EATS, DRINKS & ENTERTAINMENT
BEST ASIAN RESTAURANT Chey Thuy
2655 28th St., Boulder, 303.442.1700, www.chezthuy.com
Since 1993, perennial favorite Chez Thuy has brought the lively flavors of Vietnamese,
Chinese, Thai and Indonesian cooking to hungry Boulder diners. Chez Thuy’s chefs use
fresh cilantro, basil, lemongrass, tamarind, ginger, coconut, pineapple and mango to create
an exciting menu that is perfect for sharing in a group. Order up a hot, spicy soup and some
crunchy spring rolls to get started. Many appetizers are served traditional-style with rice
papers to wrap your own ingredients at your table and enjoy with nuoc mam, the house
dipping sauce. Vegetarians like the great selection of entrees, fromthe spicy Buddha Delight
(Malai Chay) to more mellow Lo Mein with tofu and vegetables. Order a Thai Iced Tea or
Coffee, or go crazy and order Fried Bananas Flambee for the perfect finish to your evening.
Thank you to “Twee” and her staff for bringing us the best in Asian cooking, seven days a

BEST BAKERY Breadworks Café
2644 Broadway, Boulder, 303.444.5667, www.breadworks.net
Connoisseurs of crust, fans of the flakiest dough and supporters of stone-ground organic baking count on Breadworks Café for their
morning croissant, their lunchtime Panini and a loaf of artisan bread to go. And it’s been that way since Breadworks first opened its
doors on Valentine’s Day, 1995. North Boulder neighbors drop by to enjoy the scene from one of the outdoor tables or share a tabletop
inside. “We have never lost our focus on providing quality baked goods at affordable prices,” says Larry Domnitz, who owns and operates
the popular bakery with his wife Colleen, a classically trained executive chef whose resume includes a stint at Chez Panisse. “Colleen use
to come in and buy bread from me,” Larry recalls. Destiny took its course, and since then the duo has grown the business to four times
its original size, with a wood-burning pizza oven, daily specialty sandwiches, soups and salads. Got Cupcake Fever? Choose yours from
the daily assortment, or custom order a dozen for a special occasion. We could go on, but that would just be icing on the cake.

BEST BAR AND BEST ITALIAN RESTAURANT
Carelli’s of Boulder Ristorante Italiano
645 30th St., Boulder, 303.938.9300, www.carellis.com
If you’re looking for la dolce vita served on a plate, set your GPS for Carelli’s, where the traditions of hospitality
and delicious Italian food are alive and well, with a contemporary twist. Trained as a chef by trade, your host
Greg Carelli claims there’s “no secret” to the restaurant’s success. “We’ve been family owned and operated for 19
years, and it really just comes down to hard work and perseverance,” he says. “We keep our menu interesting.
Every night our chef does a fresh fish special. One night it might be Crab and Lobster Cakes, or it could be Pan
Seared Sea Bass fromour special fresh seafood provider in Hawaii. We have also added a newGluten-Free menu,”
that features Build-Your-Own-Pizzas, Grilled Salmon, and chicken or steak entrees. A carefully selected wine list
focuses on wines that deliver great value, whether you choose a high-reputation appellation or moderately priced
label. The perfect dinner deserves a stellar selection of drinks to go with it, and Boulder County voters also
designated Carelli’s as home to the Best Bar. The new Osteria bar has quickly established its reputation for
dramatic but comfortable ambiance, tasty cocktails and live music on Thursdays and Saturdays. Share an end-
of-day toast and appetizers with friends by the gorgeous outdoor fire pit surrounded with pillows and cushions.
“Cin Cin to Carelli’s!” we say.

What’s the secret ingredient behind an unforgettable event? A Spice of Life! Since 1987, co-owners David Rubin and Dan Bruckner have wowed us with their special approach to catering, bringing
together exquisite culinary treats, spectacular presentation and a dedicated staff that exceed your expectations, every time. “We bring passion and enthusiasm to every event,” Rubin says, from
intimate get-togethers for 30 to the ultimate street party of 3,000 people celebrating the grand opening of the Twenty Ninth Street Mall. Three certified chefs do a lot of their magic on site, so the
food is served at its best. Budgets are a little tighter this year, Rubin explains, but Spice of Life’s team can work with you to put on a party people won’t forget. We like their community spirit and
commitment to “Zero Waste” practices, too. Is there anything they don’t do well? “We’re not very good at cutting back on our quality,” Rubin says with a laugh.

BEST BARBECUE The Rib House
1801 13th St., Boulder, 303.442.RIBS; 1920 S. Coffman St., Longmont, 303.485.6988;
www.theribhouse.com
Saucy, sweet and spicy! That’s the way we like our barbecue, and The Rib House is your favorite
place for authentic, Kansas City-style ribs, sausage, brisket and succulent sides, with the kind of
friendly service that makes you come back. Kansas City natives Merry Ann and Tracy Webb came
to Colorado in 1989 and immediately started missing the classic barbecue restaurants they left
behind. They opened their first Rib House in July 2001 and Colorado barbecue has never been
the same since. “There’s nothing baby-sized about our Baby Back Ribs,” Tracy says. “They’re so
tender, you grab the rib and the meat falls off the bone. Honestly, they’re so good, our ribs have
turned vegetarians into meat eaters,” he says with a laugh. Your order is served with your choice
of four warm sauces on the side, from mild to fire to match your taste buds. “The hotter sauces
aren’t just about burning your mouth,” Tracy explains, “they deliver lots of flavor.” Side orders
make it a meal, and you can choose from BBQ beans, red-skinned mashers, coleslaw, chipotle
potato salad, and the famous Cheesy Corn Bake. Finish with an order of cobbler, key lime pie or
a fudgy brownie, just because you deserve it!

BEST HAPPY HOUR AND BEST OUTDOOR DINING AND BEST APPETIZERS
Mediterranean Restaurant (The Med)
1002 Walnut St., Boulder, 303.444.5335, www.themedboulder.com
Hats off to The Mediterranean Restaurant for achieving the hat trick of three “Bests” this year! Locals just call it “The Med”
but the short moniker is deceptive for a restaurant that delivers so much. The Med is a longtime favorite destination for
Happy Hour aficionados who enjoy the extensive menu of tasty appetizers, tapas and pizzas. Order up a frosty microbrew, a
sangria or handmade Martini so your other hand has something to do. Unwind, chat up a new friend. There’s no need to
hurry; this “hour” lasts from 3 to 6:30 p.m., seven days a week. The cheery patio, festooned with flowers, a fountain and
colorful tiles, is a special getaway retreat with a hint of the Côte d’Azur, just steps from the bustle of downtown. “We’ve spent
a lot of effort on the aesthetics of our outdoor dining,” says manager Mike Gleason. “It’s a comfortable space; people are
willing to wait a bit longer to enjoy the ambiance of our patio.” Eating light, or just want to experiment with some new
dishes? The Med’s appetizer menu awaits! Taste the sunny influences of Italian, Spanish, French and Greek cuisine, brought
together in the form of crisp Calamari, Gambas (Catalan-style shrimp), Polenta Fritti, Prosciutto and Melon or Caprese salad.
Order a selection, share, compare – and order again!

Glacier Home Made Ice Cream & Gelato

Longmont, 303.485.883; www.glacierhomemadeicecream.com
For even the most dedicated ice cream maven, Glacier presents quite a challenge: 800 flavors! A top seller is fresh Colorado peach, about which
owner Mark Mallen says, “We’ll process over 1,000 pounds of peaches a year from the Western Slope to make ice cream, gelato and sorbet.”
In business only since 2001, Glacier was recently chosen one of the 10 best ice cream stores in America by forbestraveler.com. “We’re very
grateful to the Boulder County community,” says Mallen. “They recognize quality products and have given us great support. We put quality
ahead of profit; the profit comes later.” He credits his employees: “We employ great people – the ice cream makers and the counter people. We
look for employees who are personable, because customers come in who are, 1., already in a good mood or, 2., want to be in a better mood.”
Mallen works with other local companies and chefs to create unique culinary experiences – like honey peanut butter ice cream made from
Justin’s nut butter, a dinner at Restaurant 4580, pairing each course with a different ice cream, and an “ultimate chocolate” dessert for Radda.
“Boulder is such a great community, with locally owned, independent businesses. I hope they continue; we need to keep supporting the locals.”

1397 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.545.6800
1107 13th St., Boulder, 303.448.1200
No matter how you stack them, Salvaggio’s sandwiches are
a true culinary achievement. Start with fresh bread, baked
from scratch daily. Add your choice of cheese and a
generous portion of meat, garnish with crisp veggies and
top it all with your favorite dressing. “We don’t skimp on
the portions here,” says general manager Maria Gonzales,
“and our staff works hard to keep it fun and friendly while
building you a great sandwich.” All side orders are made in
house as well, from the macaroni and potato salads to the
tasty coleslaw. The most popular orders include the Prime
Rib, the Italian and Turkey sandwiches, or order your very
own custom masterpiece with your choice of ingredients.
Oddest order? “I think that would be the Chicken Salad
with Italian Sausage sauce,” Gonzales says. And don’t forget
to add a homemade brownie or cookie to top off your
order. Whether they’re creating one single sandwich or 700
sandwiches for a CU football event, you know you’re in for
fresh taste, generous portions and a bit of friendly ’tude,
served up Salvaggio’s style.

BEST COFFEEHOUSE
Vic’s
2680 Broadway, Boulder, 303.440.8209
3305 30th St., Boulder, 303.440.2918
801 Main St., Louisville, 303.666.1402
700 Tenacity, Suite 101, Prospect New Town,
Longmont, 303.485.6791
At Vic’s, first and foremost it’s about the
coffee. Good coffee, dark roasted and
served pretty much anyway you want it.
The baristas are friendly in a non-
corporate way and keep things moving.
Locally baked scones, pastries and
muffins go great with your cuppa Joe.
Did we mention there’s free Wi-Fi? Every
great coffeehouse has its scene, and Vic’s
version is hustle, bustle and laid-back
cool, all at once. The tables out front are
popular for meeting friends or taking a
caffeine break while you’re out walking
your canine friends. Inside, great
American novels and business plans are
being written on a medley of laptops,
two chic ladies are catching up on
neighborhood news, and one young man
in a fedora is scrutinizing the local
artwork on the walls. Owner Mike
Hilliker says that Vic’s success is all about
“good product, good service, good
customers and a good staff.” Good
enough to be the best.

BEST VEGETARIAN RESTAURANT
Leaf Vegetarian Restaurant
2010 16th St., Boulder, 303.442.1485, www.leafvegetarianrestaurant.com
When Lenny Martinelli was a vegetarian about 20 years ago, the
standard restaurant offering for non-meat eaters was roasted vegetables
and potatoes. He opened Leaf Vegetarian Restaurant a couple years ago
to do something more distinctive and interesting. “It’s our fifth
restaurant,” he notes, “and they all have a vegetarian component.” His
other eateries are well known to locals: Aji, the Boulder Dushanbe Tea
House, the Huckleberry Restaurant in Louisville, and the Naropa Café.
“We are the only vegetarian restaurant in Boulder. I think enough
people know about us, know that the food is really good, and different.
Fifty percent of our customers are not vegetarians; they come because
our food is good. Omnivores come in and eat our food and walk out
saying ‘Wow.’” Some favorites are stuffed poblano pepper with
chocolate mole, jerk tempeh with coconut plaintain sauce, and for
dessert, vegan carrot cake and green tea creme brulee. “We always have
homemade pie with a vegan crust, and we offer a flourless chocolate
cake for the non-wheat eaters. We provide for people with allergies. We
really try to please.” Besides chef Steven Dustin and managing partner
Gerry Manning, who puts together the list of organic, biodynamic and
sustainably grown wines, wife Sara Martinelli is “the tea queen” for the
restaurants. You can enjoy organic beer and smoothies, too, and a good
selection of vegan food. “We are introducing at least one course that’s
raw,” Martinelli says. Leaf and its four sister restaurants share in the
ownership of a local organic farm. “At the 63rd Street Farm, our
produce is grown organically and biodynamically, and we are able to be
involved in the agricultural process every step of the way. We can ensure
the quality of our produce by working hand-in-hand with our farmers
to determine which crops to plant, and we carefully craft our menus to
coincide with the natural harvest periods.”

With all the pizza places around, what makes Abo’s stand out? “Quality ingredients – special
dough and special sauce made daily just for Abo’s,” according to manager Ben Bishop. “Also,
our professional pie makers, professional because of the quality they assure and the pride they
take in their work.” It’s true, the dough is made fresh daily and hand tossed according to
Neopolitan New York tradition, and, oh, that genuine Neopolitan crust – benissimo! It is
classically thin with a bumpy texture, bubbly, pliable but firm to fold over. Abo’s Pizza still
adheres to the original quality ingredients of its first pie, which hit Boulder in 1977. The
sauce is a proprietary blend fashioned after the legendary Rocky Graziano family sauce recipe.
Founder Steve Abo was trained in New York pizza restaurants owned by the once-famous
boxer. Abo’s continues to use high quality tomatoes from the same supplier year after year.
The freshest vegetables are delivered and chopped daily. They use mozzarella cheese that won’t
slide off the crust. A slice of Abo’s pizza is only $3, and the restaurant offers lunch specials.
Bishop says, “Thanks to all our fans,” and notes, “We have quite a few regulars who come in
three to five days a week. We know them by their names and their slices!”

BEST SEAFOOD RESTAURANT
Jax Fish House
928 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.444.1811, www.jaxfishhouseboulder.com
Once again Jax takes top honors for the best seafood in this land-locked county. Much of the
credit goes to world-class, award-winning chef Hosea Rosenberg, who believes that flavor is
paramount. With that in mind he creates innovative dishes that capture the essence of fresh fish
and fresh produce – whenever possible using produce from local farmers as well as organic and
natural products. “Another important reason for our success is our loyal staff of 8, 10, and even
15 years, when the restaurant opened,” says manager Lee Sandoval. “They’ve helped build a
clientele and atmosphere; everyone here provides service. And the food is very fresh and healthy,
with deliveries every day.” Jax’s famous Raw Bar features a variety of fresh oysters, clams, chilled
crabs and lobsters, all flown in daily. Favorite dishes are Colorado striped bass and Nicoise olive-
dusted Alaskan halibut. Blue plate specials are popular: jambalaya on Sunday, old school tuna
on Monday, New Zealand bluenose on Tuesday and paella on Wednesday. Uniquely Jax is the
brick wall where well over a thousand customers have written their names (some over other
customers’ names), and the “Wall of Fame'” lining the bar that is covered with photos from
alumni, employees and regulars showcasing their catch of the day.

BEST TAKE-OUT FOOD
Jimmy & Drew’s
Delicatessen
2855 28th St., Boulder, 303.447.3354
This is a real-deal deli: they cook
everything from scratch. And they deliver
anywhere in Boulder County. Jimmy
Eggers, who created the eponymous deli
with Drew Marx, says customers recognize
and appreciate “the quality of the food.
There are so many sandwich shops around
Boulder, but we are a true deli. We smoke
our salmon, roast our prime ribs, make our
cole slaw and potato salad ourselves. It’s all
about the food.” They offer favorites from
around the country, like Philly cheese
steaks and New York-style pastrami and
corned beef sandwiches. Every night a
different homestyle dinner is featured –
priced at a mere $10. And you have to try
“Jimmy’s Favorite” – a Reuben
(traditionally made with corned beef,
Swiss cheese and sauerkraut on rye bread)
that shuns the bread in favor of two
oversized potato latkes (pancakes, for the
uninitiated). It was dubbed one of the
“Best Sandwiches in America” by Esquire
magazine. Watch for a new book by David
Sax coming out in November, called “Save
the Deli,” which lauds Jimmy & Drew’s.
Pretty much everything is on the take-out
menu, and you can come in and pick up
your order, or avail yourself of the county-
wide delivery service.

BEST INDIAN RESTAURANT The Taj
2630 Baseline Road, Boulder, 303.494.5216, www.tajcolorado.com
Serving the freshest and healthiest food – that is what motivates Taj owners and husband-and-wife team, Vhim Rai and Kamala Ghimire,
to work 16 to 18 hours a day. “We have many long-time customers,” Ghimire says, “some who have been coming since we opened The Taj
in February 1996.” Rai does the cooking, along with several chefs he trained. “I, too, do some cooking and put in seasonal vegetables
myself,” says Ghimire. Her husband supervises the abundant, popular buffet. “To make the food healthier,” says Rai, “we use less fat and
heavy cream, just the bare minimum. Some people come every day for lunch, because the food is light. And we use absolutely no MSG at
all.” They are introducing gluten-free and dairy-free Indian food. At their year-old restaurant, Mantra Indian Cuisine (1630B 30th St.,
Boulder, 303.444.1809, www.mantracolorado.com), you can sample masala dosa, a popular south Indian gluten-free crepe. While featuring
a popular buffet at lunch and dinner, Mantra is also a “sit-down and be served” kind of place – at affordable prices. Try “thali,” platters of
little samplers of tasty Indian specialties. The favorite dishes of Taj customers are chicken masala, tandoori chicken, and saag paneer
(homemade cheese cubes cooked with Indian creamed spinach). “For the Tandoori, we cook our meat fresh, so it is moist and tender,”
Ghimire says. She also notes that they use healthy options such as brown rice and steamed rice with no oil, steamed vegetables, and salad
with fresh-cut vegetables. Another customer favorite is the homemade chai. “Customers come even from Evergreen for it,” she says. “It’s
our secret recipe. We have a lot of experience playing with the spices.” Winners of the Boulder County Gold People’s Choice Award many
times, this husband and wife are quick to express their gratitude for the honor: “From the bottom of our hearts we would like to thank the
Boulder County community and all our customers. We’re very grateful to be winners of the Boulder County Gold Award again. It’s a

The The Empire Lounge & Restaurant
816 Main St., Louisville, 303.665.2521, www.theempirerestaurant.com
After less than two years in business, The Empire Lounge & Restaurant has already become a Louisville
fixture. “What we tried to create was a neighborhood restaurant filled with regulars,” says co-owner and
general manager Brendan McManus. “And that’s what we’ve accomplished.” Indeed, locals have been
flocking to The Empire since it opened, clamoring for its simultaneously accessible and sophisticated fare,
impressive wine selection, classic cocktails and lounge atmosphere. Whether you’re looking for the most
sublime deviled eggs you’ve ever eaten, melt-in-your-mouth gourmet delights like the Colorado lamb and
onion brochette, fresh and unique salads, or a berry crumble that would make Granny blush, The Empire
Lounge & Restaurant is your ideal destination. And you can feel good about what you’re eating. “Food-wise,
we have as much local and organic product as we can,” explains McManus. The menu changes frequently
and there are daily specials to highlight the seasonality of the food.

Ask Rose Fuller which menu item is the customer favorite, and she answers
without hesitation: Eggs New Orleans (fried eggplant slices with creole sauce,
poached eggs and hollandaise). “Though our eggs Benedict will give any other
eggs Benedict in town a run for their money,” the Boulder Lucile’s principal host
adds with a laugh, and then pauses for a moment. “You know, there are lots of
great dishes, but people come to us for our biscuits and jam, our beignets and
coffee.” The truth of the matter is you can’t go wrong. If any of you reading this
haven’t yet experienced Lucile’s, there’s nothing left to say. You simply must go
to understand the distinctively decadent, immediately addictive creole cuisine.
For the rest of us who regularly go out of our way for the chicory coffee, Eggs
Sardou and the best grits this side of the Mississippi, here’s something else to love
about Lucile’s: The restaurant started a farm in Niwot to grow its own food.
“Our daily and weekend specials have been fresh from the farm,” enthuses
Fuller. “We’re on our way to being more organic and self-sustainable.” And I’m
on my way to Lucile’s. See you there.

BEST PLACE FOR A ROMANTIC DINNER Flagstaff House Restaurant
1138 Flagstaff Road, Boulder, 303.442.4640, www.flagstaffhouse.com
The stars twinkling over the foothills, the breathtaking views of Boulder, the slightly thinner air – the Flagstaff House’s
mountainside location is cause enough to get weak in the knees. Add that special someone as well as exquisite food, drinks and
service to the mix and forget about it; you’re Cupid fodder. Romance is part of the package at the Flagstaff House. “A lot of
proposals happen here,” says general manager Scott Monette, who recommends popping the question during the first course
instead of waiting until dessert. “We find people enjoy the experience much more that way,” he adds with a knowing smile. Truly,
it would be a shame to spend a night at this premier dining establishment distracted by nerves when you could be looking deep
into your loved one’s eyes, drinking in the ambiance and a delectable Cabernet Sauvignon, savoring a stolen kiss and butter
poached Maine lobster. The Flagstaff House’s seasoned staff goes out of its way to make every night remarkable for its customers,
whether the moment calls for crystal glasses or party hats. “We’re a family-run operation and have been around for 37 years,” says
Monette. “It’s great to be a part of Boulder and part of the environment for so many people’s special occasions.”

Our readers aren’t the only ones who have noticed
the fine offerings from Oskar Blues Cajun Grill &
Brewery. The brewpub was recently named one of
the top 50 Colorado companies to watch by the
Colorado Office of Economic Development and
International Trade, and its quaffables and edibles
have been praised by Food & Wine, Men’s Health,
Beer, All About Beer and Penthouse magazines as
well as the Washington Post. And that’s only this
summer’s set of accolades. All this national
attention is fantastic, but keeping things down-
home is what Oskar Blues does best. Here you’ll
find hearty comfort food and plenty of it. Start
with a pile of Cajun Catfish Bites then tuck into a
Heatseeker Burger or a Big Ol’ Phatty Pepperoni
(the most pepperoni you have ever seen on one
pizza, claims the menu). Be sure to save room for
Oskar’s world-famous Dump Cake and, of course,

the kind of place that makes you want to linger. With more than 200 wines to choose from and
fresh, locally produced fare inspired by the cuisine of Friuli, Italy (like shaved Heritage Foods

The Boulder Creek Festival had another wildly successful and fun-filled run over Memorial Day weekend this year. Thousands
flocked to the downtown section of Boulder Creek (from 9th Street to 14th Street, between Canyon Boulevard and Arapahoe
Avenue) to enjoy performances, activities, food and entertainment. For 23 years, the festival has been the unofficial kickoff to
summer in Boulder. There’s something for everyone among the 10 different event areas and 500 vendors in attendance, from
holistic health to hip hop dance, bluegrass music to brew appreciation, children’s play to fine art. And let’s not forget the Great
Duck Race, which provides endless excitement for participants, a visual feast as 5,000 rubber ducks go barreling down the
creek, and money for the city of Boulder Parks & Recreation department’s EXPAND program. Next year promises to be
another community celebration to remember. Mark your calendar now for Saturday, May 29 through Monday, May 31, 2010.

Boulder Theater is a landmark – it opened in 1906 and has
showcased everything from opera productions and silent
movies to blues legends and indie trailblazers. The building
has been renovated several times to fit the needs of its
audiences over the years, the most recent changes having to
do with sound quality and expanding the theater’s
capabilities as a multi-use facility. What hasn’t changed is the
venue’s overarching appeal, with its hand-painted murals
and fresco ceilings. And diversity of talent is still the name of
the game. In October, Boulder Theater will play host to
national recording artists Aimee Mann and Dinosaur, Jr.,
local favorite DeVotchka, the highly anticipated Dancing
with Boulder Stars event, Teton Gravity Research’s latest ski
and snowboard film, and many other can’t-miss shows.

“We are proud to offer our guests a fun dining experience
in a kid- and family-friendly atmosphere where kids, and
adults, can be kids,” says Red Robin president Eric
Houseman. Adult patrons love the gourmet burgers,
bottomless steak fries, salads, desserts and unique drinks

crayons and the genial mascot “Red” go a long way toward
making eating out with little ones an enjoyable endeavor.
The menu seals the deal – mac and cheese, chicken
fingers, cheeseburgers, corn dogs, pizza, all the favorites of
the under-12 set, plus plenty of healthy side item choices.
Red Robin does more than serve the kids in its restaurants,
though. It serves children across the nation through its U-

continued support of the National Center for Missing &

He explains that the tab is higher in the Boulder and Longmont branches because “we pay rent. In Lafayette, it’s my building.”

The Kitchen

Just what exactly is American cuisine, and what’s cooking in our melting pot these days? “Our focus is on locally produced,
seasonal ingredients, prepared simply so that the expression of the food comes through,” explains Kate Kaufman, manager
at community bistro The Kitchen. “Our produce and our meat come from local farmers and ranchers, who are our friends
as well.” Chefs Hugo Matheson and Kimbal Musk have created a menu that skillfully moves from starter plates of Poached
Salmon Salad or Pork Terrine to enticing entrees like Roasted Pork Loin or Pan Seared Lamb Sirloin. Weekend brunch
(you can even order a Full English Breakfast!) is served until 2 p.m. – the perfect way to slow-start your day. Not a morning
person? If the nighttime is the right time for your socializing, join friends for dinner under the chandeliers in the dining
room. Or cozy up to the counter with a special friend and share a couple of yummy desserts and a tawny port. The vibe
is tastefully mellow, a happy mashup of visual palette and “flavor” palate that makes The Kitchen your choice for Best

Happy Noodle House

Despite these tough economic times, this new restaurant, which opened Feb. 13,
is thriving. “It’s the right concept at the right time,” says general manager John-
Mark Larter. “It’s also the right price point. You can come in for dinner, tax, tip
and beer for $16.” Expect fresh, unique and affordable Asian-inspired cuisine
paired with attentive and friendly service and classic, “old-school” handcrafted
cocktails. The signature dish is a big bowl of ramen noodles, with the chef ’s own
chicken broth, and chicken or pork and veggies. And there are lots of other
wholesome and creative dishes to try. Larter encourages families to come and feel
right at home at Happy Noodle: “The food comes quickly, in less than 10
minutes, and with the openness of the space and community seating, it’s a
rambunctious restaurant on some nights – filled with families, serious diners, and
cocktail drinkers.” Once the kitchen closes for the day, the bar takes center stage
and the place is transformed into a kind of Prohibition-era speakeasy.
Conveniently, Happy Noodle offers take-out, too.

Boulder’s Dinner Theatre has been wowing us with live, Broadway-quality performances paired with
fine dining since 1977. “It’s a complete evening of entertainment,” explains artistic director Michael
J. Duran. “Our audience gets a good meal and fantastic theater, and they get to meet the stars of the
show.” These stars shine brightly; members of the company have performed on stages nationwide.
Some have been with Boulder’s Dinner Theatre for 20 years, and some are new to the group. Some
have Academy Award nominations and some are just getting their feet wet in the industry. But
veterans and fresh talent alike pour their hearts into every performance. Come see for yourself; the

BEST DESSERT Cheesecake Factory
1401 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.546.0222, www.thecheesecakefactory.com
Evelyn Overton was a lot of things – a wonderful wife and mother, an active member of her community, an organizer and
a doer – but she is best known for her contribution to the advancement of dessert. She created the recipe around which
The Cheesecake Factory was built, the cheesecake to end all cheesecakes. In the late 1940s, Evelyn’s cheesecakes were so
popular with friends, her husband Oscar’s business associates and local bake sales that she and Oscar opened a small bakery.
Through persistence and hard work, the Overton family’s business grew from one singularly lip-smacking recipe at one
small Detroit location to today’s Cheesecake Factory, with 50 different desserts at each of its 150 locations nationwide. If
you’re not in the mood for cheesecake, try one of the decadent chocolate cakes or ice cream sundaes. But with a name like
The Cheesecake Factory, it’s hard not to be in the mood. There are more than 30 legendary cheesecakes from which to
choose, including lemon raspberry cream, white chocolate caramel macadamia nut, tiramisu, Key lime and, of course, the
original. Thanks Evelyn.

employees, and I am proud to work with people who have such high integrity.” Robichaud grew
