Dean Rossi 8-24-10 Period 2 The Brighter Side of Darker Days What is the most depressing part of life? For most people, it is the end of their long life journey: death. There is no guarantee of any sort of afterlife which is why no one would give up their precious time on Earth. Seeing a precious family member go is also incredibly painful. While looking at an excerpt of a letter by George Bernard Shaw, he reveals the joy he experiences in his mother s cremation, but why happiness? Is he that sick and demented that he takes joy out of another s, especially his mother s, life? Well, he seems to take the sorrows of death into a different perspective. Shaw first observes the cremation room, being a calm, sanitary place as opposed to beliefs of the room looking more like a medieval torture facility. He watches his Mom turn into, streaming ribbons of garnet coloured lovely flame, as her cremation begins. The fire jumps around, dancing over the coffin, and his mom begins to turn to ashes. Shaw only feels disappointment when he is told it will be another hour and a half before the process ends. When he comes back, he seems to see two cooks that have spilled ashes and bones all over the kitchen floor. One would expect furiousness that workers have spilled his mother s remains, but he instead finds his mom next to him asking, Which of the two heaps do you suppose is me? He manages to find humor in a horrible happening. What could his outlook on life really be? Shaw does not hate his mother, he just knows that she lived a fulfilling life. People today are more concerned to living as long as possible that they do not get a full experience journey. There is an old saying: The value of life is not measured in how many breaths one takes, but in how many times their breath is taken away . Shaw is not psychotic, but he just knows that his mother s life was worth anything she had gone through. The sadness of death will never see a lovelier tale close. The happiest moments with the most depressing of tragedies come together for the full experience. In the end, Shaw

places his mother s ashes in a flower pot as fertilizer, hoping that in some way, his mom can continue to live. She dies, but the love surrounding her displays itself to the fullest. This could give a whole new meaning to the phrase, Rest in Peace .
