Broken Toys
As soon as the clock stroke 9, the distinct though unfamiliar voice of Brandy's mother can be
heard.
"Brandy, it's nine o'clock. Time to go to sleep!"
Footsteps sounded through the room, no sooner followed by the swing of a creaking door and
a loud slam. When silence was all that penetrated through the night, I began to stretch my
arm and legs. I pushed off the cover of the jewelled encrusted box, and with all my might,
grasped onto the edge of the box and heaved my dishevelled body up and hopped out of the
box.
Deprived of fresh playground air for many years, I took a deep breath. As my eyes grew
accustomed to the darkness, I glanced around at my surrounding; everything has changed.
The collection of plush Bears, once upon the shelves to right, were gone. The comfortable sofa
that sat in the far corner was replaced by a rocking pony. The walls were now covered with
shelves filled with children's books and dolls. I peered further and recognised something; it
was the Fairy Mat, the only Brandy would sit on and play with her fluffy toys. At the thought of
that, I smiled to myself. I seemed an eternity away that I saw Brandy, and only now I felt that I
really missed her. As I approached the mat, a sudden beam of bright light pinned me to the
spot.
I lifted my arms to block the blinding light. A voice boomed, as sudden as the light, from
behind the shadows.
"What are you doing here, Fat Pete!?!"
I recognised the voice; it was the voice of the Talking-Carebear Caroline, the most popular toy
before I was thrown into the broken-toy box in the corner. Knowing my position, I dare not
speak with too loud.
"No-nothing. Just wan-wandering" I replied with a hint of nervousness.
With a loud click, the beam of light disappeared, revealing a crowd of toys. Many were new
toys that I never met, but I instantly recognised Rocking Horse Rebecca, Babooshka Doll
Brenda and Mermaid Maggie in the back, looking slightly abashed. The new toys were newly
polished dolls with slim body and long blonde hair.
"Broken toys like you don't wander here, get back to the box where you belong", exclaimed
Caroline.
"But... but, I belong here. This was my home." I protested.
The crowd erupted into fits of laughter, with some rolling on the carpet.
"You must kidding yourself!" screamed a doll in the back row, "You're a dirty, black bear with a
broken arm. No one wants to play with you
