write the message for BSW newsletter. Since my stay at IITD for more than three decades as a faculty and even earlier as student, I saw a tremendous change in the perception and thinking of the students. The students are well informed and generally clear about their goals with lots of exposure available to them. For any student, it is a dream comes true if he/she gets admission in IIT. But surprisingly, it is observed that, some of the students are confused about their goals & missions and lose track for which they are here. My mission is to have holistic development of the student community so that they enjoy their stay and achieve whatever they

wish at IITD by taking care of their problems through welfare schemes with the cooperation of one and all. The Board for Student Welfare (BSW) at IIT Delhi has many activities and programmes already in place which I would like to strengthen with few new initiatives. Some of them are financial support, men1

torship programme, summer/winter jobs for needy students, counselling service, students & teacher interaction scheme etc. I strongly feel that we can empower our students with values through programmes which will help them to face the challenges and hardship in their pursuit of learning. is unique & important and has a great power, so our mission is to make the student feel that way. Further, Mentorship programme will be made more effective so that new students can comfortably settle down and feel at home in the Institute. We are looking at ways for assisting needy students in mitigating their difficulties. With varied academic and social background of the students, we will like to put in place some innovative programmes which can help these students to be at par with privileged ones. For the students who need help to manage their time and other personal issues, we are making counselling cell more effective and useful. We are also working towards streamlining various other BSW activities to make these free from politicking and more transparent. The BSW in this semester undertook a great many tasks. Speranza the annual festival of BSW has risen to even greater heights and many new events were incorporated into it. Apart from that the team did a great job during the registration of the new students taking care of each and every need of theirs’. Also many trips and workshops conducted by the team were highly appraised by all Finally, I would like to say that it is the journey that matters more than the destination. I wish all of you to enjoy jourbsw.iitd.ernet.in

ney of life and have fruitful tenure at IITD. Wishing you a good luck for your future endeavours.

The wifi system installed in SAC is a commendable work by BSW.It helped immensely in the making of Rendezvous which demanded involvement and effort of students round the clock. Since most of the management work and social media publicity was done over internet, a 24x7 internet connection was a prerequisite for the event. Thank You BSW for their untiring efforts.

Board for Students Welfare has always been an essential part of the functioning of the Student Mentorship Program. The representatives have enthusiastically come forward in handling the logistics in several initiatives of the program, be it organizing English language help sessions, arranging transportation for the freshmen, organizing the fresher orientation or any of the general activities of the program. Organizing mentor interviews of 300 candidates won’t have been possible but for the tremendous support received from the BSW. Besides this, BSW has always been a helping hand in terms of the ideas and general feedback that we keep getting from the entire BSW team. In general, the logistic support provided by the board representatives has been one of the most important contributions to the activities of the mentorship program this year.

The Board for Student Welfare is a pioneer in student welfare and benefit in IITD. It’s most distinguishing character lies in the very nature of the board, a board of the students, for the students, by the students. As a board, we have always strived to ensure the holistic development of the students. The board works tirelessly through the year to create well rounded individuals who are well equipped to face societal challenges. Speranza is the Annual Welfare Festival of the BSW which was started in the year 2007 as a part of the vision to take the work done by the board one step forward and reach out to more people. In the past four years we have seen events like Rendezvous with Alumni, Model United Nations, Anti Addiction Talks, Education Orientation and each year the board has worked tirelessly, to make Speranza beneficial for the holistic development of the students. That is where the spirit of Speranza lies, a festival for youth welfare. Spread across 3 days various events and workshops are held, each of which has the potential to make a significant impact on an individual. These events are carefully conceptualized well in advance to interest the students and have a great turn

out. This is what has been a common trend, certain events like Rendezvous with Alumni always see a lot of participation from the students and therefore this is an event which has been a permanent fixture in Speranza.

Speranza kicks off the festival culture in IITD as it is usually the first festival to be held. Speranza functions purely as the festival for the welfare of the students on a deeper level. Speranza aims to educate and create awareness amongst the students through its events, there lies a more profound meaning in it which is not entertainment but genuine welfare. Speranza being under the BSW is an extension of the desire of the board to do good work for the well-being of students in IITD, as it is the first festival to be held in the year and serves as a great welcome note for the freshers. When students first join IIT it is an entirely new world that 3

they are thrust into and are not fully aware of the plethora of activities and opportunities which present themselves to them. Through Speranza we also aim to inform them of the best possible way to make full use of their four coming years. In order to provide them with a kick start to productive years ahead we host certain events like RWA, where students are given an informal setting to interact with their Alumni, Education Orientation to inform students about their choices after graduation, Anti Addiction Talks, to warn them in advance that with the freedom that comes along with hostel life, they are also responsible for ensuring they do not stray on a wayward path. The literal translation of Speranza is a ray of hope, which is what we aim to ignite in each student, the hope to be good and do good throughout their stay in IIT. The purpose of Speranza is not to provide a source of recreation only, but to combine leisure and learning in such a way that students gain maximum benefit out of it.
