipping and ear cleaning, and friendly dogs get to be cage-free. We give one
of the best haircuts in town, and we’ve provided excellent, reliable service for 39
years, with the same owner, Joy Bishop.” The three groomers – Martinez,
Valerie Brandner and Jenny Wehinger – deserve much of the credit for The
Hydrant’s success. They have all been there for more than five years. “We’re hair
stylists for dogs,” says Martinez. And if this isn’t enough, the pup who has
everything might fancy Hydrant’s most popular service – the spa package,
including a facial that repels and removes odors, aromatherapy, paw treatment
and special cologne. Oh, for a dog’s life.

BEST VETERINARIAN
Alpine Hospital for Animals
3210 Valmont Road, Boulder
303.443.9661, www.alpinehospitalforanimals.com
Karen McCormick, DVM, CVA, has been practice owner of
Alpine Hospital since 2006. Her approach is humane and
compassionate to her animal patients and their owners. “My
underlying philosophy as a citizen and a doctor is to treat
people as I want to be treated – in other words, the Golden
Rule. This means to have compassion for other people’s fears,
to communicate choices for their pets and what the choices
mean, and never make judgments of what owners choose to do
for their pets. Whatever they decide is up to them, if only they
keep their pets pain-free.” She points out there are many
advancements in veterinary care and equipment today, but that
sometimes the care chosen has to be based on the means of the
owner. Besides practicing Western medicine, Alpine offers
alternative medical choices: acupuncture, laser therapy to
relieve pain without medication, BICOM
®
treatment for
allergies, and follow-up chemotherapy for pets referred from
Colorado State University. “We love what we do, and we have
respect and compassion for each other. It’s not just a job, but a
passion. We’re here to be partners with pet owners. We’re
owners ourselves.”

BEST BOULDER VALLEY/ST. VRAIN SCHOOL
Boulder High School
1604 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder, 303.442.2430, http://schools.bvsd.org/boulderhigh
Boulder High School is one of Colorado’s oldest and finest high schools. “This is a tremendous honor
for us to receive the Boulder County Gold People’s Choice Award,” says Boulder High School’s new
principal, Kevin Braney, who is full of enthusiasm for the school. “Winning it is directly related to the
support of the community, and the talent of our students and faculty. It’s a place that’s full of great
energy – and phenomenal academic achievement. We have 30 Advanced Placement classes, 34 clubs
and activities kids can join. We have so much talent in our art, music and theater programs. The spirit
that comes from community support and talented students and faculty leads to excellence in
everything we do. For me, it’s an honor to continue the good work that is done here, and I look
forward to the new heights we can reach together.”

This is the third year in a row that Hearing HealthCare Centers have won the Boulder County Gold
People’s Choice Award. What are they doing that’s special? “We make people feel very comfortable,” says
owner and director Whitney Swander, Au.D. “We have an open-door policy for people to come in if
anything is troubling them. Also, we like to be their source if they hear about any new technology and
for all aspects of hearing care.” Clients receive attentive follow-up care, too. Before they leave the office,
the staff makes another appointment for them. “So we know we’re going to see them again, whether it’s
in a week or six months,” Dr. Swander says. With technology changing all the time, she points out,
hearing aids are not like they were even five years ago. “We urge people to come in and learn what’s
available today. They can try on many types and styles. It’s important that people know they don’t need
to put it off, and that it can be a pleasant surprise.”

BEST TEACHER
Doug London,
Alexander Dawson School
10455 Dawson Drive, Lafayette
303.665.6679, www.dawsonschool.org
Doug London is the consummate teacher: in the
classroom, where English is his subject; on the soccer
field, where he coaches boys and girls teams to victory
(the Denver Post just named him Coach of the Year for
leading the girls soccer team to the state finals for Class
3A); and as Dean of Students, a role in which he
counsels kids who may have reached a crisis in their
lives. “I think what makes teaching high school so
interesting,” he says, “is that you get students to ask
better and better questions – about themselves, the
fiction they are reading and interacting with, and
ultimately the world they are moving into. With better
questions they become better at consuming, and
defining their life experiences.” In English class he gets
the juniors and seniors he teaches to examine themes
that challenge assumptions they’ve had – and to look at
them in their own lives. He has them do a lot of
practice writing to develop confidence in their skills.
“There are a lot of chances to write and get feedback on
their writing in a small school like Dawson.” In his
spare time London likes to ski and bike and – no
surprise – to coach boys and girls school or club soccer
teams. “I’ve enjoyed my 32-year career as a teacher and
hope I may have helped some kids make better choices
in their lives,” he says.

Humane Society
of Boulder Valley
2323 55th St., Boulder, 303.442.4030
www.boulderhumane.org
Adopting a pet from the Humane Society can be a
wonderful experience. But that’s not the only
service the Humane Society provides. CEO Lisa
Pedersen explains, “Our principal mission is to
create healthy relationships between pets and
people. One goal of that is adoption; another is to
help maintain healthy relationships of people
already living with pets. We aim to be the ultimate
animal resource in the community: for new pets, in
the veterinary clinic, dog training classes, activities
and more. We want people with any animal needs
to turn to us. Mainly we give shelter. We work on
behavior modification with animals before they go
into adoption; on the medical side we can provide
health care so they can find that forever home.”
She noted that adoptions this summer were up
over last year. The organization has expanded
programs for people in financial need who have
pets, helping with pet food and veterinary care.
“We’re grateful to the community for support, to
our volunteers and to people coming to us for
pets,” she says. “It’s a tribute to the way the
community values the animals in their lives.”

BEST PLACE TO ENTERTAIN KIDS Pearl Street Mall
Downtown Boulder (from 700 to 2200 Pearl St., between Spruce and Arapahoe)
303.449.3774, www.boulderdowntown.com
Terri Takata-Smith, executive director of Downtown Boulder, can cite endless possibilities for
entertaining kids on the Pearl Street Mall. And she’s talking just about the free stuff. “No cost, and
hours of enjoyment,” she says. During hot summer days, the pop-jet fountain on the 1300 block is a
huge crowd favorite, and kids can’t resist the cooling spray. Not far, on the 1400 block, is the marble
play area involving the oh-so-climbable snail and frog. In the 1200 block outside Peppercorn are rock
structures and a bridge for the kids to climb and explore. “Those activities are typical of Boulder,”
Takata-Smith notes. “People here love to climb and explore.” On the 1100 block is the “slippery rock,”
which attracts kids like a magnet. The famous Pearl Street Mall buskers are spellbinding: There’s
Bongo, the balloon artist, who twists balloons into every conceivable shape; and contortionist Mitford
Ibashi-i Brown, who unbelievably curls his lanky body into a 20-inch Plexiglass box. The people trains
run during the summer between the 1200 and 1400 blocks, Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to
noon. Festivals on the Mall – like the Boulder Asian Festival, and the Boulder Jewish Festival – often
incorporate kids’ activities. Seasonal events coming up include the Munchkin Masquerade on
Thursday, October 29, from 2 to 5 p.m., when little ones trick or treat up and down the Mall. And
all ages chime in for the home team at the Pearl Street Stampedes, those let-’em-have-it pep rallies on
the Friday nights before Colorado Buffaloes football home games, featuring the Golden Buffalo
Marching Band. No wonder kids – and their parents – love hanging out at the Pearl Street Mall.

Tans To Go has won the Boulder County Gold People’s Choice Award eight years in a row. Owner Doug Swartz credits his
outstanding staff of young women, many of whom have been with him for six, seven and eight years. They are “completely
empowered,” he says. “They can do what they need to do so all the customers are satisfied. We need to earn your business so
you’ll come here, and then treat you well so you’ll come back. The staff is trained from day one to ask customers what they
can do to make the experience better.” Thanks to the success of the business, Swartz says, “We have almost doubled in size
this year. We’re adding new equipment and services, and we’re excited about that.” And once again Tans To Go has been
selected to sponsor the CU cheerleaders and dance team.

1750 14th St., Boulder, 303.442.2340, www.travelpoints.com
Founded in 1957, James TravelPoints is today led by a second generation of the James family. President Donald
James explains the company’s success: “We’ve developed many specialty niches, so that one, two or three people
here become experts in a particular destination. They focus all their attention on that destination. For example,
we have three people whom we identify as our Mexico experts; people may go online themselves and research
Mexico travel, but then they want to talk with someone who really knows Mexico, so they call us. We have
three people who do nothing but plan trips to Belize and Costa Rica.” So, name your preferred location or type
of travel – Russia, Japan, Italy, barge trips in France, cruises, and so on – and you’ll find a specialist at James.
“We promote those experts on our Web site,” Donald James adds, “and so our marketplace has expanded
beyond Boulder – it’s all over the United States. Someone in New York who wants to go to Costa Rica contacts
us. One of the cornerstones of our business philosophy is creating relationships with our customers. Customers
stay with us long-term, and they talk to their friends, family and associates about the good experience they’ve
had with us. That’s the best advertising, and the best way for a business to grow and survive.”

BEST PLACE FOR WORSHIP Unity of Boulder
2855 Folsom St., Boulder, 303.442.1411, www.unityofboulder.com
Unity of Boulder is part of a worldwide Christian organization that is more than a century old. “First, on behalf of our Unity
Family, I want to thank all the people who voted for our church-center as the Best Place for Worship,” says minister Jack
Groveland. “In Boulder Unity we emphasize the True and Divine Self available within all people, regardless of their culture, race,
station in life, or particular religious orientation. It’s the same Divine Self whether you name it Krishna, Christ, Buddha, Nature,
Tao, God, or Higher Power – or any name you have for unconditional, all-intelligent Love. Thus, the emphasis of our church-
center is to help people and children of all ages to access their Divine Self Nature, which will enable them to live successful,
joyful, peaceful lives. Try Unity.”

BEST ACTIVIST/
COMMUNITY CHAMPION
John Breaux
Sadly, this Award is given posthumously. John
Breaux, age 57, was killed Jan. 30, 2009, after
being hit by a driver who veered off Highway
287 in Lafayette. Breaux was a familiar figure in
Louisville and Lafayette, known for his simple
acts of kindness. As he spent most days riding
his bicycle and picking up trash, he would hold
open a door for someone or share his kind
smile. Breaux lived with his family in
Louisville, where a life-sized bronze statue of
him, straddling his bike and waving, is planned
as a permanent memorial. The statue will be
placed on a grassy knoll near the Steinbaugh
Pavilion in the Front Street Plaza. The sculptor,
Louisville’s Dawn Record, considered Breaux a
friend and is donating her time. Cost of the
materials will be paid for through donations made to the John Breaux Memorial Fund. Record
said she hopes the statue, including a trash bag hanging from the bike's handlebar and a spot to
leave flowers, can be installed by Jan. 30, 2010, the anniversary of his death. A memorial bike ride
took place on Feb. 1, with hundreds honoring Breaux’s life. On May 9, dozens of people took
part in the city’s inaugural John Breaux Spring Cleanup Day. John Breaux’s legacy is alive in the
communities he loved. To donate to the John Breaux Memorial Fund to help cover the cost of
materials for the memorial statue, visit any U.S. Bank branch.

BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE
McGuckin Hardware
2525 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder, 303.443.1822, www.mcguckin.com
Multiple award winner McGuckin Hardware is the epitome of good customer service. “The
customer service standpoint sets us apart frommany other stores,” says marketing manager Randy
Barker. “This has been a family-owned business since 1955, and the customer-service example is
set by the owners: Dave Hight and his son, Barry Hight, are active on the sales floor and serving
customers every day. Due to the size of the store – 60,000 square feet with more than 200,000
items – it is often difficult for customers to locate things on their own. We strive to provide
outstanding service to help them find what they’re looking for. We try to be available, but not
overbearing.” Barker says the store is busy, despite the tough economy. “People are coming in here
to get assistance on repair and maintenance to extend the life of products, rather than replacing
them with new products.”

Let’s face it: buying a mattress is a big decision, the kind you literally have
to sleep on. If you’re going to spend a third of your life on a mattress, you
want it to be the right one. “Good quality bedding is an investment,” says
Verlo sales associate Kristin Hurlbut. “People are looking for a mattress
that is comfortable and won’t break down. We comfort test our customers
on a soft, medium and firm mattress to find your firmness preference, then
we find a quality mattress that matches your budget.” Every mattress set is
made to your order, right here in the Verlo factory, and guaranteed for a
minimum of five years. “We offer a comfort adjustment any time in the
first year after your purchase,” Hurlbut explains. “We’ll pick up your
mattress, bring it back to the factory and rebuild it for you if you decide
you want it a little softer or firmer, completely free. It’s gratifying when
people come back in and tell us how getting a good night’s sleep really
changed their life!” Voters didn’t have to toss and turn too much on this

BEST ANTIQUE JEWELRY STORE

942 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.938.8851, www.classicfacets.com
“Jewelry is fun; it makes you feel good,” says Mikki Rainey, owner of
Classic Facets in Boulder. Since opening in 1985, the store has
developed an international reputation as a source for one-of-a-kind,
authentic antique jewelry. “These pieces are a little bit of history,”
Rainey explains. “Back when these were made, heirloom stones were
passed down from generation to generation. Each piece of jewelry was
designed for a specific stone. This makes every piece as unique as its
stone.” At any one time, Classic Facets has thousands of pieces of vintage
costume, premier estate and fine jewelry. What’s hot right now? White
gold, filigree and diamond jewelry from the 1920s, Rainey says, and
there’s an unusually good selection available right now due to the current
economy, as more owners are deciding to consign their jewelry. “We’re a
unique store for unique jewelry. We’re not your run-of-the-mall store,”
she quips.

the perfect bicycle for you. Because they pedal what they peddle,
they know how to guide you on the style, size, components and
adjustments that fit the way you want to ride. And because there
are more than 1,600 bikes in stock, they can find one that matches
your budget, too. “We provide incredibly friendly service to
everyone,” says general manager Lester Binegar, “from expert
riders to weekend riders to just beginners.” Need to rent a bike?
This is the place. And you absolutely must see the vast museum of
historic bicycles and bike memorabilia. What does Binegar like
most about his job? “Working with a super fun team who are into
cycling and are committed to helping our customers find the
absolute right bike.”

JJWells earns top honors again this year for its women’s casual clothing, professional
attire, handcrafted jewelry and unique accessories. Since opening in 1982, the store has
become known for actively exploring fashion trends, picking the best pieces and
making them available right here in Boulder County. You’ll find an average of 75
different labels in house, personally selected by owners d. VanKrevelen, Maria

and exceptional service. From the latest trends to the classics, you can find it here.”
What’s popular right now? Suits are coming back after not being so popular for a

Reading connects us to vast worlds of thought and
experience. Operating a successful bookstore is a
lot about connections, too, says Boulder Book
Store owner David Bolduc, who opened the store
in 1973. “It’s a connection to the community on
many levels. It’s about providing a personal
experience that you will not find in many
bookstores that seem to have no sense of location.
When you walk in and see our best sellers, you’re
looking at local or regional authors. There’s a
conversation going on here, among neighbors.”
Bolduc suggests that each one of us is a thread in
the fabric of our community and its businesses.
“We should support each other to keep the fabric
together,” he says. Popular departments include a
“green” section with topics on conservation,
sustainable building and energy; Eastern religions
(Buddhism, yoga, spirituality); and Local Authors.
You can often find a gently used edition of many
titles in stock, which makes your book-buying
dollars go even further.

States, eco-friendly toys, travel toys and the coolest baby shower gifts around. “A lot of parents
remember coming in as kids, and now they’re bringing in their own kids, even grandkids,” says
assistant manager Cindy Russo. “It’s a joy to see the excitement on their faces. They may have
earned the money themselves doing chores and it’s a special occasion, carefully picking out their
very own toys.” Popular favorites include “the classics” like Legos and puzzles and action toys

BEST FLOOR COVERING STORE Atlas Flooring, Inc.
4920 28th St., Boulder, 303.442.3221, www.atlasflooring.com
Atlas Flooring has been covering our community’s floors since 1958, and according to owner Leister Bowling, the fundamentals of the business
are the same as they ever were. “Our customers like our pricing and service,” he says. “For our customer service, we try to be the best. And as
for price, I won’t allow us to be beat on anything; I’m very competitive.” Atlas Flooring’s large facility allows Bowling to stock a cornucopia of
flooring options, many of which tout green credentials: wood, both standard and exotic; various sizes and styles of tile; carpet in every shade
and grade, and attractive, durable linoleum and epoxy products. The store’s extra square footage also means Bowling can take advantage of
volume discounts, which he then happily passes along to Atlas Flooring’s commercial and residential clients. “We’re getting a lot of high-end
carpet from manufacturers at low prices because of the economy,” says Bowling. “I probably have 500 to 600 rolls of carpet in stock right now
– more than we’ve ever had. And the same is true for tile; we’ve got a ton of inventory now.” It’s a great time to be in the market for a new
floor, and a great time to visit Atlas Flooring.

BEST FLORIST AND BEST GARDEN CENTER
Sturtz & Copeland
2851 Valmont Road, Boulder, 303.442.6663, www.sturtzandcopeland.com
Since 1929, Sturtz & Copeland has been Boulder County’s perennial
favorite, as well as our annual and floral favorite. The floral department
employs award-winning, experienced designers who create stunning
arrangements in a variety of styles, from monochromatic rose bouquets to
wildflower explosions, traditional multi-flower arrangements to
unexpected combinations, structured pieces to gravity-defying displays.
They are true artists and work hard to convey whatever message a
customer is trying to send. Sturtz & Copeland’s florists use a lot of flowers,
many of which come from local growers, ensuring that every bouquet that
leaves the store is fresh. The same is true of the garden center’s plants,
which are selected for their mountain climate tolerance as well as their
function and beauty. The center is stocked with annuals, perennials,
tropical plants and bulbs, as well as wreaths, container gardens, tools,
planters and gardening supplies. Here you’ll find everything you need to
green up your home and office, as well as the know-how to do it. Sturz &

The Tree Farm’s 35 acres are home to the largest selection of plant material in the Rocky Mountain region,
including thousands of shade, fruit and flowering trees. Species are selected for their hardiness and
responsiveness to our climate. And every Tree Farm tree is inspected by the Colorado Department of
Agriculture and comes with a one-year warranty. The choices are staggering, but equally important to The
Tree Farm’s success, says manager Mike Gittleson, are the people behind the foliage: “We probably have
the most knowledgeable staff on the Front Range as far as nurseries go. Most of them have been with us
10 years plus.” The Tree Farm’s professional green thumbs are happy to help with landscape design and
plant selection, layout and care. They will load your purchases for free, ensuring your tree arrives home
in the same healthy condition it left the nursery, or deliver and plant your new greenery for an additional
charge. The Tree Farm’s annual fall sale is happening right now. Head to Longmont and pick up your end-

Ellie’s Eco Home Store
2525 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder, 303.952.1004, www.elliesecohomestore.com
The wide range of recycled and rapidly renewable products at Ellie’s Eco Home Store are as
impressive for what they are – attractive, affordable, effective, clever – as what they aren’t –
poisonous, single use, wasteful. Ellie’s new nontoxic cleaner bar, featuring eight beer taps that
dispense natural cleaning products, is a prime example. At Ellie’s, the mission is to enable
everyone to live an environmentally sustainable life. “Our customers appreciate our breadth of
selection and quality of products,” says Eco-Products president Steve Savage. Offering items
such as recycled plastic furniture, cork flooring, organic linens, nontoxic fertilizer and natural
pet supplies, Ellie’s Eco Home Store gives all of us the means to reduce our footprint on the
planet. Particularly popular is the compostable tableware (plates, cups, bowls, straws and
cutlery), which is manufactured by Ellie’s parent company, Eco-Products. Explains Savage:
“People love having those products for their birthday parties, company picnics and other
events,” including the likes of the Boulder Asian Festival and the U.S. Open Tennis
Championships in Flushing Meadows, Queens.

She says it’s a good gig. “Lots of people come to events and just stand there and smile and say,
‘I just love this place.’ When you ask them why, they can’t really say specifically.” It’s obvious,
isn’t it? Whole Foods and Boulder County were made for each other. We are some of the most
health-conscious, environmentally aware people in the country; Whole Foods is home to
unparalleled natural and organic products, and shares our commitment to the planet. We
appreciate it when a business goes above and beyond our expectations; one of the core values
at Whole Foods is “satisfying and delighting our customers.” Prepare to be delighted by Whole
Foods again this football season, thanks to Larson and her dedicated team. The Pearl Street
store will be hosting tailgate parties in its parking lot for all the CU home games. “We’ll be

Larson. “And people can park here for free and ride the bus over to the game.”

Walters & Hogsett Fine Jewelers is about to enter its 30th year of business, and its
offerings get more exciting every year. “We make sure that we are staying on the leading
edge of what’s going on in the jewelry industry, and the fashion industry since those
industries go hand in hand,” says co-owner B.J. Vieregg. “We try really hard to have a
tremendously diverse group of designs and designers, to constantly feature fun,
exciting, new things.” Case in point: Walters & Hogsett just launched Rebecca, a new
jewelry line made in Italy. The pieces are trendy, oversized, youthful and affordable.
And to give you an idea of how Walters & Hogsett is viewed by decision makers in the
industry, it is one of only 50 stores in the United States that was chosen to carry
Rebecca. The store is held in high esteem locally as well, and not only for its
outstanding products and customer service. Walters & Hogsett supports about 75 local
nonprofit organizations every year. “We try to do everything we can to support our
community,” says Vieregg. “We do a little bit for everyone, and then we pick three or
four groups a year to receive a more substantial donation.” In the past, Boulder
Community Hospital, Impact on Education, Colorado Music Festival and
HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties have been recipients of large
contributions from the jeweler. By supporting so many organizations, we are all on the

Paper Doll
1141 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.449.1661
Being Boulder County’s favorite gift giving consultant has its challenges.
“Sometimes it’s hard to decipher exactly what a customer wants,” laughs Paper Doll
owner Troy Rivington. Sometimes they know precisely what they want without
realizing it, he says, and sometimes they have no idea. “It’s our job to help them find
a perfect gift, one that shows the person they’re giving it to that they care,
something that the recipient would really love.” The friendly employees of Paper
Doll ask questions and make suggestions that lead to the right gift every time. It’s
hard to go wrong with so many unique, artful options. Handmade jewelry, colorful
scarves, aromatic candles, ornate picture frames and spa items make wonderful
presents for every occasion, and that’s just a fraction of Paper Doll’s selection.
Rivington brings in new, exciting products all the time. “It’s why people choose
locally owned businesses over big-box stores,” he explains. “You come here when
you want something special and hand-picked.”

BEST IMPORTED GOODS STORE
Cost Plus World Market
1685 28th St., Boulder, 303.938.0757, www.worldmarket.com
The origins of Cost Plus World Market are humble enough: In
1958, a well-traveled businessman decided to sell a shipload of
hand-woven wicker from a pier. When his furniture sold out in
a few days, he decided he was on to something. Cost Plus was
born, selling items at cost, plus 10 percent (thus the name).
Although the store is a national chain, its spirited atmosphere
and eclectic offerings make it a natural for our local audience.
Shopping is an adventure here, with products from around the
globe, like jute rugs from India, sculptures from Kenya, towels
from Turkey and a huge selection of imported gourmet food
and wines. For many of us there’s no substitute for British tea,
Italian pastas and sauces, Australian Vegemite, French wine,
Jamaican spices and German meats. Cost Plus satisfies our
worldly appetites and then some.

Whether you’re running, walking, skipping or hopping, wearing the right shoes can make all the

the needle-seeking service you need to get moving. The specialty running store has a broad
selection of running and casual shoes, and it was the first running store in the country to offer
free video gait analysis to customers. Here’s how it works: you walk or run on a treadmill in front
of a camera, one of Boulder Running Company’s expert employees analyzes the tape to see what
your feet and arches are doing during each stride, and then, armed with that information, you
work together to find the perfect shoe for your specific anatomy and chosen activities. It’s easy
to see why Boulder Running Company has long been a favorite of local athletes as well as the

“We try to recognize people and
remember their dogs’ names,” says P.C.’s
Pantry owner Mary Lee Withers. “Not
many cats come into the store,” she adds
quickly, lest we think she is slighting
felines. “But for the dogs who visit, we try
to remember names and their favorite
treats and toys.” This small detail is
illustrative of the level of service P.C.’s
Pantry provides. Withers and her loyal
staff, all of whom have been with the
company for a minimum of five years, are
true animal lovers. “We really enjoy what
we do and feel that we are here to serve
the dogs and cats,” she asserts. From
professionally baked biscuits, meatloaves

toys and accessories, a pet couldn’t ask for
more than having owners who shop here.
P.C.’s Pantry prides itself on supporting
animals wherever they live. For example,
just last month the store raised money for
Big Dogs Huge Paws, a rescue group that
finds homes for giant breeds of dogs.

BEST LIQUOR STORE
Liquor Mart
1750 15th St., Boulder, 303.449.3374, www.liquormart.com
General manager Jack Stoakes credits the founders of Liquor Mart for creating the company’s roadmap
to success: selection, service and value. “That was back in 1968, and those things sustain us today,” he
says. The selection at Liquor Mart is unarguably impressive. The store’s 30,000 square feet houses more
than 1,500 beer products, more than 70 brands of keg beer, virtually every brand and type of liquor
available and more than 6,000 varieties of wine. Should you need a roadmap to a particular spirit or an
expert recommendation, Liquor Mart’s service is second-to-none. “You hear about employers saying, ‘I
can't find good help!’ You’ll never hear that coming from my lips,” asserts Stoakes. “We get great help.
And our people stay with us; the average tenure here is about 15 years.” Liquor Mart also delivers on
value, offering low prices overall as well as daily case discounts and weekly coupons. You’ll find details on
all these offers at www.liquormart.com; you’ll also find Liquor Mart’s new online store, where you can
not only browse the store’s huge selection, you can buy it and have it delivered.

BEST PLACE TO BUY MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
Robb’s Boulder Music
2691 30th St., Boulder, 303.443.8448, www.robbsmusic.com
Robb’s Boulder Music has been enabling the dreams of local musicians for 30 years. Big names
like Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Wendy Woo and the Samples got their start with
instruments from Robb’s. But the history of the place rests squarely on the shoulders of the
thousands of unknowns who have patronized the store, too, the ones who saw a shiny axe in
the window and decided, “That has to be mine.” For green and experienced musicians alike,
those who live here and those just passing through, Robb’s offers a haven of hands-on
experimentation with the best instruments in the business, as well as a friendly staff of
musically minded individuals to help you find your signature sound. “We are constantly
adding new and great products to our inventory that people want, need and enjoy,” says
musician and owner Seth Goodman. Robb’s new 30th Street location has a complete
percussion department as well as lots of new guitar, bass, live sound, keyboard and accessory
products. And, says Goodman, be sure to check out what’s new in the music lesson, rental and
repair departments.

BEST HARDWARE STORE AND BEST LOCALLY OWNED STORE
McGuckin Hardware
2525 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder, 303.443.1822, www.mcguckin.com
McGuckin Hardware stocks more than 200,000 items in 18 departments, including hardware, tools,
housewares, camping gear, sporting goods, electronics, pet supplies, eco-friendly products, fireplaces,
flowers, gifts, and school and office supplies. Don’t get the wrong idea though; McGuckin is anything but
a generic, impersonal warehouse. It’s a 60,000-square-foot embodiment of our community’s essence. “Our
product mix is geared to being located in Boulder,” says marketing manager Randy Barker. “Being
independently owned allows us to react to our customers’ needs immediately. There’s no corporate office
that needs to be consulted.” The owners are on the floor every day, taking note of customer preferences so
inventory can be tailored to best meet their wants and needs. Also on the floor are the green vested heroes
of McGuckin, the ones who can find the light bulb, hinge pin or nontoxic paint that has eluded you at
every other store in town. “The key to that level of service is the longevity of our staff,” explains Barker.
“We have a strong core of employees who have worked in the store for 10, and some even up to 40, years.”

BEST SPORTING GOODS STORE
AND BEST OUTDOOR RECREATION STORE
Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI)
1789 28th St., Boulder. 303.583.9970, www.rei.com
Shopping at REI is flat-out fun. “It has to do with us being a
cooperative, so there’s a sense of belonging,” explains Boulder’s assistant
store manager, Anna Ransdell. “This is a place where people come to
hang out on the weekends.” The outdoor gear cooperative and its
knowledgeable employees are passionate about what they provide: the
means for experiencing, exploring and enjoying the great outdoors.
Around every corner is a must-have jacket, tent, kayak, climbing rope,
snowboard or other piece of tantalizingly shiny gear. What’s the latest
must-have item from REI? Check out the Novara FlyBy Shuttle Foldable
Bike, suggests Ransdell, a bike that folds up to the size of a small duffel
bag. It has great potential, she says, “especially for bus commuters. A lot
of time there’s no room on the bike racks. So what do you do with your
bike? Fold it up and bring it on with you.” The FlyBy is like everything
at REI: simultaneously ultra functional and ultra cool.

Champion Windows, Siding & Patio Rooms
877.221.0770 or 303.499.7800, www.championwindow.com
The slogan really says it all: “We build it. We install it. We stand behind it.” Champion Windows
has been providing factory direct products, service and pricing to our state since 1997. Because
the windows are made in Colorado by Coloradans, they are designed and constructed with our
climate and altitude in mind. The company also shares our concern for the environment;
Champion windows are 35 percent more energy-efficient in winter and 41 percent more energy-
efficient in summer than standard dual-pane glass windows. They are tested by the American
Architectural Manufacturer’s Association, certified by the National Fenestration Rating Council
and are Energy Star
®
compliant. For these reasons as well as the company’s free lifetime warranty
on materials and installation, more than 40,000 Front Range residents have Champion windows.

Innovative Openings
1672 30th St., Boulder, 303.449.6465, www.innovativeopenings.com
Innovative Openings has been artfully covering Boulder County’s windows since 1980. The
locally owned, independently operated company sells hundreds of solutions – solar screens,
cellular shades, wood shutters, draperies, Roman shades, vertical blinds and many more – but
it’s the people that make the difference. “A lot of employees have been with us a long time: 10
years, 25 years,” explains co-owner Dave Friedlander. “It takes a long time to get the experience
necessary to be an expert in all the products we sell; we try hard to retain our employees for
the long-term.” Part of that effort includes providing as many opportunities for local staff as
possible. Currently, Innovative Openings’ most popular products are solar screen shades,
transparent coverings that reflect and absorb sunlight without blocking the view. “The
motorized solar screens are manufactured by our wholesale manufacturer Insolroll in
Louisville, where our corporate office is located,” says Friedlander. “It’s the fastest-growing part
of the window covering industry, and we make them right here.”
