not too long ago, but there is a major difference between this world and our own: Humans not only cover the land, but also inhabit the seas. Interbred royal families control the nations of Europe, but these dynasties are at risk from illegitimate half-deepsman children, born illegally and raised secretly, in hiding. Henry is one such child, a feral waif abandoned by his mother and almost immediately adopted as a pawn of power. Anne, on the other hand, is a born princess finding the role for which she’s trained all her life falling apart around her. It will fall to these two to change the fate of their country, and to find a new way of reconciling the deepsmen and the landsmen to one another. This mermaid world is not about singing fish and dudes with tridents: It is savage, very close to the natural rhythms. Deepsmen lives are harsh, unsentimental and often brutally short, yet not without beauty. Some of the book’s best passages occur in the opening pages, describing Henry’s transition from the sensual, immediate undersea world to a very different life on land. Things as common as straight walls and corners are bizarre and frightening, and the simple act of moving around in an environment

that doesn’t catch him when he falls is a completely new and often painful experience. His adjustment is as much conceptual as physical. Henry is not exactly a pleasant guy, but he still manages to be sympathetic, a child of two worlds, unwanted by either but determined to force his way in. Anne is easier to relate to, and watching her grow a backbone over the course of the book is highly satisfying. Between the convincing characters and the well-built world they inhabit, “In Great Waters” is an excellent choice for readers looking for a smart, engaging fantasy read.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver • The skateboard was invented in California in the 1950s by surfers who wanted to continue their favorite activity even when they weren’t in the water. *** • The decadence of France under Napoleon’s rule is legendary, and the luxury wasn’t reserved solely for people. It was not uncommon for pet dogs of the wealthy nobility to have their fur waxed and styled with hot rollers in imitation of Princess Eugenie, the wife of Napoleon III.

Private RYLEY VOSSLER, son of Dave and Sandy Vossler recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. Vossler successfully completed 12 weeks of training designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally. Vossler and his fellow recruits began their training each day at 5 a.m., by running three miles and performing calisthenics. In addition to the physical conditioning program, Vossler spent numerous hours in classroom and field assignments, which included learning first aid, uniform regulations, combat water survival, marksmanship, hand-tohand combat and assorted weapons training. They performed close order drill and operated as a small infantry unit during field training. Vossler also received instructions on the Marine Corps’ core values --- honor, courage and commitment, and what the words mean in guiding personal and professional conduct. Vossler and fellow recruits ended the training phase with the Crucible, a 54 hour team effort and problem solving evolution. After graduation from Parris Island, he will be stationed at Camp Geiger in N.C. for School of Infantry. Vossler is a 2009 graduate of Smethport Area High School of Smethport, Pa. f

Cut a piece long enough to cover the diameter of the cake (and then some). Lay it across your line to cut and firmly press down while pulling the ends away from each other. When you get to the bottom, pull out to one side for a perfectly finished cut. • Place a piece of clear tape over the labels of prescriptions as soon as you get them, and verify all information. This will protect the dosing and medication name if the label gets wet or just handled too much. • “If you need to tighten up the screw on a drawer pull or knob, paint it with clear nail polish first. Quickly insert it back in and screw tightly. It will hold in the wood better.” -- P.I. in Alabama (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

WHAT ARE FRIENDS FOR? Get friendly with your consignment shop owner. It pays! As a diehard secondhand shopper, I discovered this accidentally while getting to know my consignment owner as a friend as well as a business owner. Once we knew one another well, the shop owner knew my tastes and my hard-tofit sizes. When things came in which seemed likely choices for me, she would set them aside for me. She was willing to deal on prices because she knew me as a frequent customer. I didn’t buy on every visit, but I looked often because inventory changes frequently. The shop owner would give honest opinions as to how I looked in different things, too. In the meantime, I found a new friend, and that’s the real bargain. -LRR EASY WAY TO MEAL PLANNING I tried for years to get organized about meal preparation, but nothing ever seemed to last. I knew that to save time and money (and my sanity) I needed to plan our meals, but never seemed to find time to do it. Then I realized that I am planning my meals, only at the last minute and one meal at a time. So I started writing down what I served every night (hot dogs with chips, stroganoff with noodles, lasagna and salad, etc.). After three weeks, I reviewed my list and came up with a meal plan. It took a little fine tuning (too many days of spaghetti), but I was amazed! -Kathey in Georgia

Serving Our Local Communities for Over 27 Years. Australian Shepherds and talk to other Aussie owners, all of whom have probably experienced one Aussie behavior or another. Shep is a high-energy herd dog, bred to run all day without tiring. So being inside the house for several hours is probably a bit taxing for him. He’s also an adoptee, a pet that lost one family and gained another, and I’ll bet there’s more than a bit of separation anxiety in that compulsive licking. If possible, have a friend or a professional pet sitter come and walk or play with Shep in the middle of the day while you’re out to work off some of that energy. When you walk in the door, don’t let him lick you at all. Train him in “sit-stay” and use this command every time you come in. Once you are home, take him out for a walk, or ideally, to an open area where he can run to work off that pent-up energy. Pick up training manuals that deal specifically with Aussies and that address anxiety issues. If basic behavioral methods don’t work for Shep, consider consulting a professional trainer to help diagnose and address his behavior. Send your tips, questions and comments to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475, or e-mail them to [email protected]. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta Dog’s Constant Licking Isn’t Just Gratitude DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Help! Three months ago I adopted a wonderful red Australian Shepherd from the shelter. “Shep” is very intelligent and easy to train, but has a very annoying habit: He constantly wants to lick me. My face, hands, neck -- any bare skin area is a target. I thought he was just showing gratitude for being adopted, but it hasn’t diminished. I have a full-time job, so I’m gone about nine hours a day, and as soon as I walk in the door he’s at it. I let him lick me as soon as I walk in the door, but then he won’t stop. What can I do to discourage this? -Nancy H., Bloomfield, N.Y.

DEAR NANCY: First, let me say congratulations on your new pet. Shep sounds like a really great dog. He seems well-behaved and isn’t tearing up the house while you’re gone. The licking, however, is an unacceptable behavior. And because he’s an energetic dog, finding the root cause of his compulsive behavior is very important. Read up on the traits of

SMETHPORT AREA RESIDENTS: Need food? Need clothing? We want to help! Christian Community Services (under Hamlin Bank on Fulton St.). Open Monday through Wednesday 10-11 a.m. No hours Thursday or Friday. tf THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta FALL LAWN CARE The weather’s beginning to cool, and that means it’s time to start preparing the yard for winter. Even if you live in warmer climes, the change of season brings changes to your lawn, such as slower growth. Anticipating and preparing for this change will keep your yard healthy year-round. If you live in a part of the country that sees snow, it’s time to clean and put away lawn furniture (except perhaps cedar furniture, which improves as it weathers). Store it in a place that is protected from water and extreme cold -- such as a tool shed or a corner of the garage -- and cover to protect from spills and dirt. Wait until most of the leaves have fallen from the trees before raking them up -- it’s no use trying to catch them early -- and add to the mulch pile. Your lawn will probably need one or two mowings before winter sets in, but once that last session is done, lay out your gardening tools in the driveway and inspect them for damage. Clean away bits of grass and dirt from the blades and handles, and coat blades with an all-purpose lubricant like 3-in-1 oil. Wooden handles could use a thin coat of linseed oil, or at least make sure they’re clean and dry. Hang gardening tools vertically to store them (a pegboard with hooks is a good investment here). Prepare your lawnmower by draining the gas (store in a proper container away from other chemicals and heat sources), removing the spark plug, cleaning the underside and oiling the blades, and placing in a dry, out-of-the-way corner. Now is a good time to dethatch and reseed bare spots in the lawn, just before the first hard frost. Cover the reseeded area with a light mulch mixture of dry grass clippings, straw and shredded leaves -enough to keep birds from eating most of the seeds, while allowing shoots to poke through come spring. HOME TIP: Plant bulbs (like tulips) now, before the first frost. They’ll remain dormant until spring. Send questions or home-repair tips to [email protected], or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

*On Oct. 3, 2008, FDIC deposit insurance temporarily increased from $100,000 to $250,000 per depositor through Dec. 31, 2013. VETERANS POST by Freddy Groves JUDICIAL UPDATE Two court cases were decided recently, and neither one went in our favor. In the first case, a veteran was sent numerous times in 1947 to the Bikini Atoll, where he was subjected to radiation. Years later he developed serious eye problems, which he blamed on the radiation. He was turned down for disability benefits. On appeal he questioned the competence of the medical expert who testified as an expert witness on radiation. The court decided that there’s no requirement for the Department of Veterans Affairs to prove a doctor’s qualifications. In the second case, a veteran (who was admittedly not a nice guy) had part of his benefits taken by the state of California to pay for a psychiatric hospital stay. The veteran, who’d been ruled incompetent, had a legal guardian - an officer of the hospital. The guardian began giving the veteran a monthly stipend and applied the balance to the ongoing hospital bill. The veteran sued, citing U.S. Code sections that say a veteran’s

benefits cannot be grabbed by creditors. The court decided that the hospital could indeed take the money for ongoing care, since it was a state hospital and not a real creditor. An additional note: It’s the Veterans Service Center manager who determines how much (some or all) of a veteran’s benefits will go for care when that veteran has been deemed incompetent by the VA. *** Scam Alert: The VA has issued an alert concerning a scam with its prescription medicine program. A Difficult Year for Harvick, RCR
For Kevin Harvick, it’s been a rough year. For Harvick’s team, Richard Childress Racing, it’s been a rough year. Harvick and his teammates -Clint Bowyer, Jeff Burton and Casey Mears -- are all trapped outside the Chase for the Sprint Cup, hoping that a victory will earn some attention in a setting where the 12 contenders make everyone else seem irrelevant by comparison. Notwithstanding a recent runnerup finish at Atlanta, Harvick and his No. 29 Shell/Pennzoil Chevrolet have been significantly off their game. A 32nd-place finish in New Hampshire left Harvick 22nd in the Sprint Cup point standings. He’s finished in the top

five only three times all year, and his top-10 finishes number only five. A year ago, all three RCR Chevys (a fourth was added before this season) made the Chase. Harvick, who is from Bakersfield, Calif., finished fourth in the final point standings, but he hasn’t actually won since the 2007 Daytona 500. “Well, our cars have run fairly well for the last seven, eight weeks,” said Harvick, 33. “We just wind up wrecked or something stupid happening for the last little while. Seems like everything that’s been happening has just kind of piled on. “You know, any momentum is in a good ... in a good direction is a positive thing for us. It lets us know that we do remember how to race, just overcome a lot of things and hopefully keep it going.” Harvick made those remarks after the second-place finish on Sept. 6 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Since then, he’s finished ninth at Richmond and 32nd at New Hampshire. Childress, a former driver who enjoyed his greatest success while the late Dale Earnhardt was winning six of his seven

There are a lot of things moving forward, you know. Familes of NASCAR: The Pettys: If there is one name synonymous with stock-car racing and NASCAR in America, it would be the name of Petty. When Lee Petty started his adventures around the short tracks of the South, he quickly made a name for himself as an avid competitor. Winning 54 races out of his Randleman, N.C., shop, he garnered NASCAR championships in 1954, 1958 and 1959. The patriarch of Petty Enterprises won the inaugural Daytona 500 in 1959, having to wait three days to be declared the

victor because of a photo finish. Retiring in 1964 after 427 NASCAR races, he left behind his legacy of 54 wins, 231 top-fives, 332 top-10’s and 18 poles. He was named one of the NASCAR’s 50 greatest drivers before passing away at the age of 86 in April of 2000. Often referred to as one of the founding fathers of NASCAR, he was the leader of the only fourgeneration family in sports. The year he retired was the year his son, Richard, won the Daytona 500 and his first of seven championships. While Lee was considered to be

one of the first stars of the sport, Richard went on to become “The King”. His record of 200 victories and mark of seven championships stand as a testament to one of the sport’s most competitive and successful drivers. Kyle Petty has helped carry on the family’s name with more than 800 career starts and eight victories. His most successful season came in 1992 driving for Felix Sabates, when he collected two victories and finished fifth in the standings. He returned to his family’s organization in 1997 and continues to drive and help run the business.

HOLLYWOOD ... It’s amazing, the things actors will do to play a role. In her book “Hollywood Trivia Factory,” Aubrey Malone tells us that Faye Dunaway lost 20 pounds to look gaunt for her role in “Bonnie and Clyde.” She did it by hauling sandbags around and eating as little as possible to survive. And believe me, those cheekbones stood out. ... Robert Duval got a job singing in a bar to prepare himself for his Oscar-winning role in “Tender Mercies.” ... For her role in “Sophie’s Choice,” Meryl Streep learned to speak both Polish and German fluently. ... To get into the mind of a deaf mute for her role in “Johnny Belinda,” Jane Wyman studied sign language and lip reading, and worked with the handicapped to familiarize herself with their daily routines. She also wore plastic earplugs on the set to block out all sound. Martin Sheen stayed drunk for two days for a scene in “Apocalypse Now,” and Dustin Hoffman stayed up all night to look tired for a scene in “Marathon Man,” which prompted co-star Sir Larry Olivier to ask, “Why don’t you try acting, my good man?” We aren’t told Hoffman’s answer. Brad Pitt actually had one of his front teeth chipped and shaved his head to look suitably menacing for “The Fight Club,” and since then Brad has shaved his head often, dieted to look gaunt and otherwise looked much like his handsome self. ... Jon Voight spent five weeks learning to play basketball in a wheelchair for his role in “Coming Home.” ... And Jack Lemmon really prepared himself for his role in “Days of Wine and Roses.” He attended AA meetings, went to hospitals to watch alcoholics drying out, and spent days going around in a straitjacket. ... For his role as Ghandi in the movie of that name, Ben Kingsley lost 17 pounds, went bald, took up yoga and even learned how to spin thread. ... And Warren Beatty actually learned Russian (and that ain’t easy) for his role in “Reds.” As you can see, acting isn’t all just smiling or crying into a camera. AND a few weird fashion foibles: Yul Brenner wore only black in the last years of his life. ... Joan Collins wore a dress to a press conference made of all the newspaper stories that were written about her that year. ... When Kirk Douglas was ready for his guests to go home, he would retire to his bedroom and return in his pajamas. ... Mae West wore 10-inch heels. ... John Wayne wore lifts in his shoes, and a corset. ... Lana Turner once owned 698 pairs of shoes. I was not told who counted. ... Believe it or not, it’s said that George Hamilton throws away socks after he has worn them once. This I find a bit difficult to believe. Actors will either gain or lose weight to play a role. Robert DeNiro put on 60 pounds to play Jake LaMotta in “Raging Bull”; Gary Oldman lost so much weight for a role in “Sid and Nancy” that he had to be hospitalized. Jennifer Jason Leigh went down to 86 pounds to play an anorexic in “The Best Little Girl in the World,” and Shirley MacLaine put on 20 pounds to play Madame Sousatska. If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying ‘End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH,’ the paint wouldn’t even have time to dry.” (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta Hyper Dogs, Blind Cat Highlight Fall Books This fall's pet books are robust and entertaining, and even wellknown authors from the other end of the bookshelf are chiming in. A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned a book, "Don't Dump the Dog" by Randy Grim, that offered advice on dealing with common but annoying behaviors from dogs. Frustrated owners may also want to check out "HighEnergy Dogs: A Practical Guide to Living With Energetic and Driven Canines," by Tracy Libby (TFH Publications). Dogs like Australian shepherds, Jack Russell terriers and Basenjis can be a real handful, especially for the inexperienced owner, and it's all too easy to become frustrated with a spirited puppy. This colorful guide discusses characteristics of several high-energy, intelligent breeds and walks owners through methods of understanding and training such dogs. "Homer's Odyssey," by Gwen Cooper (Delacorte Press), is an

account of life with the "blind wonder cat," as Cooper describes the kitten she adopted at a Miami veterinarian's office. Expectations aren't high for Homer, who lost his eyes at just three weeks of age, but the kitten grows into an independent daredevil. It's a charming story, and a nice weekend read. Finally, novelist Dean Koontz has taken his first step into nonfiction and pet writing with his memoir, "A Big Little Life" (Hyperion). Koontz recounts the joys of life with Trixie, a retired service dog with Canine Companions for Independence and the first dog he had ever owned. "A Big Little Life" is a big little diversion from his intense works of fiction, and a welcome new voice to pet memoirs. Pick up his and all this month's releases at your local bookstore or online. Send your tips, questions and comments to Paw's Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or e-mail them to [email protected]. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • Ice-cube trays are the best thing ever -- they are great for so many things. Here are two of my favorites: Use one to sort beads or hardware. Also, freeze juice in cubes, then use them either as ice cubes for water or for mini Popsicles. • Mitch W. in Saskatchewan, Canada, writes: “Copy and disperse historical photos, documents and records so that if

something happens to the originals, at least someone will have copies and that part of history will not be lost forever.” Good advice, Mitch! • Go Green Tip: Start a compost bin. It’s easy and requires not too much effort to maintain, once you get the hang of it. Besides, kitchen and yard waste represent 30 percent of trash. NOTICE
As you know, we run many reader ads for government auctions, job positions, earn money at home, cash loans, credit cards, etc. Most of these ads come through state and national ad networks. Most of them are selling directories or listings of where to APPLY FOR what is advertised. This information may be available at less cost elsewhere. While these ads are screened where possible, we have no way of verifying the authenticity of their claims or the value of their product. The buying decision must be yours. If you have problems with any of these advertisers, please let us know and we will attempt to get you a refund. Most of the companies we have checked will refund their fees to unsatisfied customers. Read the ads carefully. Some charge a fee, as noted in the ad, directly to your phone bill when you call them. Once again, we can’t verify claims for every ad. Please consider their offer and make a voluntary and reasonable buying decision. Moneysaver Advertising, Inc.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver • You probably don’t think much about the fees charged at ATMs, but maybe you should start. That $1 here, $2.50 there really adds up -to more than $4 billion every year in the U.S. alone. • Do you suffer from prosopagnosia? Unless you’ve suffered some kind of injury to your brain, probably not. Also known as face blindness, prosopagnosia is the inability to recognize familiar faces. • The Goliath frog of West Africa

can reach up to a foot in length and weigh more than 7 pounds. • Wimbledon, played in the United Kingdom and one of the four Grand Slam events, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world. Every year at the event about 42,000 balls are used. • If you’re a fan of the tiny, rubbery candy known as the Gummi Bear, here’s some good news for you: The world’s largest Gummi Bear is now on the market, available for about $30. The equivalent of 1,400 regular-size bears, the giant candy weighs 5 pounds.

As a publicity stunt, Fairbanks had posed atop a New York hotel in costume, with bow and arrow. He and several others shot arrows from the building, and accidentally injured a man when an arrow flew through an open window. • On Oct. 14, 1947, U.S. Air Force Captain Chuck Yeager becomes the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound. His X-1 aircraft was lifted to an altitude of 25,000 feet by a B-29 and then released through the bomb bay, rocketing to 40,000 feet and exceeding 662 mph. • On Oct. 15, 1964, while trying to set a new 1 mile landspeed record, Craig Breedlove inadvertently set another kind of record after he lost control of the Spirit of America jet-powered car on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. The vehicle began to skid, taking nearly 6 miles to decelerate from more than 400 mph -- the longest skid marks on record. • On Oct. 16, 1973, Henry Kissinger and North Vietnamese diplomat Le Duc Tho are awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating the Paris Peace Accords. Kissinger accepted, but Tho declined the award until such time as “peace is truly established.” • On Oct. 17, 1994, taxicab driver Jeremy Levine returned to London, from a round-trip journey to Cape Town, South Africa. Passengers Mark Aylett and Carlos Aresse paid 40,000 pounds, or approximately $65,000, for the 21,691-mile trip, setting a world record for the longest known taxicab ride. ***

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver • It was actor, senator and erstwhile presidential candidate Fred Thompson who made the following observation: “After two years in Washington, I often long for the realism and sincerity of Hollywood.”

• On Oct. 13, 1792, the cornerstone is laid for a presidential residence in the newly designated capital city of Washington. The executive mansion soon became known as the “White House” because its white-gray Virginia freestone contrasted strikingly with the red brick of nearby buildings. • On Oct. 12, 1915, British nurse Edith Cavell is executed by a German firing squad for helping Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during World War I. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • Here’s another tip from M.W. in Saskatchewan, Canada: “Moth balls repel bees and wasps, cats, mice, skunks, raccoons and deer.” Too true! *** • “My son loves to bring his little cars with him, but he has a habit of mixing them with other kids’ cars. We used a bright color of nail polish to make a mark on the underside of each of his cars. Now there’s no argument -- he knows which are his.” -- P.L. in Connecticut *** • Go Green Tip: Here’s a great green tip: Quit smoking! It’s the right thing to do for your heart and lungs; cigarette smoke is a major indoorair pollutant; and landfills and the side of the road will thank you. Over the course of a decade, a pack-a-day smoker puts 73,000 cigarette butts into ashtrays and out car windows.

Eldred, Pa. e.o.w.tfc NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson • To keep moisture in a cake that has been cut, secure a slice of bread to the cut sides with toothpicks. This will eliminate the need to slice off a bit of the cake to get rid of the dried-out portion. It works well for most types of cakes. *** • Pick up an old spice rack at a garage sale and use it to store art supplies. The ones that spin are really cool and can hold many different items. *** • “If you’re thinking about sewing a Halloween costume, start looking through the remnant section of your fabric store for good deals. This is especially true if you have little ones to sew for. You can find small but valuable pieces of good, fun fabrics at a great price cut.” -- W.E. in Missouri ***

SCAMMERS GET CREATIVE Scammers never go away. They just get more creative in their methods of getting you to part with your money. Here’s a sampling of current scams to watch out for: --Scareware: Scam software that gets into your computer and makes you believe your machine has a virus. You’ll be notified with an urgent popup screen that says you need to download certain anti-virus software immediately or your computer will be in danger. The real danger is that you’ll fall for it and download (and pay for) the suggested software to fix the nonexistent problem. --Foreign lotteries: If you get a call saying you’ve won a foreign lottery, hang up. One, you likely didn’t enter the lottery, and two, you surely didn’t give them your phone number. The scam comes in when you’re told that you need to pay fees in advance for various reasons. --Charity scams: Anytime there’s a disaster, the scammers will hit you up for donations to help the victims. Many people would genuinely like to help, but beware who you give your dollars to. The more emotional the request for money, the more likely it is to be a scam. Stick with the big names such as the Red Cross or The Salvation Army if you want to respond to a disaster. --Auctions: Foreclosed properties and seized cars have big scam potential. The ads make it sound like you can pick up a house for only a few thousand dollars or a vehicle for a few hundred. The scam comes when you’re asked to buy a guide to all the foreclosed properties and seized vehicles in your area. The guides aren’t cheap. If you give them your credit-card number, you’ve given them free license to charge more things to your card. To explore genuine foreclosed properties, start with the government’s Housing and Urban Development Web site at www.hud.gov. --Census: The 2010 Census has plenty of opportunities for scams, and some have already surfaced. At this point, census takers are verifying addresses only. If someone appears at your door saying they’re from the Census and asking for information that includes your Social Security number or bank information, it’s a scam. Also beware of e-mail supposedly from the Census: You will not be contacted that way. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected]. (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

celebration as a guide. A simple affair on the beach in the summer might not call for the same type of cake as a formal evening affair in the winter. The actual design of the cake is up for grabs. Some couples may opt for the traditional three layers, while others may go for fewer or additional layers. Tiers can be of the same or different heights with the same or alternating designs. Some couples may request the design of their wedding cake incorporate the traditional flowers, either made of silk or frosting, while others may choose dots or scrollwork. Although once popular, basket weaves and swags appear to be on their way out, as do plastic columns and foil boards. Common cake flavors include carrot, chocolate, lemon, spice and vanilla, with many couples requesting each layer of their cake to be a different flavor.
