This ramp must be collapsable. The purpose Physical design of the system. / Physical design to make it modular. is to allow vehicles to drive onto and off the train. This must be strong enough for a backactor and a drilling rig. Design and manufacture a new car for racing Parts must be designed and manufactured The 1.5 stage turbine test rig at the CSIR utilises a hydraulic dynamometer to control the turbine speed. This pack is clearly over designed and often runs out of control authority over th turbine as environmental the t bi th it i t l temperature changes. Small gas turbines used in radio controlled models typically operate at shaft speeds of 120000 RPM but can extend to 200 000 RPM. Combustion at such a small scale is extremely tricky and the combustor length is limited by the shaft length between compressor and turbine, which is in turn limited by the shaft dynamics. As part of this project the student/s are required to diagnose the system and propose and implement the most viable solution. The student will be required to spend time at the CSIR in order to diagnose th problem and implement solutions the t di bl di l t l ti on-site. The student is required to analyse the dynamics of an existing shaft design and provide a method (spreadsheet or better) for future analyses. In addition a proposal for alternative engine and shaft layouts should be proposed and analysed including a scenario whereby a high speed generator maybe added to the shaft.

Small Gas Turbine Generator/Starte

Small gas turbine engines currently only This project requires the student/s to design and if generate thrust, but if they are to be used for possible test on a rudimentary test rig a high larger or military applications then electrical speed generator capable of generating 2 kW of power generation would enable the UAV electrical power from a shaft rotating at 120000 to carry fewer batteries. RPM. The generator must also be capable of acting as a starter.

Automated Pitch Control for an Aerodynamic Calibrator

The 5-hole probe calibrator stand at the CSIR The student is required to design and implement a is currently manually operated in pitch but cost effective control system for the pitch axis of automated in yaw, making the completion of the calibrator utilising existing control software a full calibration matrix of 13 pitch settings and hardware wherever possible. The system tedious. currently makes use of a Siemens S2700 PLC and WinCC Flexible architecture. The student would be required to propose a new casing design to incorporate shrouds and analyse the successful candidate design for adequate strength. In addition the design of a shroud system for the turbine must be designed to include interlocking with neighbouring blades and adequate leakage sealing. The final shroud design will be rapidly prototyped for test and evaluation of the fit and locking mechanisms.

Casing and Shroud design for Shrouded turbine The 1.5 stage turbine test rig currently is only testing in the 1.5 stage turbine rig at the CSIR: capable of testing free tip turbines. The GS/TA addition of the capability to incorporate shrouded turbines would be of great value but is complicated by the fact that the rig requires the casing to rotate in order to traverse flowfield and take measurements.

A solar heat pump will waste minimal energy while heating or cooling a home. It is a great alternative to air conditioning and furnaces for most homes. Instead of using a lot of power to generate heat, this type of system simply relocates it. During the summer, heat is moved out of an area to cool it, and a heat transfer in the opposite direction is performed during winter to warm an area up. There are two basic types of solar dryer appropriate for use with grain: natural convection dryers where the air flow is induced by thermal gradients; and forced convection dryers wherein air is forced through a solar collector and the grain bed by a fan The purpose of this project is to design, construct and evaluate a solar-powered pumping system for a local farmer wanting to pump water from a drilled well up to a watering trough for cattle in a distant field. Design calculations, prototype building, testing and evaluation. Cattle drinking trough is located 23 m higher than a drilled well. Sizing of Pump controller, Solar module sizing and pump selection.
